that would come with a hardware requirement at both ends- so video makers would need the ability to record (and edit) smells, and video watchers would need to have the equipment to produce the smells as indicated by the video

Totally agree with you about level boarding. It's something that should be a solved problem for all new trains. Unfortunately while a small number of trains in the UK are being rolled out with level boarding, the majority of manufacturers seem to want to stick with their outdated designs with limited accessibility, and there seems to be no pressure on them to change.
I know train ordering takes many years, so there are likely non-level boarding trains in the pipeline. However, the UK needs to draw a line in the sand and state that no further trains will be ordered without level boarding.
Hopefully you'll pop over to Dublin when the new DART units enter service, which do all have level boarding!

I think you made a good video too! Inviting the transport youtubers along to events like this - and the videos you already make anyway - are a great way to convey fascination with public transport to the public while also creating and feeding productive conversations about needed improvements to the system as a whole and in detail. It is clear to see from the videos that the several youtubers that were invited along to this were not prevented from voicing criticisms and offering transparency. It's a good PR move by SWR.

Great video Jen - I’m looking forward to when we get the new trains on the Dorking line. Well done for raising the comment about level boarding. With the current SWR trains it’s such a huge step down I always feel anxious getting off the train , especially if my knee is playing me up. With all the awareness about accessibility these days you would think they would have thought that through by now . I really enjoy your videos - keep up the good work.

Great video as usual Jen! If I remember correctly, Merseyrail did work with a group of regular users of the network to help with the design process of the 777 trains, and took on their feedback when it came to the final design. They also had to adjust the height of the platforms at every station, so that they would be level with the train floor. They had to close the network off in stages in order to do that.

It was great to see inside the cabs! On my local line we get level boarding with a bit that sticks out of the train on some, but not all, of the services. Could be anything that's not a 153 or a 150 but I'm not sure about that; I think all the new ones have them and the old ones are going away.

    Hi Jen,
I appreciate your honest and quite valid criticism with accessability with these new trains.
Unlike another frequent and verbose TH-camr who covers London-based train travel, you hit the nail on the head that people with limited mobility, especially those with wheelchairs, cannot safely board these new trains.
Yes, a large part of the problem are the antiquated station platforms, networkwise.
But, for those stations that built their platforms, supposedly for level boarding, still lack accessability for those of limited mobility to these new trains.
What I find incredible is that the people who designed these trains could have built in an automated door extension that would roll at stops and bridge the gap between carriage and station platform.
Goodness sakes, this is not a new technology, because you see this tech on many types of new trams and trains.
Jen, keep up the good work and thanks for looking out not just the able-bodied, but all of us.

Thanks for doing this video Jen.
You are spot on with the level boarding thing. Liverpool sorted this out. London is failing it's disabled passengers.
The big problem is that the platforms are not the correct height for sliding step trains. In Liverpool they actually shut lines and ripped out platforms prior to buying 777 trains. In London the train operating companies are not pushing for that to happen and the Mayor of London is unable to force it to happen.
The other thing that is a big problem with level boarding in London is that both Thameslink and Crossrail raised up platforms in the core of London...instead of lowering the train hight to the standard platform height. In a country where trains run from one area to another area, we can not have one height for Central London and a different height for Liverpool. It will cost a lot of money to fix Thameslink and Crossrail. And we can not change every other platform instead of fixing those platforsm.

Nice to see Network Nathan taking a ride on the Class 701 Arterio. I actually think that South Western Railway will allow to introduce more Class 701s in service in the new year and to allow the Class 458/4/5s that have been converted.
That could perhaps operate them on the Alton line. With the Class 450 and Class 444 Desiros to continue operating them on the Portsmouth Direct line.

No level boarding is a nightmare for everyone regardless of ability. I kind of stepped of an Azuma at a station in Scotland with a heavy wheeled case and small rucksack and fell due to height and gap. I fell to ground and my arm and small rucksack fell between the platform edge and the train. Lucky I reacted fast and did not injure myself bad except bruising and somehow i still had a grasp of my now broken rucksack by one strap. I used trains for years all the time mostly without luggage and never did that before.

I was quite surprised when I visited the UK back in February and the only level boarding trains I saw the whole time were on the tube. I also noticed that the UK doesn't seem to have standard platform heights. That might be about the only thing the US does well train wise, uniform platform heights of either 8 inches for low boarding or 51 inches for level boarding, which means all level board US trains are step free.

Glad these are rolling out on more than just the Winsdor line. I was on the first 701 working from Windsor to Waterloo (albeit from Staines, 2 stops west of Feltham) earlier this year, as I only found out it was happening at about the time the train passed westbound on the first Waterloo to Windsor working. They're nice, and I much prefer a 2+2 with wide aisle (as per these) over a 3+2 and a tight squeeze (as per the Greater Anglia 720s), given a fixed seat width.
It'll be sad to see the 455s go, although they're not that great for the Reading service taking 83 minutes from Waterloo, and the fact they're not great capacity-wise, as shorter vehicles (i think) as 4+4 forming an 8-car train. There's a reason SWT got the 2-car 456s, for increasing to 10-car on the busiest routes, except they went 2+ years ago now.
Did you see Jago Hazzard at the event? His video beat yours out, although he doesn't talk to the camera so I guess it'd be easier for him to edit quickly.

Regarding what you were saying about level boarding which I agree 100% with you on I'm hoping that these Class 701's are amongst the last of their generation not to have level boarding, I know Southeastern have said they would like level boarding in their Networker replacement fleet.
In a ideal world it would be great if the DfT would say that all new trains ordered have level boarding although it will be tricky for thing like the Elizabeth line because the trains meet the platform height in the core which I don't believe is the standard height so that's baked in without some very expensive work in the future

I understand SWR is going to be the first franchise to fold into "GBR" (in 2025) , which might be interesting as the Govt (Beyond "operatator of last resort") struggles, even with Peter Hendy's speaking of positive views. in the finance and operation of a (profitable) passenger service. with more London Commuting that the other ones thus far. Things like actually paying for, and the indebtedness of, the rolling stock and stations of the SWR network revert to the Govt Balance Sheet, along with a supposed stronger relationship of train operations and permanent way maintenance and enhancement. we shall see if this does deliver better value, for the passenger and the taxpayer. I doubt we will get though a useful evening half hourly from Hook to London which would be handy for me compared to the present hourly
