- We've been waiting for the right time to pull the trigger on this one. With Coldplay's new album Music of the Spheres out in the world this week, the time is now. This is bound to be a painful experience for a certain member of our panel, potentially dredging up a lot of heartache and disappointment.
Will the guys find anything redeeming beyond the first few albums or will this just be a big waste of time? Stay tuned...

Coldplay are a British pop band formed in London in 1996. The band consists of vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and pianist Chris Martin; lead guitarist Jonny Buckland; bassist Guy Berryman; drummer Will Champion; and creative director Phil Harvey. They met at University College London and began playing music together from 1996 to 1998, first calling themselves Pectoralz and then Starfish.
Coldplay released two EPs, Safety in 1998 and The Blue Room in 1999. The latter was their first release under a major record label, Parlophone. Coldplay achieved worldwide fame with the release of the song "Yellow" in 2000, followed in the same year by their debut album Parachutes, which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The band's second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), was released to critical acclaim. Their next record, X&Y, was the best-selling album worldwide of 2005; the Brian Eno-produced fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), was the best-selling album of that year and earned the band three Grammy Awards. In 2011, Coldplay released their fifth studio album, Mylo Xyloto, which topped the charts in over 34 countries and was the UK's best-selling rock album of 2011. The band have since released Ghost Stories (2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019) and Music of the Spheres (2021).
Coldplay have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. They have won numerous awards throughout their career, including nine Brit Awards, seven MTV Video Music Awards, eight MTV Europe Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards from 35 nominations. The band's first three albums-Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), and X&Y (2005)-are among the best-selling albums in UK chart history.
In December 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted the group the fourth-best artist of the 2000s and Q magazine included the group in their Artists of the Century list. Coldplay have supported various social and political causes, such as Oxfam's Make Trade Fair campaign and Amnesty International. They have also performed at charity projects, including Band Aid 20, Live 8, Global Citizen Festival, Sound Relief, Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, One Love Manchester, The Secret Policeman's Ball, Sport Relief and the UK Teenage Cancer Trust.

The boys trashing the bejesus out of Headful of Dreams. This is what we come for!
Well deserved, in my opinion.
It's a great album
@@strikerbowls791ha
No, i come for the good things.
It's terrible💩
"Their need to be loved is so strong they can't take any chances any more." Interesting observation Joe.
Maybe not an actual observation so much as an assertion based on the music.
My favorite albums are their first two and I don't think they were taking any chances there really.
@@frodofraggins I think parachutes is horseshit but AROBTTH is pretty good. But no, never good lyrics, and never much in the way of innovation. That's why I think Mylo Xyloto is their best, because since they can't make anything interesting, at least that album has pretty good pop music.
They’ve had two very good non-album tracks that invoke their earlier, more tasteful sound; “All I Can Think About Is You” (2017) and “Ghost Story” (2014). Check them out. PS: agreed on “Coloratura.” It is the best thing they’ve done since Viva.
I never was particularly attached to Coldplay's first two albums back in the day so I never felt "betrayed" when they changed their sound the way some people do.
In my opinion, Coldplay's first four album run is pretty fantastic. After that, it's hit or miss, but I don't think they've made a full blow stinker yet. They're a really good band and I like a lot of their music but I hope they pivot back towards alternative rock in the 2020s. Though given how they had their second No. 1 recently looks like that probably won't happen.
My ranking would be:
1. Viva La Vida (5/5)
2. A Rush of Blood to the Head (5/5)
3. X&Y (4.5/5)
4. Parachutes (4/5)
5. Mylo Xyloto (3/5)
6. Ghost Stories (3/5)
7. A Headful of Dreams (2.5/5)
8. Music for the Spheres (2.5/5)
9. Everyday Life (2/5)
Edit: Meteora by Linkin Park was much bigger than A Rush of Blood to the Head commercially in 03-04, at least worldwide. American Idiot too. Hell, X&Y and Viva La Vida were bigger in their years of release. I'd say Only by the Night by Kings of Leon was really the largest big undeniably rock album that got tons of attention from the mainstream.
Chris Martin said their last album will be "back to basics" which i guess saying that they will make it a more acoustic album
He talked about some acoustic ballads that were leftovers from parachutes sessions in an interview recently.
I think they'll reuse leftover acoustic ballads from Parachutes and finish them for their last album "Coldplay"
Been looking forward to this, even though you yanked me away from getting into awesome 70s Yes and made me listen to the late period Coldplay albums I hadn't heard... It's still been fun. Posting this comment moments before watching because I thought about my ranking all weekend:
1. A Rush of Blood to the Head (5)
2. Viva la Vida (4.5)
3. Parashutes (4)
4. Mylo Xyloto (3.5)
5. Ghost Stories (3.5)
6. X&Y (3)
7. Everyday Life (3)
8. A Head Full of Dreams (2.5)
9. Music of the Spheres (2)
Wow, your list is the first one that matches mine exactly!
For me, the first 3 albums (Parachutes, Rush, X&Y) embodied what I loved about Coldplay - melancholic, atmospheric pop-rock.
Then Viva la Vida happened, and I hated the clean-lines, upbeat aesthetic and explicit pop overtones (thanks Brian Eno). I stopped paying attention at that point.
Bro? Viva la Vida is their best work, Brian Eno did great work
@@strikerbowls791 Nah this guy is right. It took away their original sound and vibe and went for over-production and pretentiousness. Way big step down in songwriting and performances. Eno isn't enough to make a great album.
@@mck7646 You should be more respectful towards Eno considering he helped make a lot of musicians popular in the 70s and 80s
Agreed. They totally lost me with that album, it was the beginning of the end.

