How to Raise Turkeys | From Poults to Full Grown
I'll walk through the care and feed for turkeys during their 3 main life stages. The first 4 weeks are super easy in the brooder just checking on them for a few minutes a day. Then the next 4 weeks we move them out to broiler shelters in the pasture since they are still small enough to easily walk through the electric netting. Finally at 8 weeks old, they graduate to the poultry electric netting for the last 6-8 weeks of their life where they enjoy a bigger area to roam around.

Do you have a manure spreader that you can spread it into the fields and into the neighbor's fields? The residual hey and maneuver is like gold to the soil

I do the same. Live in northern Maine, so the deep bedding throws off a little heat as it composts and that helps in the dead of winter.

Deep litter method is amazing. The compost is full of beneficial microbial life and predator mites like the velvet mite, which devour harmful mites that can infest chickens. Deep litter when properly done as. Shown n this video, creates a universe of life that keeps chickens clean and healthy. I like how the pen has a roof that lets light in, keeping the run dry but still bright. Great video! Thank you for sharing.

My chickens have not slowed down at 5 years old. My 8 year old just stopped but she is the mother figure to the others so she and all my chickens will die naturally. I have absolutely zero bug issues in my backyard, they fertilize my grass too.

I have an acre of land and live in Northwest Florida. My properties fenced in I keep my chickens all 50 of them in their run until the last chicken lays her Egg around 4:15 in the afternoon. Then I turned them out until dark, but if I’m going to have a particularly long season of dry weather, I don’t do that because of the poop issue, but we get fairly consistent rain that washes it away.. I’ve never had an overgrazing problem using this system, nor have I had them laying eggs outside of their nest boxes. When I’m done in the late afternoon with all of my chores, there’s nothing more relaxing than sitting on the swing on the deck watching the chickens scratch for bugs and seeds!

My chickens are technically not free range cuz they in a fence lol but we have guard dogos so they kill lots of predators, and most other predators get shot, no hawks tho cuz of a stupid law… but it’s ok I scare most hawks away so my chickys stay safe

I was visiting a property of a guy who free ranged 350 chickens. He had a great operation and was very experienced, but he had a massive part of his property which was grazed to only dirt and mud. We were talking about how to reclaim it and he said it's been impossible as he can't put them in another area/temporarily exclude them or he would lose the free range status. Every time he seeded it they would ignore their usual meals and have a field day. Sounds like total free range isn't the best option in a lot of cases.

We tried to do this in our hen house but its too humid and wet in Florida for this to work for us. We ended up finding a lot of mushrooms growing on and around the hen house mushroom spores are really bad for chickens. We use woodchips/multch in the chicken run and pine shavings in the hen house. Luckily my chickens tend to poop in one area so when it gets really poopy i just rake that bedding out into my wheelbarrow and put as much as would fit into my compost bin. Its good to keep the bedding clean because if not you are basically inviting mites and other pests into the hen house. I only have to clean it every 6 weeks or so. Also once a month i go into the chicken run with a 5 gallon bucket of apple cider vinegar water and dip an old broom in it and begin to scrub all the poopy surfaces like the ramp and tops of their feeders that they like to stand on (and poop) we never have to clean the actual run. Whenever it seems like its getting flies i rake the woodchips around so i guess that counts as a deep litter method but i couldnt do that in the hen house itself. Whenever we cut the grass i throw all the clippings inside the run to add greens to the woodchips so they compost down on their own.

I use this method in an open air "birdhouse" that I have in my backyard. It's a 10x20 area with 6 chickens (city limit), very small henhouse and I clean it out maybe 2x a year. It never stinks, and my chickens are very healthy and it can sometimes rain for weeks, still never stinks. I think you just have to give it a try and see, maybe some areas won't work, but then again, you may be able to work it and see, add more layers of bedding, stir it up, etc. I also frequently throw their chicken feed, and kitchen scraps (veggies and meat) directly onto the bedding bc that keeps them scratching it up. But I know 1 thing, chicken coups with bare ground smell like death the second it rains, I watched a friend's farm while they were on vacation and it barely rained and It was the most wretched smell I've ever smelled. 😩

I found some non GMO chicken feed but, it have canola in it! Thant is a big no for me. Just saying I got rid of soy and corn in my feed as well as feeding rice and beans fermented adding GrunTerra black soldier fly larva. They lay like crazy and are very happy. I do feed fermented whole corn in the winter in small amounts.
