hi there, great video, i used to work for AEC ltd in the 70s' and we used to have a pump shop for calibration for the CAV and Bosch in line pumps, i think the cut in was about 2.200 rpm, also DPA pumps were set up.great place to work for
At last - a clear concise explanation of how to do this, by someone who clearly knows his stuff. Absolute magic. I've read how to do this several times, but seeing it done makes it much much clearer. I could watch this over and over.....and will be doing exactly that, thank you. Please do some more on the pump/cambox/governor/timing gubbins.
Thankyou for your comments. There will be a bit on the pump/cambox etc coming for the 6LXB currently under build but will certainly look at a more detailed video in the near future.
A very informative video as a retired marine engineer I have worked on Gardner engines and others including a Doxford apposed piston two stroke.I have never seen a Gardner fuel pump recalibrated before it was very interesting.cheer,Roly🇬🇧
That's fantastic how the pump and pump timing machine sound just like the engine, I would like to hear that running a 8LXB pump and see if it sounds like my engine. Bang on adjustment, shes going to sound sweet.
It would be great if you could explain how to calibrate the pump in situ by hand so to speak, if it's not possible to gain access to your wonderful equipment on site.
Hi @keithpullin. It's not something you can really do properly in situ. You can certainly do phasing with the pump and cambox still installed on the engine albeit a long winded process to do and does have a few accuracy issues to contend with. Calibration of the output between the cylinders on the other hand is not something you can do properly in situ as you need to be able to spin the pump at a closely controlled speed for a set number of revolutions with calibrated test injectors attached to then check output against the calibration data. The best you could do in situ for calibration is a rough check if they appear to be out of balance on output from one element to the next. If it is then the pumps really need to come off to be done properly.
Brilliant always wondered how fuel injection pumps were set up. im a retired Marine diesel mechanic. Worked on lister JK and JP 2 cylinder up to 4 cylinder engines Dorman LDT and LBT 6cyl Kelvin Model R and RS6 od Gardner 😊6LX if the captain called in at our dockyard
Thankyou for your comment - There is a fair bit more to getting it all setup on one of these than shown in the video, but if there is enough interests and we have one in that I am not in a rush on we will cover the topic in more detail.
@@MPSVintageDiesels I was an engine builder and tester at Gardner. Part of my job was Calibrating pumps, from memory if fuel delivery is out of tolerance at 1850 RPM by 3% in the measurement glass adjust plunger by slackening off quadrant clamping screw and rotate very slightly the control sleeve. Clockwise increases fuel delivery and anticlockwise reduces it. when in tolerance, seal up quadrants with that special light grey Gardner paint.

Excellent video. You set up the pump for our 3LW and it's been excellent since. Thanks.

Hi Roly, glad you enjoyed the video, we will try to get some footage of it going back onto the engine and up and running soon.

@MPSVintageDiesels looking forward to the next stage of the 6LXB rebuild

The test bed looks old, as long as gravity stays the same, calibration of this analog system should be simple…
How much for a 5lx pump
