Between this and The Thing, it's crazy how Carpenter got no respect at the time for movies that have gone on to be considered classics.
Sadly yes, it seemed so many of his movies weren't appreciated until well after the fact.

Well, They're cult classics. Halloween is probably his most mainstream accessible movie. The Thing and They Live, while amazing, are largely ignored by mainstream cinema outlets.
Critics may not have respected carpenter but critics are shit. They dont seem to get their job is to direct people to the films theyll personally like.. rather they want to fit into their scene of.. loser idiots. I think most people who saw it realised how brilliant this and the thing are.
I've only ever seen one movie by him I don't like (Prince of Darkness) and even that one is ok.

I'm not particularly familiar with, shall we say the "oeuvre" of Adam Sandler, but I was aware that he was keen on getting product placement in his films. I was astounded as to just how enthusiastic he was after seeing that Subway scene.
I'm pretty sure it's illegal to do that on British TV
man you forgot to mention the most improtant thing about the alley brawl scene: its a metaphor of cognitive dissonance and how its hard to make people SEE they're been lied to.
There's also the important element that there are several people hanging out with the aliens, meant to show that the upper class and colonists use some select subjects to elevate--either to get them to, or because they already do, support the status quo.

I would add that it is also a metaphor of the elites pitting the masses against each other as yet another form of control and manipulation. As it is said in my mother tongue: 'Pueblo contra pueblo'.

The fight between Piper and David is both awesome and brutal. I absolutely LOVE it.
Too bad this film is so underrated; one of Carpenter's greatest films and definitely his most subversive one. It really comes as no surprise to me why this film is rarely aired on TV and isn't as readily available as a lot of crappy films are.
Because this film exposes the truth is the reason it's hardly on TV. Carpenter will go down as one of the most subversive directors of all time.
It's anti globalist and liberal communist scummy elites can't stand poor people not obeying. Of course they would hate this movie with a passion. It slaps them right in the face since it's comparing them to aliens. It wasn't the republicans who caused all this mess, but liberals in both parties. They're called rinos when republican, republicans in name only.

This movie was way way ahead of it's time, which might explain why some people didn't really get it when it first came out. But it's more relevant now than it's ever been. By the by I'm loving this channel more with every review I watch. Finally someone is speaking my language. Keep up the great work man, looking forward to watching more reviews.

Carpenter is easily one of my favourite, if not sole favourite, movie directors. Guy is brilliant, and anytime I bring up favourite movies ever, there is ALWAYS a Carpenter movie mentioned.

Funny...I was to unnerved as a child to watch "They Live" all the way through, so the first time I heard a derivative of that line was in "Dazed and Confused". "I only came here to do two things, kick some ass and drink some beer. Looks like we're almost outta beer."
Interesting reasoning behind the name of the main charterer.
Because, "Nada" also means "hope" in most Slavic languages.

They Live will always be a very important movie to me. An absolute gem. It's got such a deep meaning to it .

Honestly, I think part of the reason I like this movie so much is BECAUSE it looks so cheap. It doesn't look like a movie, it looks like reality. For a film about alien invasion, there's no big set pieces or bright lights, and that makes it just seem so much more plausible.
This is one of the greatest movies of all time, and I agree with Piper. It isn't fiction. The 'aliens' may not be from another planet, but certainly from a different ideology.
I saw this movie once, and only once, back in 1989. I remember thinking it was an OK film, but nothing special.
I just watched it again after watching this review and finally realized just how epic this film is.

Same here. When I was a kid, I thought it was ok. Then 5 years ago, I watched it again after many years, and it's now one if my favorite movies. It's a smart film.
Nemo & Wraith - I think COY is making a joke as THEY LIVE is about all the aliens subliminal messages making US (earthlings) being the "consumers". I got the joke.

this movie is awesome. one of the best movies ever made. and for good reason it is a cult classic. the story and message of this movie is still valid for todays world even more than it was back then.

