I’m very impressed with how close your overall bass line was to his. Excellent job! This was a very interesting video. I’d like to see more featuring other artists as well.
@@silencedones4421 yeah no one before you ever thought a video could be faked. Is it hard work to be so insightful? And from your mom's basement no less. Dude, in 3 takes you got like 80% of the way there?! I'd be over the moon. It also took major balls to do it live in front of the camera like that. Kudos.
You should feel absolutely proud of your bassline. Being able to come up with a sound that was pretty darn close to Thundercat's in such a short time speaks to your flexibility.
I love Thundercat's looks and personality. He was amazing in Suicidal Tendencies, he has titanium bones in his back (his bass is a boat anchor), and is music goes into the weird side of R&B which makes it easier to get into for outsiders 👏👌
It sounded great. The fact that your baseline had such similarities shows how much experience you have and how good your ear is. And also, hell yes to more thundercat videos!!
i do enjoy myself watching 10 minutes of a man crying ngl, wouldve been a win either way also thank you for making me listen to bohemian rapsody for the first time, absolute eye opener
I love that pro bassist Josh is playing a Squier for this vid. It's taken me such a long time to realize that price does not equal quality/playability/sound/etc. Since the late 90's, overall instrument quality has improved so much that you can find some really amazing "beginner-to-intermediate" level instruments and still some clunker "pro" instruments. The variability in styles, human physiques, and desired tones so often bridges the gap in areas that affordable instruments are seen as deficient. In fact, just yesterday I picked up a bass I put together from parts back in high school, and was blown away by how much something that has basically zero resale value still rocked so hard. \,,/, TL;DR: Don't impulsively buy that shiny new piece of gear on the internet; wait until you've tried it out with your own hands/ears and compared it to something you already like/own to decide.
That is all true, but (to me) it felt he was struggling to make smooth hand transitions between the low and the high notes (and note: he has great technique and large experience). In this regard, a 6-string bass would be better for if you want to make chops like Thundercat's but not hurt your fretting hand in the long run. (There are some companies that make solid 6-string basses in the same price range as this video's.)
I love the concept, it would hit different if we also hear the bass less version at the beginning with you. So we forget what the original bass is and then "discover" it at the end
You and Thundercat have a big thing in common, y'all both make me want to pick up my bass right now and get to playing. I can't hear anything by Thundercat without immediately wanting to try it, despite knowing he's well out of my league. Y'all are both bass-ed, I love it!
Not a bassist or even learning bass (just a weirdo who loves to see artists work) and happened to find your video - super impressed! I'd love to see more of this kinda thing! ❤️
This is different style of video but I really really like it coz we get to see your brain work and figure things out. In the beginners mind, there is so many little things to pick up/be curious about, you can't imagine how much a person can take away and learn from style.
This is probably the best video I've seen from you, and I've been a fan and subscriber for years. You've definitely helped me as a beginner bassist and I'm now at the point where I'm crafting lines and playing open mics and this is again a helpful example for that mindset. I liked your line and your analysis of it in comparison to Thundercat's. Can't wait to see more videos like this!
I want to add my vote to the multiple people who have stated this Josh. This is a great learning experience in multiple ways. Would love to see you do this with other artists as well.
Actually a pretty good execution, considering the performance stress of the challenge. Personally, the coolest baselines I write always come to me when I'm in the zone, alone, with zero pressure or distraction, and when I don't give a rats ar$ about making mistakes. I just play whatever the hail I want or feel. That's step one for me. Step 2 is I just keep doing this until I fall into THE groove the song tells me it wants, usually by mistake. But I know it when I hear and feel it. Finally, step 3 after I've got the groove dialed, I do Note arrangement and cleanup. figure out which notes don't belong and which do.
Sounded different, felt the same. Awesome video, great format, great seeing a pro be challenged, have doubts, make mistakes; explain the breakthroughs.
This is a really cool video! Seeing a really good bassist like Josh work out a bassline is inspiring - no one has it all worked out on the first try but as a beginner I was so elated to see sometimes everyone just has to fall back on the pentatonics. Plus it helps demystify the process a bit. Looking forward to more.
