Hello, My ps2 slim (scph-70004) has problems. The discs start spinning but then stop. Sometimes they don't start spinning at all, instead sometimes the disc spins well and I can play with it. I noticed that the ribbon cable that connects to the lens has lifted and is scratching the discs. Do you think that by changing this ribbon cable, the spinning problem will also be solved?
Hi the ribbon cable lifting is a common problem on these consoles, they can be just glued back down to stop the scratching. If the cable has started to get damaged from rubbing the discs it is possible it could be causing your problem. If the two switches I show in this video are working fine and the ribbon cable is fine then the discs not spinning could also be caused by a dying laser,
@@EasyConsoleFixesI noticed that my ps2 always reads cd's (blue disc) but only sometimes it can read dvd's (silver disc). Is it possible to solve the problem by setting the appropriate potentiometer? Do you know the ohms right values for CDs and DVDs ?
You could get it to work by changing the resistance but I would just change the laser. Adjusting the potentiometer only ever seems to be a temporary solution and changing the laser on these consoles is not too difficult. I would also check the ribbon cable. In this video th-cam.com/video/E7UAJqbpRZU/w-d-xo.html I had the same thing, the console would play blue games but not silver and it was caused by a small bit of damage on the ribbon.

Some of the console models the spindle is really easy to change and in some it's difficult so it may be worth checking you have one of the easier ones.
My PS2 slim was struggling to load the disc but I managed to fix it by applying pressure up to the point when it suddenly worked even without applying pressure. Today I opened the case and tried to press both buttons in order to see if the discs would properly load then. The Discs only spin for a brief amount of time and then stop however. Do you think I should replace the entire laser with a new one?
Normally if the PS2 will only load certain types of games it is a faulty laser causing it. I have seen it caused by a damaged ribbon cable so that is also worth taking a look at.

It is worth noting that all thoes ps2s have been worked on for playing burnt discs with the sensors
Normally a PS2 does this when the laser no longer works. You could try replacing a laser or adjusting the laser potentiometer to see if increasing the power gets the laser to read games. Playing burnt discs is known to be hard on the lasers, it could be worth looking into getting a HDD
When you held the switches down does the laser lens move up and down or try and focus. If the lasers tries to focus but it doesn't spin it's probably a faulty spindle motor, spindle motor fuse or maybe the ribbon to the spindle motor.
I have a PS2, everything seems to be working with it but it stops spinning after a little bit of play and it seems to randomly stop spinning. Could this be an issue with the sensors? Are these replacements just bad?
If the laser is moving the issue is not the sensors. You will have no movement of the laser or motor if the sensors are not detecting the lid is closed. Does your original motor still spin or have all motors stopped spinning. If its all motors one of the fuses on the board could have blown.
@@EasyConsoleFixes The original motor moves but seems to randomly stop after some time, sometimes it will stop after a couple minutes, sometimes a few seconds, other times over an hour. It will usually start spinning again after opening and closing the lid as well. Thanks for replying!

If you have checked the two switches in the video are ok and the disc still doesn't spin you could have a broken spindle motor or the ribbon cable to the motor could be damaged or loose and is worth checking.
If you are sure the lid closed switches are working correctly and the disc still doesn't even try and spin then the issue is probably with your spindle motor. It may be worth checking the motor, ribbon cable to the motor and the fuses on the board to make sure these are ok.

Worked when I put it away, I got it out to play, out the disc in closed the door, the laser moved, lit up, but the motor wasn't spinning. I still get it out every once in a while to mess with it, but everything I find always points to those switches, which both work perfectly. I think the motors fried.
If the laser is moving but the motor makes no attempt to spin it does seem that the issue is the motor. Could be worth checking the ribbon cables to the motor first as some times these can be damaged

I have a problem with drive not spinning at all. I tried to push these 2 swithces by hand and laser want to read the disc but drive doesn't spin at all. It say Reading disc for a second on the screen before it dissapears
Do you have any solution to that?
It could be worth checking the spindle motor or the ribbon cable that goes to it. If the laser is trying to read but the disc doesn't spin at all.
I know I'm a little late here, but maybe you made the same mistake I did and opened the system, turned it on, and pressed the switches, but had no disc in. If there is no disc, the laser will move and try to read for a second, then stop since it did not see a disc.
@@keatr0n I don't remember if I did this but whn you have shelf on and close lid with no disc, isn't the result the same? Because you can have closed console with no disc
@@Tezuk_25 you can close it with no disc, but I don't think it actually spins without a disc. I had the top cover off, no disc, and when I pushed both switches down, the laser moved, but the disc didn't spin. When I insert a disc and try again, it spins up and reads just fine. My problem is with the switches, but this made me think it was with the disc drive.
@@keatr0n Oh yeah. I tried this countless times as a kdi. That's normal thing to do. Unfornatelly this problem occured with disc in tray
The laser thing goes down to where the disc is but it doesn't spin
If you have checked that these two switches are working and the disc still doesn't spin the console may need to have the spindle motor replaced.