I had read awhile back that there was talk of a remake. More of an adaptation of the original story of a guy awaking from a hypnotic trance at a magic show suddenly seeing the aliens all around us.
If a put a band together, I want to call it "The Nada Movement"! Can I? :D

There is no such thing as a "bad" John Carpenter movie. They may be meh/decent at worst, aka Ghosts of Mars, or HEAVILY misunderstood, Escape from LA. Point being there is no flat out groan inducing, eye rolling, John Carpenter movie.

sadly, that was real. They did a few like that for Bing and...Chevy I think (some car company I don't remember off the top of my head) but the audience started getting sick of it and they backed off
Amazing. It looks like total parody. It looks more like the adverts in waynes World than something that is supposed to blend into a show.
The same thing is happening in games. I don't mind if it makes sense in the scene and isn't out of place or blatant. Sometimes though, they bombard you with it, making it a focal point and it is ridiculous. I just saved the world from giant robots and nuclear war, good thing I have my Doritos and Mountain Dew, I'm exhausted. Speaking of games, it was cool seeing Piper and David in Saints Row 4 kicking alien ass.
I was watching that episode and I actually thought they'd gone to an actual commercial starring the cast of the show.
I used to work at Subway back in like 2005, it's fast food disguised as healthy alternative food.
Hell there are commercials out there that are disguised as TV shows. There was no subtlety in that Subway scene at all.

I mean the Happy Gilmore Subway joke was more subtle and funny then that scene.
I absolutely love John Carpenter! Probably my favorite director, a guy who genuinely wants to make a good movie with the resources he has instead of spending $300 million making a toy commercial. 'Halloween', 'Assault on Precinct 13' and 'They Live' all prove a talented guy can make superb films for a few million dollars.
Are you going to cover 'Body Bags' at any point? I find it pretty underrated as horror anthologies go and not just because the man himself is introducing the segments.

It was good that Him and Keith David were able to get back together and reprise their roles in SR 4. That was a nice little segment of the game, and showed a lot of heart and dedication in an otherwise-absurd franchise.

Nostalgia from a time Hogan was the ultimate badass, pro-wrestling was real, and i was thoroughly emotionally invested in every film i saw, piece of crap or no.
Does anyone remember the mcdonalds billboards with black print on white backgrounds saying, I'm loving it! There were like 3 of those signs in the city I use to live in. Always reminded me of they live, and not to eat at McDonald's.
The new Emoji movie was nothing but an expensive commercial for Smartphones and apps. I can only imagine John Carpenter's thoughts on the matter.

Also, according to Piper, not only did Vince match Piper's pay for They Live, he offered him the WWF title for no less than one year, which would have made him even more money..lots more. He was smart to turn it down.
I came across this movie completely by accident a few years ago. Had no idea about what it was about but figured I'd give it a shot cause of the poster. Almost immediately I knew that it was a piece of magic. Loved every second of it. Surprisingly my dad had also never seen it so sent him a copy. I'm glad he got to see it before he died.

Oh man what a movie, just as good today as it was years ago. It made me feel so sophisticated when I was a teenager, like I totally got how it was a definitive 80's movie but also had this really valuable message. I can still remember the VHS box.
John Carpenter really is a god among men. They Live is just another home run.
John and Guilermo Del Toro are two of the trinity of what I call, Perfect Directors. These are people that while maybe the dont do blockbusters or have a HUGE library of films they did, they have one thing going for them. Their films are consistently good/entertaining and none of them are straight up "bad". The third person out of the Trinity would be Paul Verhoeven, best known for Starship Troopers and Robocop.
They live is one of my favorite films of all time :)

I wish I’d heard about this movie earlier in my life, it’s honestly such an incredible commentary on consumerism & humanity.
I wondered why the alley fight was even a thing while watching, but the main actor being a wrestler makes a lot of sense. I’d just assumed it was meant to show how humans at their core will always be primal beings that fight, yet will also team up/stick by other humans when needed, in order to contrast humanity to the aliens.
It just occurred to me that The Fly II was how I discovered your channel. I maintain to this day that it's one of the most fun movies I've watched.
The Bubblegum line was one I heard years before I even saw the film. Its a shame that most of John Carpenter's films are only seen as Cult films nowadays. If I remember, didn't the original short story end with what was the resistance massacre near the end of the film?

I was always excited when a Carpenter movie came out. The two Escape films, Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, this one. The man made some of the best films of all time. Even his "bad" ones were pretty neat and had some good concepts and characters.
This isn't only the best channel to spend your time watching on TH-cam... It's also the only channel that I try to actively watch every single video he made. An it has been a great decision.

