The hymn is from the 12th century. The music is from the early 18th, by Giovanni Pergolesi, who wrote it on his deathbed, at the age of 26.

Epica is a metal band and heavier than Nightwish, but this was their 10th anniversary concert where they invited an orchestra and choir. In this song, the band is taking a break.
This is 13th century lyrics sung to 18th century Baroque music by Pergolesi and sung by two metal queens at a metal concert. The song is about Mary crying for her son at the cross of Christ in Latin of course. Pergolesi was dying from TB when he wrote this and had only a short time left to live.
One noteworthy point: Floor the soprano is singing the alto role.
"Sancta Terra" from this same concert, also with Floor. And then to get the full Epica effect, "Consign to Oblivion" at the Zenith in Paris.

Hi for me, two of the best Symphonic metal lead singer's there is I absolutely love Classical and any type of metal music, to have bands like Epica and Nightwish, is the nearest I will ever get to heaven and angels with Floor and Simone singing. As you may now know. This is a superb cover of Giovanini Battista Pergolesi's sacred music composition, Stabat Mata Dolorosa (The Sorrowful Mother was Standing) is the 1st movement of a 12 movement composition and one of the most popular pieces. So with Mary and Jesus being the main character's it is mostly performed at Easter. Pergolesi was dying of Tuberculosis, it was said that he died within 24 hours of completing his work. For me I can feel the sadness and pain he felt, he so skillfully transmitted into the music.
I had to get Pergolesi's music. It goes to show, how good Floor and Simone with Epica's version is I just always make up my mind on which one do I play. Great video reaction.

No, this is not their normal style. They are a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in 2002 by guitarist, and harsh vocalist ,Mark Jansen after parting ways with his former band, After Forever, which he co-founded. AF was also the first band that Floor joined at age 16.
Lead singer is Simone Simons. She switched to the symphonic metal style in training, from pop, after hearing Tarja with Nightwish.
Coen Janssen on keyboards, Guitarist Isaac Delahaye, bassist Rob van der Loo, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek round out the current lineup.
This performance was in the middle of a metal concert. How to quiet thousands of metalheads and still have them love it. The Retrospect 10th anniversary 3 hour show in 2013. Simone was 3 months pregnant here.
As with Nightwish, they are great live. Try The Skeleton Key and Kingdom of Heaven part 3 from the Omega Alive 2021 virtual show, Beyond the Matrix and Consign to Oblivion live at the Zenith in Paris (2017), or the other song at this show with Floor, Sancta Terra.

This song is fabulous(!), but is also shows only one (classical) side of Epica. For this one-of "Retrospect" concert (to celebrate their 10-years anyversary) they hired a full Symphony orchestra plus a full classical choir. If you want a good introduction to the enormous catalogue of great - and heavy! - songs by Epica a good starting point would be "Consign to Oblivion" (live at the Zenith in Paris), also "Unleashed" from the same retrospect concert as this one, "Sancta Terra" (also with Floor as guest) also from the Retrospect, or "Kingdom of Heaven, Part 3" from Omega Alive, and from there on your homefree to explore the enorms rabbithole you just found. Enjoy!

Epica sounds to me like a heavy metal band trying to combine its death metal legacy with orchestral instruments, choirs and Simone's vocals - and it doesn't always sound like they've succeeded with it :)
Also, when will people finally realize that death growls and fry screams do not belong in serious metal music that has grown beyond the underground cvlt and the "f. you" attitude of the 80's? They're only appropriate in the extreme subgenres of metal that often don't even have any lyrics (maybe for the better :), but even there the progress has reached the point at which the human throat just doesn't sound brutal enough and people are forced to look for alternative solutions: th-cam.com/video/aHHIqaNVS3A/w-d-xo.html

    Well, few things:
Along with Nightwish, they are in the symphonic metal category. Lead singer is Simone Simons, and male vocalist is guitarist Mark Jansen. Mark and Floor are not related ,but were in After Forever together (Floor's first band she joined at 16).
WHEN Epica hit hard, they are heavier than Nightwish. But they also have some really beautiful, soft and tender ballads. And they often ”cover themselves” in completely different styles (jazz, Irish folk, klezmer…).
    Epica fan's are Epicans .
Their song "Sancta Terra" also features Floor in the same concert !!!!
Plus....It's still amazes me when I watch this concert , that all that screaming metal crowd goes completely silent , in the moment when these two lovely angels start to singing .....

