    I’m bipolar and I stopped meds because they made me worse. I have tried multiple meds and a lot of them either work and have terrible side effects, or they make my mental health worse. I have been off meds for a year and I’ve been continuing therapy and I’m making more progress actually working through how to deal with my unregulated emotions, and I love where I am.

      The lifetime progression of the affective (not just bipolar) illnesses is actually not well documented. The general trend does appear to be that the illness gets worse overtime. However, some sub populations do not seem to display that phenomenon and they either show no change in severity of illness or actually show a decrease in severity.
      But most people with an affective disorder will get worse over time and the question of why is contested in the literature. There roughly two camps, the first thinks that the worsening of the disease is due to some underlying physiology. Like something that either produces, regulates, or receives neurotransmitters (or a combination of those). If that turns out to be the case then the worsening of the ailment is inevitable. The second camp backs the kindling hypothesis. The kindling hypothesis basically states that each episode does very minor damage or alterations to the brain. As the person as more episodes all of those small, nearly imperceptible, changes add up. This leads to the individual to have episodes that are easier to bring about (and can happen without triggers), increased duration, severity, and rate of intensifying. The frequency of episodes will also increase and the duration of time between episodes will decrease.
      Which of those two are true is up for debate. It could be that it’s a combination of the two. That there is some inherent underlying physiological process that worsens bipolar presentation. But that that physiological process happens more readily and dramatically when a person is experiencing an episode. With all of that said, if the kindling hypothesis turns out to be accurate, even in the less significant case (where it exasperates a physiological process already occurring), then the importance for people with bipolar to stay on their medication becomes paramount.

      I'm sorry your situation is frustrating you. each person needs to make decisions based on their own circumstances NOT on your situation or belief.
      Maybe try finding out the reasons why your sister goes off her medication (whether it's nasty side effects or whether she feels worse or...) and educating yourself about alternatives to the medication (including other medications) might help your sister more than trying to force her to take something she isn't willing to stay on.
      All I'm saying is that by forcing her back on medication (or trying to) it could end up being the worst thing you could do. Be willing to educate yourself and your sister. Blessings, Dot

    You hit the nail on the head Rob!! I was off my meds for a year, and I was "faking it until I made it" right up until I just broke last year. It took me to find a new psychiatrist and counselor 8 months. It was rough.
    I am also super sensitive to medication, and it's like automatically my brain is all "NOPE GET OFF." I lost 3 jobs because of it, and was in a manic spree. That was rough.
    I am so thankful I FINALLY have a strong team that stands with me. Now I'm just trying to fight the stigma. I hope you have a wonderful new year, and thanks for continuing to make these videos!!

    Thanks for your video. Medications are sore spot for many of us. Back in the 60's when I was diagnosed as bipolar 1, there were not many meds. Psychiatrists tried many things on me. I got a bit functional, but had an extra 100 pounds to carry around, and I did not have any dreams, goals, or spirit. For long periods all I could do was just sit in a chair. I gradually got off my meds with guidance of my psychiatrist. My life has gone up and down, but was never boring. Meds may have kept me normal, but without meds I had the drive to accomplish many of my life long dreams: black belt, marathons, career, family, travel, education, awards. I went skin diving in the Keys, walked across the Grand Canyon, and even used the Hubble Space Telescope. It seems that meds help most people. But, so many do not like them. I could not find the right meds in 7 years; I guess I sometimes envy those who just have to take a few pills.

    • @starfall-b8c
      @starfall-b8c ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on achieving so much! I am happy to see fellow bipolar people living and achieving their goals! I can understand the envy, but we are all different and have different chemistry. You may have to work harder to live with Bipolar because your body doesn't respond well to meds but this is life. In the future maybe the medical industry will consider expanding their audience but the field of medicine concerning this mental illness is newly formed. Being diagnosed in the 60s must have been even tougher, I'm sorry. One would like to hope that we will be responsible in creating cures and managing symptoms. But unfortunately I am doubtful, seeing the way we're headed that there will be a pill worth taking for sensitive people like ourselves.

      lRAY1337 I had a really rough time finding the right medication. My body is extremely sensitive, and I ended up giving up on many medications, many times... it took a while to find the right doctor, and the right dosage especially. If I take too much of the wrong medication, the side effects are horrible, it won’t work, or I feel like a zombie. I had to find the perfect micro dose that works for me. I know it is scary as hell to try out new medications. I’ve been through that many times. When you are ready, try a different approach… Like with a different doctor, and starting off with a baby small dose to see how you react to the medication. I hope that helps a little bit :-)

      If you are lucky you find the right combo, and it sounds different for many people. Wellbutrin for mood stab. And quetiapine for sleep regulation.no crazy mania or depression, but no mania=low drive (could be personal ambition as well) again, it's situational. Paying for healthcare vs universal makes a big difference in the ability to test different combinations. Good luck everyone, and be careful, it's degenerative and insidious. T2.

