Ah man, when that guy said “I screwed up my family” could really hear the pain in his voice. Really good for him for making really positive steps.
Most people never have that realization. They keep on keeping on in debt.
This man's first step to recovery was asking for help. I wish him and his family the best. Sticking to a budget is not a death sentence. Rather it opens new opportunities.

I’d say I’m fairly manly, mentally and physically tough like iron…but when I hear another’s man’s voice crack like that talking about his family…it hits my soul. Prayers to you. I believe in you!
These kids have a sober father who works hard and cares about them. They are already ahead in life.

My wife and I make $100K and she still shops at Goodwill. I just never buy clothes. If the kids need new clothes for school, start there.
You make 100k combined. Or each make 100k. We make about 160-165k combined and my wife shops at thrift stores or clearance for all baby clothes,and food, Goodwill has actually gone up to much so don’t really go there anymore.
My family makes about 170k and we still monitor our electricity, coupon food, and shop at SHEIN and Temu.
After always working full-time-plus, living frugally, and aggressively saving and investing, I now have a net worth of $13+ million. I still shop on eBay, even for clothing.
We make $180,000/ annually and completely debt free. I still buy non brand, coupon, shop at GW and I'm currently redecorating my home using FB market place. There are a few splurges but I don't need to buy expensive "things". I'm perfectly happy. 😊
My family makes 130k combined and I’m still more likely to make or repair clothes than buy them. Often being smart and thrifty without being a miser is a good way to keep your wealth. It’s also a good way not to increase your waste. Fast fashion is truly evil

I am so encouraged by the kindness of Rachel and George in talking with a man who is just trying so hard.
When I got a $5/hr raise, by going to another factory, I still didn't have money. After doing a budget, I found out I was spending over $1,000 a month on fast food.

I feel you man, you can get through this. I was addicted to pain pills, then heroin, then fentanyl for the better part of 10 years. I was able to keep good jobs to feed my habit for most of that but then it got out of control. Title loans, terrible personal loans. It all went to drugs, and I barely kept them from defaulting. Luckily I got clean coming up on 4 years ago. You can slowly get everything paid back, it can be tough but it's possible. Just don't let the stress of that lead you back to using.

@BrianErwin, that's how I was able to get off of meth. I told God that he said he'd give me the desires of my heart, and my heart desires to get off meth. That was 15 years ago, haven't had the urge to do it since.
This was pretty much my life. Smoked weed when I was younger, then pain pills. Then heroin for 10 years. I was a functioning addict. Worked the whole time and paid for all of this. But Got very sick. Got clean and Ive been clean for 8 years now. Have a son. And I just work hard to support him while building my income. This young man will be fine , he has a family that loves him and he’s works hard

Rachel has a way of giving people hope and being compassionate while being real about the hard work it’s going to take. That’s truly a gift.
I loved this call. He was so real and wanted so badly to do the right thing for his family.
I’ve both lost a bunch of weight AND repaired my finances recently.
One thing people say when you lose weight, that was true for me, is that you kind of hide your issues behind layers of fat, and as you lose those… the issues come back out and you have to confront them before you can progress farther. Almost like bosses in a video game.
The same proved true for me when budgeting… stuff I didn’t know what I was paying for revealed itself, bills that costed me more than they should, different bad financial habits I hadn’t really noticed because I was too distracted by “life stuff”… etc., etc.
You just gotta start the journey. Your problems will reveal themselves, and you face them one at a time.
I experienced the same thing. fat physically protects us from emotional pain. I lost 50lbs after years of suffering
First of all, he needs to stop blaming himself. Noone can fix the past, but we can learn from it. I wish him the best!
There's a fine line between blaming himself and taking responsibility. I hope he steps over soon. He's poised to lead his family in such a good, healthy way. What an awakening he's had. I know it's not easy, but I genuinely see him succeeding. Kudos to his wife for being there, too.

