Verry well researched video. A couple of notes for new lance players. Counters (only as a rule of thumb, there are many exceptions) *->* In general: you want to spent as much time hitting and as little time blocking as possible. Time your counters and offensive guard is a must have *->* Counter thrust is the only counter you can do after countering something=good for monster combo attacks like zinogres quadruple paw slam ->Power guard is the only counter that doesnt activate automatically after being hit and its stamina depletion actually stops when being hit = good for multi hit attacks (any monster attack that does multiple ticks of dammage) it also blocks from all directions and has higher knock back resistance. However powerguard takes increased chip damage, so for the love of everything unholy do not use it against somethimg like a nergi dive bomb. *->* Gurad advance gets extra gurad levels=good for power full single hit attacks *->* Clutch claw counter has a really long animation but also zooms you all the way to the monster= good for any monster attack where the monster ends up far away from you (like charge attacks) *->* Normal block is (almost) never your best option *health augemt is a must have* = no more sheathing, non stop attacking Also as a side note amongst the older community there is a realitivly large overlap between SnS and Lance players, so if you like one of these two weapons the other one might be worth checking out. The only critic i have for this video is the whole defense thing. Lance's coutners can be used much quicker than doging an attack, so they are safer when you are attacking but they will do nothing to get you away from the monster. In that regard other weapons are way safer. Espeacially since lance has bad mobility when it comes to getting away from the momster and a really alow sheathing speed. The reaseon why people say lance is good at defense is 1. An image thing and 2. Because they only look at safty while attacking. Ironically other weapons have to play a lot more defensivly and wait for openings, while lance plays super aggresivly. Also the best shield in the game is technically heavy bpwgun with shield mode. Furthermore any weapon can be safe if you put a bunch of defensive skills on it, but most people want to built for as much damage as possible. For those people: At minimum you need guard level 3, because lances shield on its own sucks. Guard 5 is better though in my opinion. Then you need health augment since it allows you to out heal the chip damage. So lances sh*t mobility for disengage and doging and slow sheathing dont matter if you never have to sheath or get away. And lastly you need guard up for some match ups. Hope this helped. Do not go into this weapon thinking yo can make an offensive build and still be safer than other weapons or you will be in for a bad time. Good luck.
Can't say I agree on the last half of the comment. It might really be a question of playstyle and match up, but I think you're over emphasised the necessity of guard skills and health regen. Also there's Evade lancing
@@dima_keller i mean there is a reason why even speedrunners in iceborne will more often than not have the guard skill and health augment even though they are trying to built as much offense as possible. Ofcourse there is always the option of evade lancing, in that case you need to build evade up and thats just not how most people play lance which is why i didnt even think about it. This is however verry much about iceborne, since in other games this isnt always true.
@@zawardo5909 I think you might be forgetting that this is basically a beginners guide for the weapon 😅 Most people won't be able to squeeze out of them the stuff speedrunners do and "not the most effective" doesn't mean "not effective". I just wanted to say that they're not hard requirements or anything like that as I myself used to think early on and you can pretty comfortably play against most monsters without them
@@dima_keller i mean you literally made an argument for my point....speed runers will atleast use guard 3 because that is the minimum guard they can get away with....which means newer players will be even more reliant on the guard skill... you missed the entire point of my argument, speedrunners build guard despite the fact it deosnt give them more damage....have you tried playing guard lancing without guard or guard up against something like a rajang, not furious or tempered just normal rajang. You have to sheath and heal up like every second hit.

YES!!! I love the lance. I really didn't love MH and found the combat more frustrating than enjoyable for me but when I started to use the Lance I feel like the combat tempo finally clicked with me. I really love the lance. Thank you for making a video on it Tera!

