I could never run a gimble that requires your hands on each side to hold it. Hands up and down plus the ability to bring it in close to your chest is a must for me. Great review and feeling you pain!
Cheers Dylan! Yeah, I first had an issue when I was around 24 then my first slipped disc when i was 30 then 3 when I was 45. I was really first for the first two as well! Bloody Betacams!
When I look at my current camera bag, it's with a zero-regret feeling that I think about my former reporter shoulder bag... 2 camera bodies + 5 lenses (wide to tele-zoom) + 2 flashes (including one side-mounted high-power) + 1 motor + 5 or 6 dozens of film-rolls + filters, converters, batteries aplenty, etc. Everytime I would turn back, the immediate "helicopter effect" would remind me about the 8 kilos of gear and the subsequent inertia. And my back happened to be fully aware of it too ! And I used to go for 3 weeks of report and travel photography, by train, with it and a front back-pack and a large suitcase. Were we into suffering or what...? 😈
Very good review, I laughed a lot. Sorry to hear about the back issues. I'm having to go to pysio regularly because of shoulder issues from filming (which turn into epic headaches), so having to be a lot more careful how i film now.
By far the best review out there. .. Your videos are on another level, movie like.. Also, your experience and technical know-how is obvious from 0:01.... Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you Philip for once again putting out a video with exceptional detail, creativity and authenticity. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into your content. Also, I feel your back pain. I destroyed mine as an AC hauling massive Panaflex gear on and off camera truck tailgates. There's a reason they called the 3:1 zoom "The Antichrist"... It destroyed many an ACs spine before even getting to the mental focus side of things (for some reason it was always that lens they insisted on using at 120fps capturing stunt people diving from explosions!)
Almost nothing that you review is something I can afford or justify buying. But I very much enjoy your cinematic in depth look at what is possible for future filmmakers. Thank you for all your hard work.
There's something about this that reminds me of a grown up IDOLCAM !!! But seriously, I can't help thinking mounting a wearable Z-arm to an RS2 would be an easier to use solution... especially with something like a Sony A1 on the front.
I have watched several reviews on this camera, and as usual, no one does a review with the elegance of Mr. Philip Bloom. I like the ability to recognize the innovative but point out the reality of what the innovation currently affords. In my opinion, this is one of the most exciting cameras that I personally have no interest in using. It is exciting to see where DJI is going with it. Its good for the future of camera gear. As always thanks for the brilliant review Mr. Bloom.
I've seen a lot of comments like this under almost every video of the Ronin 4d : "Exciting Camera I won't buy!" It really makes me worried about the future of the product.
Thanks for the hard work Philip! Enjoyable and such beautiful footage. You did a great job of persuading me to make the most of my RS2/C70 set up, and not get greedy for this monster. It’s just not enough to justify switching. Hope your back and wrist get some rest and heal up as well as can be expected.
My first thought when you mentioned the weight in the intro was whether you'd try it with a vest or similar, so the fact that you closed with that was just perfect. While it's not something I'd ever look to own, it's a great first crack at a very unique product for DJI. Very keen to see what they come up with in this space in the future.
It was the perfect way to end the video. The irony was I’ve had the readyrig for about 8 years but I didn’t think it could work with this. When the embargo was lifted I was able to contact them and they told me how to do it.
@@philipbloom Fantastic. Glad it worked out. I couldn't imagine carrying that thing around as intended by DJI and I'm a couple decades younger than yourself with no back injuries... I do wonder if this would work well with a Steadicam style setup. Could work as a poor-man's (Relatively speaking) Arri Trinity.
@@GonePh1shing I agree. And it's $20k all decked out. Still, the color looks great and solving the Z axis is a huge deal. But...there are other, cheaper ways to get this. The Tilta Float and other Steadicam clones can do this under $1k (minus the camera you already have). But, this is innovative as hell, and will find a place in filmmaking.
The only Ronin 4D review that matters, just like I'd predicted. Forever inspiring! Also, I recently mildly injured my neck thanks to a heavy filming rig where I was literally holding it the same way as one holds the 4D. So, as impressed as I am with DJI, I'd always recommend an easy rig or an alternative that is safer on the body & capable enough to match the needs of the production.