Gotta say your video is crisp and the editing is fresh but subtle and not overdone, me like! These type of challenges are always fun, but for me it's hard with limited music theory knowledge (I think). So it's good to see someone try this, who knows actually what he is doing! 😅
I dug it! i've never heard of Thunder cat until now, and I'm a fan from this point on lol. I was humming along as you were playing, and we thought of doing a lot of the same things lol. It was pretty cool.
After listening to both the original and yours, I personally think that your version is WAAY better. Loops the video and abuse the replay button, I will.
I dig it. I have never heard this song or of the Thundercats (thanks for playing this because I now dig them)...however, I felt both versions (yours and his ) were great in their own way. Thanks for posting this. It encourages one to step outside their comfort zone.
This is incredibly valuable for those people who are attempting to create an original bass line. 3 times a year is my recommendation. THANKS AGAIN for all you do brother !
I don't know why we never heard you compose before, it was very funny and inspiring to listen to. I think you shoud do more videos listening to music without the bass and improvising it.
Love the educational take on this. Love the post listening analysis of what you could learn from the original line to improve your own compositional techniques. Great bassline ideas for having to write/record on the fly.
I actually think that your bass line is pretty cool! I was actually impressed how close it was to original. Congratulations! Only on 3 tries looks very impressive to me! 👏🔥
Way to challenge yourself mate. It’s inspiring to me (a beginner/intermediate level player)to see that there is always more to learn, even for the experts. Great video.
It's all about the feel and genre... this would be a no brainer for me to come up with as opposed to some heavy metal or rock stuff which I don't listen to often
Too cool for school, Josh! I loved watching your creative process as you worked your way through this very funky and complex song. Again, I so appreciate the Beginner to Badass course for getting me into bass playing. Seeing you challenge yourself with something difficult inspires me to keep going!
Great job on creating your own take of Funny Thing, Josh. You did a fantastic job!!! Insane that this is your first video on Thundercat. That dude inspired me to care about Bass in tracks more than ever before from his talent alone. Keep on rockin' in the Bass world ✌🏼

I've always been stoked to be learning bass from you in BTB, but this proves to me I picked the right teacher. I'm excited to keep going and hopefully have command of the instrument like this.
Honestly, I feel like both interpretations were beautiful. This is what I love/hate about music is that the possibilities are literally endless. Also, this challenge is so much fun to watch!!!
I enjoyed watching this, because coming up with new bass lines has always been really hard for me and this has given me some good ideas about the thought process. A lot of it really is self-doubt on my end though. Well done!
You just displayed why my daughter loves you as her bass teacher. If I get to cover this I'm blending both your lines... amazing more of these types of videos please
Your line was very good! It had more of a Daft Punk feel in my opinion which worked as well. But as you said, Thundercat wrote a great line for a Thundercat song. Imagine that. He’s a beast!
I have no idea who Thundercat is, but it sounds pretty funky although not my cup of tea. The best thing is just watching you talk through your process of trying to figure out an acceptable bass line to this song. That’s the real value for me as a bassist. Thanks
The best part of your videos besides honesty is the fact you use basses that are affordable. Squier, Sterling, and Sire basses are not to be overlooked. Also I personally need to look into effects and a better amp. And a fretless, an 8, and 12 string. Oh no, GAS man is getting me 😅
Please consider making more of these! Id love to watch more but cant find much more Bass specific ones. Difficult to recommend a song but really enjoyed this. Thanks!
In all fairness Josh, you nailed it pretty dam close too, your choice of effects was spot on! Im not a thundercat fan, but you definitely rocked a pretty good groove!
Great job Joshercat! I like the original better but that's just because it feels more solidified into a core idea - you were doing some different stuff that was cool, and I think with a bit more time you'd have finessed it into something that fits just as well. That's what I like about the Drumeo challenges I've seen, it starts with people basically in the dark but each time around they refine it into something that stands on its own Honestly you could probably make a series like this! It's teaching the improv and writing process, and explaining why you're making the choices you are (the subtitles like "trying this" then "nope don't like it" were great). Throwing yourself in the deep end like this makes it relatable too!
Which bass line did you like better, mine or Thundercat’s? ⚡🐱
I’ve listened to that song so many times it was kind of refreshing to hear the new bassline lol
Man you got really close to it though, not gonna lie…
I'm going to sit on the fence and say I liked both of them 😎
Your play cut through the mix better...both versions were very good.
You should make a series of trying to guess the bass lines of songs you’ve never heard. 👍
