The insurance can be killer for sure. So many people focus on fitting the payment into the budget without ever checking the insurance cost and get a nasty wake up call. Dude went from liability to full coverage on a “sports car”. The cost to insure it at 19 was steep I’m sure. I think it cost me around $185 for full coverage insurance on a 2012 Ford Focus in 2013 when I was 19. I had no moving violations at all but I was on my own solo insurance and it was steep and that’s a 4 cylinder car that wasn’t fast whatsoever. And I didn’t plan that ahead because I was 19 and dumb. So I wonder if that same type of thing happened with him somehow.

I'm in my mid 40's, and I kick myself for passing on a killer deal I could've gotten about 20 years ago on a motorcycle that I wanted. I could've easily afforded it, and I never saw a deal like that again.

Having a reliable, nicer car is peace of mind and makes you a little happier. Just pay it off and be proud that you are putting money into your dream car. He's upset because he wanted to put a down payment on a house. Maybe it was a decision that you should have thought about more, because you went and changed your plans abruptly, but I would keep the car. Just work harder to pay it off AND save that down payment. A $450/month payment for a better car that doesn't break down twice per month sounds good to me.
