But remember all the crap she took for this song? People said she was trying to get children to "worship Satan." So ridiculously funny and sad. I still cannot believe she (and her band) are NOT in the Hall of Fame!

as an abused child I used to sing along with this song so angry, now as a mom I can't even listen to it without crying my eyes out and am proud to say I have never hit my children. It’s called Hell Is For Children because an abused child’s life is a living hell.
I was thirteen yrs old in 1980, when this song was released, and for the first time in my life I felt like someone actually saw me. This song brings tears to my eyes still, and I’m 56 now. This song hits home because I was knocked around pretty good as a kid by a stepfather.
I thought he was a giant...and it was like hell to live in fear when he was around. That was 40+ yrs ago . With that being said I have a sister from that relationship...she is 8yrs younger than me,I'm 50.
And I can't imagine my life without her and my beautiful, intelligent, amazing nieces....Mariana 7 and Camryn 15. We are very close
And live 10 min away from eachother...and I would go through that HELL all over again in a heartbeat than to live without them♡♡♡ Saw him about 5yrs ago...amazing how small he looked.
I also saw the shame and regret in his eyes, and I think he saw forgiveness in mine....although it wasn't easy.
But I had to put down what has kinda haunted me for 40yrs.

@@truckerkevthepaidtourist Almost exactly right. It was Pat and her original bassist, Roger Capps, who wrote the tune, Neil wrote the guitar stuff and pumped it up in his usual fashion.
Something happened over time and Roger got written out of Pat and Neil's discussion of the past, but back in the day Roger and Pat were thick as thieves. They were playing music together before Neil and Pat even met and they had a thing where they'd call each other with song ideas at all hours of the day or night.
"My Clone Sleeps Alone" is another song inspired by an article.
I have a bunch of interviews on tape from the 80's and it's sad to listen to them. Pat and Neil used to talk as much about the band as they did about themselves. Now when I see them on TV or whatever, there's not a lot of recognition for the folks playing with them.

They cry in the dark, so you can't see their tears
They hide in the light, so you can't see their fears
Forgive and forget, all the while
Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child
Because Hell, Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
    Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn't have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh
It's all so confusing, this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes, and then apologize
Be daddy's good girl, and don't tell mommy a thing
Be a good little boy, and you'll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell off the swing
Because Hell, Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
    Hell, hell is for children
And you shouldn't have to pay for your love
With your bones and your flesh
    No, Hell is for children
    Hell, Hell is for Hell
Hell is for Hell, Hell is for children
    Hell, Hell is for Hell

I hope Pat knows all the good this song has done. She committed to singing this song at every concert to raise awareness and she has done so for decades. A good friend in high school was empowered by this song to tell her mom about dads abuse. Mom believed and he never got to see his kids alone again, except thru professionally monitered visits. She has also written/sung songs about mental illness, homelessness, and other social ills. Why she isnt in the rock hall of fame yet i dont understand.

I was curious if you’d reacted to this song after I saw your recent video for another Benatar tune. You caught the meaning right away, and I could see a serious side (not that it’s bad) on your face, about the topic.
Also, Beenatar had profits from this song given to charities and organizations that work with abused children, so strongly did she feel about it. I admired her for that alone. Plus it’s still a good rocker of a tune.

Gosh, I haven't heard this song for at LEAST 30 years. Pat was a force to be reckoned with back then... actually, she still IS, if I'm not mistaken.

From my perspective, all adults are responsible for the welfare of children, whether they're yours or not. Always look out for the little ones who can't defend themselves. No child should be subjected to pain and abuse. Keep eyes and ears open. You may save a child's life.

Pat Benatar had read newspaper articles about a specific child abuse cases. It's called *Hell Is For Children,* because essentially it is when that child is being abused in any way...

Different circumstances, but I still react viscerally to this song. Sometimes it can make me feel like I'm never going to stop shaking. I can still hear my parents in my head thirty years after they'd both gone, and my childhood still tortures me. I can feel my heart racing typing this; listening to this song still has the power to affect me deeply forty; fifty years later. Sometimes when I was young I'd be screaming these words out while I played the vinyl '45 at the loudest of volumes; I still want to.

For those that were not around and aware of things in the 70's and 80's... The world was quite different than today. Often children would take a beating from dad OR mom... and people knew but really did not do much of anything because it was the code that what happens under their roof is their business. Same goes for women being beat, and YES men being beat by women. Go back another decade and people simply looked the other way. Pat Benetar was being quite controversial to sing about this, and she did make an impact. It is hard for somebody born in the 90's or later to understand all this but the world truly does change quite a bit over a few decades.

The song came from an article she read in New York Times about Child Abuse. I feel this song because my dad was an alcoholic and we tried to stay out of his way when he drunk or been drinking because he'd beat the crap out of us. We suffered in silence because we couldn't get help!!!!😓😓😓😓 . Her name is pronounced Ben-A-Tar

  •  2 ปีที่แล้ว

There is a live version on her greatest hits album, Best Shots, that has a prelude to this song, called “Suffer the Little Children” that can be hard to listen to because it is so emotional.
“Sweet Melissa, I often pray for you
I hope your suffering was brief
I hope the angels will watch
    Over all little children
Came for you and took you some place
    Beautiful and sweet”

Pat Benatar has some serious pipes! Her ”We Live for Love" shows off her operatic training. It's pronounced like it's spelled. Ben-a-tar. It's a lot easier than her birth name Andrzejewski.

This song was written in 1980 and we were just coming out of a decade that divorce was happening, children were to be seen and not heard and spankings and worse happened so alot of teenagers related to this song! Sad to say but true.
