- Sometimes, older "fatline" Playstation 2's can stop reading discs. This is due to the laser degrading over time. This video is just a quick guide on how to calibrate your laser so it works to its (almost) full potential.

13 years later, you’re goated for this!!! Fixed my issue.
Okay, so for those of you looking for a calibration wheel(white thing) on a model scph 50001 and not finding one, there are actually two of them. The rods that the laser slides on are lifted and lowered by these two rods. The circles that are punched in can serve as a guide post for where you are in terms of turning. There will be a reset point, where the slightly spiraling cylinders stop. This is the lowest point of each of them.
In fact this procedure is not a calibration. Laser diod gets older and loses it's power, these controls are roughly speaking the valves of 'amount of energy that powers the laser'. If you did it just remember, it's time to replace the laser unit in near future, it is supposed to die soon.
I was looking for a solution for so long. Now my PS1 games work on my PS2 again. You sir are a HERO! Thank you so much!!!
This worked perfectly fine with my PS2 slim which could still play DVD video but no games any more. First try turning the potentiometer screw labeled DVD about 45 degrees to the left did the job. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
"Eight screws which 'arr 'ere ere ere an ere"
LOL accent
it works! thanks man i just got gh 2 and i was so hyped to play it, but i saw that one of those screws wasnt moved and i moved it clockwise and it worked.
ear, ear, ear, and ear
lol
Papa Bear ikr he is such an idiot lmfao
I followed this guide and now my PS2 will read games again. Thank you sir.
I did that and movies on DVD's are finally working smoothly :D thank you !
Awesome video. Not sure if it was the laser or the laser arm, which helped more but laser arm was extremely loose. Thank you soo much for your help!!
thank you so much, been trying to get my ps2 working for hours and this worked like a charm!
Just done this today on my old fat ps2. The laser was sitting there jumping up and down (skipping) on retail discs at the inside of the disc while slowing the disc down then speeding up again and sometimes repeating this once or twice and taking about 30 - 40 seconds to boot a game and then reading properly after it did. After doing this it takes about 10 seconds or less to boot a game, thanks a lot!
thanks, youre the first vid i've seen to explain what's actually going on.
Over here in the northern part of the states we call the second type of screwdriver a flathead of flatbit
Thanks , I learned a lot there and I've got whole pile (7) of Disc read error state PS2s to fix up though the one i am using now i got working with just the help of a can of compressed air!
YEEESSS!!!! It really worked i'm very happy to prolonged the life of my PS2 Slim by the way it also worked on a slim type PS2, I just open it up, turn the 2nd screw the DVD type at the back of the lens then turn it just a LITTLE to the right (maybe if you turn it too much might burn the cd) then its fixed, and tested it to a Gran Turismo 3 PS2 cd to diagnose( the gran turismo 3 cd dont work before) then its fixed, now i can use my old CDs again......Thanks again it really helped alot.
Good man. High five from New Zealand!
i subscribed to u and liked this video because it made my ps2 read whatever it was desighned for1 THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Thank you this video helped a lot!
This worked 100%. I tryed the rotate the cog to raise up the laser tooth by tooth and it didnt work. I cleaned it out which i think was a good thing anyways but this worked 100% and i wish i had tried it first. Thanks and and a browny point to you. :0D
THANKS BRO!! YOU MAKE REBORN MY CONSOLE LONG YEARS AGO!!
It lives again!!
thnks 4 the vid!
*Tears of joy
@musjay YYEEESSS!!!! Thanks, I think it works nicely :D
that really great man
nice video. man
thank u, bro
thanks i followed this and worked perfect. but i think while trying to reassemble the disks stopped spinning
Hello, I tried the self diagnosis option and after a 3 minute wait, she started right up. I guess if you clean or take laser out etc. use the self diagnosis option to test it. Thank you for your help.
ya ta!! it worked!! thank you!!!
Thanks a bunch.
Worked. Thanks!
would it be safe to just turn the dvd screw a tiny bit without actually measuring with a multi metre or anything?
if this works i owe ya alot man
what is the scph model number and date code of that ps2? It looks weird/different inside than the ones I've worked on.
Good video!
Hay nice vid? One little question. When i tried without closing the chasis i found out that the motor(that rotates the disc) sometimes stopped then it rotated again and so on until it stopped showing the disc read error? is it normal when laser is not adjusted or the motor is rubbish?
this broke my ps2 thanks
+Joey Davalos It's as if you're blaming anyone but yourself.
***** adjusting the laser didn't work also there was no mention that there are different types of lasers for them
***** also I only said something too one person so how am I blaming everyone .
Joey Davalos I was meaning the original uploader. It's your own fault you broke your PS2.
Joey Davalos no fucking way
My system only has a phillips head screw on the bottom of the laser.
Thanks kid.
its now 8-9 years since i had my ps2... and for the first 5 years i think i was playing it a hour daily :=)) and never needed calibrating! I dont think i will calibrate it till it fails to read dvd's :P
Thanks
tnx bro!!
In my case, the point that you're at around 6:40, my disc is still making click noises and changing speeds and not moving in a fluent motion like yours. I have no idea where to go from there. The disc isn't moving so the diagnosis isn't going to be very effective.
I know your feels.
i need a whole laser deck replaced cause the motor died :(
Nice job dude,,, I tried to fix mine, bought a brand new laser on ebay but the console work just secs... i think i calibrate too much or something!
do u knw ow to put the silver thing bak into the console not the rset nd power button one
Mine doesn't have those on the back of the laser
Thank you very much .!!!!! im very happy Lol . thanks thanks .
How powerful is the laser can it burn the disc.
