I had enough information right there and just didn't see it; gave up and went to watch dear Simon, who got to where I'd got in about 15 minutes, did not miss the essential clue, and unravelled the rest quickly. @Daniel Dreamgazer yes, this sudoku includes some special rules in addition to the normal rules. So, besides rows, columns, and 3×3 boxes all needing to have digits 1 through 9, this one includes "Killer Cages" (which are difficult to see here). The the KC are sets of squares whose digits have to add up to certain values. In this puzzle, the KCs are all within the standard 3x3 boxes (no crossing borders), and have to have a value equal to the other KCs in their 3x3 box (so, if one KC in a certain box has, say, digits 1, 5, and 9, which sums to 15, then any other KCs in the box also have to sum to 15 with their digits). Some squares within 3x3 boxes are not part of KCs. The final extra rule for this particular sudoku is that the KCs within each 3x3 box have a value that is unique from the KCs in all the other 3x3 boxes.
@Cj Mars This means that the reason he started where he did (in the top right 3x3) is because it didn't have any squares that weren't part of a KC, which means that he could divide the standard 3x3 box total of 45 by the number of KCs in it (three), to figure out that they each shared the sum of 15.
His next step, in the top middle box, I think was chosen because it had only one square that wasn't in a KC, so he narrowed it down to the three digits it could possibly be using similar division logic.

he started in the top right becuase it was completely filled in with cages so he was able to figure out what the cages were worth in that particular box (15)

That was tough, yet brilliant. I had to give up last night, was too tired for this beast. Managed it this morning, but took around 90 minutes
Similar path as Simon, although my reasoning behind the early 9 in box 2 was slightly different. I had the options down to 3,6,9 the same; and the 7,8,9 triple in column 5.
This meant 7,8,9 had to appear in c5 or 6 in box 2. If all three of them were in the two cages in those columns in box 2, then one of the cages would have to have (at least) two of the digits, making the cage sum to at least 15. But then all three cages would have to sum to at least 15, breaking the 45 limit on the box. Therefore, one of 7,8,9 has to go in the free cell in box 2, and from the options, this has to be 9.

I'd say the best way to remember 'udukos' is that it's 'sudoku' but rearranged so that the letters of 'sudoku' (being 123456) are ordered 236541, so right to left on the outside (1-2),moving in one letter and reading left to right (3-4) and then right to left again for the inside numbers (5-6). I don't know if this makes sense, I'm very drunk and it's 3am and I'm watching a sudoku video

Interesting puzzle. edit: Argh... just realized I was trying to eliminate the 6 from the two cell cage in the center box for the longest time and Simon just says "It can't be 15. That's already used in box 3." And I knew that. Completely escaped me when I was solving. I could have saved a lot of time there.

I DID IT! I actually beat this sudoku.
After watching three of these videos and learning a lot, I paused this one when he put in the "369" after five minutes and figured it was time to see what I could do on my own. I've never solved sudokus regularly, and I've certainly never done a pro one with special rules, so it was one hell of a challenge. It took me two hours to even get the first number, and I almost felt like crying when I did. Every time I figured something out, it just felt really good. I made a few mistakes along the way and had to backtrack several times, but once I filled out the whole board after 277 minutes and clicked the check mark, everything looked fine. I don't know how many people have solved this one, but I'm genuinely proud of myself for this achievement.

  • @fbrume

Really, really rough (over an hour with interruptions). I felt proud of myself for one early insight: after getting the 789 triple in C4, I realized that 7, 8 and 9 had to go into different cages in the upper-middle 3x3 (since the sums were 12, 13, or 14). That pushed a 9 as the sum of that cage, and led to a nice bit of progress until I got completely stuck as I failed to notice the 78 pair in row 3 for a good 20 minutes. (The separate cages for large values was a trick I then used later on the right and I think one other place.)
