Sorry if it came across as harsh. The PC community's defaulting to mentioning steam just really irks me. They complain about the epic game story (partially rightly so) and then defend a quasi monopoly that every gamer needs to subject themselves to since HL2 started forcing it upon PC players.
Hey GmanLives, I'm the guy who mistakenly sent you a comment on 'business email'. I tried to use discord but I am a fish out of water. I tried to send you a message and friend you. Seems vaguely familiar to FB but I couldn't or didn't know how to send you a message. So I just sent a message to General Reuben (?), I guess, to anybody out there to help me. Some things about the weapons:
1) Using the axe in Soul Mode underwater pulls you forward like a propeller. Seriously.
2) Staff of the Azure Orb homing is pretty damn good. Soul mode version does not home and is much shorter range, but has one of the highest DPS in the game.
3) Whisper's Edge can already pass through enemies in normal mode if you only hit them with the edge. This does less damage but it can pass through an entire group of enemies this way. Soul version bounces too. Turns hallways into blenders.
4) Voltride's chain lightning does flat damage which is usually enough to overkill smaller enemies in one hit to keep it going, but might kill bigger ones without popping them. Soul mode just turns it into a coherent beam with higher DPS. Overkill stays the same.
5) One of the planets the Celestial Claw can summon is Earth.
6) Star of Torment's soul mode spike balls do splash damage as they explode on impact and send shards everywhere.
7) You can kill yourself with the Aeternum's black hole.
something unmentioned, the celestial claws soul mode chucks stars.
And each enemy is more vulnerable to a certain weapon.
Just don't let Superman know about that time when Krypton was used with the Celestial Claw.
You earn an achievement for firing of Earth with the Celestial Claw.
i learned about the aeternums black hole the hard way. was fighting the final boss and just frantically trying to do damage when i accidentally enabled soul mode. realized i was firing black holes which was not what i wanted and just went "OH... shit" and turn to run right into my own black hole.

Not every triple a game is Fallout 76. For honor, horzon,tomb raider. These are all great games

Both this and Dusk are straight up some of the best games I've played in years. I hope to see more from this developer.
3:10 If you are genuinely curious, I believe the weapon itself resembles a scimitar. Mechanically speaking, it looks like a faster version of the warrior's Quietus from Hexen, which was a ton of fun.
Scimitar is just a European non-scientific name for Eastern sabers like a shamshir. Just in case - it is definitely not a falchion since it is not broadening towards the tip and the blade is in significantly slimmer. It is definitely on the very short end of the spectrum, bringing it closer to fascine knives in length. So it's a short sabre or a curved single-edge fascine knife.

Dude, a gun that shoots freaking planets is one of the most creative weapons that I've ever seen in a game. Old school/Boomer Shooters have got some amazing releases over the last few years. I'm so glad that we are seeing this huge revival of Boomer Shooters..

I honestly love this games level design, I've been using the aether cheat to noclip through levels after I beat them so I can study their level architecture and design. This game is just another massive inspiration for my own game.
8:51 I've never understood the hate that On a Rail gets. You are basically using a vehicle to get somewhere and you can make stops along the way to find secret stashes or new interesting areas to explore. I mean, it's not that different from chapters like Water Hazard and Highway 17 from Half-life 2 or Under the Radar from Half Life 2 Episode 2 and i don't see people hating those.
I feel like the celestial claw was inspired by that moment in the Infinity Gauntlet comics when the celestials start throwing planets at Thanos, especially considering the fact that its called the CELESTIAL claw. It's so epic, and I've always wanted to see something like this in either a game or the MCU so this is pretty awesome to see

Man. That first Forge level...the one with rain in fog was absolutely amazing to me. I loved the vibe and the look-everything about it. I’m shocked to hear someone complain about it. And almost every instance where you come across enemies on a narrow walkway...you can just back up to a wider are and snipe the enemies off the platforms. I had no issue. What a sick ass game. So good!
I came back to this video just to see if he mentioned that level. I’m finally playing this and I could’ve wandered around that level for days.
I am also complaining about entire 'Forge' faction. Especially in this level I was sniped by several laser drones. Thankfully lasers aren't fast enough and I had time to avoid it.