Nice reaction! From the 10th anniversary Retrospect concert for Epica with a live orchestra and choir. It was a 3.5 hour concert and Epica took a few breaks and allowed the orchestra and Simone to stretch their musical legs. They even do some soundtrack music from Star Wars. This song is not really an Epica song but Simone and Floor returning to their classical training and performing a well known piece of classical music by Pergolesi. Epica is a symphonic metal band much like Nightwish but darker and heavier. I would recommend Unleashed from this same concert as a good introduction to an Epica song. Sancta Terra with Floor again is also a common introduction to Epica for many people. Epica also has some truly beautiful ballads like Once Upon a Nightmare, Rivers, and Time and Tides as well as some beautiful acoustic version of their songs like Omegacoustic and Abyss O'Time.

The very next track Twin Flames which is also soft but it got back to slightly heavier with Serenade of Self-Destruction and is also pretty good, The whole show was good! They are heavier symphonic compared to Nightwish. The also did the Imperial March from Starwars a bit later on. th-cam.com/video/iw7YUSBQWL4/w-d-xo.html
I love the fact that its at a metal concert and the fans love everything. You certainly wouldnt expect some classical at a metal concert but saying that matal and classical are similar. Personally I love it. This is the link for the complate show th-cam.com/video/hEi6ANdCcxI/w-d-xo.html Glad you enjoyed this, Have a good one

Mark Jansen and Sander created a band and invited Floor Jansen to sing.
Sander Floor started dating and writing songs together. The two decided to expel Mark Jansen who had formed the band Epica.
Nightwish is a crossover of power metal, folk and orchestral arrangements. Excellent for anyone who wants to start listening to metal. The Epica is heavier. It's death metal with orchestral arrangements.

@@geuseliohulk8661 for me Epica is the best symphonic metal band and most Epicans will agree with that. It would be strange to say about ur own band thst u are the best, so if Mark Jansen think that Therion is the best symphonic band than it's a fan feeling of him and where he likes to listen to. I never heared a band member say that his band is the best. So for me EPICA is by far the best symphonic metal band no other in this subgenre comes even close to them even in other subgenres, only Eluveitie is for me equal. Both bands are my absolute favourite bands!

I know you don't read or react to reactions, but I just need to tell you :)
This is written by an Italian composer Pergolesi, who was 27 years old and dying. He knew he had some weeks left and wrote this beautiful music piece that is written in 1300 AC. It is about the pain and strength Maria (Mary) had to endure while her son hang on the cross. For katholics, Maria Mary) is after God and his son Jesus the most important person. What she endured at very young age, protecting her child against the Romans (Nero) and always close to him till the end.
Simone from Epica and Floor are best friends. They studied classical singin together and were roommates. Floor had her own band at 16, After Forever. Epica has several bandmembers from After forever.
I love Simone her voice, but it is more fragile and her range is less wide than Floor's. That's why Floor took the ALT part here, she is a higher soprano than Simone, but lower registers she can also sing easily. That is what I love about Floor. I hear people saying Epica is harder than Nightwish, I dare to challange them with some very trash-progressive metal songs from Nightwish...but you can't compare the bands. I feel that Nightwish dares to experiment more with all kinds of genres and not standard intruments (Like Troy with his Irish bagipe, the old flute, old snare instruments)
But I love Epica also dearly and most important...these ladies love eachother dearly. They grew up together in classical music.
Fun fact....try singing this during a pop or rap concert. This shows that Metalheads, like myself, apreciate classical music a lot and many guitarists and singers are classical trained.

A few people have mentioned how good of friends these two are in real life. Closer than sisters, some have said.
The story behind the song is haunting and and a little heartbreaking. Though it must have been such a labor of love to create something so beautiful in a time such as that.
I have stopped being surprised by the diversity and open minds and hearts of “metal fans”. The generosity of dodo toy that I’ve seen in this fandom has seldom been matched by others out there. You are a peculiar and lovely bunch 🥰
P.S. I know that sometimes it can seem as though I don’t listen or that I’m unreachable. There are, in fairness, so many of you and I am definitely overwhelmed. But I always do my very best to listen and read; even if I can’t always respond. You are important. It’s important for me that you know that.

