    This was performed in the middle of a heavy metal concert.... note the fans.... dead silence during the song then WHAM... the crowd explodes.... this is why metal fans are the best in the world... if the song speaks to them it doesn't matter what genre it is.

    According to Tuomas they would have asked Floor when they got Anette but she was in a band then. After Forever opened up for Nightwish on one of their tours. So they new about each other for years. Tuomas said after Tarja he always wanted Floor.
    If you want to see more of Floor with Simone from Epica do Epica - Sancta Terra. You will be blown away.

    Thanks for this reaction to an over 700 years old song performed by two Dutch goddesses of symphonic metal. Floor & Simone are childhood friends & Floor has even given singing lessons to Simone in her capacity of a vocal coach / singing instructor. For more amazing Dutch female metal vocalists, you should check this out: Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra - Somewhere (Black Symphony HD 1080p) th-cam.com/video/ScjEJRIZGvg/w-d-xo.html with Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) and Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering, Devin Townsend, Ayreon, The Gentle Storm, VUUR etc.). It was Anneke with her first band "The Gathering" that inspired Floor Jansen to start singing as a teenager & join her first band "After Forever" at age 16.
    P.S. I just learned that when God first created music, he thought it was good. Then came Nightwish, and God said: "This is so much better". Then Nightwish got Floor Jansen on vocals, and God dropped the microphone as s/he had just heard perfection. Yes, Floor is a little over 6 feet tall.

    She also sang the famous aria Oh mio babbino Caro in a dutch tv show, it is on TH-cam! Also how crazy to sing this in the middle of a metal show 😉 Floor is from the Netherlands, we have a universaty here its called Rock Academy and Floor has done this education, also she is a professional vocal coach I believe. She was first in the band After Forever and then in Revamp and now nightwish. So check out some of those songs for more Floor. Nightwish's first Singer, Tarja Turunen was pure opera. Floor can emulate her very well when she wants to, but threre was something unique about the sound they had with Tarja. This is coming from another recent fan who discovered them with Floor.

  • @matthewarms3786
    @matthewarms3786 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The suggestion of Floor doing Puccini's O Mio Bambino Caro is a great example of her going full classical. There are a few blemishes from a pure technical standpoint (little hesitations and one obvious flat note) but I love the emotion in her interpretetion.
    As for Simone and Epica, a few years before this show they did a live album called The Classical Conspiracy (sadly not professionally filmed, though there are some crowd recorded excerpts up on TH-cam) where she does a great rendition of Ombra Mai Fu by Handel in the middle of the show.
    And yes, Floor is 6'1", being a 5'7" man and meeting her a few times (first time all the way back in 2007 on After Forever's last tour) and I feel tiny standing next to her.

    STABAT MATER?! an ancient religious prayer/chant, that Classical Composers began composing to music (as far back as the 1400's) as well as many other prayers/chants and even full masses (by the likes of Brahms, Haydn, etc...). what they are singing/playing in this video is the Composition of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (early 1700's), as his version of this piece seems to be the most famous one among Composers when regarding the 'Stabat Mater'. (Stabat Mater is Latin for 'The Standing Mother' and is a prayer about Mary at the foot of the Cross) after all of the videos i have just binge watched of Epica, it seems that they really seem to combine the Spiritual (in many different forms) with this really *heavy music* which you would not think would blend so well, but it does so *gorgeously* ... (one of the other songs you reviewed 'Sancta Terra' is Latin for 'Sacred Ground'). it is like 'Nightwish' hits you right in the Heart, and Epica hits you right in the Spirit or something... no wonder they are considered sister 'bands'! thank you again for introducing me to this band with *your* reactions! EDIT: i should have mentioned that the 'Dolorosa' at the end is usually but not always added to the title. the Latin for Dolorosa is basically 'pain/lamentation', so it is more like 'the lamentation of Mary (Mater) standing (Stabat) at the foot of the Cross.

