In conversation with tonight’s guest, Javed Hassan. What has his journey been like? Getting into investment banking and moving back to Pakistan. The “Economics Advisory Group” and how it’s working? What’s Pakistan’s current economic situation? What does “default” mean? How much money does Pakistan currently owe and what’s our current account deficit? Why do we need IMF? Credit Default Swap (CDS)? What will the middle class do? Breaking it down for the layman and what he needs to worry about? What decisions should be taken right now? What in the last six months has caused inflation? Has the political uncertainty in the country impacted this? Why aren't we able to maintain our strength in this situation? Where did we go wrong? Elite capture and rent-seeking? How did other countries transform their economy? International pricing, economic complexity index? Which industries should we work on? Is education our main problem? What has our main problem been? What happened after Bhutto’s era? How to reduce corruption? Is there an impact on our financial system? Is there an impact on our financial system and real estate? What does “saving” mean? Is there still hope to change? How does he see the Pakistan of 2050? Catch this and much more in tonight’s episode.

The collapse of Pakistan was foretold by the late Turkish Sufi Saint in 2011. Whatever he said in this video has happened so far and more is to unfold. Pakistan will be broken into several pieces. Pay attention to what he said about Afghanistan and it collapsed into the hands of Taliban right in front of our eyes. Honestly Milton Friedman style free market economy cannot work in Pakistan. It has to be done in a staggered way because if Pakistan opens up it's economy completely and instantaneously it will not have sufficient time to compete and absorb technologies that are available in the global market because most of the technologies are capital intensive and since Pakistan is a labor intensive country the labor component in the output will substantially decrease which would result in mass unemployment. So the government needs to do it in a staggered way. That's my take. 🙂

You're doing a great job and bringing this guy again to discuss the details of how to free the market is important. In the west they still haven't figured it out. JHs argument is bang on. We had (and in many respects still have in some sectors) the exact same problem in India. As he says, the hard thing is to stay in power after the reforms are implemented. Vested interests will stop you from implementing them. The pain will be immediate, the benefits will be in 5 to 10 years. Common man will not feel the benefits soon enough. In India we have free markets and no subsidy in Industry or Services. But stuck with it in Agriculture. The recent attempt to reform agriculture in India is a good example of vested interests. They continue to want subsidy for water intensive crops. Luckily we have atleast stopped subsidies and license raj for other sectors. Another Q for JH , how much of these coddled industries have an army stake. That will make it super hard to fix.

I listened to the whole podcast. It is a very good presentation. But sadly, it will fall into deaf ears as far as the target audience is concerned. When I listened about the mindset in Pakistan, I felt that India is way way better than Pakistan. I also find that many of our top politicians, who also happen to be ministers, are extremely business savvy and they know more about business than many beauraucrats. India doing good in important parameters viz ECI, Ease of doing business etc is happening because of sustained efforts. Unlike Pakistani banks, Indian banks (even government banks) are quite user friendly. India has achieved Financial inclusion. Very high number of Indians now have bank accounts. Deserving sections of society that are to be given subsidies, get the amount credited directly into their account. This is financial inclusion at its best eliminating corruption by the middlemen. India I note has forged ahead. Uttar Pradesh, Indian state with a population bigger than Pakistan, aims to have a $ 1 trillion economy. Just today, projects of over $ 10 billions were inaugurated in Uttar Pradesh. PM Modi was the chief guest. His address was , as usual, like that of a business friendly leader. India has its priorities right, and what is more important, projects are getting completed fast.
