Incroyable. Quel homme incroyable cet Aznavour.
We all feel the same with Lara. She is an exceptional artist and her cover of Charles Aznavour's song is masterful. The song is about the difficulty of being gay at a time when it was misunderstood and mocked. Lara has always fought this difference and made 2 songs out of it.
"Je suis un homme Ô... comme ils disent" means "Im a man Ô... as they say" but play with the sound of the lyrics in french and could means too : Homme Ô = homo (homosexual). Plus this way to prononce it, we could feel jugement meaning. And just after "like THEY say"... So powerful.
It's mandatory to understand this double reading of "homme, ô" sounds like "homo", to understand the song (sung in 1972 by a male singer, not gay nor transvestite himself.) "Oh, I'm a man (un homme), as they say"
Until people see this whole concert in reality they don't know Lara. It's peak of her artistry and everything is perfect: her vocals, stage presence, whole staging, setlist, arrangement od the songs, musicians....it should be in some kind of top 100 concerts in music history
This whole concert is a gem ; she is at her best vocally and acting and the instrumentation with piano and a few chords leave space for her to shine: Her Je suis malade in this concert is also dramatic and theatrical
Greetings from Vietnam 🇻🇳. Thank you for the great reaction. I cried when I listened to this song. I first heard the song from Charles Aznavour singing. This is one of masterpiece of French music. Lara definitely is the best female vocalist in the world.
There is a play of words in this song that can't be translated in english. In french, homme means man. So "je suis un homme oh! Comme ils disent" would be I am a man oh! As they Say. Homme oh! / Homo. The song was originaly sang by Charles Aznavour, but I love Lara's version. And yes, thé character she plays is male.
Yes exactly This song from the great Charles Aznavour released in the early 70s was the first in France to defend the Gay community. Lara with La Difference was the successor in the 90s for all the LGBT community. I saw Charles Aznavour singing this in concert and he was also a real actor; in fact he had some major roles in movies and was nominated to Cannes festival . No wonder Lara can relate to his artistry.
yes, the whole play on words with "je suis un homme, oh, comme ils disney" is brilliant. Liza also performed this several times at Carnegie Hall in English. VERY different take but not horrible.
Thank you. It was defiantly challenging. I really appreciate he support and kindness.

A masterpiece by Charles Aznavour, magnified by Lara. La chanson française is full of gems. I understand every word she sings (Je suis Quebecois) and I cry like a child when I listen to her.
This was a simply AMAZING reaction, Brandon. It brought me back to the good old days of your more emotional reactions to Lara (not that they haven’t been great lately, just different). This is a masterclass of acting and emoting out of her.
Well done, sir, I love this song and Lara's performance. This concert has several numbers with a bit of theatrical flair. Charles Aznavour wrote and recorded this in 1972, think about that for just a minute and what it must have meant. He was one of the biggest worldwide superstars and he worked always to lift others up and promote civil rights.
Dear Brandon. Thanks for your reaction. As they say, it's an old song of Charles Aznavour. In 1972 he has already pointed the problem of intolerance with subtility and the loneliness of this part of population. Lara, with her sensitivity and her acting abilility gives an another life to this beautiful song. I love your ability to describe us, with very micro détails, her acting performance to deliver a wide register of emotions without loosing her vocalist skill. And thanks for giving us our émotions without filter. xx from France
I am thoroughly enjoying watching you plummet down this amazing Lara Fabian rabbit hole! I've watched since the moment you discovered her! At some point, if you haven't already, you'll come to realize that Lara Fabian is one of the most talented and iconic female artists of the last 100 years or more! She's so underrated and thankfully....THANKFULLY....she is being discovered by people such as yourself and you are getting her presence out there for new people to discover! Mark my words here...at some time in the future, probably after I'm gone, there will be a movie on her life and it will be spectacular!
Hello Brandon, just to tell you that this song by Charles Aznavour is from 1972, and at that time in France (and surely elsewhere too) the life of "homosexuals" was not a long calm river (they lived more in hiding than now ) and the fight is not over yet (human stupidity has a hard tooth) but we must continue the fight for common respect, good video as usual, a cordial greeting from France, André
I'm just a regular guy, not the kind Lara sings about here, but the part about feeling lonely and watching the world from the outside i can def. identify with. And yes the little looks of hidden anger goes straight to the heart.
in addition to my other comment: the acting is indeed magnificent. The whole concert is one big performing masterclass! Like Fredelin wrote: you can't turn your eyes away. Luckily you can skip back a bit on youtube.
