I own physical copies of both games... I have to admit that I was excited to see the word redux for a minute though. Thought that maybe gog had finally got the rights after forever.
A shame about the IP hell that this game is trapped in. Activision, Sierra, Vivendi Universal, Fox and Monolith all have no idea who owns the rights to the game and it's apparently not worth the lawyer fees for any of them to make a claim. A shame because for all its faults, it really was a game that had 110% charm.
Actually, be glad nobody is ruining it by making it a franchise of low effort, low risk copy paste characterless game like most new reboots or sequels. God forbid these studios or the likes of EA pushing sjw agenda.
If Impossible Creatures resurfaced on Steam after years languishing in IP ownership hell, No One Lives Forever will eventually be revived at any moment.
Just think, GoldenEye 64 remaster is out there and pretty much 98% complete and it isn't releasing because of the rights. MGM, Nintendo, Microsoft, Rare, and Activision

@Sursurk nah dont agree. I had Skyrim on PC when it came out and ran it on Max settings, no issues. Now I have the Special Edition on PS4 Pro which looks WAY better then the PC version did. Also, why not take a look at Yakuza Kiwami 2, The Last of Us Remastered, Crash Bandicoot, Okami HD, Halo: MasterChief Collection (specifically Halo 2), Burnout Paradise Remastered... Oh that's right these are console games... That's because PC isn't the be all end all, and PC does not get everything good. PC only gamers miss out. Your still waiting on Spiderman and RDR2. There are significantly less PC Remasters cause some of the best shit only gets to console and doesn't get Remastered to PC . I ain't even gonna start on the quality of Nintendo games you miss out on. Unless of course you get it illegally and download 50 different programs and update the shit out them just to simulate a fuckin controller we just only need to switch on.

NOLF is a classic for sure. It took all the great things from James Bond (exotic locales, vehicle chases, gadgets) and made it all interactive. I always thought they did a great job with the texture work too. The game's very colorful.
Never got to play the sequel, but the first NOLF is one of the best unrecognized FPS games of all time. Also, in light of the Wolfenstein Youngblood blunder, it's great to be reminded of a game that had a female protagonist that WAS fun and likable!
It looks like the original and the sequel are free to download online. I was bored and searching stuff about this game and found a site of fans hosting the games online for free

I saw several comments here of people wondering how this game would look and play on the Source Engine, and I'm very interested in seeing that happen. I just found out about this game thanks to GmanLives and I'm currently trying to fix issues with the textures warping/stretching all over but the quality in this baffles me.
I bought a CD copy of the original a few months back at boy scout charity rummage sale along with a few other gems like Serious Sam: The First (and Second) Encounter, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, GUN, Area 51, a collection of the overhead GTA games, etc... I also got Blood II but ya know, "the less said about that game the better"
I always appreciated how the tone of this game knew when to take itself seriously. The feminist slant is well done and juxtaposes extremely well with the characters and goofy stereotypes, making them even funnier (in my opinion).
@@Ozzianman True, but I was referring to this being in the 1999-2000 timeframe. I'd imagine RTCW was in the works by the time NOLF came out but when the latter started development, I don't think RTCW existed as a concept back then or at least was just starting out.

This game/setting would be so awesome as an immersive sim-style game, taking the simulation and behavior of different systems to a deeper level and really let the different aspects of the gameplay shine.

I remember getting the demo on a PC Gamer disc and just being completely surprised by how well written and how fun it was. I still have game CDs and play it on my old laptop once in awhile. We need another NOLF!!