I’m new to MHW, just hit HR 50 after 100 hrs. I just discovered the Rathian Spike+ farm necessity and was looking to optimize the time the best way I could, mainly by not burning through items. I was a Glaive/Longsword main. NO LONGER. I have fallen in love with the Lance, and because Rathian is such a fast and aggressive enemy, I was fast tracked into learning its full moveset. I am obliterating everything I fight now, and I feel badass doing it. Most underrated weapon without a doubt.
Thing is, lance "is" the de facto weakest weapon. Its Mhw incarnation is one of the few weapons to actually lose to Hunting Horn and GL depending on the MU. It's not underrated, its damage output simply isn't there if you compare it to the rest of the roster. Now granted, that does not mean that you are not allowed to like lance or play it because you enjoy its play style, but if you find your lance outdamaging your other weapons it's because you do not have enough expertise with those.
Two recent discoveries I've made with lance is that the clutch counter is actually part of the recovery string like the hop. So, it's actually faster to animate into clutch counter after a thrust. Likewise, the advancing guard is actually multi-direction. You can actually advancing guard sideways as long as you execute it as an attack recovery. You orientation won't change, put your location will.
An alternative to dashing with the lance is advancing guard, hop/leaping thrust, (repeat indefintely). You can also use it to attack by back hop, advancing guard and immediately cancel into a leaping thrust and immediately cancel into another back hop, repeat. I hope they bring back the clutch counter even if they don't bring back the clutch claw, since it doesn't require the clagger animation. They can rework the tenderize mechanic into whatever, but it feels SO good to pull off repeated perfect clutch counters on super aggro monsters.
The Leaping thrust - Backhop combo is good in Rise. Not World. World's Leaping Thrust does not do enough damage to justify it and it consumes 3 ticks of sharpness compared to Rise's just 1 tick. But, the Forward Guard Dash into Leaping Thrust chain is a really cool skill to have in world. Agreed.
@@MrPort I only recently mained lance. And actually the coolest thing I've discovered in MHW is that the 'advancing guard' is omnidirectional, despite the name. So it's actually been super cool to back jump/side jump with the shield still guarding after every leaping thrust.
I tried the lance once in a arena fight using the preset challenges. Had no idea what I was doing and still killed the monster and that baffled me. Now that I have the guard up gem after comming back after years of not playing I wanted to give it a shot. Already relearned my beloved charge blade and have been trying new weapons like the great axe now that some friends have started playing for the first time. Defensive but aggresive is my kind of weapon combo so Lance and charge blade are right up my alley. Thank you for explaining so well
The point of power guard is that after the shield flashes, it gives you guard up. At endgame where most players have access to a guard up jewel, this is meaningless. However if you don't have the jewel yet, it allows you to tank something like nergi dive or teostra supernova if you react to the windups in time, though you will still take some damage. Super useful if you're on a new character.
The strong thrust out of power guard is Lance's best wake up attack, and power guard is a quick way to block when you're mid combo. Sometimes an ally can proc your block counter and force you to attack when the monster hasn't hit yet, leaving you vulnerable. I most often fund myself using power guard as a last-second defense against Fatalis's downwards fire breath since it's a big multi hit attack. Normal block is more ideal, but power block is faster if I'm mid-combo or want to stay in that spot after the breath finishes for a strong counter thrust.
A tip that I don't see a lot of people mention is that, you do combos in sets of 3 but the timings for those sets is pretty generous. So if you are anticipating an attack, Poke - Poke - PAUSE - check for windup and if there is none - Final Poke or Counter/Block depending on the situation. I have not timed how long the window is but its around like .75-1seconds or so which is ample time to see if an attack is coming. Mid Thrust, while doing lesser damage, will move your character forward quite a bit and High Thrust will do more damage and not move you as much. Use these moves in combination to reposition slightly during your attacks. Guard Dash into Leaping Thrust is actually a very good gap closing combo as both move your character forward quite a bit. Its so good in fact, you can even catch up to limping monsters with it when you chain them. Hold down your Guard input (whatever input method of choice it is), light attack to guard dash and then heavy attack into Leaping Thrust in that order. Then, while guard is held down, keep repeating the light-heavy and you will do a sort of hop-skip kind of thing. It will take some practice but once its down, its a really cool combo to have. Bonus, it actually regenerates your stamina if you want to go into a Dash attack afterward. In Rise, this is actually a staple combo as Leaping Thrust has been buffed and it consumes only 1 tick of sharpness instead of World where it consumes 3 for the 3 attacks. Except there, you are supposed to do like a jump back-forward thing. Your dodges are short hops because Lance is a heavy weapon. But your backhop is farther than your sidehops. Useful if you don't want to counter/block a multi hit attack like Zinogre's paw slams. Though if you ask me, countering them is easy enough and it makes you feel like an anime protagonist too. Offensive Guard is a must have skill IMO. Its a free 15% attack increase when you counter an attack.
Power Guard take more chip damage than a normal guard, it's good for changing direction, and sometime for conserving stamina. About Fatalis Shield and Fatalis Fireball spam don't mix well, even with Guard 5, it still does heavy knockback, and massive chip damage, so Fatalis can just lock Lance in place if not careful.

