EVs are too tethered. A horse had to stop to rest and eat, when the Model T came along rural farmers could come to town whenever they wanted. Horses had to be left at a livery stable - a hitching post was short-term , a livery station is like a charging station. The average person couldn't afford a horse, they walked or took an urban street car. A wealthy home owner had a carriage house and a hay dealer delivered hay for the horses - very costly. Look at the narrow 1920 garages - built for a Model T - not a horse. The bicycle was expensive at first but it offered freedom to go places. Bikes weren't originally for kids - too costly. A bike can be good local alternative to an EV. A folding bike can be carried inside a commuter bus and placed beside an office worker's desk so it can't be stolen. An e-bike can have 30 mile range but an office might prohibit batteries inside

There is no cooling. There was never a large market in the first place. And with the possible new administration saying, "drill baby drill", the market will drop to beat zero along with all infrastructure required. Hybrid technology is currently the best alternative. We have already gone thru this phase of biofuels, two decades ago. Growing fuels doesn't work, it takes more energy to grow fuel than energy the grown fuel produces. For example, 10units of energy was used to produce 8units of energy. The reason why it was even workable to begin with is subsidies. All the eco folks that were doing biodiesel then have all abandoned that and moved over to EVs. EVs is still the future but is still currently limited with batteries. Once battery gets better is when EVs will be come mainstream.

@@DaBinChe "moved over to EVs" while clearly everyone is moving away from EVs because it's not the future or sustainable. There is an insanely limited amount of materials for batteries, even just Lithium if you ignore the rest, and less than 5% of Lithium batteries are recycled world wide. If we keep the 5%, then we have maybe 2 decades of Lithium. If we recycle all of it, then we have until the 2090s, but we will run through the world wide supply by the end of the century because materials can only be reused so many times before its life is used. EVs are a temporary future, which is why I did say "maybe in the future we'll move to hydrogen." Who says we will be stuck on Lithium forever??? As I said batteries are limited now and that is the hold up to wide EV adoption, once batteries tech gets better it'll be EV all the way. Same thing was said with the horse less carriage when it first came out, most folks at the time did not see it replacing horses, look at us now. You have the same mentality as those folks about their horses. The ICE took time to develop so will batteries for EVs. Speaking of limited resources, there is also a limited amount of oil so we have to move away from it sooner or later. Hydrogen just like biofuel requires more energy to produce than energy it generates. Oil works cause it generates more energy than it takes to produce. One reason why battery EVs are so good is that it is 90+% efficient compared to ICE only being 30ish% efficient. There is minimal lost thru heat with battery EVs unlike ICE where most of the energy is lost as heat. To be able to be sustainable we need better efficiency and this is where EVs come in.

I've been through two disruptions in different markets - and what we see in automotive is typical for disruptions: the new tech doesn't reach the expected sales/profits resulting in uncertainties, some manufacturers falling back to the old tech with investments to hybrids and ICEs. Meanwhile, an increasing number of large cities will curb ICE&hybrids from entering the cities limits or centers to protect people from toxic fumes. Last one joining is Stockholm. Who will buy a vehicle which won't be allowed driving where you want to go? For Europe, I predict a 70-80% share of EVs with new registrations in 2030, despite all the hesitation by the manufacturers.

Look I'm not an EV fan boy, but the reason the huge losses are happening with EVs is simple.
Developing an entirely new propulsion system and platform requires huge investments. To recoup that you need to spread it out over as many vehicles as you can. Ford didn't do that. GM has been way too slow rolling out Ultium. Then we had an artificial price spikes during COVID. Those EVs that came out then were way overpriced but their true value remains way less. Why wasn't Hyundai Kia mentioned in this piece? Because they created a platform to be used across several models and instead of one car on its unique platform, you 5 or 6. Economies of scale. I hate Musk as much as the next guy but the fact is Tesla sells more vehicles than Mercedes and BMW combined. This is no different than when Ford and GM tried to go diesel in the 80s. They hype it up, there's initially interest, it dies down but there remains a solid albeit smaller market for the unique powertrain. We are car guys, there is no plot afoot. The ZR1 has 1000 HP V8. The Mustang has a 500HP V8. BEVs are great for a specific market. If that's not you buy what you want.

A lot of issues with BEV is the limitations created by batteries (cost, weight, charging time and by corollary to that design to get range due to cost, weight and charging time).
Toyota/Lexus strategy/prediction is predicated on that having a change due to solid state batteries reaching vehicles.
I think it's right if they were right about the arrival of such a tech however historical this sort of disruption, while inevitable, takes much longer to materialize (think LEDs: blue LED were discovered in the mid 1990's, OLED in the late 1990's but widespread adoption of LED backlighting not until a decade later, similar with signal lights, OLED displays only in the last 5 years, we are still going through the transition to LED lighting. So wha should have taken 5 years in paper took about 25. Expect something similar with SSB.

I don’t drive an EV to save money on fuel. My insurance rates are the same for a comparably priced ice vehicle. I drive an EV because I like driving a quiet car with instant torque. I like driving an EV so I wake up to a full “tank” every morning. I like not having to stand in kitty litter because someone overfilled their tank. I like not having my hands smell like gasoline. I like not having to worry about my credit card getting skimmed. I like not having to go inside to get my receipt when the “see cashier for receipt” pops up on the screen. EV’s are not for everyone. We take my wife’s ice vehicle if we are going somewhere that would require me to DC fast-charge more than twice. If you want to drive a diesel F-250, with dual exhaust stacks coming up through the bed, while riding on a 12” lift, enjoy it. Some people drive an EV simply because they like to.

I think what happens is that CEOs want to keep their stock values high. These EV claims were probably first made when EVs were in fashion. But I don't think the CEOs ever intended to do it. The first chance they get to announce they are backtracking, and their stock won't go down, they do it. But they never were in the first place. The real problem for these companies is that China can make EVs. And they can take over a lot of countries with cheap EVs. In my opinion, Toyota and others should get serious about EVs since they won't be able to hide behind tariff walls in Europe and the U.S. forever. They are already feeling the sting from EVs in other places. The worst thing they can do is to build a gas, hybrid, and BEV option, since putting batteries in an ICE car will not compete against China who are building from the ground up EVs.

New tech always has hiccups, but auto sales have been down across the board, so why focus on one segment? Anyway, EVs have gotten progressively better, and will continue to do so. You can't say that about ICE, the tech is too mature to do much more, and hibrids are more ICE than EV. I remember people saying that they would NEVER buy a cell phone, then they would NEVER buy a smart phone. Yeah.... right. What is going on now, is mainly that serious EV manufacturer wannabes are starting to see what they will have to compete with (much of which is now made in China) and so they are re-tooling to be able to do so. They have not "given up" on EVs at all.

Well I do agree that the electric vehicle infrastructure and current offerings does need to upgrade in quality and come down in price, I find it hard to believe that it's all entirely costs related when I'm seeing people willing to plop down $80,000 on a brand new diesel pickup truck, or 40 to 50 Grand on a brand new Challenger or charger. What that tells me is that a lot of people don't give two shits about the repercussions of their actions, and don't take the global warming situation seriously..... Until it affects them personally, in which then they'll blame it on the government for "not warning them enough". In short, the consumer wants to have its cake and fuck it too. And in the event any consequences come up in the end, they want to run and cry and play victim, while demanding that someone else do something to fix the situation in an unrealistic way after it's already weird its ugly head.
