Good to see project Rottweil again! I myself have an E39 touring with the M54B30 paired to a 5MT. Unfortunately, I found out that one of the previous owners had overheated the engine and the head gasket blew on me big time. I fixed it and resurfaced the head, but made a STUPID mistake installing an aftermarket fan shroud and coolant reservoir. The new shroud, new reservoir and stock coolant pipes wouldn't really fit into each other. I couldn't get the C clip seated on both sides on one of the coolant pipes. Not my brightest moment to call that fine. 800km after the fix, I hit a big bump on the road, which had disconnected that hose. I didn't get a low coolant level light as I have quite the electrical problems, but I managed to shutoff the engine within 10 seconds of the temp needle starting to rise. After that the head gasket blew on me again. Due to an upcoming Dutch "TUV" inspection, I have to temporarily write the car off the road. But I do believe that M54 engines are solid engines. My cylinder bores looked really good for 350k on the odo and she still had good torque (for the 800km in between disasters). It is such a shame that KNOWN cooling problems can end an M54. I am going rebuild the engine and resurface the block as well this time (as you should with aluminium blocks).

You are an invaluable asset to enthusiasts of classic BMW automobiles. Your new releases are always highly anticipated and bring immense joy to our community.
I don't own a BMW but I moved by your DIY passion that I started doing things on my own to my car. Changing engine oil, transmission fluid, transmission filter, and other simple fix it is easier than most people expect. Also makes you 'connect' better with your car, knowing you service it well and it performs as well as you maintain them.
I drove my 2003 Z4 3.0 with the M54 and 6-speed manual just an hour ago here in Germany😁. I am running a DS Motorsports tune and exhaust. I will never sell it!
Just when I thought after I saw you rebuild a dash board, then change all manual windows to electric then rebuild an Alpine engine i had seen the summum of patience, you go and do this. I am in awe. Respect.
One conversion that a lot of people want to do to their cars but are unable to due to different circumstances (lack of a manual that can fit easily, lack of skill, lack of money, etc). Your videos get better with each episode. Excellent work on the car and on the content. Respect :)
Once again, the TH-cam video quality bar keeps getting higher. These videos pushed me to get a lift in my garage. I never considered the lead time lol. In a month I’ll have the ability to wrench for real. Thanks again. Never stop the torque wrench clicks. It’s like a drug I need it
Ones again a phenomenal project and something many have dreamed of. I remember the E38 750IL manual transmission from the movie transporter and always thought, that's the way to go. A remark for your OE(M) look, radiators and air-conditioning from factory are mostly painted black. With all your effort to "hide" your work, the unpainted radiators stand out. See you in the next video. ~M.
Thank you! I've never seen an original BMW radiator painted black, all are unpainted aluminum, but some A/C condensers are painted black. That said, not sure how it relates to anything in this video. :)
@@M539Restorations You might be right it is mostly the condensers. With the vehicles I've worked on (also other brands) this ionized / painted black was a tell tale if a vehicle had been worked on / had been in a frontal impact and has been repaired. It has nothing to do with this video, but I just wanted to trigger you and I'm glad that I have. Especially older vehicles (like the 850) seem to have black cooling components. Don't discard the old R12 condenser too quickly as they might have greater cooling capacity than the new units and can be made to work with the r134a. Thank you ones again. Because of you I might finally buy a siebener v12. ~M.

I am glad they have them now...Thankfully he was quick on the brake.
Your Airplane reference is funnier than your Spanish speaking. You have NO IDEA how many times I’ve rewatched your videos and recorded the torque values in my notes for my projects!
It's interesting to see him share his struggles while removing components - normally don't see that detail in this category. Makes the rest of us feel less stupid. He's an amazing mechanic!

Please dont install a Mahle thermostat, I had 3 and they were all stuck open. My friend had to swap out two and then he got a Wahler. I advise you to buy an original part, which is like 40€ more compared to the Mahle and Wahler units. The difference between the original one and aftermarket one is clearly visible. You can find quite alot of info online about Mahle thermostats being absolute junk and alot of people experienced them stuck open from the box.
Depends in which market thermostats are bought. Weird I know. Some are "good", seen that myself. If prices are somewhat less than what they should be, it's probably a thermostat made for "cheaper" markets. There have been plenty of instances identical to yours - broken thermostats right out of the box, all from Mahle.

