Woah, the colonialism comment came out of left field. 😅 Trust me, most Swedes don't think about colonialism when we talk about the UK. Her accent tells me she is not even Swedish, probably a tourist.

But Swedish people absolutely think about colonialism. At least the ones educated on the matter. However, they also know that Swedes did the same thing, albeit at a much smaller scale.

She sounded Dutch. Holding current generation responsible the way she did, for past generations, is ridiculous. "They have to be kind of funny to make people forget what they did with colonialism" is a pathetic answer. All countries have a dark past. I bet she is one of those that ignore what other countries did in their past. It'a a tiktok trend hating on UK for colonialism, while not knowing much or anything about it (mostly by very young people) but she seemed way to old for that. We don't hold the current German responsible for WW2 for example. She was the perfect example of how to NOT learn from the past. Too bad she was in this compilation.

I am from Sweden and I love the British Isles, their nature, their history, and their people. Most of my favourite bands are from the UK: King Crimson (Robert Fripp!), Van der Graaf Generator (Peter Hammill!), Genesis (Tony Banks!), Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, Camel, and Deep Purple. There are also great ancient monuments, great litterature, great actors, and so on.
When it comes to politics I am sceptical about how the the European Union works, but Brexit seems to be a mistake.

Always had a positive feeling for the UK and had nothing but positive interactions with english and scottish neighbours and teachers growing up. First time I travelled through the London subway on a vacation in England, my brother, my cousin and I got stopped by some locals who insisted that we looked like the beatles and couldnt praise us enough. That was interesting.
Also, UK = birthplace of Warhammer and fantastic culture of miniature wargames and miniature railways etc. 10/10 😉

1:18 I am ashamed as a swede to hear her say that. Like most countries did bad things in history. I don’t look at a person and be like ”your ancestors did bad so you have to pay up with kindness” That’s the wrong kind of kindness. Be kind cos you want to and cos it’s you.

Swede here, and a bit of an anglophile, or fan of UK culture. I love the humor. The Pythons, Blackadder, lots of the panel shows where there are so many comedians that are genuinely hilarious. Lately I've been religiously watching Taskmaster, and I keep falling in love with pretty much every contestant on that show.
I think language and playing around with language is a big part of what makes someone British. Ranging from someone Cambridge sophisticated, say Stephen Fry, to some cockney rhyming slang gangster, to a Scott (hey!) that is a bit more taciturn perhaps, but still has a poet living inside (Robert Burns).'
We are similar in that there is some reservation, a self doubt that makes one not assume that every other person really wants to talk to you when there's no reason for it. You and us both lubricate that situation with some beers and eventually find out people are kind of nice.
As a food person, I think the reputation for the UK having terrible food might have been deserved some decades ago, but has much improved since. Swedish food has a similar history of being a little bit bland and naff. We didn't import and then change Indian cuisine to the same extent that Tikka Masala became the national dish, we're still stuck with being seen as the land of meatballs and rotten fish.
Music. I mean, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Joy Division, Radiohead, the list could be made endless. Incredible bands that would end up on any sane list of most influential.
Sorry about the big text dump, much love from Sweden. Now why you had to go and brexit, that I can't get. Not that I think the EU is that great, but I'm a little bit bitter about the people that I feel most kinship with outside of our nordic neighbours (yes, even you Denmark) flipping us the bird. It made me sad.

I think swedes in general do not realise how very different Sweden and the Swedish mentality are from the British.
I had to react on your comment now 'cause one thing is very very different: we do eat better food in Sweden. More diverse, much better more nutrient bread - and we DO NOT destroy our veggies overcooking them as the britts do.

    • @matshjalmarsson3008
      @matshjalmarsson3008 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@annikaerf I guess that all depends on where one is, and when.
Traditionally we overcooked our vegetables a lot. But the UK is quite a bit smaller, so less diversity makes sense. I never thought about it when I was there, but then again I was only in like 15 cities.
Sure, we're different, still, they have Sunday Roast and we have söndagsstek; they have Black sausage and we have blodpudding; we both have a number of savoury pies; they have Pancakes similar to ours (but also US style); they have Haggis and we have Pölsa; they eat Turkey and we eat Goose; they eat Yello Eels, we eat Smoked (or inkokt) Eels; we both eat lots of different kinds of Fish and Seafood; traditionally we both ate lots of Potatoes, Peas, and Carrots; we have both embraced international foods (and butchered them); traditionally we both only used salt and pepper for seasoning...