One thing about the Counter Clutch I don't hear many mention is that you get a few seconds of knockdown and roar immunity after a successful counter and latch, allowing to you tenderize, flinch or reposition to one adjacent part to pull off the aforementioned before this immunity runs out (most times, depends on the monster), you still take damage if the monster does an attack with the part you're latched onto, so mantles and DB help. You also cannot be cancelled out of the reel in animation unless its very specific monster attacks, like Rajang's Ult slam or Diablos' dig, you can take damage when reeling in though. Health Aug offsets most of that if it happens when you tenderize the part you're reeling into. Clutch Lance is really fun, I pair it with Safe Landing for extra style points. The dopamine rush of having a monster charge the length of the arena and you just get that sick reel in that gradually accelerates right to them.. mmmm.
I first started with the Lance way back on 3U then made the jump to the Hunting Horn. After playing through most of the games, I decided to go back to the Lance after beating Iceborne with the Hunting Horn back on the PS4. I'm currently playing the Lance on Steam, and there are times when it's frustrating, but I am enjoying so far on Iceborne.
GS Main here: I picked up lance after seeing a meme about it, I don’t even remember what the meme was but I remember it causing the thought “I should use that weapon”. And I must say, that it is one of the most fun and engaging weapons in the game.
I was thinking that I wanted to try Lance more since it's the weapon I'm not really using just bc I suck at it. So I think this helps a lot and from here on out it's just learning to adapt to the style of the weapon
Didn’t see this one coming but glad it’s here. Lance always seemed to appeal to me more than gunlance. I’ve seen a few times that some of its best tricks aren’t as effective against some endgame attacks but maybe that’s where the evade lance style is better?
Not sure what exactly your referring to, but there are some match ups that turn into absolute jokes with Evade lancing including Velkhana 😅 Also I personally found evade style lance to be the easiest way to break Glavenus's tail as you can just hop out of the way of his attacks and start poking the tip instantly
i recently watched a video about why no one uses lance in IB-SB and my fascination with the lance was rekindled. the way i see it, no one (meaning very few) uses lance not because it's weak or lame. but because everything else are leagues cooler than it. i main longsword in every game and i switch a lot, avoiding long-range and blunt weapons, also lance/GL but still i got worried about LS taking its throne as counter-king. but coming back to World and crafting my first Fatalis weapon (and its lance) it dawned on me that lance may not be the counter-king but it's the shield-king. it's the most comfortable i've been facing Fatalis and it could be the one that allows me to solo it
When I first picked up the game I tried Lance and it was mid. Went straight to Longsword out reflex. Years later having played a few more titles you learn that the Lance is really easy mode and super fun 😂 poke, poke, poke and bounce - back in poke, poke etc. Would recommend to everyone 🤝🏼
What drew me here was MR Tempered Black Diablos. I'm trying to upgrade my Rocksteady mantle and I'm having a horrible time with my hammer and her constant burrowing. So I thought maybe, just maaaybe, it's time to give lance a shot. I've always been curious to try it but Swaxe and Hammer are my mains.
9:55 I agree, with the one exception that if you're too far and you block a fireball, there's the chance he'll do 2 more fireballs, which isn't the bad part but it leaves you with low stamina even on Guard 5. The bad part is that he can do another set of 3 fireballs, and there's not much escape by then: your sheathe animation is too long, power stance stamina drain does freeze when getting hit but the third fireball takes too long and the chip damage you've been taking is going to leave you set up for a kill generally. But you can counter that by just making sure you never get caught like that: positioning yourself properly around the monster.
The other option you have is to do advancing guards. You still benefit from the full defense, you reduce the distance between you and Fatalis and advancing guard prevents knockback.
You can also hop to the side with the dash attack Jumping attack out of the dash attack is basically a mount on demand in 99% of the situations If you press direction out of the counter thrust you can go into mid thrust instead of a high one Power guard also receives more chip damage, but stops the stamina drain for a short time after getting hit and can block multiple attacks unlike counter. You can basically sacrifice more health for stamina and save yourself from a broken guard with right timings You can go into the power guard out of the failed counter by holding back and pressing B (not sure about the specific inputs, but it's a nice tech) Guard dash is one of the most important things you should be using as a Lance player as far as I'm concerned it's offensive, defensive and is your best mobility option (especially if you ever wanna try Rise is absolutely broken there) Should've really mentioned slinger burst, took me an embarrassing amount of time to realise how useful it is on the lance. Diablos and Black Diablos are jokes, poor Kulu can't even use rocky, flying monsters drop out of the sky, Lavasioth can as well shed his lava armor and don't even get me started on stagger on demand with crystal, dragon, thorn and piercing pods 😅 Really REALLY should talk more about Evade Lancing it is insanely safe even against some of the tougher match ups (it actually turned Velkhana into one of the easiest fights for me 😅) Yes I personally would say Lance is not the best match against Fatalis, but only thing I can compare it to is my second main, which is greatsword aka the best match against Fatty
Also power guard allows to block and attack in 360, so if you're fighting smth fast or really big you can use power guard to block an attack from behind and then turn around instantly with a mighty blow