My ps2 would run ps2 games only but I just bought a dvd-r to do the free mcboot thing but the problem is the dvd won't run correctly it start spinning for seconds then stops I tried several DVDs and ps2 games and it was working but not the dvd-r how can I fix it? I only want this dvd to run so I can install free mcboot
in the beginning i clicked both the sensor buttons to try and get my disk drive to move but it won’t move and it shut off the console every time. any solution?
I don't want to ask an obvious question but the one at the front, are you pushing down the little leaver and not touching the power button which is on the same board.
If not it could be worth checking is it a faulty power board.
@@EasyConsoleFixes Hey that was my guess, I was pressing down the power button lever and the sensor at the back at the same time, after a bit it would just shut off not do anything, I've even tried putting the disk in, and turning the console on, and it turns the console off automatically. Im probably going to try and switch the power board, but if thats not the issue then I might end up listing it as parts or repair, because I have no clue how to fix it haha.
Hello,
My ps2 slim (scph-70004) has problems.
The discs start spinning but then stop.
Sometimes they don't start spinning at all, instead
sometimes the disc spins well and I can play with it.
@@EasyConsoleFixes ok,
In any case, i decrese the DVD potentiometer from 963 ohm to 817 ohm , is it ok ? It should't be under 725 ohm , right ?
Sorry. I don't know the correct ohm values for these lasers as I just tend to replace them. Did adjusting the laser fix the issue for you.
My button is literally broken and I have no idea how I can solder the various pins, can you tell me how I should solder
Here is a picture of the way the switch should be soldered. imgur.com/gallery/jRa1W
Only one of these solder joints is needed, this person did both just to be sure.
will this work with the other ps2 slim models? i don't know what mine is, but imagine the disk latch is facing towards you. so the motherboard is on the left, and the drive is on the right, the vents are on the right side with the drive, and there is a circular depression between the motherboard and drive. thank you
All the PS2 slims have these two lid switches except the 90000 series consoles. These only have the one lid switch at the front of the console.
I was using the psp charger on mine could that be the issue?
That could be your issue. The PSP charger outputs 5 volt and a PS2 Slim charger outputs 8.5 volts so the PS2 may not be getting enough power.
@@EasyConsoleFixes interesting, that would make Sense as the machine has never had any issues with it’s optical drive besides some dvd playback errors.
Hello even when I cluck the trigger manually it doesn't spin
Are you getting any movement from the laser, after the console detects the lid has closed it will try read the disc. If it doesn't detect a disc it wont spin.
@@EasyConsoleFixes no, no movement :(
I have a slight issue. My silver PS2 slim won't spin and so i opened it up and found that it doesn't have the sensor in the back like the one shown in the video. This PS2 worked perfectly in the past so i need help
Yes the later model PS2 slims only has the one lid switch at the front of the console. When you press this switch down does the motor try and spin.
@@EasyConsoleFixes it does not. I figure it must have gone faulty as i have hooked power to it and then attempted to see if it would spin and it does not spin in the slightest.
@@Dragonman1477 does the laser lens move move up and down and try and focus.
If nothing at all happens when you press the switch down it's probably a faulty switch.
If the lasers tries to focus but it doesn't spin it's probably a faulty spindle motor or maybe the ribbon to the spindle motor.
@@EasyConsoleFixes no so it has to be the switch.
Hi, my PS2 Slim cd drive spins both ways, is there a fix for this problem? I'm looking for a new motor anyways, but I can't find which one it is, I don't see a type number like which on the laser is written as; PVR-802W. It could be the flexcable of the motor, but it's soldered on the board and that's why I have to look for a whole new motor
Hi, I'm not sure what you mean by the drive spins both ways. The slim uses a few different spindle motors. If you search for the model of console and spindle motor you should see the correct one.
Some of the console models the spindle is really easy to change and in some it's difficult so it may be worth checking you have one of the easier ones.
My PS2 slim was struggling to load the disc but I managed to fix it by applying pressure up to the point when it suddenly worked even without applying pressure.
Since a few days it wouldn’t load PS2 games but was still able to load simple DVD discs and PS1 Discs as well.
I tried cleaning the laser with Propanol alcohol but it didn’t fix the problem.
@@fetchslaybffr Hi, I'm not too familiar with the DVD McBoot but I know it only works with some DVD drive versions and you have to use a DVD with the correct ISO version for your drive.
If your PS2 is playing games fine there is no issue with machine so I would think the issue must be either the DVD-R or the software installed on it.
@@EasyConsoleFixes how to know what is my correct version of my drive?