One example why this movie is still good till this day: I have seen it more than 10 times and first watched it 20 years ago. My girfriend has never seen it. So we've changed that a couple of weeks ago. She stated, that she really loved this movie and felt, that it is so recent with its themes, that it could be easily released today and the story would still hold up without any changes. This movie was way ahead of it's time while also being spot on with it's themes when it was released. What a classic!
They Live is awesome, and another Carpenter triumph. That bit at the end you discussed about ads is so true, and makes this film even more significant.

This movie is amazing. I remember seeing it as a kid and being totally freaked out by the creepy alien faces. As a bonus it even has teleportation mixed in. Beat that "Jumper"!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees modern commercialism is worse than what was going on in the 80s. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of commercialism back then, but some people talk like that was 80s-specific(commercialism and materialism). They tend to judge that decade by it's vices, when those vices really haven't disappeared(and were probably dialed up significantly in the current time).
Frank Bautista I think it was in its early stages back then and is a full on beast now. Its next to impossible to avoid today.

Ah, to discover a classic movie recently now. It's the best, isn't it? I just saw for the very first time Brain Dead(or Dead Alive depending or where you are) about a year ago, before then I never even knew about it but it's a FANTASTIC movie! Fucking LOVED THAT movie! After watching it I wondered how in the hell I never even heard of it, not on TV, not from a friend, and then just happen to come across it on the internet by pure coincidence. Loved it.Awesome, awesome, movie. If you haven't seen it, you really should.
They Live is so close to reality most people have no idea....this movie tells so much truth about the dark cabal that run the world it's amazing it was allowed to be shown. Those that know will recognize so much truth and hidden messages in this movie. It's almost a documentary. Carpenter obviously knew so much more than he ever let on... people that think this is 'just a story' that he 'made up' are so mistaken... one of my all time favorite movies..
It is a work of fiction the source material is provided. It is imaginary, somebody made it up. Movies are not real. Neither is the black web, underground, all powerful, population control mafia, sports logo team.

You contradicted yourself there, perhaps a "Freudian Slip"? Movies by definition are stories, works of fiction, figments of the imagination made manifest. People can be easily fooled by how good a story is or that it fits into something they believe. In Italy, this is for real, there is a balcony, that you can go and visit, that is supposedly the one from "Romeo and Juliet". Thousands of people visit it. That is how gullible people can be.
A youtube commercial popped up in the middle of the reviewer complaining about how commercials pop up in the middle of what you're watching.
Saw this in theatre, was graduating high school that year then off to infantry training. The movie was similar to nothing else before. It was, in my opinion, upon release, one of the most original, quality movies I had seen to that point and it has remained so.
Hiring the homeless? Every time I hear something about Carpenter, he gets more awesome.
Now that is a true human being, better than most of the "Bourgeouis" upper class, elitist trash that work outta Hollywood, God Bless ya brotha.

That guy for the Subway commercial has far surpassed hotdog neck. He's moved up to pillow neck.
Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live, Escape From New York, In the Mouth Of Madness, The Prince of Darkness, Dark Star, The Fog, Village of the Damned, Christine, Ghosts of Mars (I'm prob the only one who actually liked this back when it came out) - this man has done more great films IMHO than any other director, except maybe Nolan or Tarantino. I'm biased, I know, but damn, Carpenter is a guarantee for a thoughtful and cult classic movie. Thnx for the additional insight!

Since I watch very little TV now I would never have seen that ad with in the show. I think They Live is more relevant now than ever. That movie to me is a masterpiece.

Great analysis. "You have to watch a commercial to watch a commercial." A very unique movie that engages all the people that I watch it with.
They Live is one of my favorite movies, and has been since I was a kid. I remember staying up with my brother to watch it one late Friday night so, so many years ago. As a kid, I loved concept behind the film. The concept of aliens hiding among us to manipulate our society. As I have aged and understand the world better, I now appreciate the message John was sending, and he hit the nail on the head with it.
One of my favorite movies that I remember seeing and being scared of as a child when I seen it late night on cable in the 90s. It always stuck with me but I had forgotten the name. Finally found it in 2008 on TH-cam and it's been my favorite since. Great video for a great movie =)