That truly was a vocal, acting, performance, production & more masterclass. Flawless. Props to her accompanist too. He didn't so much as miss a note when she leant on his arm then caressed his head & shoulders; which added yet another layer of visual imagery. Lara Fabian is, IMO, the best female vocalist in the last 2 decades. She's a singer who I could never hope to match, but from whom I learn more with every performance I watch & listen to. She always conveys such emotional depth & sincerity & I think it's awesome, & incredibly brave, how much of herself she's willing to share with her audiences. I loved your reaction. It was very open & honest & perfectly demonstrated how completely she is able to reach out to and affect her listeners. Thank u x
I really think you ought to hear Charles Aznavour’s version. He was one of France’s greatest singers. He was a renaissance man, but also a 5’3”, Armenian immigrant during WWI who got very, very famous worldwide. He wrote 800 songs in his lifetime. Merci.
Amazing reaction Brandon! You immediately got the right meaning and emotion about the song. If this man is proud of who he is He’s also struggled by loneliness This song is a masterpiece originally sang by Charles Aznavour which came out in 1972 when homosexuality and its promotion were still criminalised
I LOVE the play on words "Je suis un homo comme ils disent" and "Je suis un homme, oh, comme ils disent". Brilliant writing by Aznavour. Liza recorded this as well with What Makes a Man a Man? in english. Also wonderful!
Hi Brandon! Wow. I think we all were anxiously waiting for you to react this peticular Lara's perfomance. Now, after seeing this and your reaction, i have to say you really have the ability to dig deep and analyze the story and the performance while yourself are so moved and touched by the scenery. I'm blown away by that. You are so right person to react and point out the details of Lara's acts and performances. This Lara's number is absolutely crazy gorgeous, her acting while singing is nothing but masterclass. Like you said, it's so hard to imagine anybody else doing this. Like this anyway. She is truly one of a kind. And deserves all the praise she can get. Thank you Brandon!!!
I am VERY familiar with that song. I've known it for 40 years... In this translation/adaptation of the lyrics, it is written "homo"... Not quite right. Clearly, the story is about a homosexual. A man with taste and manners of which others would make fun of, etc. The expression at the time was "un homme aux ... ", that is precisely : "un homme aux hommes - a man attracted to men ; and the sensational Lara does pronounce it perfectly well, especially unequivocally at the end. ----- May I say that this piece, like so many written by Charles Aznavour, are incomparable Miniatures Theater Plays. No one like Aznavour could write a song, and sing it and make you believe he had experienced every moment he sings about. He is the only one I can think of who would write such Miniatures, and truly pull them off in concert. Those special songs are meant to be 'acted'. They require a flexible pulse (as demonstrated here), an exceptionally sensitive accompanist of course, and a performer who can portray the character, fully convey the story and the meaning of each word. All this said, WHO else than Lara can tackle those songs ?! ---- Eloquent reaction.
Exactly right. And he was taught that art by one of the best if no The best : Edith Piaf who could evoke a world of meanings with a flicker of her hands and her incomparable voice
Hello, I love your reactions, but this is the best of all youtube reactions🥰.because you are simply authentic, and you transmit your emotion, and that, dear, is precious. I am happy that you have reacted to this song, since it is one of Lara's best performances, I see it and I see it again and I cry from the emotion it provokes in me. Lara is fantastic, she hypnotizes you and puts you into her world and you don't just feel the emotions, you live them one by one. She is not like any other artist that I have heard and seen, she is unique in everything, she can go from crying, to laughing, to anger, to sarcasm, to joy, to being a trasvesti or to being a little girl, she tells not only their stories, but the stories of thousands of people. I admire and love this woman, for me she is the best voice and interpreter of all time!! All of us at some point have felt hurt, disappointed, unloved, but as long as they don't steal our beautiful essence and we don't stop loving, that doesn't matter. I don't know what has happened in your life, but I hug you with my heart. Kisses BE KIND YOURSELF😉❤️😘
This song shows all the power of the French language, how precise, poetic and beautiful ugliness can become a masterpiece coupled with her unique voice and interpretation. I am blessed for having French as a first language
You'll never know what your reaction to Laras performance of this means to me, love the fact that you and others in the world who have compassion on this subject, thank you so much
What a beautiful song from Charles Aznavour, what a wonderful interpretation from Lara and what a great reaction from you Brandon. There is so many reactors on YT but only a few of them are interesting and for sure your are one of them. "Chapeau" (as we Say in french) for the quality of your comments. Greetings from France 🇲🇫 and sorry for my bad english 😉
Brandon, there is a ton of singers' critics on TH-cam! I believe you are the best because all of your comments are honest, interesting and professional. But what I enjoy the most is your capability to express your feelings with intelligence. You're not just limiting yourself to criticizing the quality of the singing performance, you share what the singer and the song makes you feel. Congratulations!
