Excellent video, thank you for discussing a large selection of options. I see so many variables to think about when I get randomly approached, while detecting, of what to suggest to a new user.
Great video! I started metal detecting last april and went with the xtp. It's been a great detector but now I'm wanting to upgrade to something else. Hooked on it. Been looking at the nox 700 and 900. Just have a feeling I'm leaving stuff behind with the xtp.
@darinblackburn6023 i assume you mean XP Deus 2 when you say xpt. If that's the case, you're not going to gain much by going to the Equinox 700 or 900. I'd stuck with the D2, the more you use it the more you'll become an expert with it
******* That was one of the most informative and thorough videos that I have seen for new hunters. Well done! A little bit of critique though :) 1) It should be noted to newbies that detectors costing 2x and 3x the price, does not mean 2x and 3x better finds. Take for example the Manticore and Deus II compared to the Elite Pro and Triple Score. Those latter detectors, will find the vast majority of the same targets that the much more expensive detectors find. 2) I'm somewhat surprised that you included the Vortex. I also noticed that you received the Vortex update before it was released to the public. Do you have any association with Garrett? Regardless, with wonky IDs, missing IDs, bundled IDs, poor value for the dollar compared to the competition, and a laughably bad notch system, I don't think newbies would be happy with it once they found out about those things.
@DIGA-m7q Thanks for the comments. 1-You are right. Spending 2 to 3 times the money doesn't necessarily mean more or better finds. But these higher priced detectors do offer features that the lower priced ones don't. An example is gold prospecting modes for those that gold prospect. Another is the 2D target trace feature on the Manticore. Since I have or have used most every brand and model currently available, I definitely see a difference in the more expensive machines. Both in performance and functionality. 2- I bought the Garrett Vortex and have no association with Garrett concerning the Vortex. I also didn't get the update before it was available to the public. The Vortex is a capable metal detector, and honestly, the average person isn't going to notice the issues that us more advanced users would. I'm sure Garrett will get things worked out with future updates just like Nokta did with the Legend.
@@RelicsRingsnewbies will notice the notch system, that's a basic feature, the other stuff I can look pass, but I don't know why they didn't make a normal notch system before release But some people don't use notch at all, I don't think I've ever used notch, on the deus machines I do use discrimination and the legend I'll tweak the tone break
@@RelicsRings 1) Aside from gold prospecting, the performance difference between the detectors I mentioned is rather minimal in the context we are discussing. Agreed on TT, but only for helping to identifying iron, in a similar way that the D2 and Legend's ferrous and nonferrous meter do so. For all the targets that aren't collocated, TT is less accurate than ID. 2) I'm sure most new Vortex users will find out its problems soon enough. In addition, Garrett already tried fixing the ID issues. Furthermore, it's very unlikely they can do anything about the grouped IDs, missing IDs, and especially the notching, unless they do a recall and redesign it. Regardless though, for the reasons I mentioned, it's not a worthy detector to recommend to newbies. The only actual "defect" with the Legend when it was released, was too much falsing in some salt conditions, which Nokta immediately fixed. The other updates were for adding additional features (free) and user requests. Given the issues with the Vortex, it's misleading to compare its release defects to the Legend's release.
@@digginggopher I don't think the Vortex even has tone breaks, and notching is often used when hunting trashy park like sites by notching in nickels, higher conductors, and possibly the two highest IDs to disc out iron wrap around. One thing they won't notice though, is the Vortex's poor iron unmasking performance compared to the competition. They won't even know what they're missing.
@DIGA-m7q Thanks for your opinion. I'm not going to try and defend the Vortex, as I agree with what you have said. If you've watched my other videos comparing the Vortex to less expensive machines, it's pretty obvious it has issues. On the other hand, I don't feel like including it as an option was a mistake. The Vortex will find coins, relics and jewelry just like any other metal detector and is fairly simple to use. Yea, it's overpriced for what you get, and personally, it wouldn't be my first choice.
Spend once, spend wisely. A good second hand detector is probably the best bet as if you don't take to the hobby you can resell and get your money back, or find a detector more suited.
I just ordered a Minelab X-Terra Elite Expedition package which comes with 2 coils, wireless headphones and is multi-frequency. $599 out the door! I thought this would ring all the bells for an entry level or midrange detector. Decent reviews so far but it just came out in June of 2024.
New to the hobby , please do research and choose wisely !!! The type of hunting you do , determines the type of detector you need !!! Save some cash for tools , gloves , pouches and the like !!! Price $$$ can be deceiving !! Some manufactures promote and overprice sub par detectors , Garrett Vortex and there snake oil salesman is just one example !! Thanks for the video R & R !!!
Im conflicted on what advice i give new users, i started with the simplex plus, and within months i wanted a more advance machine and got the legend, i could have saved a few hundred never buying the simplex plus Then again, if i didnt stick with metal detecting and vought the legend right off the bat, that would have been a lot of money to give up on something And also if you are just going to do park detecting the machine i would reccomend is different if you were going to search a salt water beach Bacically i say if youre going to hunt a beach go with a multifrequency except the vanquish since its not water proof, and if its in your budget get the legend or equinox so you have single frequency options, i dont generally recommend deus 2 or manticore for a first machine If you are just going to hunt parks and go no where near the salt water, i also reccomend legend or equinox if its in your price range, but if its not, you only have a few hundred to spend, ill reccomend the findx pro to test to see if you even like detecting, and if you do save up for a better machine The xterra pro and xterra elite can also be good options, the pro being a budget detector and the elite being a more advanced detector at a decent price point that has multi iq
@digginggopher Thanks for your comments. The video was meant to help both new users and those who want to move up to a better detector. Opinions from users like yourself will be useful for those who read the comments.
Just started my own channel and having a blast with it. Well done and keep up the good work, be safe.

@RelicsRings actually i meant x terra pro
@darinblackburn6023 got it. Actually, you would see some improvements over the Pro with both the 700 and 900.
