As an engineer I really appreciate the level of detail you go in to on every review. Do not change the way you do videos, as so many reviewers do not go in to depth and detail like this and when your spending this much on a piece of kit, you really need this information.
Great video. Funny, I woke up this morning, wondering whey Tom will be reviewing this board and I turned on my PC and here it is! LOL! Was worth the wait. But I think I'll use the Asus z270 WS in my next build as I'm just going to be using my system mainly for gaming and some light to medium heavy video editing. And I don't think; from the reviews I've seen, that 6+ cores is really going to make a difference in gaming. And usually sometimes worse than a 4 core processor. And I really don't like that x299 4 core processor compared to the 7700k. But the expandibility is nice if you want that new platform and start out with a 4 core cpu and later down the road be prepared to add a higher core cpu when needed. Anyway, thanks again for another great video.
I went with an Asus Rog Strix X299 XE Gaming with an i7 7800x and hit 4.7Ghz pretty easy with volts just a touch over 1.25 totally stable been running for over a month on air and temps are good not to hot not to cold, no porridge but just right, Asus has definitely got it right with x299 running skylake......ABSOLUTLY ZERO VRM ISSUES
If I plugged in 2 m.2 nvme cards on one of the dimm slots do I get both to run at their fastest speed.. near theoretical speed? Or is it running them through the chipset not CPU? Looking for a motherboard that has the most m.2 slots that run through the CPU and not the chipset.
Bit of a daft question but does the pch cover (where the rog eye is) come with a protective clear film, as I purchased the rampage edition 10 when it came out and that didn't and the design bit on the pch had a big scratch on
Am I the only one who got a little chuckle out of "little white things" ? I guess we'll have to start calling them LWT's instead of LED's =P Great review and coverage, as always. =)
Hey Tom @OC3D_TV, is there any info on release date for the Rampage VI series yet? Been highly anticipating both the RVIApex and RVIExtreme for a while.
Hi, Tom. I know that there are also two delidding tools for the X299 processors. One is the famous "Delid Die Mate - X" from Der8auer, Germany, the other is called "Delid Master" from Japanese Company. You can search this on TH-cam. The Delid master is available in Japan but they don't ship it to other countries directly. You can ask someone to ship it to you if you are interested. One more thing that appeals me is that, the Delid Master tool is adjustable for those popular CPSs like SkyLake/KabyLake and new SkyLake-X/KabyLake-X. CPUs like 6700K/7700K/7740X/7800X/7900X are supported to be delidded with this tool.
Also, to be honest, my 1st video (uploaded) was my 7900X that was not delidded running @4.3GHz. There was a -3 AVX offset. I run it @4.0GHz with -3AVX applied with Prime95 28.1. The VRM temperature just simply hit 100'c. The processor kept stable at 90'c. It is not a good news. Now I have my CPU delidded and it can go to something like 4.5GHz. But tbh, it is a waste of money because it costs me $120 to delid it by silicon lottery. I am getting the EK Gigabyte motherboard water block. I will try to figure out the differences once I can water cool it.
OC3D TV yes, it'is. But btw I have done temperature comparison and I figured tge temp difference is about 15'c running AVX stress test at 4.0GHz. It's as what you mentioned in the video, a big step for cooling.
Before you got into the video, I was like cool. I love ASUS stuff. Then, I realized it was an X299 board. At that point, I looked at my imaginary wrist watch and said out loud, oh look what time it is.
Hey, when you d-lid a processor, what type of glue do you use to re-attach the die cover so you can attach your cooler block on it. And the glue should be easy to remove to re-paste the chip every 6 months to a year.
so what you are saying is that this mobo can overclock better than rampage extreme then? also i kinda just wanna use one of those GIANT aircoolers like be quiet dark rock 3 pro on a 7900x on the rampage extreme and i hope that will be okay, not really looking to get the perfect overclocks because i never really done it before but also thinking of buying a delidded and prebinned cpu
MoDRun pretty sure I can fine tune my overclock on my Ryzen 7 a little more. I have a feeling some of my voltages aren't quite high enough. I'd have to narrow it down though. I need to find a few different stress tests.