The last couple of years, dusk, wolfenstein, doom, amid evil, max action, rage 2 remind us how great FPSs always will be
Reminds me of how great FPS were and are now just being copied. Not much better than the AAA stuff out now, but at least it's there I guess for people wanting to relive inferior experiences of gaming's greats. -I'm not saying the games aren't good, but they do just seems like lesser copies in my mind*
Love this game. Probably one of my favorite games ever. Taking my sweet time with it.
A few points:
- Wish there more complex environmental puzzles
- Wish we could push objects
- Wish they focused on the alchemy more e.g. the star of torment could put out fire torches/fire barricades or freeze water into traversable paths. There could have been portals which need activating by the celestial claw too. They could have played with that more as the weapon variety feels largely pointless
- You can't see your own shadow
6:11 - The regular shotgun is better than the double in Doom II when you're low on shells and/or when you need to pick off low-level monsters from a distance but don't have bullets.
8:15 - Actually they're like flying polyps which weren't in _Call of Cthulhu_ (but were in the game _Dark Corners of the Earth_ ).
8:20 - Nope, but it's impossible to pronounce Cthulhu with human vocal cords, so anyone who tries to correct you is a prig.
11:13 - Reminds me of _SEUM_ .
3:10 I'm "that one guy" to tell you that technically you are correct. The sword in game looks like a sub class of the Saber type swords called a "Scimitar" a curved sword from the Middle East.
Did you see those guys from Hammerfell? They have curved swords. Curved. Swords.

Awesome review as always. You touched on some great points in game design that I've agreed with for a long time, too(like the urchins just having to run into you to do damage or the enemies attacking you on the skinny platforms).

Just started playing this and finished the first area (Astral Equinox). Really fuckin' good so far. Feels really old school while not looking like dog shit (Strafe & Dusk). Looking forward to Ion Maiden, or whatever they may rename it as, as well. The fact that it's only $23 at the moment on launch is a bloody bargain. A far cry away from far less enjoyable AAA games that are $80 or $90.
The cool thing about the Astral Equinox and Solar Solstice episodes is that lorewise they were both set on the same planet or dimension, only one half worshipped the Moon and the other the Sun.

Project Warlock, Dusk, Ion Maiden aka Ion Fury, and Amid Evil...... Such a good new game with classic old element, art style and mechanic ever released in these modern days. Damn, we need more sweet PC game like this.... :-)

The green sword/Whisper's Edge is basically an improved Quietus from Hexen. They did a really good job of making modern tributes to some of the best FPS weapons.

This was an amazing review/detailed analysis Gman - so in dept covering literally every single aspect of the game.
And goes to show how diverse the episodes and game is, episode 3 was actually my personal favourite, followed by the forges.

I actually just realized after reading the codex that there is an homage to Quake in episode 3. That large plant that spits acid at you is actually called Shrub Niggurath.
This game is absolutely gorgeous. Just bought it on Steam. Highly recommended.

A steam friend of mine named xcloudx01 actually worked on controller support for this game. I'll have to play it some time. Kinda looks like half life mixed with skyrim.

This game is amazing! It's a little rough at times, but if you've been around the RetroFPS genre a few times it won't bother you. I especially loved the visuals and the controls were fluid af.

I wish they would remake Hexen II. That had the best level design and a very intriguing overarching story. You had to travel to 4 different continents, and each one had one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Really badass. If they did this game today with an immersive story like you would have in a Dragonage or Elder Scrolls type of game, it would be epic.
Great game. Just finished it on the "hard" difficulty. Last Level was insane :D Great level design.
No weapon becomes weak... Each weapon does extra damage to certain enemies. The Staff of the Azure Orb for example deals 25% extra damage to watchers and double damage to flame wraiths.
There should have been a joke easter with the planet gun. There should have been a 1% or .1& chance that "Earth" shows up and after shooting it would be a instance joke game over😁

To add on the Celestial Rocket Launcher, you CAN summon the Earth. I think it's rare tho as I've only played for 30 hours so far

I know it's intentional to look like a retro game, but I don't like the UI and the FXs, I can still feel it's like an Unreal Engine's bought assets. That orb ball staff could do some work.
It's a mixed of high definition and clunky colors, at some point, It's like the developer is confused. The "Theme", I don't know if this is a dark game or happy-go-cheerful-magic game.
The movements are perfect, pretty much retro-shooter. Quake, Unreal Tournament, etc. (I'm just saying my favorites here that I remembered)
The name's pretty creative though, Amid Evil, a play on word Medieval.
It's a 7/10, because I know some of the aspects can still be improved.
I can see some of the weapons (if not all) are inspired by HeXen, also a game back in my childhood times.
Gameplay is always more important than graphics, so let's bump that score to an 8 or a 9
And it's a hybrid of dark fantasy and the vibrant colors that can still come from a fantastical world

I believe the sword is a Scimitar and all of the weapon types and even their colors are similar to those found in Heretic
I still feel that the Sacred Path was better than the Forges. Gosh, I hated the Forges
That sabre like weapon is exactly like the final weapon (4) in Hexen for the Barbarian.
