    My PS2 only plays blue discs. I'm working on getting it to play silver discs today. I tried this and, though it's still not playing them, it's now making a sound like it's trying to read them when before it didn't make any sound. Should I keep turning clockwise? I've seen other tutorials that says to turn counterclockwise. Is there a point that I could turn too much and completely ruin it? Thanks!

    • @CyberhugTechnologies
      @CyberhugTechnologies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The particular model gets little more voltage clockwise. You need to double check laser model eg. pvr-802w or other? turn carefully though every time, we do not want to over-voltage :-) I recommend turn by quarter every time tops. Counterclockwise i have only tried when repairing Sega Saturn btw. and worked fine.

      Hi, it is good thinking indeed - the battery replacement. Sounds like the video output settings are lost because battery is off and needs reset. Check output config though first, to see if output matches TV settings and capabilities though, it might be CRT with limited resolution? - like 540p or something - then replace the battery - usually comes in green plastic cover. :-)

    My chiped ps2 slim reads some burned dvds fast and some it struggles. Freshly burned on a verbatim at 4x speed. Any tips? Is it just a case of adjusting the laser ? Or i have to try this with multitool and adjust the resistance to 800?

    • @CyberhugTechnologies
      @CyberhugTechnologies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, i would go for the adjustment first and see what happens, just a little turn is enough to check the problematic DVDs. i believe the latest DVDs are far more "thin" and with less layered material on top - not like the older ones. Of Course, resistance adj. is second option for sure!

    • @Gixxer983
      @Gixxer983 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CyberhugTechnologies I have checked out the DVDs laser resistance and it was set at 1150 , and it reads the disks, the only disk that it didnt work properly is San Andreas, but maby its the ISO or it needs a dual layer dvd. As far as i understand the higher the resistance set the lower the power its going thru the laser so it will last a long time. I have also tried setting it to 850 and still got issues with san andreas and no other game. So i set it back to 1150 and its runing great. Seems like a have a realy good laser that doesnt need much power to read. Thank you for the video, this seems to be really helpful :) The problem on my PS2 is a bit different so I'm on the fence if I should try this method. It can read PS1 games and double layer DVDs, but no single layer PS2 game. I tried Xenosaga 1 and several video DVDs and it plays them just fine. For every other PS2 game the game starts spinning and the laser makes some noises and it quits with a reading error. Do you have a suggestion for this problem? Is it useful to mess with the potentiometer in that case or should I try something else?

    • @CyberhugTechnologies

    • @ShiroiRyuLuga
      @ShiroiRyuLuga 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CyberhugTechnologies Thank you for your answer! I only heard that grinding noise you describe once or twice, most of the time it's just a quiet sound where i thought the laser tries to position itself and just stops after a few seconds. What I tried right now was starting the console with open disc lid to see if the disc spins. With a PS2 game it accelerates and decelerates a few times, decelerating makes a "clicky" noise and thats all that happens.
      I did what you described in the video about the grinding noise, just to be sure. Also, I did some more tests with discs after this:
      Audio disc: endless "reading disc"
      Video DVD: works
      PS2 game: short "reading disc" followed by "disc cannot be read"
      DL-PS game: starts fine
      Sorry about this monster of a comment, I'm just really clueless about what it happening in my PS2 :( All the solutions I can find online only talk about how their PS2s can't read Dual Layers anymore or no DVDs at all.

    • @CyberhugTechnologies
      @CyberhugTechnologies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShiroiRyuLuga Hi nd thanks for sharing symptoms here :-) Sounds to me like your laser is about to die honestly - the only way to be sure is to go ahead and turn the potentiometers clockwise as shown. If problem persists then the voltage trick cannot do much since, the laser is too old to even support more current. That's why it goes fast then slow rotation again as it thinks it found no disk (weak beam).

  • @Tezuk_25
    @Tezuk_25 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tez! thanks for watching and for the useful thinking/comment here! Truth is, it is never very precise, after long trial 'n error testing, i can say just not to go below a resistance of 750 Ohms on the DVD potentiometer and try please, not to go below a resistance of 670 Ohms on the CD potentiometer Again, all these out of my lab and after several tests that worked for myself!

    • @CyberhugTechnologies
      @CyberhugTechnologies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi - good question but all that happens is the laser gets weak beam over time so, less resistance is needed on the circuit in order to boost it up a bit. Sometimes, like you said, the potentiometer gets dirty and so, needs some moving but that is rare.

    • @CyberhugTechnologies
      @CyberhugTechnologies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi there, please, double-check the motor movement, usually grinding comes from there while the laser tries to find the spot to start reading from and stops if it is not possible to start reading - this might be the case. There is a shaft from the motor to the lens part which does the movement up and down, Add some graphite lubricant around the shaft - just a couple of drops. The lens might need change after all, this solution shown just extends the reading ability of the lens but at some point the beam might be so weak over time that there is not much we can do other than a new laser. Hope this helps and thanks!

      Hi, it can be the solution, yes. Strange noises might be not enough power to read the disk so, it tries forever - therefore less resistance might need to be adjusted (like in this video) but also might be problem with motor spinning (rare). Hi, typical loose placement it is - happens to everyone, watch for fastening the disk correctly into the central ring! Needs to be firmly placed in there to start reading process, then everything goes smoothly.

      @@CyberhugTechnologies I don’t think it’s that. Its weird, when id doesnt work and tries loading it has like a buzzing sound, kind of like a tattoo gun. It’ll go bzzzzzz, stop for a few seconds and bzzzzz. When it loads right it doesn’t have that sound. I make sure the game is seated properly to. Any other ideas would be appreciated before I send it back.

      @@user-qc7hr4my7r Hey, the grind noise means the shaft that moves the lens up and down doesn't get completely and firmly with the motor shaft! so, it might be in contact or not with unstable behavior - classic problem after all the years - the shaft is thin plastic with teeth underneath - needs to be gently bend to make good contact with its teeth again against the motor shaft - for this, lens removal is needed - if you think you can do it ok - i was planning to prep a video since it happens often.

    I accidentally recently dropped my ps2 slim unit. Not sure if this video has anything to do with my issue but my ps2 games will no longer work however I did try an audio CD and a ps1 game and those both worked. So I adjusted the DVD screw on the back of the laser twice and the ps2 games still did not work. Should I keep turning the screw or do you have any other suggestions ?? My unit was working fine until i recently dropped it so not sure if this screw is relevant or not .

      Hi Dill and thanks for watching. The mishap with the PS2 drop sounds irrelevant with the laser screw adjustment, at least for the purpose of it. The whole laser mechanism likes to be correctly aligned with the cd/dvd surface. at the same time the mechanism has this little "eye" to read the surface of the disk and pass it over to the circuit. There are many tiny little wires there to carry the signals. Bottomline is, i think you need a new laser - the whole thing - from ebay or somewhere - Hope this helps!
