@@Purple_flower09 but the main reason we managed to resist Hitler and the axis powers as a whole was because of colonialism. We had a massive empire with the resources, territory and industry to stop the Nazis rampaging across the globe and we did it not just with British soldiers but with soldiers from all across the empire. Without the British empire Germany could have won the war and as a result democracy would be non existent in Europe to this day so you should be proud of the UK'S colonial past as you are only living in a democracy today because of it

Sweden has a very, very dark history of practising eugenics until 1976...Sweden cannot and should not claim any moral high ground. The woman who made the comment about the UK humour clearly doesn't understand UK domestic history during the empire years and comes across as kind of bigoted and ignorant. The humour stems from coping with adversity (ask any reputable psychoanalyst...they will explain the concept of humour in maturational depression). The UK industrialised with the empire....and the vast, vast majority of the population lived in dire filth and squalor in the newly emerging industrial cities (and still do to an extent...as that chap said, the UK does not look after it's poor well). A huge proportion of the population (myself included) have Irish heritage as refugees of famine. It's not a one-dimensional issue. The French, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese are also known for their self-deprecating humour as a way of coping with their colonial past too...NOT (no offence meant to people from those places but you see the point I'm trying to make?).

Without wishing to sound overly defensive I always get frustrated when people talk about 'they' and colonialism in Britain. I consider myself English, but my paternal Grandparents were Irish and my maternal Grandparents were from the Highlands of Scotland, both places which suffered greatly at the hands of the English upper class. Up until recently many working class English people were in workhouses, and parts of the country still suffer from extreme amounts of poverty. It was in the main the English gentry, aristocracy and upper classes that benefited from 'the empire' and despite still being very wealthy and owning huge swathes of the land in Britain/England - these people are a tiny % of the population and certainly don't represent your average Brit.

Mate, all of us in the UK have benefitted from colonialism. Where do you think the money came from to fund the industrial revolution? Colonialism is what catapulted the UK into a top world power. All of our infrastructure, social infrastructure and institutions have benefitted from colonialism.
Instead of shying away from it, we should just accept and acknowledge it. It doesn't mean you need to feel guilty about it but we should acknowledge the harm it has done and the advantages it has given us.
Doesn't matter if you are an aristocrat, from anglo-saxon stock, working class, descended from slaves or even a recent immigrant to the UK; if you live in the UK then you are benefitting from the UK's colonial past (to differing degrees).
You only have to see the decline of the UK in world standing over the past 70 years to see how we are just a minnow country (with our standing being propped up by our spread of the English language, establishing London as a financial hub during the peak of colonialism and membership in the EU).

Just for anyone reading this, not all Brits think like this, or believe the hype that we 'civilised' the world like Great White Saviours. Some of us realise that ancient civilisations like the Eqyptians, the Mesopotamians, the Persians, the Indians, the Chinese, were building pyramids, advancing medicine and scientific theories, developing complex political systems, and founding powerful dynasties, whilst the indigenous Britons were painting themselves blue and building huts out of mud. I'm not going to enter into a discussion about the brutality, the genocide and the oppression that the British Empire brought with them while they 'civilised' the nations they conquered, or the disgusting views those Britons had about the people they ruled over, but suffice to say, 'doing more good than harm' is a bold statement that history will not treat kindly.

What they dont say is the three times we were colonised as a nation and used as slaves. That we were also taken as slaves by the North Africans to work in their quarries. However, the colonisation helped civilise us, the same as we then went out and tried to civilise other nations. It is never good at the time but you do reap benefits further down the road. Many have only reverted to type once we left. The reason you will be seeing comments like mine is because we are told we cannot be proud of the UK or we are far-right. We should be ashamed of our country because of our past. Never other countries who did the same, just the UK. Never Germany after two world wars. But we should be proud. The UK has given the world one hell of a lot, including the world wide web, the industrial revolution, the world's common language. The abolishment of slavery that we led the march on and funded a Navy for, for many years which took some of our power because of what it cost us. I could go on. The guy who says Brits don't give a damn about the poor is partly right - the ruling class and the media certainly don't, and neither do the hardcore of traditional Conservative voters. However, most ordinary people do care, and spend a lot of time volunteering, raising money for charities and trying to help people who are worse off than themselves. Inequality has exploded here over the last 10-15 years, and it has been extremely painful to witness - I live in one of the most deprived cities in England and it has been awful to see more homeless people sleeping on the streets, and food banks unable to meet the high demand.
Our backward political system and terrible media make it look like we're an uncaring cold country, but if you actually survey people about their opinions, the majority of people are just as centre-left as the rest of Northern Europe. Scotland certainly is - which is why I really hope they vote for independence if they have another referendum. Sadly England will never be able to escape the ruling class which owns it.

You can say that about any country. I would never go to an Irish pub. Unless it is in Ireland. I only liked country pubs. The boys joke works in most countries. The UK is known for being a great importer of goods from around the world. Unlike some EU countries that were not like that in the past. The UK was more open on imports than other European countries before joining the common market.

I can't stand Ikea furniture, it's way too uncomfortable. Unlike Swedish cars which have extremely comfortable seats. Should just buy an old volvo and park it outside my house and watch the TV through the window.

I'm suprised that girl said the UK is a ****hole...where did she visit? Lots of not so great places but also lots of lovely parts...
The guy who said **** you for leaving the EU, he also said UK was eternal enemy of Germany. Well that's only true when Germany launched 2 world wars. Prior to that we were on good terms with Germany.
Anyway, the Brits love the Swedes, but don't underestimate the difficulty in managing a larger more diverse population. Sweden is smaller and more conforming, things are easier that way.

  • @Brookspirit

I doubt the ones that mention British colonialism actually know much about what really happened. It's an easy, lazy slur. She should google "Swedish overseas colonies" and "The Swedish slave trade", Sweden isn't innocent.

I resent this idea that we want to be American I love Europe we are European. I have no feelings for America on the other hand really it's total indifference towards them, I don't know why they would think that. I would guess brexit had a part to play in that I suppose.

It's an absurdity that any foreigner thinks we even give a damn what our colonial ancestors did in the past. That's on them; if they want to drag up the past we can all do that.
