I've been hoping you guys would check this out. This is the first movement of a longer suite, the “Stabat Mater”, composed in 1736 by Giovanni Pergolesi. It is based on a 13th century hymn about Mary mourning her crucified son. Pergolesi was suffering from tuberculosis, and died the day he completed the suite. He was only 26 years old. “Stabat Mater” is written for soprano and contralto, though the contralto line is often performed by a counter-tenor. In the Epica version, Floor Jansen does the contralto line, which is just mind-blowing in itself given that she normally performs in the soprano register. As you just saw, they reduced the arena full of metalheads to stunned silence.
In the middle of a metal concert. Thousands of metalheads, and they loved it. The song is a hymn from the 13th century. The music by Pergolesi in the 18th century. The next song in the concert is called Twin Flames.
For those wondering what Simone said at 7:27, it's "köszönöm szépen" which means "thank you" in Hungarian. The choir and the orchestra at this show were Hungarian.
I know. I probably should've also mentioned that "szép" means "beautiful", as does the "prachtig" Floor said... which I would translate as "awesome" in this case, for it refers to the number itself and to the whole atmosphere of the concert, NOT to Simone as some might have thought.😂 (Kan doch niet zeggen dat zij niet mooi is :) Shall we really turn this reaction channel into a linguistic one? I wouldn't mind though.
Hi Crissy and Tomakazi, I just woke up, 4 am over here. Great to see you back. This song is about Mary suffering because her son has been crucified. The song was preformed during EPICA’s 10 years anniversary concert in 2013. Can you imagine all those metal heads in the crowd getting educated.
The score portraits the sorrow we feel upon reflecting the crucifixion of our Savior Jesus Christ. The fragility of every instrument and vocals depict the scene at Golgotha, entirely and deeply heartfelt in every way. Certain scripture stands out every time I listen to this one. "For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." 2 Corinthians 5:21... Amen guys, and thanks for this reaction. ❤❤❤

Two Epica reactions in one night, Frank will be over the moon (hum, bet that dated me). Interesting twist in the middle of a metal concert. Never been a fan of opera, and this did not change my mind. Stay safe, God bless, keep rocking metal. I'll be in the bunker.
Heretics! Blind and ignorant ye are, yet worry not, for ye shall be enlightened.🔥 No bunker shall save yer sorry @rse when Inquisition comes after ye! I love Floor's and , to a lesser degree, Simone's classical voice namely because they don't use the perfect operatic technique (which is pointless when singing with a microphone anyway). What I strongly dislike is crazy high belts, sustained "money notes" (wink-wink: GLS and Phantom) and saccharine poppy voices - which Simone is quite good at and Floor, thankfully, isn't. I would absolutely lose my mind if she decided to do the unthinkable and record a classical album...
Amazing contrast between Stabat Mater Dolorosa and Martyr of the Free Word. Who would think they were from the same concert? There is also the instrumental ‘duet’, between the solo violinist and lead guitarist, Isaac which is magical. It is a classical piece called Presto, by Vivaldi (I think)… th-cam.com/video/kDsUjbOX3xg/w-d-xo.html
Not really Opera, but classical and beautiful. A religious monk reviewer watched this and said it is usually sung by 2 male singers. He thought about it and discussed how unusual and appropriate it was that 2 women would sing about Mary grieving her son's crucification.
This Pergolesi version is scored for soprano and alto. It can be, and has been, performed by any combination of singers, including all the 4 female voice types and countertenors. Interestingly, in this performance Floor is taking the alto part.
@@noneofyerbeeswax8194 Interesting info, I was aware of Floor taking the Alto part, and I think it is because she may have a stronger lower register than Simone, and she can do it. I love the sound of Floor's rich lower chest voice.
@@ecbftl Yes, she does have a strong lower register for a soprano and more range than Simone, so she is capable of singing the alto parts (to a degree). This is not the only song Floor does it in. I love her classical voice, namely because she doesn't stick to opera conventions and doesn't normally use the "perfect" technique (which is meant to help project the sound without a microphone and is kind of pointless when using one). I love her voice in general, exception being when she tries to sound poppy, which she does quite a lot these days.
Floor has a softer richer tone which lends itself to the alto part whilst Simone has a brighter tone and, arguably, slightly higher register so it makes sense she played the Soprano part.
Jezus taken from the cross by mum. And I ain't even religious but wow. My loved ones know this is one of the 5 when when I kick the bucket. Pergolisi. He had a brilliant 26 years (and I can't hardly tie my shoes :)

Oboe is not on the slide. Oboe is similar to clarinet, they both belong to the woodwind family, together with bassoon (lower tones) and flute (higher tones), although flute is often made of metal, not wood just wood. What has the sliding part is trombone, belonging to the brass section of the orchestra. 🙂

More precisely a Baroque piece, not Classical, although people often call any older music 'classical'. 🙂