Played these back in the early 2000s, absolutely loved them for the action, the characters, the setting and the humor. Great vid. (Oh, and Cate Archer is such a babe. Damn.)
Great game too bad about the rights. Maybe someone will make a spiritual successor. My favorite part of the game was in NOLF2 the trailer park tornado battle. I played that scene more than once.
As the XIII Remake just came out, I fondly remember this game from back then. I remember fans of F.E.A.R. had been asking for either a sequel or a Remaster for years. But it was held back by the ones holding onto the IP. WB Games. I wonder who holds this IP, or Blood, Shogo. They all deserve more attention.
Nightdive tried very hard to get the games out just like a year or two ago, even had advertising ready for it. However the IP is old enough that it isn't in digital databases. The three companies that hold the various parts of the NOLF franchise are literally too lazy to look in their filing cabinets for their segments of the rights, which is why the NOLF re=releases fell through. At the time it was like Fox, Vivendi and WB that held the rights, something insane like that.
@@revenile Wow. No kidding! I got a lot of faith in Nightdive for what they got going-on lately. The NOLF could have been a gold mine for a franchise in so many avenues of entertainment, I'm amazed such a list of heavyweights would/could sleep on that.
@@imranmeco3393 sorry to say but I had some issues and alas could not actually play the games long enough to tell you. The mouse movement was extremely twitchy and the cutscenes kept cutting off sentences before anyone could finish what they were saying, among other things. The games just were not playable for me so I couldn't answer your question, sorry. :(
@@mohs7709 Ayy, no prob. Turns out it's the Š and Đ keys for my keyboard, which I certainly didn't expect. God knows what that's supposed to be on QWERTYs. Thankfully, I'm running it on a bit of a toaster, so it doesn't have those issues these games tend to have on modern PCs.
Thanks to your channel I was able to know about this masterpiece, still one of my favs old-school FPS A shame it went into this licensing hell, I feel like this game would nail a good remaster / graphic remake or hell, even a fookin movie. It would work wonders honestly.

You can't really talk about adaptive music systems without a HUGE shout out to Lucasarts iMUSE system. I think they were one of the first and the best. TIE fighter is the game that comes to mind that really nailed it with the adaptive music. It came out in 1994 - 6 years before NOLF I loved the Lithtech games. They were always colourful and fun, and pretty fast paced. ID games were technologically ground breaking but had that 'I live in my parents basement and only listen to Metallica' vibe to them. (I still think they are awesome though haha)
If you had the original CD release, they didn’t have enough content to fill the second CD so they instead added a red book audio mini-album with some brilliantly thematic tracks in the style of the 60s era, including a theme song for Cate Archer.
Great review. The first had a really memorable campaign, especially the level where you jump out of the plane. It also had so much humour. Love to see something like that come out now
I remember we played this on my friend's PC in like 2000/2001, and we giggled on most of this stuff in the game, I barely spoke English back then, but I understood funny stuff in there.
I like it. A game that doesn't take itself too seriously to capture a spy movie in the form of a game. I like the idea of somewhat random success in stealth also. It's how stealth tends to be irl. This in combination with random npc conversations adds to immersion. Stealth games have come a long way and their's plenty to learn from to make this a better game.
i really thought it was a remake from the title lol but yeah loved this game back in the day and it was one of a kind for what it was. Kate Archer is such a Babe XD
I like how a game from the 2000's has better audio for random NPC interactions than a million dollar AAA game developed in the late 2010's, like Far Cry. I first played this game on the PS2 because back in that era I did not have a very good PC. I remember thoroughly enjoying this on the PS2. At first I was put off by it because I thought it was a "game for girls", and I was more into stuff like GTA and MGS. But I was bored one day and decided to just try it out and it quickly became one of my favorites. I actually had no idea it was on PC so I think I'm gonna have to check that out.
I really hope the Licensing Issues for the Games get sorted out. Would love to own the Games on Steam as FPS and Stealth are two of My Favourite Genres. :( Fantastic Video as always, GMan! I agree, this era of games was great. Not a lot of variety in types of game forced developers to be more creative and unique. Now it's all camo's and scopes.
I remember seing a review of this game on tv and was sold right away. I was so excited about it, especially the parachute jumping part so I had to get it. It was one if the first pc games I payed full price for it. And honestly it was 100% worth it. Super fun game ! Plus it came with a game soundtrack CD!
This is actually the one and only game i fell in love with since it came out. It had its issues and it was frustrating at times but I find it to be a masterpiece, a really unique game like those you get the chance to play very rarely. I would be concerned it they’d do a third episode, they would ruin it for sure.
I KNEW I WASN'T CRAZY! For so damn long, I couldn't remember the name of the game. I just remember having it and playing it until I got stuck somewhere. Couldn't proceed through the level anymore so I left it alone. But I remember having fun playing it. Thank goodness to Matt.