Starting it was a bit of a shock and I was wondering why something this heavy and clunky even exists 😂 It started to open up so quickly though I didn't even consider putting it down for something else until the guiding lands Obviously wanted to watch the vid to see if I'll find anything new I can learn and to give some advice of my own Yes more people definitely should try it My faves are lance and GS, but at this point I'm kinda staying away from lance just because most match ups are too easy with it at this point
I have been long sword player but now lance has become my fav, nothing can hit you if you master it, with best defence in the game, suprisingly it is very mobile weapon(it is main issue i have with gun lannce) guard dash in leanping thrust to cover short distance and dash charge to cover long. Very precise and accurate attacks, you can target weak zones very easily. I think people avoid this weapon but they don't get guard skill early in the game, without that this weapon takes lot of chip damage i will advice to farm urgaaan set
First off do you play fighting games? I don’t think I’ve heard anyone refer to moves in monster hunter as command grabs lol. Also, think Lance is super underrated. Only picked it up in the last couple months but it’s been super fun. And made my CB play better by teaching me to focus more on positioning.
I think the only reason why people dont play the lance is because its not as flashy, BUT MAN, this weapon is built for people who just wants to brawl. so satisfying. I do wish that there was a charge version of Y and B to finish out the last combo. Like: B, B, Charge B, for a stronger upper stab would of been nice. In Rise, they added a charged Y+B which is nice, but the horizontal slice is situational - so it would of been nice to have a charge B version to hit monster's head who still standing but dazed
(New Lance User) As an agro hunter I just got tired of the trade off of hit, get hit, get up and hit back. So I said screw it I need a big shield and so lance it was. Plus the clutch claw attack is SICK. Sucks that they didn't incorporate it into RISE, hopefully we get to see a variant of it in WILDS.
I’m here because I play SnS and without any upgrades, I can block most things essentially for free. Sure, I get knocked back, but now I wanna see the power of a block that’s meant to be.
I have played lance as my main weapon for about 1 year. I know that is insignificant compared to others, but I just need to put out here that lance does NOT have the strongest guard in the game. That would be a heavy bow gun with shield mod. It is also NOT the safest most unkillable weapon. That would be Mushroomancer SnS. And data collected from many speedruns also placed lance at last place in terms of time to kill. Some attacks are downright unblockable and in most circumstances dodging is almost always safer. No chip damage from dodging. I went into the lance thinking I could have a tanky play style like in other RPG. I had a terrible time. The sheath speed is slow and if I made 1 mistake, I could not heal in time. I basically had to depend on palico for heals. It wasn't until I got healing augments that the tanking dream got realised. What I am getting at is this - perhaps we shouldn't tell beginners that lance is a defensive weapon. It is a weapon that encourages consistent damage dealing rather than a hit and run or obverse and react style of play. Having said all that, I love the lance. It has a unique playstyle, different than most other weapons.
Not many people play the lance because on the surface it looks like it does low amounts of damage AND speedruns with it are slower. For low damage people don't realise the amount of uptime this weapon has. For slower speedruns - speedrunners STUDY all the moves the monster does, the timings, the positioning and PRACTICE it for dozens and dozens of times. This means that even with a much less defensive weapon they have similar amounts of uptime on the monster that they can pull off due to RIGOROUS training, which 99.9% players will never have (and have no reason to have). Speedruns are basically choreography. Bottom line - Lance is a great brawler with high effective DPS outside of speedruns.
In hands of a more or less skilled player I think lance actually is the least demanding weapon to go through the game with I haven't actually played this game much before and most of my time in it is after all the Back to World stuff from Capcom. I came back to it after a couple of years and my build progression looked something like this LR: 🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴 HR: 🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴 MR until Velk: 🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴 Velkhana main fight to Alatreon : couple of Nargacuga pieces and more bones 😂
I rather enjoy the lance. I personally prefer how it functions in rise, but just comparing the games id rather play world. Poke poke poke shield charge, repeat.
Oh the time come I started playing mhw not long ago and remember right before I bought it I asked if you planned on doing a lance video so I’m going to watch this video tomorrow at the moment I only tried lance and just killed kirin and diablo where kirin took 3 attempts because the lightning nearly one shotted me and Diablo’s was on first attempts but was at some point pretty risky because of the location I fought it
I just started world and have loving both lance and switch axe. I played rise when it first came out liked gunlance and insect glaive, but they aren't as fun in world w/o wire bugs imo. Gunlance with no blast dash feels worse than lance with dash to me b/c I like having a movement ability, but like defensive play.

