I remember that car from my street racing days in the mid 80s. It's was a regular on the cruise scene between RHS and Super shops on Summer Ave. in Memphis. I'll have to do some asking around. Might even be some pictures from it's heydays.
The hood chain is a great throwback! We all had one!

@@johnjoole2258 you chained the hood shut from the inside or people would steal block up parts right off your car.

The quarter panels usually look that good on most Stage 1's.
It's the customer installed pure rubber undercoating via rear tire destruction that keeps the rust away

Great find. If it was mine I would get it inside a garage out of the weather and when ready I would restore it. Brings back memories as back in the early 70's I had a 1970 Buick GSX stage 1 with Saturn yellow paint with blacked out hood with yellow hood scoops and tachometer on the hood facing the driver and a rear wing spoiler with a black stripe across it and going down both sides of the car to a point at the front fenders. Mine had the automatic tranny but with a B&M 2500 stall converter. Only 659 1970 Buick GSX stage one's were built. I have regretted all my life of ever getting selling it. Great car and it was very fast and I have raced a few Hemi engine cars back in the day with it and I won every race against them. They had a nick name of being Hemi killers back then. But it's rare to hear of that. I do miss that car a lot.

I bet you do. I miss it for you. How long did you have it? - A new friend of mine and I were talking about our old cars and I mentioned having a ‘66 skylark and that my granddad had bought a new Buick every other year his entire adult life with the last one being the bicentennial ‘76 Le Sabre, when he pulled out a picture on his ‘70 GSX stage 1 he drove in high school. Beat the heck out her and even cut a hole in the hood so the butterfly catcher could sit above the twin air intakes. “It looked cool.” He said. He sold it after high school for the song they were selling for back then. I couldn’t believe he did that to it and then photographed it. - Youth is wasted on the young.

Must be a Jenkins thing, I had a 1970 GD Stage1 455 convertible, never lost a race in it, raced plenty of Hemi’s beat them all. And everyone I beat said there is no way that is a stock Buick until I popped the good. And yes I regret selling it to this day. That was 45 years ago. Have a great day Mr. Jenkins.

This specifically being a T400 behind a Stage 1, it's an M41 T400, not an M40. Like the Olds W30, W33, & W34 Toronado/T425), as well as the T400 behind a Chevy L72; if automatics were specified, these engines required a beefier trans. w/a higher stall-speed convertor that was also capable of shifting @ higher RPM, while handling the massive torque loads associated w/their respective drive trains. My '70 Delta 88 455 Highway Patrol Apprehender had such an M41 behind its W33 390hp/455.

I'd look for a 1970 455 Buick engine for it or maybe even a 1967-69 400 or 430 engine. Starting in 71 the compression was lowered down into the 8's in all GM engines. The 71-72 455 Stage 1 didn't quite have the power that the 70 did but they were still a good performer. 1972 was the last year that the GM A-Bodies could really be called muscle cars before switching to the big heavy Colonnade body style and losing even more power in 1973. I had a 73 Pontiac LeMans with a 455/auto. Really nice driving car but not very fast

HA! In '72 I was just turning 16 and bought a Ford Falcon Sprint with the 289 V-8 and thought I was so cool. This car would have embarrassed me as it went by and probably put me into therapy for a few years ;). I made up for it in later years with some excellent, low mileage, stock factory hot rods. I personally hate the term "Muscle Car". Wish I had that Sprint back. It surprised a lot of people when they saw my taillights and couldn't catch me until the next stop light....

The term 'Muscle Car" didnt exist back then...It started to gain popularity in the early 1990's to mid 1990's even then wasnt that popular, the 2000's it took off..
The term "Muscle Car" started by a magazine in the mid 1980's.Muscle Car Review ! Before that nobody called them Muscle Cars !! I dont like that term either, but now its here and thats what it is,sadly !! Its like the Diesel guys call their trucks Cummins or Duramax or Powerstroke lol another thing I find odd..Thats toays society ,odd !! I want to go back to 1979 so bad lol...Cheaper late 60's cars and easy women that you could pinch, slap their butt and they turned around and within 5 minutes you were in the back seat of your Buick GS or my case my 68 Charger RT then a high 11 second 1/4 mile 440 daily driver with 3.23 gears..I still have the car,the chick well I was with many and married a girl 12 years younger than me so I most likely could have banged her Mom back in the day lol !

Buicks are great cars and too many people obsess over the lower compression engines after 1970. They still run great with the same tuning. My Buick buddy says there's a big problem with '72 Buick's though. They stopped putting a unique VIN number for the engine on the GS so this car could have started life as a GS 350. The fact that the air cleaner says "GS 455" instead of "Stage 1" leads me to believe that it's likely a GS 455 and not a Stage 1. The Stage 1 emblems will bolt in place of the 455 emblems on the fenders and it was a very popular to thing to change back in the day.
That same buddy has a '72 GS originally a 350 but has had 455 emblems on it since about 1985. The stamped engine code on a Stage 1 is different than the standard 455 so that would tell what the engine in the car actually is. Since it's missing A/C components it might have been changed. Hard to tell on that old car but it still is worth restoring.

Did that 1972 Buick GS Stage 1 Come with the N25 Through Bumper exhaust Option? I could not see it in the Video.

It's actually Gandara Buick and the owner was a long time proprietor of the business. He died around 2008.

In the early '90's a friend of mine bought a '71 GS 455 Stage 1 car. I believe 800 or so were made, so I talked him into getting a presteige plate that read "1OF800".

I know a guy with a 71 GS455 Stage 1 convertible with a column shifted automatic. Only 81 of them were built that year and his is currently the only one in that particular color that's registered in the US. Only 7 Stage 1 convertibles were ever built in 1971 in the metallic green color that his car was painted in

My Dad had a '72 Skylark convertible with a 350 3 on the tree and no power steering, that had to be a rare one, too. It was totaled while parked by a hit-and-run by a cops son who was drunk as a skunk.

Now...I see why the trunk floor was so much more rusty than the rest...there is a main brake cylinder lying...and leaking....What a shame to leave this beauty out in the elements for this long....

Are you familiar with the Sun Coupe Buick produced in 72? A friend of mine had one in high school. I've never saw another one since. Just wondering how rare they are. Great video, BTW.

People tell me that my 1969 Z28 is rare, but at 20,302 built I don't think of it as rare. Cars like that GS or 67 Z28s ... now those are rare.

At 2:15, "fasten seatbelts" indicator on top of dash?
Is that a rare steering wheel?

Had to laugh at the "Grandpa Buick" comment around 3:38. It would have been nice if you had panned the camera down to the brake pedal after showing the odometer reading to see if it matched the mileage.

So what happens with this Buick now? I'd love to see it in someone's garage for rebuild like Danny Coker's Counts Custom.

I always am bewildered by classic cars that have been set out to pasture fairly recently....its not like in 2001 this was just some worthless old clunker....it was a collector car by that time!