Probably my all time favorite game. Besides fun to play, it just so witty and makes me laugh every time even though having played it at least 10 times already. I remember the game was included with our first Windows XP computer and I probably wouldn't have known about this game otherwise. So I feel very lucky for that.
I really loved that engine they used back then for these games. It was the same for AVP2 and Tron 2.0 if I'm not mistaken. It just always had such colorful crisp textures and lighting, and great character animation for the time.
A bit late to the party but this just popped up in my recommended list and the 'redux' grabbed me. NOLF 1 & 2 were played to death back in the day and after watching this I've dug them out of the library, found my usb dvd drive & will be reliving that 60's vibe for a few days.

In NOLF 1 you can collect intelligence items too. They upgrade Health, Armor and ammo capacity(not sure). I love that in the first one you can replay every mission with the weapons\gear you have unlocked...but sadly not in NOLF 2, you must use cheat's for that.
and this is why i didnt liked the sequel its not as good as the first one thr replayability is the reason why i didnt uninstalled it same with other games like soldier of fortune and hitman series
15:07 i will never forget those fucking laser rooms. i got stuck at the final room, retrying it for over 50 times and actually managed to get past the lasers without using the hatch you were supposed to go down in before the room.
FPS was never my favorite genre, but this was absolutely my favorite FPS. Good balance of stealth, and plot, and a great tone. Most FPS are forgotten by me in a matter of hours, but that is one of the few that still crosses my mind occasionally. Almost all game genres look exponentially better now, but sadly, they have devolved in most other ways. It seems like around 2000 games really peaked, imo. They very often lean entirely on their visuals now, feel very generic, and much of the art and craft has been relegated to the dust-bin of history. It is no accident that classic games of the era, like Vampire: The Masquerade, and FFvii, are getting shiny new graphical overhauls. Perhaps they will be fantastic, or perhaps they are just lazy opportunities to capitalize on name-recognition and avoid having to create any new concepts or original narratives.
Shogo and Blood 2 felt like properties that were forced out 6 months early. NOLF felt like they had JUST enough time to finish the game, but not so much as to bloat it up with stupid "Designer" game features.
You gotta admit the cutscenes in No One Lives Forever are quite something, I remember playing these games as a kid and loved em. Can't believe GmanLives actually reviewed the game too aha.

It did improve for a while, but the seventh generation brought a battlefield (heh) of casualties.

@@imranmeco3393 sorry to say but I had some issues and alas could not actually play the games long enough to tell you. The mouse movement was extremely twitchy and the cutscenes kept cutting off sentences before anyone could finish what they were saying, among other things. The games just were not playable for me so I couldn't answer your question, sorry. :(
@@mohs7709 Ayy, no prob. Turns out it's the Š and Đ keys for my keyboard, which I certainly didn't expect. God knows what that's supposed to be on QWERTYs.
Thankfully, I'm running it on a bit of a toaster, so it doesn't have those issues these games tend to have on modern PCs.

You can't really talk about adaptive music systems without a HUGE shout out to Lucasarts iMUSE system. I think they were one of the first and the best.
TIE fighter is the game that comes to mind that really nailed it with the adaptive music. It came out in 1994 - 6 years before NOLF
I loved the Lithtech games. They were always colourful and fun, and pretty fast paced.
ID games were technologically ground breaking but had that 'I live in my parents basement and only listen to Metallica' vibe to them.
(I still think they are awesome though haha)

It's artstyle and tone would fit right in with Team Fortress 2, to be frank.
If you had the original CD release, they didn’t have enough content to fill the second CD so they instead added a red book audio mini-album with some brilliantly thematic tracks in the style of the 60s era, including a theme song for Cate Archer.

Great review. The first had a really memorable campaign, especially the level where you jump out of the plane. It also had so much humour. Love to see something like that come out now

I remember we played this on my friend's PC in like 2000/2001, and we giggled on most of this stuff in the game, I barely spoke English back then, but I understood funny stuff in there.