I soloed most of the game with a variety of builds, but mostly poison build. The uptime is amazing. Thats why I think that the endgame is one of the biggest flaws of this game. Everyone runs the same armor and the variety of builds just dissapear.
There are at least 14 different weapons, if you're going for variety, numerous of which have different builds on top of that - for example wide/long GL, elemental vs physical, statuses vs damage and more. Imo the core of the weapon needs to be fun to execute while playing, while the "builds" are simple flavor.
Monsters: got physical power to kill living mountains, horns bigger than cars, jet wings, power to summon lightnings, whatever tf else Lancer: Nah I WON 😂😂😂

Two recent discoveries I've made with lance is that the clutch counter is actually part of the recovery string like the hop. So, it's actually faster to animate into clutch counter after a thrust. Likewise, the advancing guard is actually multi-direction. You can actually advancing guard sideways as long as you execute it as an attack recovery. You orientation won't change, put your location will.
Been trying this weapon out for a couple days and I'm having a blast. Definitely a underrated gem of a weapon next to the Hunting horn.
An alternative to dashing with the lance is advancing guard, hop/leaping thrust, (repeat indefintely). You can also use it to attack by back hop, advancing guard and immediately cancel into a leaping thrust and immediately cancel into another back hop, repeat.
I hope they bring back the clutch counter even if they don't bring back the clutch claw, since it doesn't require the clagger animation. They can rework the tenderize mechanic into whatever, but it feels SO good to pull off repeated perfect clutch counters on super aggro monsters.
Yeah countering some huge dive or headslam then go flying into the monsters hesd is too badass to not keep
The Leaping thrust - Backhop combo is good in Rise. Not World. World's Leaping Thrust does not do enough damage to justify it and it consumes 3 ticks of sharpness compared to Rise's just 1 tick. But, the Forward Guard Dash into Leaping Thrust chain is a really cool skill to have in world. Agreed.
@@MrPort I only recently mained lance. And actually the coolest thing I've discovered in MHW is that the 'advancing guard' is omnidirectional, despite the name. So it's actually been super cool to back jump/side jump with the shield still guarding after every leaping thrust.
I tried the lance once in a arena fight using the preset challenges. Had no idea what I was doing and still killed the monster and that baffled me. Now that I have the guard up gem after comming back after years of not playing I wanted to give it a shot. Already relearned my beloved charge blade and have been trying new weapons like the great axe now that some friends have started playing for the first time. Defensive but aggresive is my kind of weapon combo so Lance and charge blade are right up my alley. Thank you for explaining so well
The point of power guard is that after the shield flashes, it gives you guard up. At endgame where most players have access to a guard up jewel, this is meaningless. However if you don't have the jewel yet, it allows you to tank something like nergi dive or teostra supernova if you react to the windups in time, though you will still take some damage. Super useful if you're on a new character.
Honestly if you can see them coming this early it's easier to just sheath 😅
It's not the only point, the strong thrust you're able to do has some insane motion value and is much better than counter thrust after counter guard.
The strong thrust out of power guard is Lance's best wake up attack, and power guard is a quick way to block when you're mid combo. Sometimes an ally can proc your block counter and force you to attack when the monster hasn't hit yet, leaving you vulnerable. I most often fund myself using power guard as a last-second defense against Fatalis's downwards fire breath since it's a big multi hit attack. Normal block is more ideal, but power block is faster if I'm mid-combo or want to stay in that spot after the breath finishes for a strong counter thrust.
A tip that I don't see a lot of people mention is that, you do combos in sets of 3 but the timings for those sets is pretty generous. So if you are anticipating an attack, Poke - Poke - PAUSE - check for windup and if there is none - Final Poke or Counter/Block depending on the situation. I have not timed how long the window is but its around like .75-1seconds or so which is ample time to see if an attack is coming.
Mid Thrust, while doing lesser damage, will move your character forward quite a bit and High Thrust will do more damage and not move you as much. Use these moves in combination to reposition slightly during your attacks.