Great video, as always. It sucks to hear about your back. I decided to become a cinematographer when I watched 'Sofia's People' 12 years ago (best decision of my life, after marry my wife, of course) and I'm not getting younger. Hope you the best, Philip!
Excellent review as always! And I so feel you with the back issues, I've had a slipped disc because of the cameras I have been lugging around and it's definitely no joke, till this day I get it reoccurring from time to time whenever I push myself too far!😅
I usually watch reviews of camera gear at 1.5x speed and only go to normal speed for gimbal and slomo shots. But with your reviews I grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the whole thing at regular speed, as it is like watching a short movie with all the information I need plus lovely footage to look at. Thank you!
This might be the most realistic, informative, and down-to-earth reviews of it I've seen so far. Good to see someone providing a more comprehensive look at it and its shortcomings than just fawning over it for 10 minutes.
You being one of the later reviews is a special treat that I don’t think can be understated.

Packed with information with beautiful visuals. Thanks for the upload Philip. Considering purchasing this. The weight is slightly an issue, BUT, I really hate setting up a gimbal. And yes, I $8000 hate setting up gimbals. 😂
@@ShawnShaman I have a buch of gear I am not going to part with. Yes, no balancing needed, be great, but I am just looking for a Tilta Float or Glide Cam to hang my gimbal from.
Incredible review as always, @Philip. Very very useful for me to get rid of that initial "youtuber hype" and "me wantieeee" thoughts and think of the practical stuff for me as a camera op... So eg the wireless tech is brilliant for the way we've been shooting in covid times, but your comments on the weight/cumbersome shape is helpful as I'm your age and have knackered elbows and shoulder from gimbal opping lol 😆 Thanks dude! Xx
@@MrMansionIV I have used one on a previous project but it was owned by another cam op and you're right they are great - maybe I should get one of my own before getting something like this camera lol
@@moobit I'm about to get my own, have been shooting with rentals the past year and noticed a lot less back pain / fatigue at the end of the day. Probably a much better ROI and longevity than this camera ;-)
@@MrMansionIV that's a damn good call my friend! :) It's hard though isn't it? Like... I do this job because I love the tech and the hardware side of it all - so I'd sooner buy a lens or a camera body or something for the outlay of an easyrig/similar... but then one must re-train your brain when you get past 40yrs old to look after your body better (so your easyrig is a MUCH more wise investment!) - because otherwise I'll be out of work quicker, lol! Good luck with yours Mr.IV ;)
Fantastic, well-thought, detailed, beautifully filmed, and elegant, as always. Your reviews are what TH-cam should be for. I would love to see you get your hands on the Nikon Z9 which seems a promising camera for stills and video.
As always, AMAZING video Phillip. Thank you so much for the love and dedication you put into your craft. You are and forever will be my favorite filmmaker.
What you're saying about weight makes sense, I'm... older and shoot weddings with a gimbal. I keep the camera very close to my body which is great ergonomically for all day shooting but the 4D is held a looooong way out in front.
2022 may be the year of the Z axis. Hopefully this will spark some competition from other manufacturers. I would love to see the gimbal manufacturers respond with some Z axis solutions. It would be great to see the walking bounce go away from gimbal shots. Once you start noticing it, it's hard to unsee it in gimbal footage.
Larger scale production have used bigger rigs to get rid of that for years weather in was the “anti gravity rigs” for movi gimbals or ronin 1 and 2’s (used on A star is born for a shot that’s impossible to out as a gimbal) Then there’s the armor man rig from Tilta used extensively with a ronin 2 on enterals. (Though the best demtrastion was a long take in nomad land) Then A maxima was used with i believe an armorman or brand of arm rig was used for the long shot battle prep scene in “the long night: episode of game of thrones (season 8 episode 3, the rig is mentioned in the ASC magazine article.) Additionally 1917 and The suicide squad both had scenes using custom built small gimbals (1917 for a Alexa mini LF with signature primes, and TSS with red monstros 8k. weapons using Leica [leitz] m.o8 lenses) These are just a few examples of films that used gimbals with invisible or almost invisible z axis movement. A cheaper solution that love for low budget or small rigs is a ronin s2 with the steadimate system from tiffin. $1000 for gimbal from ronin and a $1000 for the vest, arm, adapter bundle form tiffin. You are more locked into a Steadicam style of movement but with practice you can mimic an arri trinity for the most part. (Other gimbal type moves, like tight jib shots and orbits I have found to be easy with one or two hands, slow tracking shots are where I have a hard time, and the steadimate has helped wit h that for me) However if can manage the cost or lens limitations the 4d seems really good for people who hate gak on their rigs.
