Just want to add my experience raising chicks in a tote. I use the Quail base because the chicks can drink and not swim in the water, a piece of wood under the water base also helps reduce the trash in the water rim. I also use 1 TBS of raw honey in the water the first week and continue to add some type of electrolyte vitamin to promote good health. One plastic bottle was leaking and I believe it was a different brand then the base sold at the same store (be aware). I'm brooding another round of Ranger chicks, first time with meat chicks, all are doing well. I use a 27 qt tote and a dozen chicks, after 2-3 weeks these need divided to no more than 8 chicks until moving them into your coop.

Love it! Thank you for sharing your experience. Hope your first batch of meat chickens goes well! Will you be processing them yourself?

@@HeadrickHomestead The 13 Freedom ranger chicks are growing, nine more Cornish in a brooder and just acquired three turkey poults. Yes, will be processing these and 6-8 young roosters as they are getting fat. Working on getting everything together in-addition to a honey crop coming in soon.

Is it okay to just leave a shallow bowl of water out for them like a dog?

Yes absolutely. They’re just more prime to getting pushed over and getting poop and bedding kicked into it so it needs cleaning more often

      Yes! Exactly!