Probably my favorite project car on the channel. Just a tip for around 9:24 with pullers, smacking the puller bolt on the head with a large hammer when it is under tension will often give it the needed final shock to loosen the parts. Also a bit of lubricant on the puller threads would help out. That said, I am really impressed with your overall attention to detail and determination on these projects!

These videos are entirely entertaining as well as huge teaching moments of proper mechanical processes. Every video from Sreten is a learning moment for all interested in car mechanics and electrical workings. As a BMW guy, I especially love them and remain watching every part and re-watching many sections. Thanks, Sreten! :)
Your attention to detail and doing things the right way and properly is always satisfactory to watch in all your video uploads. Outstanding knowledge and it goes to show that you do thorough research before taking such JOBS head ON. Thumbs up Streten and we appreciate you sharing your knowledge 👍 😀
I love the clutch & brake rubber pedal covers.. they used the exact same ones from at least the early '70s (not sure how much further back than that they might go?) thru the end of the F-chassis cars - the '21 F87 M2 Comp being the last to get them. That's one helluva run and makes them an iconic item!
Sreten your talent and personality are special.. keep putting smiles on the planet your a treasure... I was thinking today watching the e39 touring video with motor breakdown, that wholesale parts alone were probably $7500 to 10,000 euros... thanks for what you do Drew

Great video! Remember PTFE seals go in dry and you have to wait 3-6 hours for it to shrink, but you can use e36 m3 3.2 rear main seal on m54 it's normal with the spring inside and no waiting time. Keep up the perfection!
You've created a dream. Impressed af. People who dont know stick shift fun are missing a real driving experience. Love the vid!
ZHP illuminated shift knob is one of the best interior factory options of the period. When I was a kid, I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
I enjoy daily driving of manual e39 for more than 7 years. Every single ride is full of joy!
I've done 2 Manual Swaps on my E39 528 and E60 M5, but Sreten's level of precision and attention to detail is something else!
Sreten getting off the floor, such elegance, such grace, such power.
Sreten your talent and personality are special.. keep putting smiles on the planet your a treasure... I was thinking today watching the e39 touring video with motor breakdown, that wholesale parts alone were probably $7500 to 10,000 euros... thanks for what you do Drew
Man I thought about swapping a zf manual transmission into my 330i e90 for years and ended up with selling the car and buying f30 330i with 6spd manual . I'm not doubting that I can do it but I need a lift and a proper space . You make it look so damn easy and straight forward. I think you're one of the greatest bmw mechanics of all the time . Love your videos and absolutely helped me and others to work on their bmw the brand we all love . Thank you so much .
Brilliant that they designed the sandwich plate to be able to go in after you forget about it, never seen that before!
I am not that big of a fan of BMW, but ai am a huge fan of the channel. Gold content. International treasure 😊
You madman, Sir!. That`s a waaaay better machine than the forgotten BMW Wagon that was slowly decaying on the lot. Congratulations for the swap, makes me want to wrench on something again 🙂
You have to admit, this is a pretty mint E39 inside and out! Great job as always Sreten!
Loved this video, and you so perfectly put into words the connection to a car a manual transmission gives you as a driver. I continue to be impressed with the jobs you will tackle. Can't wait for the next video, Sreten.
Well that is BRILLIANT! without any manufacturer arrogance or condescension, and that is the most detailed and user friendly manual for this gearbox replacement ever made! You can watch it for pleasure or use during works, damn is like a companion in the workshop!
E X C E L E N T !
I wish you put a live feed in the shop i could watch you forever man you’re great
Little creepy
Having done a manual swap on my E39 525i around 10 years ago I watched your steps very closely. The way you did it is just perfect and there is nothing more to say.
I am so impressed with the amount of research you have done to make this swap happen with all the mix and match parts. Thank you for another entertaining video.
Replacing the rubber on the pedals rather than just washing them is next level dedication!
What a mammoth project just reaching and collecting all the parts let alone fitting them. Well done, great job but I don’t think many will have your sense of mission to be following in your footsteps. 👏👍
You know it's going to be a good day when an M539 video is released! Great work as always.
Great. Something to watch, when i come home from work.
43:40 thats just beauty. Well worth all the work!! Go mutzi
That Ninja flip was ultra smooth! I didnt know that you are full time Ninja and part time BMW mechanic.
This is a crazy amount of documentation for a more complicated swap like this. Even for this channel this is a cut above
Sreten, Greetings from Bosnia. You are THE BEST BMW technician ever, because you love what you do. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