100%. I will tell you I am not too bothered by handheld footage when appropriate. A foot chase scene, the jerky footage lends urgency and tension to the scene. Somehow floating through a scene like that wouldn't be as exciting. Thanks for your long post. I've been looking at a flycam system with the redking for a sub-$1k rig. Why don't you do a video on what you like and don't like in these types of rigs?? I'd like to watch it.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 if I have time I may just work on one! Thanks for the idea! I also think handheld can be really great, for so many types of scenes. I think too often people think hand held is just shaky cam but it really is a gradient. The best way I heard it communicated comes from the DP Rachel Morrison. She uses a 1-10 system where 10 is super shaky and 1 is almost completely stagnant. Flycams are really I would own one however for my workflow like the ronin rs2 because I like to use the adapters to stick it on a my compact jib, or my tripod. Where as flycams are more like traditional steadicam in time needed to change over.
As the store manager for one of Scandinavia's biggest camera stores i always recommend my staff to watch your videos for the knowledge on video and cameras. Good job as usual
I will never buy one, and got about half of what you were going on about, but I watched all the way through as I came for the Kitties; you never disappoint. I do sympathize with you, I have a compressed 8th vertebra (lost an inch of height in the process), great advice though, "avoid the back injury in the first place" and the knee injury and the eye injury and the ........
I share your Betacam-induced back problems. Weight out front when hand holding is a big problem with this design. Thanks for your informed, thoughtful content and gorgeous productions.
Cats. It's the cats that make all the difference. It was obvious from the very first video from Philip... now we know : he managed to trick us into watching his reviews by embedding cats as they were on par with gear specifications. Well done Mister Bloom, well done !
Right with you on the body falling apart! I'm 63 this year. I just had a complete rotator cuff done in June on my dominate right side. Did 10 push-ups the other day!
As a one man band videographer, I feel you pain. The 4D looks great and the Lidar tech is something I want to see in smaller cameras, but carrying that weight around on a 9 hour shoot sounds like a nightmare! Great review!
I think a non gimbled version of this with a 15-20m LIDAR system would be more ergonomic and more popular. So much of the bulk of this machine seems to be supporting the Z axis, to my mind and possibly your back, more effort than its worth. The 35mm .95 was so much better than i imagined also thank you for the beautiful video
TBH i think if they could sell the LIDAR & focus as a standalone system it would sell really well. It would make regular focusing more accurate and autofocus on something as crazy as an alexa 65 would be possible!
The Ronin 3D Focus does exist. It only works with the RS2 and RSC2 right now, as far as I'm aware, and it only does autofocus - the main hurdle of bringing the LiDAR "waveform" system would be that whatever's showing it needs to be running an OS or app from DJI....but it'd be possible to do within their app fairly easily, I imagine. Though I wonder if they'll keep that feature for this to try to sell more of these.
Almost a camera revolution? No, this pretty much changes everything. Just imagine what's coming out in 2 years, 3 years and more? Only intentional suppression would stop this camera & moment from ushering in a camera revolution, like the Canon 5D did at one time. As always, nice video & I did enjoy. Thanks for putting it out.
After years of having M2, DVCAM, XDCAM heavy cameras I also suffer back problems so I really understand what Philip is talking about right at the end. Keeping your weight down and looking carefully after your back is good advice!
yess! the review ive been waiting for, lets see if anyone is dumb enough to question your wisdom in these comments like in the Corridor Crew comments. That made me laugh "this guy obviously has no idea who Philip Bloom is". thx for doing the deep dive (as always), PB. It's always great to get the working cinematographer's naked truth. And I feel your pain somewhat, 28 years of shooting and lugging gear has taken its toll on me a bit.
Brilliant review man. Hope you continue on the mend & get some relief soon. Wishing you a speedy recovery Philip.