He was readily willing to admit he is at rock bottom. His family is a success story in the making, far as I’m concerned. He is taking accountability and asking for help, they’ll get there.
Flunked out of my first college because I was embarrassed to ask for help. After that I realized I should never be embarrassed for asking for help some things you just can't do alone

I genuinely mean it when I express my stress and concern regarding the market crash and high inflation, particularly in relation to my retirement. I have been experiencing losses for quite some time, and while some may argue that crises can present opportunities, I am feeling overwhelmed. However, I understand that investing is a long-term endeavor, and it is crucial to maintain focus on the bigger picture and the long run.
The best course of action if you lack market knowledge is to ask a consultant or investing coach for guidance or assistance. Speaking with a consultant helped me stay afloat in the market and grow my portfolio to about 65% since January, even though I know it sounds obvious or generic. I believe that is the most effective way to enter the business at the moment.

Larry, keep the faith 🙏🏼 Yes, your family needs food, shoes, and shelter but what they really need (and have) is you. You’re sober man, praise the Lord. Addiction often accompanies other issues. This will be hard but you can break these cycles of addiction and poverty so that your family won’t have to go through them. The cycle breaks now. I will pray for you brother, this is temporary. Don’t give up, you can do this. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I like a guy like this, admitting he screwed up and wants to change rather than these single moms that call in and are given 5 different pieces of advice and argue why they are such a victim and cant do this and that. I wish this guy well
Plenty of callers - married, single, men, women - have put excuse after excuse when given advice. You must have some beef with single mothers (who are often "warriors" as Dave calls them) to make such a sweeping statement.
My aunt passed and I inherited some of her portfolio with Fidelity and cash savings, I’m 28 with about 400k cash in savings and as usual everybody’s preaching invest, so what stocks are a good long term buy, only major purchase I intend to make is buying a home in 5years from my returns
Lucky you, I’d buy a lot of tech stocks and Dividend portfolios with that.
Don’t come to TH-cam looking for TH-cam advise, instead contact a fiduciary for proper guidance.
Same, I just use TH-cam for research purposes, I run all my major investment through an investment adviser, the market is just too unstable to handle things on your own.

We are on a combined $200K and we still live month-to-month.
We do have 2 little ones in daycare so that costs us about a 3rd of our income. The mortgage is another 3rd. It doesn't leave much for everything else.
Would you ever consider staying at home with your kids? Seems it would be so much less hassle and money. Then, a few years in the future, when they're in school full-time, you could go back to work. Probably would save $ on food, clothes, etc.

@@gailhoover9263 We did seriously look at this for a while. The issue is that we both earn around the same wage (around $100K each) so either of us becoming a full-time parent would really make things tough as our mortgage is around $700K.
Always make sure to cancel subscriptions and yoga classes/instructors to save a ton of money!
Depends on the value you receive from the subscriptions/training you get.

Yup. I think that is the whole idea behind pushing subscriptions. At least with magazine subscriptions back in the day you had to physically take them out of mailbox and see the unread magazines pile up on your coffee table or night stand but now there’s nothing tangible to remind you.
Makes you wonder how many forgetful and deceased subscribers are still on autopay every month.

This dude made me start tearing up, he’s gone through hell. He didn’t want to become addicted to opioids but he’s the prime example of doctors being too lenient with pain killers. He’s done something so important here asking for help. He will get through this and the most important thing is to keep strong and be open with your atruggles

I didn't find myself in a "got myself into some trouble", but my family was in "dire trouble."
Our firstborn began showing medical problems, and the doctors and specialists couldn't find a duagnosis. After just a couple of years, his long hospital stays, expensive tests, and specialists, maxed out both my husband's and my medical insurances. In addition, we had a toddler and newborn when his pediatric neurologist advised us not to have more children. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with a terminal progressive degenerative recessive gene.
I had to quit my career to become his sole caretaker, and because we could no longer cover daycare, along with all of the monthly medical equipment and supplies, and unexpected hospitalizations.

With God, you've got this!! You just don't know it, yet! With your amazing courage to call in, Miss Rachel gifting you FPU, and God's guidance and help, you will see the bites taken out of your elephant-sized debt bit by bit, and chunk by chunk. I assure you, sir!

I love the empathy and understanding they show callers. Too many financial advisers on social media treat people like they're weak or stupid because they are in debt. Dave's show respects the variety and complexity of the human experience! This allows people to open up and get the help they need.
This guy will make it, he is able to be honest with himself and others, in can see the problem address it, most folks can't be honest with them selfs . He will MAKE the CHANGE.
My family makes 90k, 4 kids in Phoenix, but I still consider us middle class, because we tell our money what to do, our money doesn't tell us what to do.
That's pushing it. I make 180k along.