The power delivery on the Apex is superior to the Extreme as well as the power and electrical timings for the memory. The extreme is for showcase system builds and people who want to get the best looking and most feature rich X299 motherboard. The Apex is for performance and overclocking enthusiasts who care more about speed than anything else. The Apex also allows 4 m.2 ssds in raid 0 where as the Extreme would need a VROC card to do that.
i been goin between apex and rampage vi extreme but... 1 im probably just gona use a dark rock 3 pro air cooler on my cpu cos im not really into watercooling cpu unless i need to so apex might be wasted right there 2. i care about looks as a casemodder and both apex and rampage vi extreme seem to work in my case depending on how i finish the mobo tray. 3. dont care about memory speeds or ssd speeds because stock speeds seem to be just fine as is so apex seem useless to me at that point. so basicly from that im 80% leaning towards rampage vi extreme because i probably wont use the oc potential of apex and the oc on rampage extreme will be enough
MoDRun Then the extreme is probably better for you if spending $200 extra is ok. Of course I would recommend at least an AIO for any kind of overclocking on X299, but if you still want to aircool than a dark rock 3 is a great option.
i like doing a different style than other people and im having a 1080ti poseidon watercooled. and the cpu on dark rock 3 pro if possible because i dont have to worry about the pump dying since the gpu still has a fan on it and cpu is on air. what i would like to see is some kinda hybrid giant aircooling block like dark rock 3 plus a waterblock combo just like the poseidon.
John Athanassion 2 x 8 would be fine if you want to take advantage of dual channel. I might be wrong but a 4 x 4 kit would probably have the same result. The only way you'd have a different result is if you mixed different rams together.
You need to get a better cooler for doing the high end stuff... The quad core sky/kaby chips easily pull over 150w, you have to expect a 10 core chip to pull at least 2.5x that, you simply can't do that on a CPU with IHS. I should think your TR experience should show exactly that.
I would like to see a poll in order to know how many gamers game on LN2 as this is a 'Republic of Gamers' board, right?! So, my question is really how this board is gonna help the real gamer?
It's "zee" not "zed"; it's not "bee-tah" it's "bay-tah". Get it right, native Brits. You already screwed up by not having the balls to get on the ships and colonize America with the rest of the few awesome Brits there were. Don't continue screwing up by saying words wrong. You all could've been Americans and could be speaking properly right now, but no. You refuse to be corrected.
john smith lmao ya spanner english is not an american language .ye took the english language and had the neck to alter it and have your own dictionary. Why would anyone want to be a yank look at the state of it. Only one true master race still here Atlantis and its last remaining island of Ireland
"Potassum", lol, you mean K for Kalium right, atom number 19. But then again, it's not Sodium either, it is Na for Natrium. But thats an endless discussion between the english and american scientific world and the rest who uses the agreed upon Neo-Latin standard? Something like that :)
Well its not 8 lanes, or properly called channels. You would just have 2 dimms per channel, they share the channel. For XTREME overclocking, having only one dimm per channel allows higher and stable overclocks. You still get full quad channel memory support.
With 16GB DIMMs, if you need more get a different board. Besides, this board natively allows for NVMe RAID using any PCIe lanes running from the CPU. Notice the two DIMM.2 slots? The one near the IO uses lanes from the CPU. The other uses PCH lanes. Only downside is VROC only works with Intel SSDs at the moment.
Icemaker 0 coverage? I thought there was some coverage since its release. I guess I was wrong. Man I must be losing it because I could've sworn there was.
So why would I, or anyone, get this over a Crosshair VI Zenith which is 100USD more (or prime x399 which is cheaper by 100USD)and 1950X. 6 less cores and way worse mobo. X299 is a joke. RoboDog Asus release a lot more stuff dude. I will always try and review their premium kit. I've done other X299 boards if you look though and the tests results are always there. I treat all products the same way. Samples are limited with the other brands so can be difficult to get them.