I have had three ps2 slims with the same problem i turn the ps2 on and the ps2 wants to start spinning but then stops and it only spins the disc a fraction and then you just hear it ticking what could this issue be? It is worth noting that all thoes ps2s have been worked on for playing burnt discs with the sensors
Normally a PS2 does this when the laser no longer works. You could try replacing a laser or adjusting the laser potentiometer to see if increasing the power gets the laser to read games.
Playing burnt discs is known to be hard on the lasers, it could be worth looking into getting a HDD
im pressing both switches but the disc still doesnt spin what should i do?
When you held the switches down does the laser lens move up and down or try and focus.
If nothing at all happens when you press the switches down it's probably a faulty switch as the console is not detecting the lid is closed.
As a secondary question:
At first I thought it was the motor, so I bought a replacement disc assembly, laser and motor included, putting that in the motor doesn't spin at all but the laser moves and lights up, this is my second replacement disc drive assembly that has the same issue too.
@@freebite If the old motor works its not a fuse then. I would be surprised if the motor had failed on 2 replacement drive assemblies though so not sure what's happening there.
The Lid Closed sensors are really just two switches, It is possible the solder connection on the the rear one has cracked causing the console to randomly think the console lid has been opened.
@@EasyConsoleFixes Alright, thanks for the help, I'll try and bypass the rear switch and see what happens.
Otherwise I have no idea why the new ones won't work. Unless it's because mine has a smaller worm gear motor than the one shown in this video, would that effect anything or would it still be pretty plug--n-play? I made sure to buy ones that seem to match, I'm not using the wrong one.

Hi could someone please tell me where is the cmos battery on this version of the ps2?
On this model it's under the shielding on the top side over near the power jack. It's just a standard CR2032, there's a plastic holder on the board for it, not like the other ones which have a CR2032 attached to wires with a connector.
Thank you so much for this video. I literally just did what you did to my PS2 slim and it works great now. Unfortunately I do need to get something more stronger to keep the latches inside the PS2 from un latching. At least right now the tape I have on it is working lol
Thanks for the comment glad the video was able to help.
I tested the spin with holding down the relevant spots, cleaned them too...nothing. Is it worth my time resoldering, batt change. Or should I troubleshoot something else?
When you held the switches down does the laser lens move up and down or try and focus.
If nothing at all happens when you press the switches down it's probably a faulty switch as the console is not detecting the lid is closed.
If the lasers tries to focus but it doesn't spin it's probably a faulty spindle motor, spindle motor fuse or maybe the ribbon to the spindle motor.
@@EasyConsoleFixes thanks. I'll investigate and let you know!
@@EasyConsoleFixes yep. Nothing happens. The switch doesn't go green. Just stays red or goes out. Time for a new switch from somewhere you think?
@@Mandosami Sorry when I said switches, I meant the 2 switches inside the console that detect when the lid is closed.
When you say "doesn't go green" to do mean the power switch of the console. If the power switch doesn't go green it could be the switch is gone or one of the fuses inside the console could have blown.
@@EasyConsoleFixesthis is exactly the issue I am having
Can you do tutorial to cleaning the laser..i dont know how to cleaning the laser
So its not the pressure on the things that make the disk spin, for mine it works but, it cant read the disk or doesn't sense it, is it the disc reader that needs to be fixed?
If so could you give me a link to it on Amazon and if you haven't, make a video on how to fix it
If the disc tries to spin or is spinning and not being read it probably is the laser which has gone. I have a video of changing the laser in the PS2 Slim if you want to check it out.

Whats the parts name?
The part is the lid sensor or lid switch.
The PS2 came to me in a dead state (outwardly), well, it seemed to be working, the reset button was broken (just 2 wires were sticking out), untwisted it, the cable from the power-up board was chewed up, there was half a bucket of dust, well, in general, I cleaned everything, put it in order, turned it on, a couple of times (I closed the reset contacts with a screwdriver, because as I already said, there is no button), and the third time I apparently poked it somewhere in the wrong place, in general The set-top box went out completely, even the red light in standby mode does not light up.
Had you any luck fixing this, it sounds like you blew a fuse in the console.
When I Put A Disc In, The Laser Eye Moves But The Disc Still Doesn’t Spin

If you have checked the two switches in the video are ok and the disc still doesn't spin you could have a broken spindle motor or the ribbon cable to the motor could be damaged or loose and is worth checking.

@@colaboy5796 That does seem like one of the switches is not working and the console is not registering that the lid is closed.
Still doesn't work
If you are sure the lid closed switches are working correctly and the disc still doesn't even try and spin then the issue is probably with your spindle motor.
It may be worth checking the motor, ribbon cable to the motor and the fuses on the board to make sure these are ok.
I can't find anyone having the problem I have with mine. I had it stored in a drawer for about a year.
So the laser wouldnt cause the disc to stop spinning? I just had a slim not read disc but also not spin up at all. I replaced the laser and it spins and reads discs just fine. Im learning, so any pointers/info would be appreciated because I would really like to learn how to fix consoles.
Did the old laser try and do anything at all. Even if it didn't spin did the lens move up and down to try and focus.
I would have thought the console would spin a little and then stop if the laser was dying but maybe if the laser was completely dead it might not try and spin at all.
Look at your laser and disc and see if you can see anything out of the ordinary
Not spinning
thank you, my disc didnt spin it seems a lil bit stiff, but i will look at the switch, and plus the power cable connector, i have to put a tiny bit of pressure to get it to power on
There's a little brake at the back of the disc that moves out of the way when the lid closes, is that why it feels stiff.
The power connector is an easy fix if you can use a soldering iron. I have a video of how to do it if you want to check it out.