      @@TheBandSShow you are SO welcome! trust me i am full of this kind of info... hahahaha. not a musician, but took a lot of music courses. and i love all music, i span genres all the way from Classical to Jazz to Grunge to Indie Bands to Heavy Metal to Funk to Soul to Opera to Gospel to ancient chants... and on. and Stan, i noticed you said "This is my shit right here" haha... if you wish, even just on your own, if you would like more like this (prayers set to Composition) i would suggest "Agnus Dei" (Lamb of God) by Composed by Samuel Barber, Verdi's "Dies Irae" (Day of Wrath), Fauré's "Libera Me" (Deliver me), and a piece by Tchaikovsky called "Hymn of The Cherubim"... for starts. *Smile*
      it was *your* videos that also had me binge watching Dimash! and thank you SO much for that! not sure if you know this bit of info, but the older bald gentleman you always see playing piano with/for Dimash is actually Igor Krutoy, a famous but mostly retired Classical Composer in Russia... but when he heard Dimash sing... be began writing music *just* for his voice, and he said something like it being a 'dream come true' because there was music in his head that he 'couldn't' really compose because no one could sing music that he heard in his head (until Dimash!), so he actually came fully out of retirement just for Dimash... if you watch the performances, watch how the piano player (Krutoy) watches Dimash singing... he is actually hearing the music he always wanted to compose being brought to such amazing life and you can see it on his face! 'Love is Like a Dream', 'Ogni Pietra', 'Passione', and 'The love of Tired Swans' are just a few of the songs that he wrote for Dimash.
      i LOVE your reaction channel, i guess you could say it is my favorite... you two are truly genuine in what you feel, your reactions, your appreciation for the talent and the music, and i love the friendship that is so obvious between you! OH, and here is a tip... please react to some older live 'Iron Maiden' songs... you will have a whole new bunch of massive fans flooding your channel, *while* you get to hear one of the greatest Heavy Metal Bands ever to exist. i would say the early versions of the songs "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "The Trooper", "Fear of the Dark", and "Aces High" would be great ones to start with.. Bless!

    Floor Jansen was the vocalist for After Forever, a progressive metal band.
    Besides that, she's also a vocal coach.
    She studied classical and operatic singing for a relative short period of time.
    Mark Jansen (not related), her former band mate, left After Forever and formed a new band called Sahara Dust.
    Unfortunately (or rather fortunately) there was no click between the band members and their first female vocalist Helena Michaelsen, the current vocalist of Imperia.
    Mark Jansen already knew Simone Simons from the After Forever chat site and asked her to become the band's new vocalist.
    The band was later renamed 'Epica' after an album from the band Kamelot, with whom they toured.
    Floor was also a vocal coach for Simone, with whom she's best friends.
    When After Forever was disbanded Floor founded the band ReVamp.
    Occasionally she still sings in ReVamp.

  • @marciusnhasty
    @marciusnhasty 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I must add that Epica is also symphonic metal bend, it's just that they did an opera here so that Epica's drummer and guitarists (one of which does growl and harsh vocals) take a break. Epica - Sancta Terra feat. Floor Jansen from the same show has quite heavy guitar riffs on top of that orchestra. Epica doesn't really do keyboards and that makes them quite different from Nightwish. You could also listen to Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera, End of an Era 2005. It's with Tarja, original Nigtwish vocal with Marco singing the Phantom's parts and is mostly a metal cover of the original "Phantom of the Opera". But Tarja was different from Floor, she was singing all Nightwish songs almost exclusively with operatic style. Less range, but she is the reason that there are so much operatic elements in Nightwish songs. 5 out of 8 of their studio albums Tuomas composed while she was the lead vocal.

    Both ladies have indeed a classical background education and are close friends. Nightwish was very aware of her vocal skills because Floor had toured with them as member of "After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions.😀

    I was going to recommend this but left a link to Floor doing Puccini because this song with Simone only showcased Floors lower register. If you want a special treat check out Sancta Terra with Simone and Floor in this same concert. It’s a little more metal but still features the opera style singing. Floor is more of a belter who can sing opera. Nightwish’s first vocalist Tarja (pronounce Tar-re-ya) is more of a pure opera singer.

    Hey guys great reaction! So yea... Floor was well known before she was in Nightwish. She was in a band called After Forever many years ago (before EPICA became a band).... and the founder/co-founder was Guitarist Mark Jansen, who then founded EPICA after he split up from After Forever. They're obviously on good terms lol So they know each other from way back, and Floor's singing style is something they already knew about. Now, you guys mentioned if Nightwish fans would also enjoy this (and as one myself) I can tell you that we do. Nightwish basically spear-headed this genre of music (classical and Metal) because their original vocalist is actually a classically trained lyric Soprano. Her name is Tarja Turunen, you can def react to NIGHTWISH - THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA LIVE so you can get a sense of that. Floor, Simone and many other female artists have mentioned that they were heavily inspired by Tarja and Nightwish as a band and its mostly why they've picked up on having a classical-oriented singing style. After Nightwish parted ways with their original vocalist (because of differences between the founder, Tuomas - Keyboards, and the lead singer, Tarja) they had a second vocalist (which had more pop vocals) for a few years, and in 2012, Floor joined the band as their current vocalist (who's the best of both worlds because she can do both). Soooo... lol Floor knows EPICA from way back, as did Nightwish, and now floors in nightwish and she does duets with epica, small symphonic metal world lol (but yea go check out more Nightwish with Tarja)

    Floor did study opera singing when she was younger. She is by no means a professional opera singer, but she has the capability of using that in her technical repertoire.
    If you want true opera singers (that have masters and all that), Dianne Van Giersbergen and Lori Lewis are two great examples in the symphonic metal genres (I'm sure there are more, but those are the two that come to my mind).

