I know many Americans at school, work are curious about turban and only a very few asked me about it. It's not really awkward. People try too hard to fit in and relate to those who are different. Just mind your own business, be polite to everyone, and there shouldn't be any problem. You'll probably find that many of these people are more introverted anyway (at least towards people unlike themselves) and don't necessarily want to engage in banter or explanations of their culture. This has always been my experience. I speak to those who want to be friendly, I am polite to those who want their privacy, and everybody lives their lives.

    I had once bargained with a Sikh vendor over a coat that he was selling, and it was the politest bargain ever. He was extremely gentle and kind. He ultimately sold it at a lower price and told me to keep it a secret that he reduced the price for me. The way he spoke to me had a lasting impact on me ( it happened like five years ago) and I really wish I get to meet more people like him. The whole encounter genuinely made me raise my standards on how I should expect to be treated by people, while expressing the same level of respect to them.

    I thought Sikh was pronounced “Seek” not “Sick”. Guess I learned something new today.

    • @diphyllum8180
      @diphyllum8180 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Sometimes we pronounce it "seek" just so it doesn't sound like we're saying that we're ill... in the gurmukhi script (mouth of the Guru, it's a phonetic writing system invented by the second Guru to transcribe the first's multilingual poetry) the vowels ਿ and ੀ are a short i and a long ee respectively but oviously they're pretty similar it's just whether the line is before or after the consonant. The word ਸਿਖ, sikh, means student, and yeah technically it's ਸਿਖ not ਸੀਖ but either is acceptable

    • @ashesmandalay1762
      @ashesmandalay1762 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Both are correct. Sikhs come from around the world and speak many languages and have many accents. Some say "seek" others say "sik", both mean the same thing.

    • @diphyllum8180
      @diphyllum8180 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      While it's true that Sikhs live around the world and speak many languages, what they have in common is Gurbani, which is written in a phonetic writing system, and the word Sikh as written in the Gurbani is a short "i" not a long "ee" or it'd be written ਸੀਖ.

      No, sikh is pronounced more like sick than like seek, but sometimes Sikhs will pronounce it seek in English to avoid confusion. Either is acceptable and not offensive. But you can look in the scriptures, the word is ਸਿਖ not ਸੀਖ -- short i vowel not long ee

    Dude I wish all religions were inviting . ... I have such curiosity about orthodox Jews and whenever I talk about the stuff I DO know about their culture,they get all close mouthed and shy away. No I don't ask about the ridiculous sheet question...I just ask how was their shabbos, if they have kids in their early 20s I ask if they are having fun or getting redt interesting shidduch.(like possible marriage candidates )

    • @diphyllum8180
      @diphyllum8180 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Judaism has a long and complex history, they have their reasons for being a bit reserved about it. Traditionally to become a Jew they're supposed to turn you away three times, if you ask to convert a fourth time they'll let you in and tell you everything but if you're not committed they won't bother with you. Sikhi is supposed to be for everyone though, the Gurus wrote in as many languages as possible it's not supposed to be insular

    • @BinBinB4
      @BinBinB4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just say straight up that you're curious and respectfully ask if they can answer your questions.
      At what point during the week do you ask how their Shabbos was?
      Asking about shidduchim (plural of shidduch) can be touchy for some, and not everyone uses a shadchan (someone that helps people find shidduchim.)
      Personally, among other reasons, I am wary of answering questions because I've had experience with Christians going all missionary on me.

    • @hk2336

      Good question. Sikhs are required to cover their hair and they dont cut their hair. So have really long hair. So it convenient to put it up in a turban. But on casual occasions sikhs use bandanas or other thigs to cover their hair.

    • @LIFEwithBAVAN
      @LIFEwithBAVAN 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Orthodox Sikhs are required to have unshorn, uncut hair. The style in which covering it up should be respectful, but the turban is not "neccessary". Just a recommended cultural component that was adopted from the central culture the religion was founded within- Punjabi culture.

      Both are right. There are Sikhs all over the world from many different cultures, they pronounce it differently.

      The actual word is Sikh, pronounced like Sick with a softer kh sound. :)

    The woman thing is wrong. All the sikh woman in history wore turbans

      No they didn't. Research your history, stop believing everything told by a 2₹ granthi.
      Men used to go to war, not women. Except one or two here.

      @hope2251 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually no they didn't wear a turban. But that doesn't mean they are different from women.
      They used to cover head, used to have uncut hair and used to know the shastars.

    • @hope2251
      @hope2251 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AmanSingh0699 there are no exceptions in Sikhism.
      Women are equally supposed to know shastars and go to wars is they want to. There is a difference between a statistical argument and possibilities
