    I have a 74 Buick Riviera that I have had since I was 19 back in 1982, it is in beautiful shape but hasn't been driven in years because I threw a rod years ago. Anyhow I'm now getting to a point in my life where I am able to throw some money in it and get it back out on the street! I will be following your build because, I too, want some tire shredding torque! Only thing is I'm not sure my block is good since I sent a rod through my oil pan. I guess I will find out when I tear it down. I hope I didn't destroy it because it only has 78,000 miles on it and it has never been rebuilt. So mad at myself for driving it with a rod knock!!!!!

    I've been trying since I was a little boy to build my dream engine, I'm trying to build my Buick 455 it's all I ever wanted, I've been trying since I was 9 years old now I have so much knowledge now, thanks for your video

    Great torque on these motors!

    I just bought a 72 Buick Riviera Boat-Tail with a 455 in it last week. If I do end up rebuilding it, I'll probably follow along with your rebuild because 500ftlbs of torque sounds really nice.

    • @RealDeal22
      @RealDeal22 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 70-71 455 motors had 10.25 to 1 compression, rated at 510 pounds torque, you should expect as much stock. Not sure about your '72 motor, though.

    Hello! I'm going to be acquiring a 73 riviera with a 1970 455 stage 1 engine it. Has been sitting for the better part of 21 years or so. I'm sure this series of videos is gonna come in handy when it comes time for the rebuild 😎

    Interestingly, at least for me, was my '79 Electra.
    It was an orphan child. It had, according to the plate, a 350 motor.
    It had, however, a blue painted 403 some cubic inch Olds motor in it.
    There were some lawsuits as I recall, because some iconic Buick owners were quite incenced to find out they had Olds motors in their Buicks.......but that is all that GM had to offer other than the 350 anymore.
    And my 79 ran for years till it hit 120 some k. The motor was strong until something broke.
    I was a big fan of the 455, and owned dozens. Stock. I had a bad problem of abusing them until the oil failed to the number 8 rod. Everybody who knows those engines knows that problem. I tossed the old number 8 in more 455s than I should like to admit.
    It was not until years later that I learned from Kenne Bell Buick what the problem was.

    Haha it's ok dude. Still the most educational videos around. Makes me wish I had chose a Buick 455 for my retro gasser build although it wouldn't be period correct.

    The 455 Olds engine is itself an entirely different animal than the Buick 455, nothing is similiar except displacement. Nothing interchanges.

    Just finished rebuilding my 73 455. Just have to get back into the Riviera it came out of. LOTS of parts from TA Performance!

  • @fredanddebramacdonald2445
    @fredanddebramacdonald2445 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, TA Performance even has aluminum blocks and stroker kits, etc. for that big block Buick. No aluminum heads available for the Buick 350 yet. But intakes and cams are available. TA Performance is basically the only game in town for Buick performance parts, because Poston went out of business during the last recession. But you never know what you might find at a swap meet. It's definitely a challenge finding stuff when compared to Chevy and Ford stuff. But when you open that hood at a cruise night or show, there won't be too many engine compartments like yours.

    I'd like to set the record strait about cast vs forged cranks. I worked for a engine machine shop in Gainesville FL and had a lot of contracts with old machinist. I asked them if they had ever seen an engine failure due to a broken crankshaft. With some 300 years of combined experience they all said the same thing. Every bent or broken crankshaft regardless of material was preceded by other part failures first. Most were piston, pin, rod failures, followed by crank cap and fastener failure. Nothing twist or brakes a crank faster than a loose piston rod end suddenly jamming itself against the block at high rpms. Don't waste your money on over kill cranks.spend the real money on strong fasteners, premium rods, pistons and pins.

    If find a Buick 455 out of a Buick Riviera, it will have a 830 cfm quadrajet carburetor from the factory! I've owned 4 big Buicks in the past, 1972, 1974, & 1976-all 4 door hardtop Electra 225's and a 1974 Buick Riviera. The 1976 Electra was my first car. I still have the 1972 Electra. I put a TH200-4R in my 1974 Buick Riviera with 4.75" rear drum brakes and 3.42:1 gearing. I could cruise in overdrive as low as 35mph at 900 rpm and do 75 mph at 1600 rpm. 90 mph was only 2000 rpm! All with a lockup torque converter! I miss that Riviera!

    • @partisanguerrilla3167
      @partisanguerrilla3167 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +John Lincicum what kind of gas mileage did you get with the 74 Riviera? Sounds like with the low rpm setup you probably did very well in gas mileage regard too. I had a 69 Electra with the 430, awesome power.

    • @johnlincicum6390
      @johnlincicum6390 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My engine was never rebuilt, and honestly my car was a rust bucket from Illinois, but I loved it, but I'm being realistic too. I drove it from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Phoenix, Arizona on 1 tank of gas (one way). If I remember right, that's 421.0 miles (just checked using ok Google and asking the distance). You can check yourself to verify. The 1974 Riviera has a 26 gallon tank, but I literally filled it right up to the gas cap! So I literally squeezed like 32 gallons into my car, but including city driving in both towns and it was more like 500 miles/6 hours without a single stop and I made 20 miles per gallon with a 200,000 mile engine! Imagine if it was rebuilt and pretty much stock still?!

    • @johnlincicum6390
      @johnlincicum6390 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually checked my gas mileage regularly in that car. I also had a 4 core radiator and besides the transmission cooler built into the radiator I had added another very large transmission cooler. I also had a 2" receiver hitch on it and towed from Albuquerque, New Mexico to home (Elizabeth, Illinois) a 6'x12' U-HAUL trailer loaded to the gills at 75 mph. I found Shell brand gas to be the best gas and I could, used 91 octane. Back then in 2008, gas was $4.219 a gallon though for 91 octane Shell in Vega, Texas!

    • @johnlincicum6390
      @johnlincicum6390 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 6'x12' trailer empty weighed 2000 lbs.! My wife had a 2001 Chevy Cavalier 4 door and they weighed liked 2300 lbs.!

    Buick 455, big bore, short stroke. Torque monster. 1970 was the only year for high compression pistons, 71-76 reduced compression. The drop from 71-72 in HP ratings was due to the change for SAE Gross to SAE Net, not to any real difference in the engines.

  • @jamespobega8878
    @jamespobega8878 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 455 Buick is only 50 lbs heavier than the 350 Chevy fully assembled . Which was great at the track .

    Awesome video for a buick 455. I have a 1975 buick 455 engine that I want to rebuild and my goal is 400+ horsepower and 530 ft lb of torque with this engine. So what do you suggest to be replaced and changed in the engine knowing that the 1975 455 have a low power rating (210 hp).
    We are waiting for the part 2 of the rebuild, are going to add it? Very nice and clean job.
