  • The Dennis Bowman digital films include a digitized segment from 1986 that Bowman did for WPXI on the 50th anniversary of the 1936 flood in Pittsburgh. The segment featured an interview with Dr. H. Ward Ewalt, a Pittsburgh optometrist who filmed the flood and the damage it created around the city. This collection also includes a digitized copy of the entire film shot buy Ewalt, which Bowman created in 1986. The film by Ewalt includes footage of the flood in downtown Pittsburgh, the J&L mill in Hazelwood, Lawrenceville, Manchester, Etna, Turtle Creek, Bellevue and Millvale. Ewalt passed away in 1995 after a long career in optometry.

My Mom worked in town during this flood. I heard all about the flood growing up. I'm glad you posted it so I can finally see it.

Great footage. The flooding was more extensive and deeper than I realized. Clean up would be monumental. What a disaster this was.

Dr Ewalt was my FIRST OPTOMETRIST. I was 9 or 10 when I first saw him. RIP Dr Ewalt!

I was one month old when the flood happened. Born in Seward, Pa, 60mi. east of Pittsburgh. Watching this film, am reminded of the human capacity to overcome. Thank you for the film!!!! Frances in NM

What if Donald Trump was President in 1936.Think of the possibilities, He and Adolf would have gotten along well. How long would he have waited to send help to the cities, or would he have had Jared deal with it so both of them could make money.

Working now in a highrise (Highmark) at Fifth and Liberty, and thinking about what took place 90 years ago, especially since the Joseph Horne building is right out my window.

Those light fixtures on the Horne's building were awesome. They should be replicated and put on the Highmark Fitness Center.

Thank you for posting this! I've seen photos over the years, but this is the first time I've seen video. Amazing and sad. My grandmother worked at Horne's for most of her life (Downtown Horne's, in the cafeteria)... She well-remembered the flood and was devastated financially as they did not get a paycheck for a long time. She and my mother (8 years old at the time) lived on East Street. My mother (95 as I write this) does not remember much about the flood. My father was 11, lived at 2441 Sorrel street, (125 feet higher than the river) and was happy they were high enough not to flood; other relatives were not as lucky...

If u go to the Blvd of the allies entrance of the post gazette building and look to the left of the door,u will see a sign with a line that showed how high the water was. From the sidewalk it's about 8 foot high. U can only see the sign and what it is,but it's too high to actually touch

Crazy to see that the power grid was still operational. I wouldn't want to be riding in that streetcar, since electricity and water don't work well together.

My grandmother took my mom and her sisters, all in single digit ages, over to the McKees Rocks Bridge to see the flooding. They would have looked down onto the Pennsylvania Railroad, close to where the camera was set up.
There are a few photos that are commonly seen, but this film is much better. Many more areas are shown.

250 million clean up in 1936- can you imagine the Cost if something of this magnitude occurred now in 2021?