Love the RGB implementation but wish they had added the "shield" that is on the Maximus VIII Formula.
DDR4 4000MHz and 4.7GHz and benchmark results please :D
And don't forget to congratulated der8auer on achieving this mile stone!
This one really makes me curious about the Extreme VI. Also, a Rushkit video showing the isolated board would be very welcome.
Got the Apex Z270 with a 7700K. Good too see the DNA is still as good as the first one!

Good review! Tiny Tom any word on the rampage extreme vi :))))?
Few weeks for me I think
Thanks m8!

Asus ROG Rampage VI Apex or X299 XPOWER GAMING AC??? (Just thinking about quality components
and good overclocking (not hardcore like LN2)
My asus Rog Rampage Vi apex`s onboard rbg doesnt work none of them light up what so ever anyone know why this might be?
Am I the only one who got a little chuckle out of "little white things" ? I guess we'll have to start calling them LWT's instead of LED's =P Great review and coverage, as always. =)
Hey Tom @OC3D_TV, is there any info on release date for the Rampage VI series yet? Been highly anticipating both the RVIApex and RVIExtreme for a while.
FirehouseHD I don't know anything yet. If I have this I would expect stores to have them in a few weeks
OC3D TV Hopefully! Had a hole starting to burn in my pocket
Hi, Tom. I know that there are also two delidding tools for the X299 processors. Why Intel still makes cheap thermal way...
I can get a tool easily but as explained in the video I would need another CPU - thats not so easy
OC3D TV yes, it'is. But btw I have done temperature comparison and I figured tge temp difference is about 15'c running AVX stress test at 4.0GHz. It's as what you mentioned in the video, a big step for cooling.

You don't, that is the point of de-lidding.
Can you push AMD to get you an EPYC system, so you can compare against threadripper?
so what you are saying is that this mobo can overclock better than rampage extreme then?
also i kinda just wanna use one of those GIANT aircoolers like be quiet dark rock 3 pro on a 7900x on the rampage extreme and i hope that will be okay, not really looking to get the perfect overclocks because i never really done it before but also thinking of buying a delidded and prebinned cpu

Tom when is the Rampage VI Extreme coming out???
"Got the minerals"
CLASSIC \o/
You can almost feel the governor that has been placed on CPU processing power.
On a quick different note, is it better to populate all ram slots vs 3,2 or 1 slot?
In pairs for dual-channel systems.
So my motherboard has 4 dimm slots and I want to populate them with 16gig of ram. So I should purchase (4) 4gig sticks or (2) 8gig sticks?
John Athanassion 2 x 8 would be fine if you want to take advantage of dual channel. I might be wrong but a 4 x 4 kit would probably have the same result. The only way you'd have a different result is if you mixed different rams together.
Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for you input. Greatly appreciated.
Do you need to overclock
Is it worth it I mean can you fully utilize the machine
Amithkumar BG I dunno if he can, but believe it or not there are workloads that exist that definitely can.
Am i the only one that always wonders how they power motherboards at events without cables plugged in?
and? When we will see the review with the delidded CPU?
They need to make a Black-Out edition, no LEDs completely black, void of all light,
like staring into a blackhole xD
you know when asus release the apex?
You need to get a better cooler for doing the high end stuff... The quad core sky/kaby chips easily pull over 150w, you have to expect a 10 core chip to pull at least 2.5x that, you simply can't do that on a CPU with IHS. I should think your TR experience should show exactly that.
Gorbaz The Dragon time to build my own water block. Lol
You forgot to mention something that may interest performance junkies: native support for bootable NVMe arrays using Intel SSDs and the VROC feature.
But Intel SSDs are a bit crap.
Steve Watson How are they crap?
Performance V competitors, Bang for Buck.
I wanted to see some performance comparisons of the Asrock boards. Specifically the Taichi series.
Asrock have not sent me any X299 boards
Why haven't you delided it already?
Lawrence Timme I'd need a second cpu to delid. I need to keep the original one as is to keep the graphs fair
The x299 soc and x299 oc formula is better so far. All the top scores on Ln2 are gigabyte or asrock
Lawrence Timme well duh, this literally just came out. Of course there aren't a lot of overclockers who have used this board.
no they have had this for ages XD there are loads of scores but they are last :P
It'll be nice to see a big comparison/shootout of all the 4-DIMM OC boards.
yes i agree
In the same vein, there is no apostrophe-K ('k) at the end of the word "nothing...'k".
Could you not use a pointer instead of using you hands, love the videos
Can I suggest you use a pointing device other than your finger.
I would like to see a poll in order to know how many gamers game on LN2 as this is a 'Republic of Gamers' board, right?!
So, my question is really how this board is gonna help the real gamer?
OMG 1:08 great thanks TTL now I have water all over my keyboard and shirt. hahaha
Overclock plz
*standby fire protection* in 3...2...1
Gone are the days of a unifying socket/platform for the users on both sides. Looks like AMD is back at it...and intel is just being...pre 2006 intel?
Core i9 = Pentium 4 EE housefire.
It's not "potassum" or "titanum", so it's not "aluminum".
Kiss our collective ring, Yanks - we're right, you're wrong:).

