$380 Emergency?! Arc'teryx Zeta SL Jacket Review

- The Zeta SL is a superlight Gore-tex Paclite+ jacket that was designed as an emergency use hardshell for hiking/trekking by Arc'teryx. This jacket has great packability and price point at the cost of durability. Being a 2L construction, it does not have a backer to improve next to skin feel when worn with a t-shirt. It is one of the most affordable Arc'teryx jackets, however users should be aware of the sacrifices made during design if they are using this as an everyday shell.

I think “emergency” may mean different things to you and me. To me, it means something you only use in dire situations, maybe once a year. For example, a cheap plastic poncho is for emergencies.
The Zeta SL is something to take with you if it might rain, or might not. If you’re heading out on a hike into the rain, or any sort of drizzle, and you know it's going to be constantly wet, then something like the Beta AR or LT is the way to go.
I agree
I enjoyed your video and really like the fact that you did point out the shortcomings of pac-lite goretex membrane. Many reviewers don't necessarily come out and say such things, and followers might get easily mislead into thinking $380 goretex is a cure all jacket instead of emergency one (daily use is fine but like you mentioned, more frequent washes is definitely needed to get rid of sweats and oils). Anyways, I appreciate your videos and please keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words Jason!
How do you wash it then from “oils”?
I have the same jacket in orange. I wanted a simple, packable, waterproof but durable jacket for all my uses - fishing, hunting, snowboarding. It’s worked fine for fishing and hunting. I can put in my vests and pull out when I need that extra layer for wind or rain. It doesn’t work well for snowboarding. The fit was too snug for 200 lb 6’ dude to wear over, base and insulation layers. I put my phone in a pocket and sat down, the pocket seams split instead of stretching. It’s under warranty review. Arcteryx people at the store I purchased it from told me it wasn’t intended for that heavy use. Only for hiking etc. I guess that begs the question…why would I pay $300 for such a garment? There are lots of lightweight, packable “emergency” garments for half the price. The reason I paid the premium is because of the brands reputation for quality.
Thx for the detailed information bro. Recently bought same as urs. Feels good.
Works for me I’m going backpacking at the great Smokey mts like that it’s light and easy to pack.
I think they specifically discontinued most of the varieties and labeled the sl to emphasize emergency and light weight.
Fwiw I found an older one from 2009 and it has worked well enough for light summer use. Super snug too. Though for everyday/city use I'd get a Gamma LT instead.
I believe the rest of the Zeta will be returning in FW21.
@@abearsmind I hope so! The new Beta LT was a letdown for its price due to only using N40d 3L Goretex with tricot backing, instead of Goretex Pro - at least it came with pit zips! And rip to the discontinued Beta FL which used the N40d Most Rugged and Most Breathable 3L Goretex Pro which replaced the old Beta LT with the N40p-X 3L Goretex Pro. But I love pit zips since I get hot quick, I snagged a Beta SL Hybrid on 25% sale with REI which I’m worried I’ll regret due to poor reviews and actual ability to keep the user dry. Bring back the Zeta AR is what we need, nice trim fit, no helmet compatibility, and pit zips!
I can fit an Atom AR under mine easily. Feels great. I just wish the sleeves weren't so dang long.
Atom AR should be just about snug, I tried it with the Thorium AR for fun and it was a no go.
Yea the sleeves are ridiculous.
Proton FL fits wonderfully under the Zeta SL as well as the Patagonia Better Sweater and Down Jacket. (All items are size Small, and user is 5ft 8in 145lbs)
Greetings. I have a size s ar hoodie, what size to buy zeta sl? thanks
@@dmitriivinogradov81 In my experience, I'd go with the zeta in the same size as your AR.
Which color way is this please?
Next time can we get a spin around so we can see the fit for the side and back?
Honestly water got through a pro gore is better but heavier. Honestly I can wear this but not with alit of leaders maybe a hoody. However it’s not convenient to layer so I just wear a cheap insulated outdoor Columbia jacket
POV you came from TikTok where the guy is showering in arcterx and you want one now.
hey, I have this jacket and I'm currently have a trouble of moisture/water leaking on my left sleeve. Do you have any recommendations on what to do about it? Thank you very much and love the vid 🔥
I appreciate your review. I think I am going to go for arx 2.0 k6 beyond clothing. It has about the same price, but it has much longer duality. What is your opinion if you have any?
Is it bootleg or you got it at an oficial arcteryx store. Because the embrodidery at minute 2:04 looks odd to me. Specially the fact that they are not embroidered separateedly and you Can see the stitching between letters
I can testify that they are real as I got mine from official Arcteryx online store & the embroided logo looks the same .
My authentic one looks like this as well lol. I was stressed but thankful after I looked at others. My Alpha SV is not like this lol
Which color is that?
Do you think I can use it for skiing with multiple layers underneath (fleece , etc..) with temperatures varying between 5 and -10°C ?
Yes it would most certainly work, as long as you don't do any tree runs as it has a lightweight face. Regular washing and upkeep should see it through many many years of use.
Should I get the Nike ACG Misery Ridge or the Zeta SL?
If you want to pack your jackets into your pack a lot can’t go wrong with Zeta SL. If not the ACG might be the better solution for you.
Unfortunate that the Zeta AR is discontinued..
Should I go for size S or M since I’m 5'9 a bit skinny, i’d like the jacket to be not slim but not oversized , just a bit loose .
I think S will probably be more suitable for you, the sleeves might be too long on a M.
I bought the same goretex jacket online however it was the north face though it is great quality jacket. Since that time I had many goretex jackets but none of them worked so well as that tnf for 100$.
Goretex is Goretex, no matter what brand it is. Form, fit, and performance on the other hand is where Arc'teryx excels.
it looks really form fitting. is there enough room to layer up and still have adequate room to move?
there is room for 1 puffy-ish midlayer (such as Atom LT) or sweater, plenty of room to move around in thanks to the patterning.
Size up their very fitted if wearing a baselayer fleece and/ or insulation jacket.
What size are you wearing? What’s your height and weight? And is it good for snow and if I layer up?
Size L, I’m 6’ 210lbs. It’s trim fit so it’s a bit snug if you layer with Thorium AR underneath. Atom LT and AR are no problem.
Is it a warm jackey
Jacket
It is just a shell, no insulation.
What size?
size large
Is this for emergency use?
it can be used daily if you take care of it and wash frequently
@@abearsmind does that mean this jacket is not a good choice for daily use?
Emergency to Arc'tyrex means you can only afford this model because you just got laid off...