Why do you say "I still consider us middle class"? According to the US Census Bureau, middle class household income for 2024 is $50K to $150K. You are in the middle of the middle-class.
Though the average household is 2.68 persons. So your household of 6 would be at or below the median.

it's the FOOD. food has become so expensive. whether you eat out or eat at home, the cost is just ridiculous. I am really into healthy eating so i always tended to overspend on food but now a 1/4lb burger combo meal from five guys costs more than most people earn in an hour.
That’s so true. I started a new job about a year ago where my income was nearly tripled and thought “wow this is going to be so easy now.” Wrong. I’m traveling more than 50% of the time and I’ve come to realize that my food spending sneakily became a major financial hurdle. And I’m not even buying fancy meals. Like you said even fast food burgers are more than hourly wages in a lot of cases. It’s absurd!
I keep hearing about food prices. And during the main part of the pandemic, yeah, they went up. But they have come way way down here. I just don't see how food prices are an actual problem for people. Unless you throw away more food than you eat. But if so. That's the problem. Pre pandemic I would spend 30-50 per week on food. Now it's more like 35-55 or so. It's really close. It's things like bread & potatoes & meat. Those things haven't recovered here. So I just have trouble seeing food as a real budgeting issue.
@@pdxmusl1510 in many states, a mcdonalds combo meal is now $18. the price of meat hasn't gone up too much where i live, but the price of everything else has. paper towels are like $2 a roll now. for someone who is struggling to put together $1,000 like this caller, it becomes a huge hole in the budget.
@@hunterdavis2833 i often overspend on food and honestly, the inflation has made it even worse because now i justify spending a few dollars more for fancy meals because it's like $24 for a five guys burger vs $26 for a "fancy" meal that feels more like it's in line with the outrageous price.....the $26 "fancy" meal is literally bacon, eggs and toast that is made of real food, without chemicals by someone who washes their hands, nothing more than that......this used to be $3.50 at any diner in the country.....less if you didn't care about the hand washing

I don't understand why this is so complicated spend LESS money. If you want to lose weight you eat LESS food. The principal can be applied to many areas
yes but CPI is up 20% in 5years, inflation nearly 48% in 10, and rent up by 25% in the same time. with vages increasing only few%
just 5 years ago, the same income that would have been able to keep you afloat and afford you room to save, is now barely scrabing by and sometimes not even that…

I have benefited by learning a lot about nutrition and only buying groceries on the outside of the isles and not the middle section were all of the.
preserved food is.
I owed 52k on a proposed I bought with a Heloc. Rates were low. Big mistake. Thanks to Dave I was able to pay off that debt. And saved for a new roof plus fencing. Total of 82k. No loans.

It’s amuses me that people don’t know where their own money is going. You put in the blood, sweat and tears into your paycheck. I would think you’d want to know where it’s going. But since he disclosed he had an addiction of some kind, that explains it.
Our society is setup to where we’re constantly being bombarded with opportunities to spend money. It’s very easy to lose track. Fast food, subscriptions, medical costs, car maintenance. The list goes on.
Why are you here Mike? Do you realize most people who start Dave Ramsey don’t have a budget? Do you realize some who are millionaires now did not have a budget initially until they found Dave? You seem to be on the wrong page since you’re so out of touch with many people’s realities

I wonder why ex addicts always sound so frantic and scattered when they talk, is that just from the drugs/alcohol? Like they always just ramble on and on about tangential things when you ask them a simple question, and use tons of meaningless filler words. I'm not negatively judging the guy, I commend him for getting clean and trying to better his and his families situation, I've just noticed that is a consistent behavior, and you can always kinda tell someone's history from it.

Hate when people say "we had to". Everything is a choice. Some choices are necessary but when we acknowledge our situations and that we happen to life instead of life happening to us we can gain control and momentum to remedy the situation

Car repairs r a huge hit but… majority of car issues you can fix on your own, TH-cam it, is it hard? Hell yea, but it’s either dedicate a weekend to fixing it or 1k in labor to fix it

You don't need an every dollar app, just look and be aware of where and how much of your money get spent. Buying uncessery stuff and debt sure will eat away your paycheck in seconds.