This song is about Mother Marys pain, when her son Jesus was cruzified. The theme is pretty old, so there are different versions to that. I think this one is from the 17th century, but i may be wrong about it.
The time, when metalfans would be disturbed, when wittnessing a classical piece in the middle of an metal concert, are gone for a long time. I don't miss them. It's an honour for the genre, that musicians, who were obviously able to do the most advanced musicstyles, decids to make metal. I like that.
Btw., i think, this video would have a lot more then 50 clicks. There are a lot of reactors doing this, and most of them have loads of clicks... XD
Edit: This version is written by composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in 1736. The origins of the lyrics are not completely clear, but it seems, they are from the 13th or 14th century.

    • @roykliffen9674

The author of the lyrics may be either the Franciscan friar Jacopone da Todi or Pope Innocent III in the 13th century. I tend to think it was the friar; it wouldn't be the first time in history that someone higher up the chain would take - or be given credit - for a magnificent piece of work by a lowly underling.
Pergolesi set it to music just a few weeks before he would die of tuberculosis in march 1736.

But you see in yourself that the stereotypical thinking and prejudices are to think that not both go together in one concert.

As several commenters have said, definitely Sancta Terra next. On the whole Epica is a bit too heavy on the growls for me, so you'll have to rely on others for suggestions as to their more "standard" mode (like NW they love variety). My own go-to is another atypical one, Feint, which is also beautiful (and after a long time there's now a decent version on YT).

Epica is the 2nd unbelievable Symphonic Metal Band next to Nightwish. And has a lot of influences of Death and Black Metal. Like NW their diversity is huge. As you see 😂. For me Epica and Nightwish are my Yin and Yan of Metal music. There is a 2nd duet with Floor called "Sancta Terra". But if you wanna discover them check out "Beyond the Matrix" Paris live. And from this you can go to the left to incredible ballads or accoustic songs like "Run for a Fall" official live, or to the right to heavy stuff like "Consign to Oblivion" Paris live. 😉

You'll hear the incredible crystal clear beautiful voice of Simone Simons.
Btw this not an Epica song, it's an old hymn that Epica ( basically Simone the soprano part, another vocalist from choir the alto part and an orchestra) played already years before this one during a live show. Epica has a much heavier sound than nightwish and uses more choirs and orchestration and includes grunts too.

Simone performed on some Ayreon songs and videos just as Floor has. The Guitarist From Floor's first band Afterforever helped form the band Epica. Floor shared a room or was it a flat?. With Simone they are good friends. Floor has performed more then one song with Epica and Epica's music is normally a bit heavier then Nightwish because of the use of more growls and guitar focus but that's my opinion. Thank you.

Stabat mater dolorosa = sorrowful mother standing (Referring to Mary during the cruxifiction)
16th century Marian hymn. Arrangement here by Palestrina
As awesome as Nightwish is, they are only one band in a whole genre. Or rather a closely related group of genres - symphonic, progressive, gothic and power metal.
Epica is typically a heavier band than Nightwish

  • @Smilodon1985

Stabat mater is not Classical music, it is Medieval sacred music (pre-Renaissance); it is a sacred hymn to Mary, Mother of Jesus honoring her suffering as she watched her Son's agonies on the Cross (if you go in for such things). You can hear the longing and pain in the Mother's voice as she stands, helplessly, unable to come to her Son's rescue or even comfort, knowing that He will die a terrible death in agony for all the world to see, and begging God to take her instead. It is a beautiful, haunting hymn, whether one believes in the underlying religious stories or not - but keep in mind that during the 1200's, people were significantly closer to the times of the events portrayed in those songs than we are today. Pax vobiscum.

Don't be afraid about pronouncing stuff written in Latin. Usually it just requires you to pronounce each letter.
Please keep going with Epica. As others have said, this is a baroque piece of music with the libretto (lyrics) being even older, performed at their 10th anniversary show where they had a full orchestra and choir backing them up. They obviously cannot tour with that kind of lineup, so it was very much a one-off.
I suggest a mix of new, old and intermediate Epica -- and then you can comment on how you feel Simone Simons' voice changed through the years, a favourite topic among Epica's fans. This video from their anniversary show falls into the intermediate category.

    * Tides of Time, studio version for their _Design your Universe_ album: th-cam.com/video/MFPn1lFDlyE/w-d-xo.html
(The last song I mentioned, Tides of Time, is a ballad in the honourable tradition of rock ballads. My hot take is that if it had premiered in a previous century, its chorus would be classified as an aria and would be very highly regarded as such.)