The French lyrics are just killers. Clean sentences, direct yet sober descriptions of surrounding and feelings, extreme selection of vocabulary for a massive message written and delivered in 1972 if I recall well enough) when this kind of topic and situation weren’t “positively and openly” parading around as they are today. Frankly it was daring and at the same time so fair, so just , such evidence that I ,like many others, wonder why we wait so long before things and mentality start changing . Thank you Aznavour .
Lara ,como sempre perfeita. Talento extraordinário ,linda, clássica, que mulher.!! Sugiro reagir a " Lhora", em espanhol, em Moscow, no álbum Mademoiselle Zhivago
Hi Brandon You must listen to the original version of this song, By the great Charles Aznavour 🙏(RIP) love your reactions from Lara's songs I'm a french fan (man 50 YO) and i cry too when i listen to her. Hello from France 🇫🇷
Back to you again about this extremely powerful song: Yeah you are right in your first assessment of what the song is about. Note that Aznavour the Author of the song made an English version which is pretty good as well. Charles Aznavour was extremely daring writing and’s singing that in if I recall the early to mid 70´s. Perception and judgement were different then and this is why he wrote it … sort of enough is enough of discrimination
Have you looked Charles Aznavour? As an early 20 year old I took my mother to see him at la place des arts in Montreal, he was already an older man, but he painted a picture with every song, clear as day in you mind
You should find time to watch Charles Aznavour sing Comme Ils Disent. He wrote this very revolutionary song in the early 70's, and he is straight. Stunning composition.
You have missed, I am afraid, all that was being played and what was happening until she started singing. You know that you cannot turn your eyes away one second when Lara is on stage...
A wonderful song by Charles Aznavour and a wonderful performance by LARA In 1972, Aznavour's Comme ils disent was the first to bring the taboo into the public arena. Paradoxically, it was a heterosexual artist who denounced homophobia in a society that was still very conservative, despite the hippy movement of the 1960s.
Your perception is VERY sensitive and makes near perfect sense, which s extraordinary, since you're not a French talker! Félicittions!!!! You're doing a great job!!! She is «impersonating» a male transvestite/drag queen, homosexual. When Charles Aznavour wrote this song, Paris was the easiest place to live in for gays, but still, then, not so easy. And Aznavour's poetry is SUBLIME!
I cried with you in front of this song by Charles Aznavour. I will come back to her diction of the last sentence which belongs to her alone: on the word "homo", she separates it into "hom-o", sacahnt that in French, man is said to be a "homme". I find it very powerful. T.
This is a great Charles Aznavour song from 1972 and yes homo was and still is a derogatory expression. Here is the original th-cam.com/video/-4-zC8WtwBw/w-d-xo.html
The furtive look over her shoulder...i know that feeling. People 'know' and eventhough things are a lot better, I'm still scared. One night I woke up and heard my downstairs neighbour yelling:" if i see that f**** again, i'm gonna beat him to death.' I'm an anxious person by nature. I know he wasn't talking about me. But it def.made me feel unsafe, stepping out of my door. I live in a supposedly very tolerant society. But i still feel unsafe and very much alone.
I noticed again as she says the word homo, her pronunciation makes it even more special and significant. In the last phrase in French she does not pronounce it as one word "homo". She subly divides the word into "homme" (man) and then "o" with a slight inflection that sounds like "ou", which in French means or. To me it give so much more impact. Loosely translated. "I am a man or, as they say"
In the original french version from the 70's Aznavour was subtle about it by singing Je suis un Homme-Oh comme ils disent... the word for a man in French is "un homme". You don't pronounce the end "e" in the word, by adding the "oh" at the end he brought the subject subtle... clever writing actually
Im french and i've always prefered one sentence of the lyrics at 2 different ways : when she's singing " je suis homo", hearing that i could translate as "je suis homo" or "Je suis un homme ohhh... comme ils disent". Its like without reading the lyrics, people could interprate in 2 different ways.
Hello Brandon, and thank you so much for this video and all the others you have done on Lara Fabian, such an all-rounder artist. I can’t wait to attend her concert on 10th October 2022 in Geneva. I am a native speaker of French, and regarding your question about the word “homo” being derogatory in French, I can say, having had also the opinion of other French speakers, that nowadays, it is not. It is simply the abbreviation of homosexual, which is a neutral term. That said, in 1972, when Charles Aznavour, who is the author of the song, released it, this term, “homo” might have been derogatory, as at the time being gay was not as well accepted as it is now. Thanks again for your videos and please stay true to yourself, when you need to cry, just cry, I cry with you.
your analysis is precious thank you, "homo" is just supposed to mean homosexual, as we need to label anything, it's not supposed to be derogatory but mean people full of judgement made it insulting
Aznavour's management told Aznavour he couldn't do this, and if he did, he had to put a disclaimer on the album cover saying basically "I'm not gay.." He saiid "No! We are all artists!," All of this broke barriers and changed attitudes everywhere. As you gathered, it's about a transvestite who has friends and a life, The title says it all, but this guy has this question: What makes a man a man."
