Amid Evil and its DLC is easily my favorite in this modern crop of boomer shooters. Excellent level design, great music, great enemies, cool weapons, and graphics settings I could fiddle with forever.
New Blood have been knocking it out of the park with their throw-back FPS games. Dusk and Amid Evil are both excellent, and Ultrakill is straight up the best FPS I've played since Blood.
Apart from Amid Evil. My rankings will be entire opposite. Hexen being on top and Heretic 2 being on the bottom.I was kind of disappointed when I saw that they made heretic 2 in 3rd person. Heretic 1 was so good.
I only played Hexen on PS1 back in 1997 but I loved the atmosphere, music, and general gameplay. At the time I had the patience to manage quite a bit of the maze exploration on my own. I just picked up the series on Steam to try the others and then came here to look at reviews, so I’m glad to see my experience is only going up from Hexen!
I know this series is probably less of a view bringer being more niche, but I appreciate it! I have never played this series, I probably never will. There just isn't enough time to play everything. But I love learning about different series and getting a general idea of their impact and legacy. Edit: After finishing the video, I plan to someday play Heretic 2! Looks a little rough around the edges, but one of my favorite games of all time is Drakan The Ancient Gates, so I think I'll be able to handle it (:
You should have added Graven into that lineup as a modern throwback. You also missed the Hexen II mission pack: Portal of Praevus albeit rights to this expansion is with Activision and you needed to get it when it came out or pay a premium to get it off eBay.
Honestly, I see the flaws, but Hexen and its add-on are my favorites in the series. However, the best part about these games (Heretic, too) are community-created WADs, I absolutely love stumbling upon new levels created by fans, they’re often even better than the originals.
thank you! I sadly havent played a single Trine game or Gauntlet besides the original. I prioritize patreon requests first as well so it might be a bit. Thank you for watching!
There is one more thing that I didn't like is the changes that they made. Hexen 1 and Hexen 2 is so different. It feels.weird playing them back to back
Played all, I didn't finished only Hexen 2 because i had enough of idiotic backtracking - it was the worst. Second Hexen 1 - finished with walkthrough, addon done without it (its easier). Good game but irritating (backtracking mastery). Heretic 2 dissapointed, at beginning, but afterall it is very good game. But The best of is Heretic 1 - i often come back and replay IT.
Throw fireball at me, but I really didn´t like the labyrinth design of the maps in boomer shooters (so yeah, I didn´t liked even Doom, but his saving grace was the fun combat, so I pushed myself to progress). But man, I love these games becuse of combat! GRAVEN isn´t well recieved, but it nailed the map design to my liking and it had the right feeling of Heretic, Hexen etc. I know I might be in the minority here, but it was quite good game - minus the bugs and other problems.
I hate the term doom clone so much just because it was one of the first games to do what it did it doesn't make games after it doom clones i saw a guy say that dusk was a doom clone and if it's like that call every boomer fps a doom clone because you might aswell do that i mean i dont see people call doom a wolfenstein 3d clone Shadow warrior duke nukem serious sam hexen blood heretic quake wolfenstein dusk ultrakill gloomwood all doom clones (btw dont wanna sound like a salty heretic fan ive never played it)
Yeah im not as fond of the first Hexen either. Plus i miss corvus so thats minus another point. One thing i dont like about both heretic and hexen is all the monstera take too mamy hits to die, even the common weak enemies.
Wow that's rather unexpected. I never played the Hexen games because they don't seem appealing. Heretic is one of the worse retro shooters that I've played. Mainly because its inferior to Doom in every way. Amid Evil? Good game but its very rough around the edges.
The first Heretic game will always be my favorite.
Amid Evil and its DLC is easily my favorite in this modern crop of boomer shooters. Excellent level design, great music, great enemies, cool weapons, and graphics settings I could fiddle with forever.
As an ultrakill fanboy you’re not wrong
hell yeah great choice for a video, was not expecting this

a new blood ranking video would be a cool chance to talk about amid evil again
Hexen feels like a Metroidvania using the Doom Engine.

Goodness grace I have never heard of that series before

all these game are so cool. Played all! Haretic 2 was super cool 3d and good story at that time! Played until the end!

My fav from the series is the original Heretic. Actually its one of my fav games of all time.
Grat video, I had no idea Hexen 2 existed either!
You gotta be crapping me. It’s an amazing game with a great atmosphere.
Yay! Great video! Could you please rank the Trine, Gauntlet and Bayonetta games next?
thank you! I sadly havent played a single Trine game or Gauntlet besides the original. I prioritize patreon requests first as well so it might be a bit. Thank you for watching!
Berserk Mode was a good game inspired by this series.
Like always taking the reccomendation and getting amid evil on steam! I love boomer shooters, thanks man.

These games were sick
Nooooo!! Hexen at worst!??!!?

Amid Evil probably has best retro engine I have seen so far
Uses unreal engine
@@jej_x everything does :D
@@GorcStew rare for a retro inspired game.
3 switches remain.

Fuck doom
You should add Graven...
To rank last sadly
Would love to see you do a big list on boomer shooters. Probably my favorite genre of games.
Yeah im not as fond of the first Hexen either. Plus i miss corvus so thats minus another point. One thing i dont like about both heretic and hexen is all the monstera take too mamy hits to die, even the common weak enemies.
I like Amid Evil but man the enemy design straight up sucks, like something out of starfox.
I beat Hexen when I was a kid on PS1 with zero guides, youre just not good
Wtf is this lmao
Wow that's rather unexpected.
I never played the Hexen games because they don't seem appealing. Heretic is one of the worse retro shooters that I've played. Mainly because its inferior to Doom in every way.
Amid Evil? Good game but its very rough around the edges.