Will this work on slims too i have a 2009 or 2010 slim and has trouble reading sometimes
Thank you SO much. Now My Ps2 is fixed. I was about to throw it out
Hmm...when I put mine back together, the laser arm got stuck and now will not move past about the middle of a disc, even forcing it by hand. Any idea what might be wrong?
Got question. What will happen when i will put for example laser from SCPH9XXX into the SCPH7XXX? Will it make some damages? I was always thinking that lasers are for specified models because of the cables lenght..
Scph-700xx or 900xx uses the same laser, as "PVR802W".
you only need to turn it slightly not by much. also try playing our ps2 with it laying horizontally, not vertically
i got a disc read error in my PS2 when I tried this. how do I know if it's the right angle and if the games work? is it possible that I burned my games as well? I saw laser burns on the back of my games. well, three games at least that I don't play much. NBA 2004, Samurai Warriors 2 and Capcom Vs. SNK 2. Need help. Thanks!
thanks :D
@slrMHProjects I'm not 100% sure but your referring to the controller yes? you tried replacing the controller....If that doesn't work then you need to replace the controller port in your ps2. How to fix common ps2 problems.wmv on here shows you how to do that. ^^ Hope that helps you.
@cooliyo3000 There was 8 screws.
dude i have a problem when i do this then my ps2 reads the disk then it starts speeding up then slowing down then speeding up and then slowing down ect.
what do i do?!
what if the optic stops reading in the midst of the game? in the beginning it was fine, but in the midst of the game, the optic suddenly stops reading?? what am i supposed to do with that?
cant get blue bottoms or regular games to work now!is there a limit that u can turn the sensor things?PLEASE RESPOND! THIS IS MY ONLY SOURCE OF ENTERTAINMENT!
how come you screw the one that says DVD and fix the CD game?
Yeah I didn't know that, could save a broken ribbon knowing that
hi your ps2 what model SCPH is it?
Ghost of k24a1 here, I lost the screws and now I am dead.
i did but still no luck anyway i have replaced the laser and the modchip
the guy who fixed he said that both not working
and thanx for replaying
wht screw driver did u use
How do you fix the PS2 disc drive Ribbon cable can it be fixed.....
I hate how all these videos are in low lighting and shit. it's helpful but fuck.. whatever i hope this works
HELLO THIS IS JERRY JACKSON WELCUME 2 MY PS2 TECH TOOTORIAL
can the laser die out, if so where can you get a new one?
ebay
Gonna try it, I mean the laser works, but poorly.
great vid. you helped resurrect my old box. right on.
hey help plz
my laser is making a soft sooofftttt clicking sound and the disc motor is stopping then spinning then stopping then spining
does this method work with ps2 slim?
for me no why
he say just turn the laser screw and i did still not working
pls help
i did this to mine and it can only read CD based discs. Any idea how to fix this?
GUYS HOW ABOUT IN PS2 SLIMLINE, IS IT POSSIBLE TO CALIBRATE THE LENS OF A PS2 SLIMLINE CONSOLE ??
sorry about my noobish question... I just want to know... because my modded ps2 slim can't read my brand new original dvd game, however some of my old pirated games are still working fine and some of the new pirated games of mine didn't working.. Is this because of my Lens ?? should I Calibrate it or go for the Lens replacement ???
My laser dosent have that
On PS2 yah 'ave eight screws which is ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, an' ear.
or u can turn your ps2 upside down see if that works
mine isn't even detecting the disk :( (i put the disk in it is the same as having none in to the ps2)
old or new laser
when you say "2 screws there, and there", you don't point to them. so which screws. then you say this is the adjustment screw, and you don't point which one that is either.
Dam You Should Of Never Warped Those Laser Screws
You're into qotsa init?
hey i bought a ps2 from an apperant "friend" that said it was working before he handed it to me but when i first turned it on and tried to play a game it didnt work. so i tried adjusiting the white clicky wheel i spend hours just turning that god awful thing every notch non of it worked. i cleaned the lazer with alcohol. still doesnt work do you have any other solution then as to take the lazer off? i dont have a screw driver to turn that screw that lets you remove the lazer
This option seems to have worked for me. 20 years of no disk read then a few turns of this wheel and has started reading disks again
Im having the same problem as rexy... kinda annoying.
u found out mate das wa i am tryna find lol cant find it..le me knw if u find it mate
Im not trying to be a smart ass or anything but you first had a silver back cd in your ps2 3:03(it didnt work 0.01)That disc should be running on the dvd laser4:20. then you took it apart and twisted the dvd laser NOT THE CD LASER5:30. Then you put it back together and tested it with the blue back disc (which should be running on the cd laser) so really the cd laser was working the whole time but the dvd laser wasnt working. My point is that you really didnt show us that the mod you used worked.
who's watching this in 2018
You’re
Im not
I am in 2023
my laser doesnt even look like urs =.=
fuckin hell lad ya good ya know......
dang ill die if i loss a ps2 screw
That´s the way that ppl that don´t have a clew what are they doing do.... professionals use a Oscilloscope to se the wave form of the laser and adjust him properly..Bias and tracking, i work for Sony for some years.
then would you mind giving each one of us oscilloscopes then? i would love to have one.
there are many in e-bay
$$$
Used this as a reference, my old PS2 had reading issues (slow load, disc read errors etc. had to 'wobble' the ps2 to read). Just lubed the guide rods and slightly adjusted the POT under the laser, and boom works like new!
I got a wayyyyy smaller ps2
ear ear ear ear ear 1:03
8 screws, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear, ear :P
ya i fucked that up my first time
