"Which one is chess again?" I feel like this question would horrify some people but it gave me a chuckle.

Yeah! But thinking about it: The household I grew up in during the 80s basically had chess, Monopoly, Clue, a deck of conventional playing cards and two or three kids games.
The two kids in this video grew up in a household that has probably seen like .... maybe ... around 300 times that number of games? :D

Absolutely. I thought it was funny as well.

Love these family reviews! I play a lot with my kids and it’s great to get the view on games from a younger perspective.

Wow, Tom even blinged out Onitama! I’d love to get those glossy cards for mine.

I think only the base game had the gold foil none of the later expansions have been upgraded if I am correct

Still wondering where the big box version or the complete expansion version of the game is. The cost of each individual expansion to components ratio keeps me on the hold fence. The packaging just seems so wasteful.

This game reminds me of Cairn. Where everyone has access to the same moves and when you take one you switch what moves are available etc, and you are trying to get to the other side and capture opponents.

I picked up Onitama only because it had the DT Essentials on it once upon a time. Might get this expansion just to change it up a whole lot.

Tom where did you wind up getting those upgraded cards?

    Love Onitama!
Classic game and this expansion will change it up alot and add some freshness to it.

Sounds great. I love games like Fog of War Chess and Outwitters.

I loved the idea of Onitama and got it based on DT and others’ reviews. I really like the game, but sadly no one else seems to. I think the resemblance to chess intimidates people. Sadly, I’ve only managed to get it played a handful of times.

I think base Onitama and Sensei's Path are absolutely essential. Way of the Wind is really good and just adds another layer for the advanced players.
But light and shadow feels like a completely different game because it moves the game from perfect information to hidden information so if you lose it doesn't feel like you deserved it the same as in previous sets

    AAAAAAANNNNDDDDD
    IT'S GONE
No really, the expansion is listed OUT OF PRINT!

I like onitama but my wife doesn’t. But she does like hidden movement games. Maybe we would both like this one?

I think the expansion could make cheating a temptation for some people.

Sure, if they're the same type of person to move their ships in Battleship to avoid a "hit". In that case I probably wouldn't play games with them in the first place.

Cool idea.. but no thanks, Based Onitama is all I need.

I like Onitama but it's a shame The Duke never took off in the same way. I much prefer the amount of variety it offers, and the moves being on the pieces themselves is even more streamlined.
The only knock against it is that you have to memorize the backs of pieces, but that comes quickly enough from just playing it a bit.

I never played the duke, but I have Jarl. I really enjoy it. Unfortunately it hardly touches the table :(

Yeah I have the Duke and several of the expansions. Didn’t realize it was out of print until I went to see if I could pick up the three musketeers(I could’ve sworn I owned it already but 🤷‍♂️). I was really surprised to see that.

I don't care about the expansion, but the foil accent cards are awesome.

A bit too much honesty required for my tastes...
