First did it in 1981. Class 37, MkI carriages, semaphore signals and single line tokens to be exchanged at passing loops. Bicycles in the guards van and lots of German tourists. Happy days!
Such a charming, happy video from one of the best presenters on TH-cam. The enthusiasm you show bubbles off the screen and the knowledge is always presented as if in a chat in the carriage. The trip was highly enjoyable.
Great video as always! Altnabreac - its an extremely complicated situation. Scotrail/Network Rail are in dispute with the owners of the Station Cottage over access to the station, to the extent where the owners of the cottage have been arrested by the BTP! Recently, all the signage from the station has been removed, so I can't imagine it'll reopen any time soon which is gutting as its on the list of stations I want to visit.
Lots of material on TH-cam about the Altnabreac situation. The owners were in court again last week but haven’t posted. This was failing to pay the court costs of the previous owners who took them to court and won their case, but they haven’t paid up. They only post material which suits them. They have also set up a GoFundMe page. A lot of people are very critical of them, the way they treat NR/Scotrail staff/neighbours and frankly incredible claims they make in their posts. One of the owners was a former detective in Manchester but left after 12 years, and later went missing, although she says she didn’t. They are in dispute with NR and also with EE over a mast nearby as well. Very sad situation and one entirely brought about by themselves who failed to understand what they were buying, that there is a separate legal system in Scotland and living in a very remote part of the country, especially in winter, means being part of a community where people help out each other when necessary, is very important. Through their actions, they are shunned by their neighbours and, most probably, will lose their home to rising legal costs and return back to England, hopefully the wiser.
Did it in 2006 and still vivid remember Helmsdale to Thurso. That is a wild, wild part of this planet. I have done every single Scotrail route, short and long. This one is in my top 3. Edit: Thurso too is a great place. I stayed over night and walked the beach almost to Scrabster. Great two days of my life.
Oh my days! I have NEVER seen Inverness Station that empty, and I have been there pretty early in the morning! I have got to do that journey one day - it is so beautiful. (And I heard that "nae bother" before you had your Greggs - nicely done 😀)
Living down 'ere in the south, the far north lines took some doing, to cover and I did Kyle, Wick Thurso over two days, staying in Inverness. At least I had the benefit of the catering trolley. £28 (senior rail card) return is great value for over 300 miles of travel to Wick/Thurso. Thank you G for sharing your video about Thurso because I didn't have enough time to stop there but spent an hour in Wick.
Remember the trains used to split at Georgmas Junction with one portion going to Thurso and another portion going to Wick . Was up there in the summer of 1986
@@09weenic Correct. A class 26 (in 1979/80) was stabled at Georgmas Jcn for this purpose. Sometimes each portion would only be a couple of coaches - but more in Summer and when demand needed it!!
Another great video! Travelled up to Orkney for a friends' wedding a couple of months back. Stayed at that Premier Inn then took that ferry across. Thurso is a great wee town and it's a 10/10 trip across to Orkney, definitely worth doing! The Thistly Cross cider on tap on the ferry probably helped 😂
Yes, I agree . I've seen the bit up to Invergordon myself (I needed something to do while waiting for the train to London operated by Caledonian Sleeper ) and that was as far as I deemed sensible with the time I had . I've heard by so many that it gets so much better on the bit that gets very few trains a day.

A lovely video that brought back happy memories! We stayed in Inverness for a week in 2011 and went to Thurso on the first train of the day, and then by bus to John O'Groats (another hour). We had a couple of hours there while the bus went on the return trip to Thurso and back. We caught the last train back to Inverness - a long but enjoyable day. Later in the week, we went to Kyle Of Lochalsh on the train, then by coach to Portree on the Isle of Skye, and came back(!) - another lovely trip and another long day!
@@GLovesTrains Although we caught the bus from very near the station in 2011, GOOGLE says it now appears to be a no. 80 bus from Olrig Street in the town centre. You'll have to go again!
I went up to Wick and Thurso as part of my road trip to the far north in 2020, really quite a stunning part of the country that gives off such a different vibe to the rest of Scotland. Next time I visit I definitely plan to come by train :)
All the lines around Inverness are fantastic for the scenery as you found out I'm sure G, think my favourite was the Kyle line that's got plenty of that flowing water, thanks for a beautiful Vblog 👍🤗

You've hardly got into Scotland if the furthest north you travelled is Edinburgh, well worth getting further north and west. Though winter up there can be very cold.