British people are usually polite and helpful in my opinion. They usually try to avoid offending anyone. They generally love football, publife. They absolutely love eating curries and they call most stews curries whether they use curry powder or not. They have food with funny names, such as Toad in a hole, Spotted dick and Mince pies which have no mince in it but is a sweet cake. Most love yeast extract on their sandwhiches called Marmite. They love fish and chips and I agree, it’s super yummy. Awesome people. They speak very beautiful English and have good manners generally. They hold up the door for you. In Sweden that is not always the case but you might find people not caring about if the door shuts behind them although someone is walking right behind.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but my personal impression (granted, I've only visited Uxbridge and London) is that the UK is like a mix between the US and Sweden. I've been to several places in California and Seattle/smaller places in Washington before I went to the UK, and it's definitely a mix between Sweden's depressing weather, flora, self-deprecating type of humor, vast history, old architecture and the U.S. politics, "greatest nation attitude", overall city feeling in comparison to Seattle, outgoing locals wanting to chat about Sweden et.c. A very weird feeling, but I liked it a lot. Will try to go to Scotland/Edinburgh this summer, so I'll get a perspective other than England!

  • @mrjallo9912

When I was a kid, I thought about the parts of UK as a family (cousins to Ireland), just like I imagined the Nordic countries. Although Sweden would correspond to England (big brother or sister), being a little brother myself (from Sweden) I’ve always sympathized with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (and Ireland) in disagreements with and football games against England (or most other national teams). Particularly since 1992, when the European championship was held in Sweden, and the Scottish supporters seemed to be incredibly friendly. Otherwise, I liked England too. Growing up in the 90’s, I watched Premier League with my brothers or friends every weekend and we all had our favourite English team (mine is Forest). There was this betting game consisting of 13 English football games once a week, sometimes teams from the lower divisions were included, and we spent hours on studying the tables in the papers (this was before we had internet at home) and the last results of Oldham, Port Vale, Doncaster or Wycombe Wanderers. And later on, when Henrik Larsson played for Celtic (and PL moved to a payment channel), we followed the Scottish league.
British humour, film, fairy tales and legends, books and music were also important parts of my childhood and youth. Fawlty Towers (reruns) and Monty Python, of course. Prime Suspect and many other excellent crime series. King Arthur, Lord of the Rings, Narnia. The Tales of Beatrix Potter was shown on television every Christmas. Ivanhoe on New Year’s Day. Jane Austen film adaptions (and her and Emily Brontë’s novels, which deeply affected me as an adult). Roald Dahl. Not to mention The Famous Five by Enid Blyton, probably the author by whom I’ve read the most books (as a child). Further, I admire British film directors such as Ken Loach, Mike Leigh, Antonia Bird and Andrea Arnold from England and Lynne Ramsay from Scotland.
Concerning music, almost all of the best bands from the 60’s and 70’s appeared to be from the UK. I listened to my parents’ Beatles records and my brother’s Queen compilation, and then discovered the rest (an ongoing project). My favourite contemporary bands during my teenage years in the 90’s were also mostly British (and Irish): Oasis from England, Manics and Catatonia from Wales, Belle and Sebastian from Scotland (and Cranberries from Ireland). Lately, I’ve been listening to Cerys Matthew’s (of Catatonia) solo material (some songs in Welsh) - I love her voice, accent and spirit. “Road rage” still affects me in the same way as it did in 1998.

You were one of the founding countries of EG (former EU for those who doesn’t know) so it seems a little odd, and very sad, that some british politicians’ managed to vilify and slander something your country once helped starting. Would not mind if you re-entered!

My experience living in the UK for a while was not that people were overly polite or nice, but people were way more open socially. Strangers would strike up conversation in situations that basically just don't happen in Sweden. I especially remember how every time i went out to a club or something, people would talk to you and you ended up with company and even new friends very easily as compared to here in the frigid north.
On the downside you guys don't know how to build houses. Houses in the UK suck. Learn how to use insulation and double glazed windows you barbarians 🤣
But i think in general there were more similarities than differences. The UK was a great place to live 😀

Also there's this thing about alcohol - drinking a bit too much

UK is a viking colony, but that is history along with the UK's colonisation, England has posh teatime, bacon & eggs/fish&chips, then they drink beer and become football hooligans, while Scotland wears kilts play the bagpipes, eat haggis, drink whiskey and start fighting for no good reason. Wales are the Danes of the UK, they fail in articulating the words.
