Android tablets get a bit of a bad rap since Apple dominates the market with the iPad. Samsung made something truly ULTRA that can be used every day, but do you really want to spend $1100 for the Ultra version?

Yes, just too bad that they didn't ship Windows 10/11 or Ubuntu Linux (or some other distro) on this device, even ChromeOS/ChromiumOS would've been better than Android since it has X11 & I think also Wayland support so you could even run Steam (desktop) and LibreOffice on this device but hopefully DeX can be updated in the future so it can get X11 application support or someone unlocks the bootloader and installs desktop Linux on it; Definately better than the latest iPad in terms of feature set (for now)...

I'm pretty sure it does have double tap to wake and lift to wake, it just has to be turned on in the options menu. I have the predecessor (S7 plus), and it supports both.
Also, considering the cover for $70, the price is actually pretty good for an original Samsung cover (apple as well), especially with that nice kick stand. If you look up the price for the keyboard cover then you've got a reason to complain; the price for this one seems alright to me.

It seems like a few people don't know how to use DeX mode, so here's a tutorial (assuming you haven't edited the quick settings): swipe down twice from the top of the tablet. There should be a DeX button there, or on the next page (swipe to the left from the right side of the shade). Click it, and agree to the TOS. The tablet will show you something that looks like a boot animation, where DeX appears from behing the samsung logo. The screen may appear to change in brightness, and it might take a while to turn on, but this is normal. After that, well... you'll see ;)

Right? I got on a bit of a tablet hype after watching the LTT budget video, seeing if I could use the Tab A6 Lite for school notes. Then I looked at refurbed S6s, THEN, I found the S7 FE. The size of the S7 plus, even the same size and lightness of the Tab S8 Ultra being reviewed here, it's shocked me how good it is. It beat out my Dell Latitude I was using by a mile, and it made me realize how far tablets had come (for context,t he last tablet I used was an iPad 2. Not Air 2, the 2.), and just how easy it was to replace your laptop with a tablet now. Now, is it my main workstation? No. That's my PC's job. However, as a portable entertainment center, workstation, and even one's only computing device, I say that Samsung's tablets pack way more of a punch than many are letting on.

    • @ncKetsui
      @ncKetsui 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@sporadiceel6246 Exactly! For basic office stuff like Excel, Word, web browsing, and basic stuff like that, you can definitely replace your laptop with a DeX tablet like this one. Also, Apple iPads may be powerful, but Apple keeps them heavily segmented to avoid cannibalizing their Mac lineups. The same thing with iPhones, good luck using features like split-screen or having a stylus in one of them. I haven't found any android tablets I would have bought for years. The last Android tablet I bought was the Nexus 7 2013 but I finally decided to upgrade and I decided to just get the Galaxy tab s6. With devices made within the last few years. I feel the hardware is pretty good to handle the demands of average users. I think for the value and you don't mind buying something that is a year or two older than Android is a great bang for your bucks; especially if you just look at the refurbished market as well. Not to mention that Samsung is going to offer four years of major OS updates and maybe an additional year of security patches. But if you buy brand new at release dates then iPads are a better deal because they are around the same price but you get an average of six years of updates. The trade-off might be some of the hardware specs like iPads usually have lower base storage memory and lack a micro-sd card slot. At the time when I bought the tab S6, it also had a newer design compared to if I bought a iPad Pro for about the same price then it would be an older iPad model with those thick bezels and the front home button. Overall I enjoy the Samsung tab and the features it has like the DeX mode. On a side note, Samsung also usually has good trade-in offers or deals compared to finding deals on Apple products.

I like the results you can get from Goodlock, but Goodlock is completely shit tier software. First of all: Garbage name. "Goodlock." Why would I look for UI customization by that name? I guess in a very early version of the software it was only for customizing the lock screen? Second, it's not really one app but like, 15, that have to be installed and updated individually. And of course, every time they push a new version of Android, Goodlock breaks for awhile, and then it's different once they do get it going again.
Samsung could lean into the customization aspect and really build Goodlock into OneUI, but they don't. Instead it feels like something six junior devs do off the clock.

I own one and I must say I really love it. I had the option to choose between WiFi and the 5G option and tbh I just need WiFi on this stupid big thing. Performance wise this thing can pack a lot. Even some rather performance hungry games with 3D model rendering and that stuff. No overheating and no great battery drainage.
And the DeX mode for working makes it to a true office tablet. All in all it is a pretty decent combatant to the iPad in my humble opinion.

So I was considering getting one to use as a second screen on my laptop and as a drawing tab with tablet functionality as sort of a bonus as I was already looking at portable screens.. but you didn't test or review any of that. Or the keyboard or dex.

To be fair. The S6 was a GREAT tablet. The S7+ was till recently one of the best tablets on the market with THE best screen on any tablet. Android has really been advancing mostly thanks to Samsung over the last 2-3 years. As an artist I love the flexibility my S7+ gives. I always saw Procreate as too limiting.

I'm actually potentially interested, can we get a deep dive on this tablet series? Since I'm not into the Apples a tablet hasn't been on the table in a long time but this might change that. I will also admit I haven't looked at Android tablets in years, is there anything on a similar level to this that isn't Apple or Samsung?
Things I would want to know for the review:
    - How is the battery life? I potentially want to use this for college.
    - How well does the desktop mode work?
    - How is reading text for a good amount of time? Like reading an e-book for an hour. Does the oled just burn your soul with its brightness or does it burn through your battery?
On a side note, I really like Johnathan is giving Android a serious shot. I know it won't make him switch as Apple does genuinly have many advantages but so does Android, especially when it comes to customization and personalization. That has always been the main reason I was unable to switch to Apple. I have some many small things I do in a specific way because they work for me and Apple's way often just does not gel with me. That and some of the silly limitations of certain apps/base functions. Like, yeah I get you market privacy but if I want to record my calls, something that has saved my butt on several occasions when talking with businesses, I don't want my only option to be connecting my call to some random persons external service so they can mail me the sound file. That is objectively dumb and very insecure.
Anyways, that's a tangent :P If Apple let users customize just a bit more I would switch in a heartbeat. I don't want to be tethered to Google. It's bad enough that TH-cam is the only video platform that is worth using.

hey there bud, so i own the tablet and maybe its been a while but i have quite some answers for you!
1.Battery life is pretty good, i use it mainly for editing, streaming videos, drawing, or just starndard stuff id do on a laptop and it holds up well.
      2. the dex mode gives you the feeling of working on windows. i do love the way it feels like one too.
i cant really answer that as i dont have many ebooks on it but when i do, ill answer you!

So I have a Samsung Tab S7 +, and I daily ran a 2012 Tab Note pro 12.1. The App marketplace is great, now I could do most things on my phone that I can do with my tablet. However for my daily house stuff and my table top gaming the availability of apps and how easy it is for developers to update them makes great, and combine that with the large screen makes for easy reading when reading articles and managing PDF's and manuals for things like DnD or tabletop wargaming. I just have the WiFi version as if I'm traveling with it I can hotspot off my phone. The build quality is great, the screen looks great, battery life is great, and app support is really good.

big tablets like this are great for musicians. Being so big, you can read sheet music easily, you can have all you music easily accessible without flipping thru a giant ffolder, or for me, muiltiple folders. I might have to get something soon.