This song was written in 1972 by Charles Aznavour and 50 years later, it is still so true, powerful, touching, moving, heartbreaking
And Aznavour is very good singing it and Extremely audacious at the time it was written and interpreted .
Man, She is Lara Fabian...
Nobody can be prepared.
🙂

I totally agree with you, everyone should watch the whole concert. Just taking individual songs out of it is simply not the same.
Yess👏👏👏
Wonderful reaction. "Being angry " . Yes indeed. As for Lara , as with all great performers, she always surprises her audience.
I feel less alone when I watch your reactions to Lara Fabian over and over again.

A masterpiece by Charles Aznavour, magnified by Lara. La chanson française is full of gems. I understand every word she sings (Je suis Quebecois) and I cry like a child when I listen to her.
Be aware that Aznavour who was straight wrote this song 1967. At the moment that being GAY was still a felony in France.
Thank you for being so open with your emotions; it's so beautiful that you can really see and appreciate her; thank you for this beautiful reaction.
This was a simply AMAZING reaction, Brandon. It brought me back to the good old days of your more emotional reactions to Lara (not that they haven’t been great lately, just different). This is a masterclass of acting and emoting out of her.

Lara ,como sempre perfeita. Talento extraordinário ,linda, clássica, que mulher.!! Sugiro reagir a " Lhora", em espanhol, em Moscow, no álbum Mademoiselle Zhivago
Beautiful and profound reaction to a masterpiece.
What a beautiful reaction video ♥️ thank you for reacting to this song
Great reaction to a great performance. You must watch Je Suis Malada from this concert!
Hi Brandon
You must listen to the original version of this song, By the great Charles Aznavour 🙏(RIP)
love your reactions from Lara's songs
I'm a french fan (man 50 YO) and i cry too when i listen to her.
Hello from France 🇫🇷
You sincerely nailed it. Bravo !!!!!
Thank you for your emotional reaction🥰
You're a man of great empathy...
That is perhaps the most meaningful compliment I’ve ever been paid. Thank you.
Tank you very much for this very touching reaction.
This concert is timeless.
I juste love her.. she's the Best
Unimaginable emotion!
Amazing Lara ❤❤
Back to you again about this extremely powerful song:
Yeah you are right in your first assessment of what the song is about. Note that Aznavour the Author of the song made an English version which is pretty good as well. Charles Aznavour was extremely daring writing and’s singing that in if I recall the early to mid 70´s. Perception and judgement were different then and this is why he wrote it … sort of enough is enough of discrimination
Magnifica Lara
Have you looked Charles Aznavour? As an early 20 year old I took my mother to see him at la place des arts in Montreal, he was already an older man, but he painted a picture with every song, clear as day in you mind
You should find time to watch Charles Aznavour sing Comme Ils Disent. He wrote this very revolutionary song in the early 70's, and he is straight. Stunning composition.
Ta réaction est si authentique… ❤
You have missed, I am afraid, all that was being played and what was happening until she started singing. You know that you cannot turn your eyes away one second when Lara is on stage...
He did not ;) it’s simply not in this cut
Lara Fabian ❤️
A wonderful song by Charles Aznavour and a wonderful performance by LARA
In 1972, Aznavour's Comme ils disent was the first to bring the taboo into the public arena. Paradoxically, it was a heterosexual artist who denounced homophobia in a society that was still very conservative, despite the hippy movement of the 1960s.
""comme ils disent"" means ""as they say""......or what people usually say in general about someone
I feel like watching the movie “Interview with a vampire”, from which I got touched so much. One level above.
You got it sooo right. ! Thank you Brandon 😘
Thank you 🥰
I cried with you in front of this song by Charles Aznavour.
I know it’s not worth much, but I see you, I hear you, I love you and you’re beautiful for exactly what and who you are. Be safe.

Plz listen to I will love again and la traviata you will discover who much our Lara is able to sing any kind of music….you won’t be disappointed
Hey, i'm also going to the concert in Geneva but on the 9th. October😀
your analysis is precious thank you, "homo" is just supposed to mean homosexual, as we need to label anything, it's not supposed to be derogatory but mean people full of judgement made it insulting
Could you believe that she sang that in Russia ?
Aznavour is all over UT with this one in English
I love you Brandon!❤
I love you too, Paul