    My ex husband has bipolar disorder (type I, mostly manic) and, after a year and a half of the diagnosis, he is now starting to accept the illness. The problem is it took such a toll on me that I couldn't keep the relationship: the desappearings, the anger issues, the psychosis that lead to hospitalization, all of that (of course, he would just shout at me that he wasn't ill and I was just trying to "control every single step of him"), the cheatting (not just sexual, but also about his meds and therapy)... It just became too much for me to handle. He used to say he'd get treatment so we could be together, not understanding that it was his own life on the line, not just our marriage.
    Now it seems he's coping better, but I no longer feel attracted to him. I love this man, but more like a sister, and I'll be there for him as a friend for as long as it doesn't disturb his future new marriage. Also, I still love the family around us (his parents, his sister) and I hope they don't hate me for leaving. Everything is extremelly painful.

    Your videos are great and I love the way you spread info about Bipolar, to help everyone who suffers from this terrible "disease". I will say that meds can help but they also take away and make life bland and boring. After doing some research on Credible nutritionists and big Pharma, a lot of your symptoms that contribute to bipolar can be fixed without meds and cured. Meds treat the symptoms, a lifestyle change can cure them. A couple things that surprised me about Bi- Polar is that it isn't Genetic like everyone says, a lot of it manifests from the environment you lived in as a child and it is proven that any abuse from sexual to physical can cause psychosis later in life. Our nutrient deficient diets is also an underlying reason we have so many mood disorders such as bipolar. Just think; if our body is deprived and starving for certain nutrients and minerals we would feel the endless fatigue and ups and downs that contribute to this so-called disease. It makes perfect sense in todays world when more than half our population indulges in unhealthy Cheetos, pop tarts and sugary foods instead of fruits and vegetables. There is also no such thing as a chemical imbalance, watch Dr John Bergman on Bi polar, he will explain every aspect of this terrible disease. Also the meds dehydrate your brain, which causes you to loose the creativeness that drives you, elimination of MSG's, refined sugars, alcohol, coffee, and several other things can ease symptoms.
    1st step is a changed Diet
    Second Step is get the right nutrients as shown below
    A couple of natural supplements you need to take are :
    1. Omega-3 fatty acids
    2. Choline
    3. Folic acid
    4. B vitamins, Vitamin B, B complex
    5. Vitamin C
    6. Magnesium
    7. Zinc
    8. The amino acids taurine and tyrosine.
    No refined Sugars
    Refined sugars is any food with sucrose, glucose, fructose, maltose dextrose, lactose, high fructose corn syrup, molasses, honey, evaporated cane juice, fruit juice concentrates, cane crystals and corn sweetener all indicate the presence of refined sugars.
    Some not-so-obvious sources of refined sugar include peanut butter, pasta sauce, soups, salad dressings and ketchup. Avoid buying new foods that have any of these terms near the beginning of the ingredient list or several of the terms contained throughout the list.
    Last thing if you have autoimmune diseases that cause inflammation like RA, it contributes to mood swings and can cause onset bipolar, I got diagnosed with RA before bipolar, and many new studies indicate our mood disorders are caused by inflammation in our brains.
    Change diet, change your life its simple but few are willing to try it.

    Ok thank you so much for making this!! I watched this when I was first diagnosed, and after a few really crappy months, I started feeling significantly better this week. I was honestly thinking about stopping my medicine-maybe I was fine after all! But then I remembered you saying something about not stopping your meds just because you feel fine, so you’re directly responsible for keeping me on my meds! Thank you!

    Thanks sooo much for sharing! It’s such a hard road to travel....you explained the thought process perfectly! At 55, I wonder, Hell...Why go through all this now after much of life has been destroyed. Why not just avoid society? Then I think of how many more down cycles will I have to endure and push through without relief. I think about how hard it is to keep hiding the lows for fear of driving people away. I think of the people that lost the battle with great sadness. Thanks for trying to smooth out the path for us a bit.❤️

    Trileptal is the most terrible drug I've been on. I am finally trying to get off it after 20 years.. It may give you a buzz or that numb feeling that relieves tension and anxiety, but it also gives you dizziness (sometimes severe, causing falls or disorientation), blurred vision (sometimes even double vision, which is extremely dangerous if you are driving), and a loss of mental accuity (which impairs your ability to do just about anything).

      I know someone who was diagnosed with bipolar right after experiencing sexual abuse. They couldnt sleep because of the trauma and after going manic from lack of sleep she was given a diagnosis of bipolar. The meds she was on were awful. Your experience reminds me of their story. If it makes your life unbearable you shouldnt have to do it. I hope youve found solutions, I salute you for your trials.

    I've been diagnosed with "something mental" since i was 12. Than at 19 it was finally agreed on BP 2. Only found the right doctor with right meds and dosages at 27 years old... Im 33 now. I've done a lot of shit, but i have to admit that in general the meds make my life easier. Less risky. Well sometimes. It actualy depends on the time of the year and the sun.