    Mark Jansen and Floor Jansen (no relation) were in After Forever together. Mark J. left the band and formed Epica. If you listen to some of the Mark J. era After Forever stuff, you will hear echos of Epica.

    This music was composed in 1734 by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi taken from a prayer of 1300, it is incredible that it was played in front of an audience of jubilant metalheads
    Fantastico, Bellissimo i love it.......Interessante;-)

      Pergolesi wrote it as he was dying, at the age of 26.

    Floor was the original singer for Epica, however they have chosen Simone for the lead singer eventually (as her and Epica founder were dating at that time). Floor sang in After Forever and then had her own band formed - ReVamp. If that is still not enough of Floor for you, now you have quite a lot to catch up with :D

    Yep, Nightwish already knew Floor from her band After Forever. In this band she used more her operatic voice. So when she became their singer, I thought she would sing opera. But she did not and rather sang rock. I love it both.

      This isn't really an introduction to Epica though, is it. Apart from Simone performing this song, only the orchestra in the back plays along and it's a classical song not by Epica.

      FloppyHares I’m fully aware. I’m just saying “welcome to Epica” as in starting the Epica journey as it were.

    Epica was formed by Mark Jansen (no relation to Floor), who was in Floor's old band After Forever. Simone was Mark's girlfriend at the time so her and Floor have known each other for a long time. I've heard that Floor decided she wanted to sing after hearing Anneke van giersbergen. Simone on the other hand started singing pop music in high school but after hearing Nightwish's original singer Tarja she switched to classical singing lessons.

      Although Anneke was the one who steered to symphonic metal it her small role is a school musical that made her decide to become a vocalist. :-)

    Take a listen to Floor's second band Revamp. Only put out 2 albums before she feel into burnout. I think it sets between Epica and Nightwish in style, leaning more to Epica. Floor was the songwriter and, I believe, the principal composer. This will keep you guys busy for awhile.

    Its about Maria standing by and mourning her dead son Jesus in latin. The text is inspired on a 13th or 14th century poem 👀🐱‍👤😎 It's a Classical Clasic mostley song in Opera venues and Churches 😁👌 If you want the metal infused back in than you are good with "SANCTA TERRA" by "EPICA" featuring Floor Jansen, live at the "Retrospect Show"💖🌹

    I've seen Floor live for the first time some 15 years ago with Star One. She was in After Forever at the time, which I discovered later. Star One is a a project by Arjen Lucassen which I'm a fon of for about 20 years. I strongly recommend it.You will like it. Epic progness... Everybody dies th-cam.com/video/9AAXtUdM7xE/w-d-xo.html or The Day that the World Breaks down th-cam.com/video/oFuMKdrzPqU/w-d-xo.html (very epic and proggy) Then there is ReVamp, Florr's band before Nightwish, very much more metal. I recommend Disdain th-cam.com/video/tIqzPXzhEuw/w-d-xo.html, where you can see Floors way more heavy side.

    Loved the song and your reaction to it. Sancta Terra with the two of them is great also...heavier🤘 Did you guys allready react to" Vilja Lied" by Floor from a dutch tv show she was in. I think they perform songs that are meaningfull to the other singers/guests on the show.

  • @RCullis47

    The Floor/Epica connection (besides Floor and the band, Epica being Dutch) is that Floor and Epica guitarist, Mark Jansen (no relation) were both in the band, After Forever. When they split, Floor went on to start ReVamp and Mark went on to start Epica.
    Depending on who you ask, Floor is either 6' or 6'1".

    • @Catgirl6Poezebeest

      Roger Cullis not entirely true. Mark was kicked out of AF in 2002 after which he started Epica. AF (unfortunately) split in 2009 and ReVamp was started in 2010.

    • @RCullis47
      @RCullis47 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Catgirl6Poezebeest Perhaps I should have said Mark left the band instead of "split", a colloquialism for "leave" (by whichever means). Perhaps I'm showing my age. As far as I can tell, ReVamp was Floor's next committed project.
      I think we can agree that After Forever, Epica, ReVamp and Nightwish are all awesome bands.