Guard Dash into Leaping Thrust is actually a very good gap closing combo as both move your character forward quite a bit. Its so good in fact, you can even catch up to limping monsters with it when you chain them. Hold down your Guard input (whatever input method of choice it is), light attack to guard dash and then heavy attack into Leaping Thrust in that order. Then, while guard is held down, keep repeating the light-heavy and you will do a sort of hop-skip kind of thing. It will take some practice but once its down, its a really cool combo to have. Bonus, it actually regenerates your stamina if you want to go into a Dash attack afterward. In Rise, this is actually a staple combo as Leaping Thrust has been buffed and it consumes only 1 tick of sharpness instead of World where it consumes 3 for the 3 attacks. Except there, you are supposed to do like a jump back-forward thing.
Your dodges are short hops because Lance is a heavy weapon. But your backhop is farther than your sidehops. Useful if you don't want to counter/block a multi hit attack like Zinogre's paw slams. Though if you ask me, countering them is easy enough and it makes you feel like an anime protagonist too.
Offensive Guard is a must have skill IMO. Its a free 15% attack increase when you counter an attack.

Power Guard take more chip damage than a normal guard, it's good for changing direction, and sometime for conserving stamina.
About Fatalis
Shield and Fatalis Fireball spam don't mix well, even with Guard 5, it still does heavy knockback, and massive chip damage, so Fatalis can just lock Lance in place if not careful.

One thing about the Counter Clutch I don't hear many mention is that you get a few seconds of knockdown and roar immunity after a successful counter and latch, allowing to you tenderize, flinch or reposition to one adjacent part to pull off the aforementioned before this immunity runs out (most times, depends on the monster), you still take damage if the monster does an attack with the part you're latched onto, so mantles and DB help.
You also cannot be cancelled out of the reel in animation unless its very specific monster attacks, like Rajang's Ult slam or Diablos' dig, you can take damage when reeling in though. Health Aug offsets most of that if it happens when you tenderize the part you're reeling into.
Clutch Lance is really fun, I pair it with Safe Landing for extra style points. The dopamine rush of having a monster charge the length of the arena and you just get that sick reel in that gradually accelerates right to them.. mmmm.
I first started with the Lance way back on 3U then made the jump to the Hunting Horn. After playing through most of the games, I decided to go back to the Lance after beating Iceborne with the Hunting Horn back on the PS4.
I'm currently playing the Lance on Steam, and there are times when it's frustrating, but I am enjoying so far on Iceborne.
GS Main here: I picked up lance after seeing a meme about it, I don’t even remember what the meme was but I remember it causing the thought “I should use that weapon”. And I must say, that it is one of the most fun and engaging weapons in the game.
I was thinking that I wanted to try Lance more since it's the weapon I'm not really using just bc I suck at it. So I think this helps a lot and from here on out it's just learning to adapt to the style of the weapon
Didn’t see this one coming but glad it’s here. Lance always seemed to appeal to me more than gunlance. I’ve seen a few times that some of its best tricks aren’t as effective against some endgame attacks but maybe that’s where the evade lance style is better?
Not sure what exactly your referring to, but there are some match ups that turn into absolute jokes with Evade lancing including Velkhana 😅
Also I personally found evade style lance to be the easiest way to break Glavenus's tail as you can just hop out of the way of his attacks and start poking the tip instantly
i recently watched a video about why no one uses lance in IB-SB and my fascination with the lance was rekindled. the way i see it, no one (meaning very few) uses lance not because it's weak or lame. but because everything else are leagues cooler than it. i main longsword in every game and i switch a lot, avoiding long-range and blunt weapons, also lance/GL but still i got worried about LS taking its throne as counter-king. but coming back to World and crafting my first Fatalis weapon (and its lance) it dawned on me that lance may not be the counter-king but it's the shield-king. it's the most comfortable i've been facing Fatalis and it could be the one that allows me to solo it
Finally getting to world endgame. Looking for Lance in all the right places. Blocking and countering feels so good.