7. Ghost Stories
8. A Head Full of Dreams
9. Music of the Spheres ( coloratura is Acc amazing tho)
Music of Spheres is utter crap, unlistenable.
Loved 'Parachutes', I bought it the first week of release and played it to death, for me a 10/10 album, this sadly remains the only Coldplay album that I love...
Yes, I pretty much agree with this.
@@amnril They argueably have the greatest 2nd album by a band. A rush of blood to the head. i went off them after X and Y. Total respect to the band members seem like great fellas but the music of late is forgettable.
@@Alpha_7227 yes, A Rush Of Blood was very good too, I just prefer the heartfelt feel of Parachutes and what it meant me when it released as I truly hit the spot.
Yeah, Parachutes is the only one I love. I was really excited about 'Rush Of Blood' when it came out, but it just didn't grab me, though I persevered with it. I went back and listened to both the other day...Parachutes is still amazing, but I was pleasantly surprised by 'Rush Of Blood', it's better than I remember, though it still lost my attention as the album went on. Parachutes NEVER lost my attention.
I saw them on the tour that promoted Head Full of Dreams, and they put on a GREAT live show. That being said, I don't remember a single song from the album.
I was a big fan of Coldplay had a really distinctive sound and visuals for a rock band at this time. Over the years, I've heard less about Coldplay's music and more about Chris's marriage to Gwenneth Paltrow.
For me, the group could do no wrong until I heard Viva La Vida. I remember that being played in a ton of commercials and by the time the album arrived, I was over it. I was living in California at this time and my roommates camped outside to buy this album (remember I was over it).
We were all disappointed with the lack of freshness with that one. I decided to check out Coldplay's 2014 album, after watching them do a lot of promotion for it. I was surprised at how pop-sounding Magic.
I thought I was listening to Jason Mraz or Jack Johnson. I did buy the entire album, but I wound up being very disappointed with the odd mix of techno music and the rock elements of the album.
To me, this would have worked better in the late 80s from the way it sounded. I also e remember that Chris Martin tried to help Beyonce protest at the Superbowl (i started to actually like Beyonce because she made a statement like the public enemy.
I felt like Martin's added part was unnecessary. While they are still around, I also enjoyed All American Rejects, Yellowcard, and Switchfoot (they took from the same playbook IMHO.). Thanks for the review!
I'm surprised how many people say they don't take chances. They've never really made the same record twice. "Coloratura" off the new record is one of their best songs in my opinion. I was a fan at the beginning and I still buy all their records. They may not always do things I like, but they're always trying something different. Here's my list:
1. A Rush of Blood to the Head
2. Parachutes
3. Viva La Vida
4. Ghost Stories
5. Mylo Xyloto
6. Everyday Life
7. Music of the Spheres
8. X & Y
9. A Head Full of Dreams
Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, and Viva la Vida are the only Coldplay albums you need.
I like X&Y and Ghost Stories as well but I agree that the quality is not as good as those 3 albums you mentioned.
Parachutes is overrated, it has like maybe three songs worth listening to
Only bought Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head and that's all I need from Coldplay.
I loved the first two albums (though I wasn't down with Parachutes, initially), was "okay' with next two and I detested mylo xyloto (and Paradise), and stopped listening.
1. A Rush of Blood to the Head (*****)
2. Parchutes (****)

