Think the wind always seems to pick up when I start dealing with small seeds. Good reminder. I always seem to forget a few things I need to start now to plant out in fall.
We were just thinking the same thing when we filmed this 😂. It’ll be perfectly still until you open the first seed pod. Oh well - helps to spread the seeds faster.
Us gardeners always have something to do and we're always thinking ahead. I have sown some seeds for next year and I've also found lots of tiny Digitalis plants that have done their own thing in the garden. When you think of all the seeds that they produce, I'm surprised that we're not over run with Foxgloves. Your grapes in the greenhouse are looking good.
Isn't it true! And we even find foxgloves in places that we certainly didn't put them. haha. BUT... they're some of our favorites, so we don't complain. 🥰

Thanks for the reminder. I will remember the small holes in the trays. I made such a mess this spring, and lost so many small plants, because I left them out in the rain, and it rained a lot. (As you well remember.) Poor babies, I will never do it again, so I laughed with you.

We are not very patient around here... with our super short summers, we have to skip anything that we can! haha

WOW! SOOO informative! I’ve never really planted biennials as I don’t have the patience. From what you have taught me in prior videos, I’m going to plant the foxglove around the edges and use pop cycle sticks as my tool to lift the seedlings. I’m going right to Johnny seeds and order seeds ASAP. Now I have to figure out where to plant them! Also, I like the tag team instructions where you fill in information as you go along.
SUPER excited for your foxglove project! And if you sow them now, you can have flowers on them next year already! Plus... if you let them self-seed in your garden, you'll always have some coming up and flowering.

That's great to hear! Our climate is similar to zone 8a... so we're quite the same :) And yes... this way you get to 'skip' ahead and have flowers already next year. Hope you're having great gardening weather now!
I knew that the perfect time was August- September (toward the end of summer), but I guess it depends on the climate zone. And on the amount of sowing one has to do. :)
In my experience, as long as the seedlings have time to bulk up and establish themselves a little before the frost they will be fine and flower the next spring. Last year I missed the window but I decided to try anyway (because of warmer climate we haven't had frosts until January in the last years - circa zone 9 or so). So I sowed a few perennials and biennials in November. Plants were on the small side in early spring but they did catch up and flowered beautifully. Verbascum and Centranthus still flowering after dead heading the first flush.
I thought I'd share so people who want to try know that they have options. Cheers.

It was sunny that day - otherwise, it’s been a rainy summer. 😅
Yes, we cut down some perennials in the fall and the rest in the late winter. Annika’s just get pulled up. There’s no real “reason” to which ones we cut back in autumn or spring … we just pick the ones that have really fallen by autumn and cut those. The prettier ones (like Phlomis), we leave until late winter 😀
What planting zone are you in? Do you get much snow cover through the winter? Is it the same as sprinkling the seeds into the garden where we want these seedlings to come up and grow from this summer and through to next Spring when they would start flowering in May ( here in USA zone 5 b)?
We’re on the east coast of Denmark - it’s similar to zone 8a. We get snow … altho it’s anyone’s guess in recent years 😅
And yes, this is exactly the same as if you scatter the seeds and let them grow from this year. The reason we do it in trays is to better control where they grow - and so we don’t weed them away by accident. 🥰
Do you know if hollyhocks seeds need light to germinate?
Hollyhock seeds do need light to germinate. They should be sown on the surface of the soil and not covered...or at the least, covered very little. Light helps to trigger the germination process.
Scatter the seeds on the soil surface and gently press them in, then keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

So as I understand that from the initial seed tray, once they have a second set of leaves you re pot them, and put in the garden--but do they STAY in pots over the winter or do you then transplant them into the garden at some point in the late fall?
You can do either way.
You can either put them out in the garden before frost... or leave them over winter until spring.
We do both -- as we sell plants at local markets here. :)

how do you cope with weeds, all my garden is just constantly germinating new weeds every damn day, ive removed more soil and weeds this summer and last summer and yr before and it never ends. and its just so disheartening that i am nearly ready to just fill everything in with concrete because there is no joy with gardening, ive grown to despise it.

We live in a climate with a LOT of rain -- so we are no strangers to weeds. In fact, there's a whole movement in Denmark that just embraces weeds as part of nature. It's called 'wild for the wild'. So yes... we have weeds. BUT, how we deal with them is that we plant very very closely together -- much closer than any seed packet or planting center will suggest ;) That keeps our garden very tight. Because we don't have much bare soil showing, our weed problem isn't that bad. We have to weed pretty heavily in the early spring -- before plants are big. But after that, it's really quite minimal weeding that we have to do. Our perennials are big enough to keep sunlight from reaching where weeds would want to grow.
So if I can enourage you to plant closer together -- it might just be the answer you're looking for. Of course I don't know what it's like in your climate... but here... it works for us.

In Danish it’s pronounced as we pronounce it. The names of all the plants are listed on the screen.