I like it. A game that doesn't take itself too seriously to capture a spy movie in the form of a game. I like the idea of somewhat random success in stealth also. It's how stealth tends to be irl. This in combination with random npc conversations adds to immersion. Stealth games have come a long way and their's plenty to learn from to make this a better game.

I like how a game from the 2000's has better audio for random NPC interactions than a million dollar AAA game developed in the late 2010's, like Far Cry. I first played this game on the PS2 because back in that era I did not have a very good PC. I remember thoroughly enjoying this on the PS2. At first I was put off by it because I thought it was a "game for girls", and I was more into stuff like GTA and MGS. But I was bored one day and decided to just try it out and it quickly became one of my favorites. I actually had no idea it was on PC so I think I'm gonna have to check that out.
The cinematics were the highlight for me. I actually enjoyed watching them more than playing the game.
I really hope the Licensing Issues for the Games get sorted out. Would love to own the Games on Steam as FPS and Stealth are two of My Favourite Genres. :( Fantastic Video as always, GMan! I agree, this era of games was great. Not a lot of variety in types of game forced developers to be more creative and unique. Now it's all camo's and scopes.
I remember seing a review of this game on tv and was sold right away. I was so excited about it, especially the parachute jumping part so I had to get it. It was one if the first pc games I payed full price for it. And honestly it was 100% worth it. Super fun game ! Plus it came with a game soundtrack CD!

This is actually the one and only game i fell in love with since it came out. It had its issues and it was frustrating at times but I find it to be a masterpiece, a really unique game like those you get the chance to play very rarely. I would be concerned it they’d do a third episode, they would ruin it for sure.
Is this some kind of hd texture patch? Don't remember this game being this sharp.

For so damn long, I couldn't remember the name of the game. I just remember having it and playing it until I got stuck somewhere. Couldn't proceed through the level anymore so I left it alone. But I remember having fun playing it. Thank goodness to Matt.

Probably my all time favorite game. Besides fun to play, it just so witty and makes me laugh every time even though having played it at least 10 times already.
I remember the game was included with our first Windows XP computer and I probably wouldn't have known about this game otherwise. So I feel very lucky for that.

I really loved that engine they used back then for these games. It was the same for AVP2 and Tron 2.0 if I'm not mistaken. It just always had such colorful crisp textures and lighting, and great character animation for the time.

A bit late to the party but this just popped up in my recommended list and the 'redux' grabbed me. NOLF 1 & 2 were played to death back in the day and after watching this I've dug them out of the library, found my usb dvd drive & will be reliving that 60's vibe for a few days.

No way. NOLF 2 is half the game of NOLF. It seemed more like an expansion pack with better textures instead of a full NOLF sequel.

In NOLF 1 you can collect intelligence items too. They upgrade Health, Armor and ammo capacity(not sure).
I love that in the first one you can replay every mission with the weapons\gear you have unlocked...but sadly not in NOLF 2, you must use cheat's for that.

thr replayability is the reason why i didnt uninstalled it same with other games like soldier of fortune and hitman series
15:07 i will never forget those fucking laser rooms.
i got stuck at the final room, retrying it for over 50 times and actually managed to get past the lasers without using the hatch you were supposed to go down in before the room.
FPS was never my favorite genre, but this was absolutely my favorite FPS. Good balance of stealth, and plot, and a great tone. Most FPS are forgotten by me in a matter of hours, but that is one of the few that still crosses my mind occasionally. Almost all game genres look exponentially better now, but sadly, they have devolved in most other ways. It seems like around 2000 games really peaked, imo. They very often lean entirely on their visuals now, feel very generic, and much of the art and craft has been relegated to the dust-bin of history.
It is no accident that classic games of the era, like Vampire: The Masquerade, and FFvii, are getting shiny new graphical overhauls. Perhaps they will be fantastic, or perhaps they are just lazy opportunities to capitalize on name-recognition and avoid having to create any new concepts or original narratives.
Shogo and Blood 2 felt like properties that were forced out 6 months early. NOLF felt like they had JUST enough time to finish the game, but not so much as to bloat it up with stupid "Designer" game features.
You gotta admit the cutscenes in No One Lives Forever are quite something, I remember playing these games as a kid and loved em. Can't believe GmanLives actually reviewed the game too aha.
