- Setting 32 ft attic style trusses by myself on the garage shop build diy. How I set these homemade attic style trusses on my garage by myself. How to set truss rafters yourself. You can also do it if you have some equipment and get creative. I just took my time and braced everything very well. The biggest thing is to get started straight and plumb and over brace everything. It's a long video but I wanted to cover all the steps I could think of.
If I get enough requests for the truss drawings and material lists etc the link will be right here.
This is my diy 32 x 56 garage - shop build. I want to show you how to start building a garage or shop from the very start of just having a empty lot. Watch for future videos on this build.
• Bracing walls / Preppi... here is the previous video in the series about setting up the truss jib on the backhoe, and bracing everything getting ready for trusses.

Nice job. Only to be young again!! In my earlier days I built a 48'x 65' aircraft hangar. I built the walls in 12' panels fully sheathed on the slab then stood them up with a site built crane. Had a local truss company supply the trusses, hired a local builder to place them and sheath the roof. I figured it would take me more than a month to set the trusses and sheath the roof working alone. Bailed and sold the project before the real-estate crash in 02.
Good luck with the project, stay safe.
Thank you! Sounds like a fun project.
Awesome build series. As is all your other ones too. I just did a 12x16 shed using some of your ideas from your shed build. Love the detail you provided in this video.
Thank you so much!!
i like it,beautiful work cowboy🙏💕
Thank you so much! 😊
Nice job. Only to be young again!!
Thanks. Yes 😁
Awesome work, some blocks cut at the exact spacing would work nice to nail sequentially as your putting the trusses up. Just speeds it up and gives you something to nail straight into from the side. Thanks for the video
Thanks! Yeah you totally could. I just wanted to always push against the blocks from the front the way I was setting them so that wouldn’t work as well for me but you totally could. 👍🏻 thank you.
@@SmartEasyDIYer yes the block’s would stay in place and you would nail through the truss into it. Kind of hard to explain through text. did you get the sho all done?
Nice ok. I’m not sure what sho is but I think I did get it done. 😁
@@SmartEasyDIYer sorry I think shop
Ahh makes sense. No worries. I almost got it done.
Thank you for the vids and the info
You’re welcome! Thanks for the comment. 😁
Nice work. Maybe this was discussed in the video but why didn’t you just have the trusses made so the plywood gussets don’t interfere with your layout? 😊
Yes I think it was discussed a few videos back when I was building them, mostly cost savings. It was a lot of work but saved me 5k on the truss package.
@@SmartEasyDIYergotcha. You’re sure doing nice work! 😊
Thanks I appreciate it!
Wow😮
😁👍
What pitch is the roof. I thought about doing attic trusses but am on the fence.
Mine is 8/12 pitch. Yeah definitely need to weigh out all the time it takes vs what you’re saving.
Wow, you've been busy, I have not been watching since your shed build. I noticed the red Pex pipe so I guess that you are going to heat the slab, what will you use to heat the boiler? Years ago I built a wood stove with an old steam cleaner coil on top to heat up a spa. I'm going to see what videos you have on shop to catch up, I'm jealous...
Thanks Peter! Yes I have been busy. This one had taken me a long time to build and also to edit all the footage. Been so busy with life in general you know… yes for now I’m just planning to heat with mini split heat pump and see how that goes but I wanted to do the radiant tubing in case I want to go that route. Not sure heat source yet. Either propane boiler or electric probably since I don’t have much time to cut firewood. Those outside boilers do work awesome tho! Thanks for the comment.
Do you sell these plans? I have 30x40 concrete pad and I would love to build my own attic trusses. What are the fastners and guns you are using? Can you do a video on your equipment?
I don’t have plans yet. I hope to eventually. I do show the whole process and tools in a few previous truss build videos in this series. Thanks
Yeah, we'd be interested in purchasing your blueprint. Let us know the price and where to contact you.
We recently had to remodel a friend's bathroom. Well, you know how projects go. As we did the tear out we saw a crack that ran from the bathroom into the bedroom and stopped at the hallway. The builder drove heavy equipment on their foundation. You clearly saw the tire marks. The crack was 1 3/8" thick then tapered. Aside from that, they had steel studs throughout their house. (Nightmare)
You know how that goes, one project leads to uncovered issues.
As I asked what was your budget again...
Thanks! Yes I know how those projects go. 😅
I appreciate the feedback and support! I’ll put a link in the video description and let you know once I put it together.
It’s been 2 years since I started so I’ll have to figure out exactly what I spent. I didn’t really have a budget. I plan to figure out material list to get it framed up and cost breakdown to get the exterior enclosed. Thanks again.
What is the roof pitch on those attic trusses?
8/12 on these.
@SmartEasyDIYer awesome that's what I thought! What's the room width upstairs with them?
Yeah, so on mine it was 14’ wide inside upstairs. 8’ tall in the middle of the section. 5 feet at the lower end of the slope so i’m 6 feet tall and I can pretty much stand against the bottom without bumping my head if I stand sideways and my shoulders touch first. It was a lot of room.
I saw a "room in truss" standing upright ready to be swung into place. as it was standing on the ground I thought "what if it was the first floor of a single story home"... no walls just roof no attic... build it over a crawlspace or basement....kind of like the A frame homes you see in the mountains. I am thinking cost savings. you could not build a very big home but i would think a pretty inexpensive one.....
Yeah that’s interesting I didn’t think of it that way before. I’m guessing for the space you get accordingly it would be cheaper to stick frame it but then yes you would either need to be able to span a wider area clear span or have supports in the middle underneath. Interesting thought. Thanks
Really good video .But don't do it alone your not saving money , hydralic leak on the tractor your in for a world of hurt .
I'm coming back from a damaged nerve in the leg .
Thank you. I didn’t really have much of a choice in my situation, but I know what you mean. It’s good to be careful.
You talk too much. You make it difficult to watch the videos.
That’s for the feedback. Usually if I don’t talk enough about the process, then people say I don’t explain things well enough. Perhaps you have a lot of construction experience. You also have to think about people that don’t have a lot of previous experience.
