Welcome to the fourth video of this series, those of you who already follow us will know that the videos we post are normally short clips of an engine running after overhaul or when it first arrives with us. In this series after many requests we will be following the stripdown, inspection and restoration of a Gardner 6LXB from a 1972 Atkinson Borderer. In this video we continue the teardown until we are fully apart with the crank removed.

I served my apprenticeship working on Leyland, BMC, Gardners, Perkins, Cummins, Rolls Royce, AEC and many other automotive engines. Happy days. 🥰

I've always had a fascination with these engines. I believe the double decker buses that travel west midlands used to use were all powered by these. It does seem incredible that this thing has probably done a million miles. I can't imagine it was particularly well treated for the first 10 or 20 years of its life. I really don't think anything you found was to be unexpected for an engine that has done that kind of mileage.

You have the one of the best formats for those of us who have a love of Gardners, and so easy to follow. These series on the 6LXB will be a great archive for not only the future, but I wouldn't be surprised if Poly-Techs use these videos as a teaching aid! With the aid of pause and rewind, you have certainly enlightened me on a host of questions I have had on both 6LX's and 6LXB's. I laughed at your mate when it was "look what I found in the sump!" - haha, we have all been there tell him! Very much looking forward to the next video.

Do you need a special tool to remove the main bearing caps, I saw one advertised some time ago and was thinking of buying it.

Yes you do need a special tool, Although you can get them out on some occasions without the puller. It will save a whole heap of strugling and swearing with the proper tool