Beautiful views. I miss travelling on this line. That, and the friendly office, were two of the great things about my time as an Agency Temp in Internal Audit at Caithness District Council. Inverness Train Station has changed since those days. And in those days they used to have a unit at Georgemas to do the Georgemas to Thurso shuttle.
I enjoyed that but as someone who lives at the north end of the line I do feel some of the comments are a wee bit romanticised. The reality is that it takes nearly 4½ hours to get down to Inverness. For much of the year the journey, or a large part of it, is done in the dark with nothing to see out of the windows and so there is only a rather bleak carriage interior to stare at. Not having a catering trolley is all too common and on my last journey down I was the only passenger on board when we departed so there wasn't even anyone to have a blether with. I am very grateful for having a rail service but the difference between using it as an essential service as opposed to a once-in-a-lifetime, bucket list sort of journey is stark.
The Far North Line is awesome. I wanted to go ever since seeing it on All The Stations and had everything planned and paid for in March 2020 but there was some bug going around 🙄 Finally got there in May 2023, stayed for a long weekend in that very convenient Premier Inn and visited Wick and Scrabster too. You really should stay over in Thurso, you can see Orkney from the beach. Also there’s a really good chippy 😀
Stayed in Thurso 3 times back in late 2018, early 2019 whole working at Dounreay nuclear plant, stayed in a b&b and the Y-not inn i think it was. Not a bad little town.

Excellent vid. I've never taken a train to Thurso (always have to drive), but I shall do now. PS If you eat a Greggs on a train, you need to carry a wee hoover! x
I did this journey in September to go to Orkney. It was wonderful, the train was nowhere near as quiet as your ride, though, cla-thunk cla-thunk the whole way. The challenge returning from the Orkney is getting the morning train out of Thurso. On weekdays there is no bus that meets the ferry in a timely fashion and the taxis are taking the kids to school. There is insufficient time to walk to the train station. If you want to do it, book a taxi way in advance. The option I took was waited a short hour and to the bus back to Inverness. The route followed the coastline south so it was scenic and well worth it. Overall it did not take much time and I was able to get my bus onward to Ft William arriving there just 1 hour later than if I had been able to take the train.
Great video thanks, Only been as far north as Inverness and It's hard to believe there is another almost 4 hours journey time north, will have to do it one day .
Brilliant video G, I'd love to do the far north route someday, the views look amazing. Nice to see the most northern point of mainland Britain is a beach as well, I do love a good beach. :)
You are obviously the type who really appreciates a good view. Let me recommend a couple of other lines in Scotland, if you haven't already experienced them. 1) West Highland line that travels over the Glenfinnan Viaduct (the scene from the Harry Potter films, or so I am told). 2) the East Coast mainline between Aberdeen and Edinburgh on a Spring or Summer's morning.8:20 Cross country service is probably the best. Please note that the 8:20 Cross country service that starts at Aberdeen is the longest route in the UK, stopping at a whopping 45 stations before arriving into Penzance after 9:30 PM. It's nice to see someone as young as yourself that also has the correct level of maturity for which to enjoy these journeys.🤝👍😊
this takes me back to when I did this journey nearly 6 years ago (although not so early in the morning). Should have gotten in around 2200, but there were signalling issues near Helmsdale and ended up getting in after 2300. Was absolutely shattered but it was an enjoyable journey
I have been at Inverness Railway Station and it is pretty interesting. Next to that I also visited the Invershin Viaduct, which crosses the Kyle of Sutherland and was built in 1867/68. Nice video by the way.
Fab scenery. Given you and Jen are so keen on water, you clearly need to do a scottish ferries trip and go out on some CalMac ferries. How about Oban to Barra, up the iles to Stornaway by bus and little ferry and back to the main land via Skye or Ullapool. Days of fun and the empty long beaches on Harris are amazing.
Great video I did it a couple of years ago, stoppped off at Brora for a few hours amazing beach there And I spent 2 nights in that premier inn Well worth a visit