Yes, science changed it from Aluminum to aluminium because metals are 'ium'.
This isn't about English vs American, it's about Science vs arrogance.
why are you talking about these old x299 motherboards when x399 is the latest and greatest
James Mastroianni lol nice
well x299 was released prior to x399, so im not wrong
James Mastroianni because to ignore X299 would make me biased. Have to be fair.
im sorry, but if you think this was a serious comment, it isnt.
No one cares about AMD m8.
i want tom to put delta fans in all the headers :D
Diva Mage lol airplane engines
... Did Tom just do a dab... ?? o.O. Must have been a mirrage
Its called a spirit level @0:53
only 4 memory slots? wtf?
Noticed that aswell. I believe on their Z270 Apex board they only have 2, they say it's better for overclocking.
Well ya all the rampage boards are for extreme overclocking. The previous enthusiast rampage's have had the full 8 memory slots.
I choose the X99-M WS for this reason, having one slot per channel clean up the trace topology and makes it clock higher RAM speeds.
Well its not 8 lanes, or properly called channels. You would just have 2 dimms per channel, they share the channel. For XTREME overclocking, having only one dimm per channel allows higher and stable overclocks. You still get full quad channel memory support.

You must of noticed the views are down on X299 content , there is a reason for that Tom
bionicbert but if I stopped making X299 content that would make me biased. I'll keep reviewing both sides
No overclocking sad...
Loads of overclocking if you watch it
nice...pls 200k
0 x399 coverage on any channels since release
Ive got stuff planned. Just waiting on samples :)
Icemaker 0 coverage? I thought there was some coverage since its release. I guess I was wrong. Man I must be losing it because I could've sworn there was.
ArtisChronicles there is some coverage, but not that many people are doing mb reviews to begin with
I'm gonna make this simple. X399 please.
So why would I, or anyone, get this over a Crosshair VI Zenith which is 100USD more (or prime x399 which is cheaper by 100USD)and 1950X. 6 less cores and way worse mobo. X299 is a joke.
Also, this mobo seems very, very overpriced at 450USD. I have to guess it's cause of Intel, compared to the X399 boards which are better.
Can you review something not Asus? You look a bit unprofessional with all this Asus marketing.
I do have Asus motherboard and i am satisfied with it, but come on man!
RoboDog marketing? I review what I can dude. If Asus offers me a rog board early. I'm taking it!
Your content is vastly overshadowed by Asus products. Dont get me wrong, while you do great reviews, having so much Asus content is a bit questionable.

Kiss our collective ring, lol nice!!
Oh another asus product what a huge surprise. woohoo.
Veritas yawn.
Lol YE your telling me, yawn is right. still when your invited to asus headquarters to see advanced vega and run tests, it's no surprise you and asus are bum chums, gd 4 you, it costs you credibility but whatever, next video? an asus product perhaps, or a race chair maybe, or something with fan headers cause you get really excited about those. rofl.
Veritas bumchums? So having a good relationship and getting to play with unreleased kit is bad? FYI 2 other media were there that day too. I'm the only one that has a yt presence though
OC3D TV it's not a bad thing. Just keep your reviews quality and for the most part there's nothing wrong with having a relationship with a company. I think some people just associate it with being biased in favor of the company.
ASUS are biased towards Tom, more like. Other reviewers can't see his arse for dust! :-)
HAHAHAHA moist she loves it.
Fu
Shame its Intel crap...
More useless X299 motherboards. We only care about the X399 motherboards...
Detmer Truer words never spoken
YES! YES! YES!
X399 > X299!
But is it worth getting the x399 platform as the new buzz going around stating that AMD is about to file bankruptcy in 3 years or sooner. I'd hate to jump into that platform with no future support. And the Ryzen isn't gaining too much ground as many think it is.
i am pretty fine with mine x99. rampage extreme
@JA More FUD from "bad actors" on wall street.
i hear x299, im not interested anymore
First..but DON'T care:)