Very good review, I laughed a lot. Sorry to hear about the back issues. I'm having to go to pysio regularly because of shoulder issues from filming (which turn into epic headaches), so having to be a lot more careful how i film now.
Our damned bodies!!!
By far the best review out there. .. Your videos are on another level, movie like.. Also, your experience and technical know-how is obvious from 0:01.... Bravo
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you :)
Thanks Neil...stupid big cameras!!
Oh baby! Been waiting for this review since the camera released! Magnificent work as always!
Almost nothing that you review is something I can afford or justify buying. But I very much enjoy your cinematic in depth look at what is possible for future filmmakers. Thank you for all your hard work.
By far the best review for this device on YT. Honest and informative. Thx for putting the work in.
There's something about this that reminds me of a grown up IDOLCAM !!! But seriously, I can't help thinking mounting a wearable Z-arm to an RS2 would be an easier to use solution... especially with something like a Sony A1 on the front.
It's wild to think I've been watching your films and reviews now for over 10 years, Philip. Always good to see them show up in the feed!
Thanks Ryan!
Bloom.
I've seen a lot of comments like this under almost every video of the Ronin 4d : "Exciting Camera I won't buy!"
It really makes me worried about the future of the product.
@@GonePh1shing Even at 20, carrying something away from your body is not... pleasant.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 This is true. The complete lack of ergonomic consideration here is baffling.
Great review mate. One of the best ones I had seen for this camera
I concur, but the Easy Rig looks totally stupid.
Readyrig less so!
Amazing video as expected from you. I feel sorry of your back injury and I hope you fully recover soon.
A refreshing in-depth review that isn't "boys with their new toys" that everyone else is doing. Thank you!
The amount of effort you put into your reviews--the quality! 'Old man', you do well. Hope you're back feels better.
Great video, as always.
It sucks to hear about your back. I decided to become a cinematographer when I watched 'Sofia's People' 12 years ago (best decision of my life, after marry my wife, of course) and I'm not getting younger.
Hope you the best, Philip!
Your reviews makes me fall in love with film all over again man. Amazing. I hear you on those back issues!
I got pretty much the same back injury, try a book called the mckenzie method, it change my life. Thanks for this wonderfull video, and all the others too!
Les grands esprits se rencontrent
The best review I've seen so far about this camera. Thanks Philip you're the man.
Another beautiful review, even if its a pre-production model. Your reviews are so masterful in their editing, pace, music and story. You always manage to effortlessly pull me in and keep me engaged for the entire video. I can watch them over and over without tiring of them. Great work.
Thanks so much :)
The final setup whit the thing wrapped on your waist is the way this will shine. Thank you for your dedication.
Packed with information with beautiful visuals. Thanks for the upload Philip.
Considering purchasing this. The weight is slightly an issue, BUT, I really hate setting up a gimbal. And yes, I $8000 hate setting up gimbals. 😂
Add all the needed gizmos, you're looking well over $10k. Maybe 15k. Wow.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 worth it.
@@ShawnShaman I have a buch of gear I am not going to part with. Yes, no balancing needed, be great, but I am just looking for a Tilta Float or Glide Cam to hang my gimbal from.
@@scottslotterbeck3796 nothing wrong with that man! To each, their own.
A simply outstanding piece of work. Fantastic Mr Bloom as always.
Xx
Very well said with the "youtuber hype"
Have you considered an EasyRig to help with the weight?
A review like no other. Please keep doing what you do, Philip!
Exactly
The one honest review among the hype launch. Well done.
Larger scale production have used bigger rigs to get rid of that for years weather in was the “anti gravity rigs” for movi gimbals or ronin 1 and 2’s (used on A star is born for a shot that’s impossible to out as a gimbal)
Then there’s the armor man rig from Tilta used extensively with a ronin 2 on enterals. (Though the best demtrastion was a long take in nomad land)
Then A maxima was used with i believe an armorman or brand of arm rig was used for the long shot battle prep scene in “the long night: episode of game of thrones (season 8 episode 3, the rig is mentioned in the ASC magazine article.)
Additionally 1917 and The suicide squad both had scenes using custom built small gimbals (1917 for a Alexa mini LF with signature primes, and TSS with red monstros 8k. weapons using Leica [leitz] m.o8 lenses)
These are just a few examples of films that used gimbals with invisible or almost invisible z axis movement.