Happy one year membership to you 🎶!
Excellent vid. I've never taken a train to Thurso (always have to drive), but I shall do now. PS If you eat a Greggs on a train, you need to carry a wee hoover! x
Haha definitely seems that way! 🤣
"Blackpool Towers" 😂
Thanks for the vlog G, definitely beautiful water up there, was there any mountains past Inverness!!😎🚃🚃🇬🇧
Yeah there were a few hills n that 😀
Excellent vlog!Have not ventured beyond Inverness. One day hopefully as it looks like a beautiful ride upto Thurso!
Thanks, its so beautiful!
Would have been fun to go to Wick. And take a ferry out to the islands. And... Too much to see in a short trip but very very nice! Thanks!!!
Will deffo have to go back up there, thanks Kristi 😀
Thanks for letting me know about that! That bus route sounds lovely 😀
Great video thanks, Only been as far north as Inverness and It's hard to believe there is another almost 4 hours journey time north, will have to do it one day .
4 hours of total beauty
Gorgeous as always!
Magic that thank you. Looks super! Paul
Cheers Paul 😀
Great video G, they'a was some lovely views
Thanks!
Brilliant video G, I'd love to do the far north route someday, the views look amazing. Nice to see the most northern point of mainland Britain is a beach as well, I do love a good beach. :)
Gotta love a good beach!
Most northerly point on mainland Britain is dunnett head, a little to the east of thurso. It is certainly not a beach.
I did this in the summer, to Wick. What a train journey!
Brilliant!
A good example of Mansplaining. She's a smart cookie, yer ken.
Thanks, I'd love to ride both of those! Need to get a good price on that XC ride 😀
Fantastic Video G I Enjoyed It Thanks For Posting 😊
Thanks!
Wow, that’s a stunning trip G
This has to be one of the top 5 routes in the UK as far as scenery goes. You have to do the Ferry though, we'd all enjoy a tour of the Islands 😁
Agreed, and yes it's on the to-do list 😀
this takes me back to when I did this journey nearly 6 years ago (although not so early in the morning). Should have gotten in around 2200, but there were signalling issues near Helmsdale and ended up getting in after 2300. Was absolutely shattered but it was an enjoyable journey
Hope you got to see the views that late! 😀
@@GLovesTrains If I remember rightly it started to get dark around Ardgay at the tip of the Dornoch Firth - but there were some great views.
The Far North Line is a lovely scenic route but the Kyle of Lochalsh is even better but that for another day! Great Video G
Haha we'll see about that! 🤣 thanks Cyber
Kyle to Inverness ok for tourists but for locals a pain in the backside , it takes so long to get there , gets up to the dizzy heights of 35 mph
I have been at Inverness Railway Station and it is pretty interesting. Next to that I also visited the Invershin Viaduct, which crosses the Kyle of Sutherland and was built in 1867/68. Nice video by the way.
Great to hear, thanks!
Hi G, I like your videos and I wish you all the best. From Ianwood ❤️❤️
Thanks a lot 😀
Great video. You're the best 😊
Thanks 😊
Fantastic video Stunning views
Cheers!
Ooo sounds absolutely beautiful!
Great video
I did it a couple of years ago, stoppped off at Brora for a few hours amazing beach there
And I spent 2 nights in that premier inn
Well worth a visit
Thanks, glad to hear!
You just make the day better.
Aw thanks 😊
Really awesome 👏
Aw Wow Nice Video About Your Train Trip To Thurso With ScotRail GLove
Thanks!
I wonder if people from Dingwall are called Dingwallies?! Great video yet again with more places I never heard of ! You should definitely get that Ferry, get a bird book too loads of rare or rarish birds up there! Have a great week!
Haha thanks, I've never done bird spotting before!
"Dingwallers" are actually gudgie coffs or gadgie coffs
