  • I finally tackle the infamous seat twist issue on my 2003 e39 M5!
If you're reading this you probably know all about the seat twist issue afflicting our beloved e39s. The cause is the plastic shroud around the drive cables connecting the motor to the adjustment transmission. The shrouding seems to expand and therefore lengthen over time. The steel flex shaft inside the shroud does not expand at the same rate, and eventually 'pulls' out of the motor.
This DIY will guide you through the steps to disassemble the seat base and access the cable ends. Once we access the cable ends we will remove them, shorten the shroud, and then reapply the ends to the shroud. From there we reassemble everything, and have a finished repair that will last for many years to come!
Note: Some other DIYs I've seen show heat applied to the plastic shrouds, shortcuts to access the drive cables, and segmenting the shrouds. I decided to document my process so that those of you who don't mind the extra time and effort can enjoy the satisfaction of an end result indistinguishable from how it left the factory floor.
    ATTENTION: AIRBAG/SRS WARNING
Before unplugging the seat harness from the vehicle harness, be sure to disconnect the vehicle battery to avoid activating the SRS light in the instrument cluster. The only way to turn the light off is to use a reset/coding tool.
I'll be doing more of these in the futures so make sure to subscribe!

A nice comprehensive video, thanks for taking the time. Only negative thing was that your camera work left me feeling a little Seasick.

@@recyclebmws2574 After removing the seats, the airbag warning lights came on. Even though I clear the faults with the obd device, the faults are not deleted. can you help me ?

@@necmettin. Sorry to hear that. First I would confirm that the tool you are using is capable of resetting SRS codes because not all OBD scanners can do it. You may need to use a tool that has BMW programming software on it (I use a Foxwell unit)
If you know you are using the correct tool but it still doesn't reset I would read the code to see what it says. You may have a loose connection on the seatbelt tensioner or another part of the harness.
      I hope that helps!

Thank you! We will be making more videos in the future, both for e39s and other BMWs as well. We are actually renovating our shop space and will have an area to double as a studio for some high quality content. Thanks for watching!

Is there a reference point where you count the teeth for the seat height and recline feature?

I didn't reference anything in particular, I just used what was visually easiest. Ultimately it doesn't have to be exact.

Great video, very well done! I have the exact same seat in my M5 but my electrical headrest does not work on the drivers side. All other buttons work just fine just the headrest doesnt. Do you know by any chance how this could be fixed? Or what I should check? Thanks in advance!

Thanks! First thing I would do is make sure the motor is operating by pressing the adjustment switch. You should be able to hear it either momentarily or continuously. If you can hear it then you may need to access the mechanism inside the seat. Here is a detailed description of the process: tinyurl.com/bdzxxass