      @PolarWarriors  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The16BitLolita I agree and relate to everything you said! It was exactly around puberty that my brain chemistry changed and my childhood was plagued by depression. I was diagnosed at 20 with general depression and a couple years later as having bipolar. Medication definitely helps me, but it is far from a fix. There are still many days where the sky is falling, or I am crawling out of my skin with manic anxiety. It just happens a lot less with the medications. The seasons also play a huge role in the way I feel. We are definitely cut from the same cloth. A very warm welcome to my channel and I hope you will continue to stop back by :-)

    I'm 63 yrs old and have dealt with this for 43 years. Your life situation changes often and 1 or 2 medicines do not work the same over time and age. Every doctor have a different take on your health and their prescription choices. This type of health care is extremely unpredicable and costs are unprecedented. Your lucky to get the your needs met without extremely working at it. None of this is easy. The best advice I got from health professionals was be kind to yourself. Although your information is well organized and clearly explained. Wish us all well.

    Wouw... Your vids are amzing, I love the way you describe the bipolar life. I feel it so deep. I was diagnosed bout a year ago, but I've been in a total denial, I could just not accept the diagnose, and I was quite sure it was all my surroundings, near loved ones, who was wrong, even though all in my life path, just was falling apart, Ive been manic with psychosis and deep depressions all at the same time, I ruined really much and no people around me just could not tolrate or be near me, and that made me more sick, I fell a big rejection, I couldnt understand and I thought they were all crazy, untill I crashed totally about one month ago, and i felt there were no place for me in this world, I've been in drug and alcohol abuse for about 15 years, but I stopped using 2 years ago, I had reached the bottom and I was so ill in mind and body, that i couldnt have a single drop of alcohol or drugs in me anymore.my life changed totally, like a miracle, through AA and their 12 step program, I was convinced that all my psychotic mania and depression was due to my addict illness, but all my bipolar symptons just got worse and worse in my sober life, and I just denied all of it. Now I'm here, and I've had the deep feeling now, that all this bipolar is totally out of my control, I need help. I've met a specialist in bipolar and she is just awesome, and really proffesional, I'm looking forward to a much more balanced life, where I can practice all the wonderfull & positive sides by being bipolar, cuz we have so much to offer others, when we are in balance. Again thank you very much for your amazing videos, and this one about meds feel just at the right time, cuz now I'm willing to take the meds... Much love here from little Denmark, EU....

    I’m losing quite a bit of hair from taking Wellbutrin. I stopped the medication and I’m going on Zoloft. I’m always afraid when I have to start a new medication because anything could happen with my behavior and sometimes I just can’t handle it.

    • @PolarWarriors
      @PolarWarriors  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wellbutrin and Zoloft are COMPLETELY different classes of drugs... Taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs like Zoloft) for someone with bipolar disorder can be a complex issue... SSRIs are commonly used to treat depression by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. However, for individuals with bipolar disorder, SSRIs can sometimes trigger manic or hypomanic episodes, particularly if not used in conjunction with a mood stabilizer.

      I would suggest maybe talking to your doctor about trying a smaller dose or possibly a different medication if you feel like it’s causing you to lose who you are. There is a really fine line between being successfully medicated, or overly medicated and feeling like a zombie. I thought feeling like a zombie was normal for years until my dose was adjusted. I don’t sleep 14 hours a day now, and can function quite a bit better. It was a huge journey finding the right balance for me when it came to medications. I hope that helps :-)

Sounds crazy huh. I still haven't told anyone but i dont think they need to know. Wow, microdosing? Never heard. Im super sensitive to meds too!? I took half the Rx and it works great. During the times when I haven't been on the right meds I've had the experience you had.....ruining relationships, friendships, jobs, schooling.....my life. What I'm on now and what I've been on generally since July has made a huge difference.

The video I just listened to is as clear and thorough as any I have heard. So true I was diagnosed 13 years ago and spent a long time in denial I had bipolar. I remember 7 years ago I came off the meds and then was told straight out by a psychiatrist I was highly likely to relapse. At the time I convinced myself I could go med free I bought a whole bunch off multivitamin as I did some research online and discovered success stories and believed I could manage it myself. Then I decided having breakdown was too high risk to take so went back on low dose meds!! I played God with my meds and would often half a dose especially if I had to be up extra early. Sadly I relapsed in 2016 after my fourth child and was further diagnosed with PTSD as well. I am grateful for your channel as I am taking my mental health very serious!!Thank you for these videos I can relate to your insight into our illness so much ❤

      Sandra A they are far and few between. It’s basically qualifying a doctor to make sure that they have years of experience and have seen many patients. Definitely a psychologist over a general practitioner would be the best. General doctors only get a very limited course that covers all of psychology. Going to someone who specifically studied psychology is a lot better. I’m so glad my channel is helping. Just as another resource, there are some amazing bipolar Facebook groups out there with thousands of members. It’s not always the greatest information, but there’s always someone to talk to so maybe consider checking some of those out. My bipolar symptoms are better, but I now have anxiety. Thankfully, I’m on the waiting list to see a clinical psychologist, so I’m hoping things will improve

      Thank you for sharing your journey! It sounds like you've been through a lot, but it's great to hear that you're finding a better med combo and are on your way to seeing a psychologist. Take it one step at a time, and remember you're not alone in this!
