What the hell... I literally searched "How to play like Thundercat" a few hours ago and was disappointed I couldn't find any video and then suddenly you upload this video. What kind of magic is this?!?!
Thundercat is a beast I like when he did that interview and talked about all his influences. I forgot what the channel was though probably reverb or something
Those fills discussed are some of the more on key stuff. I listen to alot of Thundercat and he likes to play “out” in a lotof these fills, It would be really nice to see a video that discussed what he is doing when he plays these “out” or “imposed scales” that seem to go out of key and then right back in. Thanks for this video. Great study material.
Ohhhh man that section from 2:57 to 3:05 is so awesome!! Ive been watching and rewatching and can’t figure out what you’re doing there, it’s soooo nice. Specifically that last thing, hammer on with the bass note?? Could you sprinkle that in next video you make? 🙏🏼
Man! This is great, but whats really great is that your making mistakes and not editing them out! So many videos edit the "practice" or human element out. Nice video. Do you have a transcription of this to print also?
Hey Anthony, have you ever broke down the solo(s) that end thundercats "is it love?" It is listed with Hadrien , too. It took me a while to figure out where the solo of thundercat ends and Hadrien's begins. I have often wondered if thundercat handed his bass over or something....that's a great track and great solos by everyone. Your thoughts?
super duper late to the party here but that interchange of solos is incredible… thundercat’s MTD is a lot more treble and high mid present and he has a more pentatonic oriented approach to soloing whereas hadriens ken smith burner has a notably darker tone and he is using more melodic minor language, the splicing of the two bass solos is used to great affect and it hurts every time hadrien mentions that him and thundercat have a project worth of songs together in the vault. the people need it!!!
This lesson, and your live version are phenomenal. You nailed it live. Is there any chance I could bug you for the chords to the middle break of this song?
@@user-jr2vh3mp3e Thank you, Are the chords built on Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C, D? This is my project today to get my head around this. I don't have much musical knowledge and this is blowing my mind.
@@thejone6067 The chords themselves don't really fall into any specific key. For example, there is a B major and a G minor, both of which have different notes from Eb minor, as well as from each other. The point is really just that they lead to Eb minor, which is the key that they solo in over it for the most part. The fact that the chords are all weird like that is really just because it sounds cool. There probably isn't some deep music theory for why they chose those specific chords, it's probably that he just wanted to have.a progression that sounded harmonically complicated or "trippy"
I'm more of a kinetic learner so I wish that I can see your fingers on the frets better. Would help if the cam was closer to the neck. Thanks for sharing.
How to play like...Allan Holdsworth? Remember when the guitar players did all the fast noodling and the bass player just held it all together from the bottom...and still got the chicks?
I'm old, I think it's the way it's supposed to be at least 85% of the time. Let your Guitar-Player noodle. We are the rock and the fortress of the groove.
Can some one tell me the scales i need to know in order to jam out to this song? Please! I play guitar but i love this video and wanna play along to the song! Thank you!
At a basic level you can just use Ebm pentatonic. But you could try using different pentatonics for each chord. Also sometimes I jump from Ebm pent to Eb mixolydian. I’m still working this out too though.
@@zDelirium right, I'm just not used to that right hand style. I've been playing around with the bassline on Vulfpeck's Disco Ulysses, definitely sounds like a similar style.
hey man im begging you to send me a message that has the exact fingerings for the root chords cause i cant find them anywhere it would be a huge help cheers

Anthony does that a lot.... it's where you're meant to be. ;) We find this dude for a reason.
Thank you ,Thundercat for 4 string!!!:-)

luc moutin that sounded magical
I can hear the Jaco in his style
Yes! Gotta have an octaver with an up setting, and dial in the auto-wah! Got me an OC-2 and Sub 'n' Up at different points in signal.
Can you make a lesson on how to mute strings/eliminate string noise effectively with the right hand?
You gotta make more videos on Thundercat
Your quick side-eye at the camera after that run at :26 got you a subscribe. Super work!
Great, simple pentatonic lick to learn, I will now spend 50 hours trying to play it that fast
Wish I could jam with you dude...you're amazing and inspiring. Thanks for the video
How to get the bass tone like thundercat?
NGOFI sounds like envelope or wah effect
It's an envelope filter (auto wah) combined with a pitch shifted up an octave
He says exactly how he does it within the first minute of him talking
I don't know waht your talking about
this randomly popped up and in my head i was like “its not possible so chill with those claims” but you did great man
Thanks so much for that lesson, i love this unique way than thundercat uses his bass, thanks to show this study of this great bassist
Thundercat is like that chill, cool guy in your class that would be able to talk with everyone and not be an asshole to anyone.
I never clicked on a video so fast before in my life lol! Thank you Maestro Anthony.
Faustino Garcia 😂😂😂 cheers man!
Don’t know if I enjoyed more the clear explanations the crazy chops or the dude’s coolness!!
Really appreciate you slowing down the fills that is a great initial practice strategy
That was godly my dude
i feel like i got a little better just by watching this?!
Practice is the only secret, ask Mono Neon, literally practicing rn prolly
Gonna woodshed this all week thanks Ant. Putting in my request for a mononeon lesson soon
Thanks so much for this! Very few people are this well versed this many styles of bass playing thanks sir!

Great stuff man, im predominantly a guitarist so imma learn the style on guitar, might have to break out the bass and have a go as well 😁

So very impressive!🤩🤩🤩
Thanks for the great video bro! Could you please state what pedals you are using? The bass sounds awesome, great tone!
Octaver above ? Can the OC 2 do that or is it a newer pedal ? Thanks for the funk lesson !
Atelier No it doesn’t. The micropog from Electro Harmonix does octave up and down. I’m not sure of any other stomp box pedals that can do both.
@@AnthonyMuthurajah Tc Electronic Sub n Up does both also . Another great lesson. Cheers
Thanks
Jo! The Mooer Octave Pedal ist really cool and can do both- upper and lower octave! I know it from Evan Marien and it’s more than nice

What method does he use for soloing?
woah

south indian 4 stringed thundercat!
Should I get a multi-effects pedal or an auto-wah and octaver on their own?
In my experience having seperate pedals is way more versatile and easier to work with. You can do a lot with a multi effect pedal tho