When I first picked up the game I tried Lance and it was mid. Went straight to Longsword out reflex. Years later having played a few more titles you learn that the Lance is really easy mode and super fun 😂 poke, poke, poke and bounce - back in poke, poke etc. Would recommend to everyone 🤝🏼
What drew me here was MR Tempered Black Diablos. I'm trying to upgrade my Rocksteady mantle and I'm having a horrible time with my hammer and her constant burrowing. So I thought maybe, just maaaybe, it's time to give lance a shot. I've always been curious to try it but Swaxe and Hammer are my mains.
9:55 I agree, with the one exception that if you're too far and you block a fireball, there's the chance he'll do 2 more fireballs, which isn't the bad part but it leaves you with low stamina even on Guard 5. The bad part is that he can do another set of 3 fireballs, and there's not much escape by then: your sheathe animation is too long, power stance stamina drain does freeze when getting hit but the third fireball takes too long and the chip damage you've been taking is going to leave you set up for a kill generally.
But you can counter that by just making sure you never get caught like that: positioning yourself properly around the monster.
The other option you have is to do advancing guards. You still benefit from the full defense, you reduce the distance between you and Fatalis and advancing guard prevents knockback.

You can also hop to the side with the dash attack
Jumping attack out of the dash attack is basically a mount on demand in 99% of the situations
If you press direction out of the counter thrust you can go into mid thrust instead of a high one
Power guard also receives more chip damage, but stops the stamina drain for a short time after getting hit and can block multiple attacks unlike counter. You can basically sacrifice more health for stamina and save yourself from a broken guard with right timings
You can go into the power guard out of the failed counter by holding back and pressing B (not sure about the specific inputs, but it's a nice tech)
Guard dash is one of the most important things you should be using as a Lance player as far as I'm concerned it's offensive, defensive and is your best mobility option (especially if you ever wanna try Rise is absolutely broken there)
Should've really mentioned slinger burst, took me an embarrassing amount of time to realise how useful it is on the lance. Diablos and Black Diablos are jokes, poor Kulu can't even use rocky, flying monsters drop out of the sky, Lavasioth can as well shed his lava armor and don't even get me started on stagger on demand with crystal, dragon, thorn and piercing pods 😅
Really REALLY should talk more about Evade Lancing it is insanely safe even against some of the tougher match ups (it actually turned Velkhana into one of the easiest fights for me 😅)
Yes I personally would say Lance is not the best match against Fatalis, but only thing I can compare it to is my second main, which is greatsword aka the best match against Fatty
Also power guard allows to block and attack in 360, so if you're fighting smth fast or really big you can use power guard to block an attack from behind and then turn around instantly with a mighty blow

I started playing Lance when I decided to give this game a second try after almost giving up on it with Longsword lol. Starting it was a bit of a shock and I was wondering why something this heavy and clunky even exists 😂

My faves are lance and GS, but at this point I'm kinda staying away from lance just because most match ups are too easy with it at this point
I have been long sword player but now lance has become my fav, nothing can hit you if you master it, with best defence in the game, suprisingly it is very mobile weapon(it is main issue i have with gun lannce) guard dash in leanping thrust to cover short distance and dash charge to cover long.
Very precise and accurate attacks, you can target weak zones very easily. I think people avoid this weapon but they don't get guard skill early in the game, without that this weapon takes lot of chip damage i will advice to farm urgaaan set

Also, think Lance is super underrated. Only picked it up in the last couple months but it’s been super fun.