(Other gimbal type moves, like tight jib shots and orbits I have found to be easy with one or two hands, slow tracking shots are where I have a hard time, and the steadimate has helped wit h that for me)
However if can manage the cost or lens limitations the 4d seems really good for people who hate gak on their rigs.
Finally a good and honest review for this. Thank you for all the details nobody else "notes". Great work.
As the store manager for one of Scandinavia's biggest camera stores i always recommend my staff to watch your videos for the knowledge on video and cameras. Good job as usual
Thank you Ragnar :)
The definitive review of the DJI Ronin 4D. Thanks for the thorough review Philip and hope your back gets better soon.
And here I’m laying in bed more or less paralysed from my inflamed back. “Fun” coincidence 😛 Quality video as always!
LOL
I really wanted a full hour. Fun and real review. Thank you.
Best review for this camera so far. Thank you!
I share your Betacam-induced back problems. Weight out front when hand holding is a big problem with this design. Thanks for your informed, thoughtful content and gorgeous productions.
Exactly. I suppose if I was Arnold Schwarzenegger, I could manage mire than 2 ir 3 minutes. But I'm not!
This was the review I was waiting for. Gorgeous work, Philip! You outdid yourself this time
Cats. It's the cats that make all the difference.
It was obvious from the very first video from Philip... now we know : he managed to trick us into watching his reviews by embedding cats as they were on par with gear specifications.
Well done Mister Bloom, well done !
cats are better than cameras after all! :)
LOL
Right with you on the body falling apart! I'm 63 this year. I just had a complete rotator cuff done in June on my dominate right side.
Did 10 push-ups the other day!
As a one man band videographer, I feel you pain. The 4D looks great and the Lidar tech is something I want to see in smaller cameras, but carrying that weight around on a 9 hour shoot sounds like a nightmare! Great review!
Thanks Philip, I always find your videos inspirational. The work and energy you put into this video is highly appreciated.
Great review, thx!
The first video which did not hype this system into heaven without even looking at potential drawbacks. Thank You.
I think a non gimbled version of this with a 15-20m LIDAR system would be more ergonomic and more popular. So much of the bulk of this machine seems to be supporting the Z axis, to my mind and possibly your back, more effort than its worth.
The 35mm .95 was so much better than i imagined also
thank you for the beautiful video
But TL;DR the Ronin 3D Focus does already exist and does the autofocus part of this.
I felt very happy watching the footage you shot down the alley way around the 6:00 to 7:00 minute mark. Nice choice of music to go with the visuals.
That’s why I said almost. It’s not quite there yet, when it is THEN it will be a revolution.
Luckily i've mostly always been tripod based so not much shoulder-mounted to compound the effects on my bod. But i'm 6'5" and us lanky mofos are prone to back issues. That and hitting our heads on things :D
Thanks Matt!
Another masterful review from Mr Bloom. Wonderful production values , informative and tremendously enjoyable as is his want. Chapeau!
Thank you Chris. Much appreciated.
I didn’t know you can change lenses. That makes it all the more usable. But it still really is a very weird camera.

@@hotwings9382 What he said.
Revolutions can seem awkward. Truly innovative camera/gimbal system. Let's hope Americans can make a knock-off version, lol. Turnabout is fair play.
The 35mm lens not covering the whole sensor is dumb though. So now you have no mild wide-angle in full-frame mode.
My favorite review of the 4d, lots that no-one else has mentioned. Thank you.
Another great review Philip, and please look after yourself. I hope You will get better asap.
AMAZING .... i simply speechless with this review video. you are doing great job

Watch out for his "Best Of" at the end of the year. Also enjoyable.
Thank you 1000 times for making this review! Great job and so detalied.
I have watched a fair few videos on the new DJI camera, and I think this is one of the best, if not the the best review of the DJI 4D. Outstanding!

Wonderful video, Philip. Your reviews are absolutely top notch. Insightful, entertaining, beautifully produced and highly informative. This is by far the best review I’ve seen of this camera. Years ago your review convinced me to purchase a Blackmagic Cinema Camera and this review has done the same for the Ronin 4D. I feel a have a full understanding of its pros and cons thanks to you.
