    The pre-70's Steelers were a total trainwreck.

      Yes they were. People know the Steelers today as one of the best run franchises in the NFL who consistently draft well and compete year after year. That got started when Chuck Noll came to town and changed the entire culture of the team.

    There is also the fact that Buddy found it absolutely hilarious as well. Let's say his staff had the world's most fun chewing out of all time....😉

    great story! the NFL used to be so much cooler when men with other jobs or coming back from a war used to play.

    Bill Nelson was part of one of the best games in college football history: the 1963 Rose Bowl against Wisconsin where after USC scored on the first play in the fourth quarter, UW mounted a furious comeback from 28 down that fell five points short. Nelson and UW QB Ron Vander Kelen were named co-MVPs.

    This reminds me of when the Vikings signed VTech q.b. Sean Glennon to play receiver 😆😆 it also showed how bad Brad Childress truly was as a head coach!

    Part of steelers 40 year dark era. Nowadays they know everything about a pick even when they take a piss.

    There’s also Bubby Brister, a Steelers draft pick from the mid 1980s who was John Elway’s primary backup quarterback in Denver in the late 90s.

    • @rocknroll7316
      @rocknroll7316 ปีที่แล้ว

      He filled In while Elway was injured for 4 or 5 games. They could not have won the super bowl without him

    One of the best trades the Browns ever made was getting Bill Nelsen (16) from Pittsburgh. He replaced Frank Ryan (13) on a good Browns team in that era. Also went on to be a QB coach after his playing days were over. He coached a young rookie QB down in Tampa called Doug Williams (12).

    What about Eagles drafting Jalen Hurts in 2nd round as an apparent backup QB when they had Carson Wentz? Lots of people were upset. People were saying GM should be fired for a "stupid pick." Then Wentz went downhill and wanted to be traded, then, so far, Hurts became a good pick in hindsight (some could say 'greatest stupid pick').

    he had 89 yards, which would be like just spiking the ball for every play for an entire quarter!

    Was Buddy Parker really unaware of who was quarterbacking the national championship-winning collegiate football team in 1962?

    • @davester1970
      @davester1970 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nobody in the Steelers organization had a clue before Chuck Noll came to town. You are talking about a team that camp cut Johnny Unitas and passed up the chance to draft Jim Brown in 1957. Those two boneheaded decisions doomed the Steelers to another 18 years of losing.
      Could you imagine Johnny U with Jim Brown in his backfield?

      Right you are. Basically Buddy Parker operated in the same vein as Aldege “Baz” Bastien, who would use the same strategy in the late 1970s-early 1980s with the Penguins. However, Bastien was severely hampered by the team’s financial situation at the time. However, after Baz died in March 1983, Eddie Johnston did away with Baz’ strategy of trading prime draft picks and instead build through the draft, which is what Chuck Noll did when he arrived in Pittsburgh in 1969.

    Buddy Parker wasn’t at the draft long likely due to being late to meet Bobby Layne at a bar. Bobby might have retired from playing but he was just hitting his stride in getting drunk.

    12:10 - Pick no. 136, "scraping the bottom of the barrel." Um, like Tom Brady at #199? Bart Starr, 17th round at #200? Brock Purdy, drafted at #262? Maybe "the bottom of the barrel" isn't so bad!

      My bad on that. What I think happened was my chart only focused from row A2 on, and I had the Colts on A1, since they were first alphabetically. They had 9 picks

      @@OfficialJaguarGator9 -- Hello. I always enjoy watching your very informative videos. I'm old enough to remember when the NFL had just 14 teams, as in 1963 (the AFL was completely separate then). So when I saw 13 teams on your chart, I knew that one was missing. I follow the Eagles; I liked your video on Nick Foles. 👍🏻 Joe.