I think the only reason why people dont play the lance is because its not as flashy, BUT MAN, this weapon is built for people who just wants to brawl. so satisfying. I do wish that there was a charge version of Y and B to finish out the last combo. Like: B, B, Charge B, for a stronger upper stab would of been nice. In Rise, they added a charged Y+B which is nice, but the horizontal slice is situational - so it would of been nice to have a charge B version to hit monster's head who still standing but dazed
(New Lance User) As an agro hunter I just got tired of the trade off of hit, get hit, get up and hit back. So I said screw it I need a big shield and so lance it was. Plus the clutch claw attack is SICK. Sucks that they didn't incorporate it into RISE, hopefully we get to see a variant of it in WILDS.

I’m here because I play SnS and without any upgrades, I can block most things essentially for free. Sure, I get knocked back, but now I wanna see the power of a block that’s meant to be.
My brain has been on and off about lance, this may help me make up my mind ❤
I have played lance as my main weapon for about 1 year. I know that is insignificant compared to others, but I just need to put out here that lance does NOT have the strongest guard in the game. That would be a heavy bow gun with shield mod. It is also NOT the safest most unkillable weapon. That would be Mushroomancer SnS. And data collected from many speedruns also placed lance at last place in terms of time to kill.
Some attacks are downright unblockable and in most circumstances dodging is almost always safer. No chip damage from dodging.
I went into the lance thinking I could have a tanky play style like in other RPG. I had a terrible time. The sheath speed is slow and if I made 1 mistake, I could not heal in time. I basically had to depend on palico for heals. It wasn't until I got healing augments that the tanking dream got realised.
What I am getting at is this - perhaps we shouldn't tell beginners that lance is a defensive weapon. It is a weapon that encourages consistent damage dealing rather than a hit and run or obverse and react style of play.
Having said all that, I love the lance. It has a unique playstyle, different than most other weapons.
Now all I need a a charge blade guide 😅

Does focus speed up the charge for the dash? That would rock if it does. Being able to get that second or third charge quicker would be great
Not many people play the lance because on the surface it looks like it does low amounts of damage AND speedruns with it are slower.
For low damage people don't realise the amount of uptime this weapon has.
For slower speedruns - speedrunners STUDY all the moves the monster does, the timings, the positioning and PRACTICE it for dozens and dozens of times.
This means that even with a much less defensive weapon they have similar amounts of uptime on the monster that they can pull off due to RIGOROUS training, which 99.9% players will never have (and have no reason to have).
Speedruns are basically choreography.
Bottom line - Lance is a great brawler with high effective DPS outside of speedruns.
In hands of a more or less skilled player I think lance actually is the least demanding weapon to go through the game with

at the moment I only tried lance and just killed kirin and diablo where kirin took 3 attempts because the lightning nearly one shotted me and Diablo’s was on first attempts but was at some point pretty risky because of the location I fought it
I feel like the infinite combo with cancel thrust is the best when wanting to continue attacking the monster and maintaining damage

I just started world and have loving both lance and switch axe. I played rise when it first came out liked gunlance and insect glaive, but they aren't as fun in world w/o wire bugs imo. Gunlance with no blast dash feels worse than lance with dash to me b/c I like having a movement ability, but like defensive play.

I'm trying lance again after many fail fighting arena Zinogre with LS.
I soloed most of the game with a variety of builds, but mostly poison build. The uptime is amazing. Thats why I think that the endgame is one of the biggest flaws of this game. Everyone runs the same armor and the variety of builds just dissapear.
There are at least 14 different weapons, if you're going for variety, numerous of which have different builds on top of that - for example wide/long GL, elemental vs physical, statuses vs damage and more.
Imo the core of the weapon needs to be fun to execute while playing, while the "builds" are simple flavor.