My Coldplay regret: Back in 2009, we went to go see Coldplay at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion which is like 1/3 seats and 2/3 lawn. We had lawn seats and got there early because it was sold out and you need to establish your area or you'll get crowded in. So we got there and right near the front is a cordoned off area in the lawn (just some sticks and tape) and there was nobody around it. My gf (now wife) said should we sit by that, and I was like "Nah, I don't know what's going on there maybe something is wrong with the ground there or maybe something is going to be put there to block the view. About 2/3 way through the show, the lights were put out. And guess who pops up to play in that little area? Now every time we go to Cynthia Woods, I get reminded, "Remember how we could have seen Coldplay from two feet away, but YOU didn't want to sit there."
I agree about Paradise, awful song!
@@keithjones6023 how?
This might blow some minds but their first two records are by far their best. Basically everything up to Square One on X and Y is fantastic and then it kind of blandly levels off somewhat. Viva La Vida has some nice sonic textures. Tend to prefer albums like that and Everyday Life over pop product like Headful, Mylo and their latest one.
I'm glad to see you guys cover underground bands! Never heard of this Coldplay guy but his music is very interesting. It's really cool how well they mastered their sound, that sound being the music they play at the end of an especially emotional episode of Grey's Anatomy. You should check out their contemporaries like Muse or Maroon 5, great talents all of them.
The funniest thing about this comment is that you mention Muse and Maroon 5 in one breath.
I love Muse. I think I might hate you, though. It’s a funny comment. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Let me be clear: I spent the ages 13-17 listening to Muse like it was my religion. Their new stuff though...
@@JoshuaAccount the line “their new stuff though….” Could apply to so many bands I have loved…..
@@mrp4242 As a young man (late '80s/early '90s) I used to hang out a lot with a couple of guys I met at work who were also into music (bassist & drummer in a band). When they asked me what I thought of various bands, I so often answered with "well I like the early stuff" that it practically became my catchphrase.
I was into Coldplay quite a bit around the first two albums and everyone I knew with a thing for alternative music praised them at the time. However, by the time X&Y appeared it became obvious to me that they started to capitalize excessively on what sold A Rush Of Blood To The Head. I was quite underwhelmed by the singles Speed Of Sound and Talk which both sounded like copies of Clocks and they killed my interest in the album.
As being mentioned it was quite clear they were aiming to become the biggest band in a non-subtle way.
Viva La Vida got me back on track at the time(I liked Violet Hill and the title track), but it couldn’t hold my interest for long and everything else I’ve heard ever since sounds exactly the same.
Top Three From Coldplay - Parachutes - A Rush Of Blood & Ghost Stories. Favorite Coldplay moment , Chris Martin signaling out Richard Ashcroft as his idol & having Coldplay back Richard on Bittersweet Symphony at Live Aid 2.
Viva la Vida: low-key their best album. No way it belongs at #6
It's at #2 for Jason.
It's "low key" not. It's pretty overblown. Their first two are the best.

Quite enjoyed the walk down memory lane of this video! I LOVED Coldplay for the first 2 albums... My fall off was IMMEDIATELY with XXY. Tried to like it... but didn't (though I DID and DO like Fix You). Didn't like the singles from Vida so didn't immediately listen to it but DID go through all their albums on Spotify after Mylo came out and did find myself pleasantly surprised by Vida. Just going back, HARD AGREE on the first two albums being brilliant. They were definitely one of my fave bands for that time period, and am happy I got to see them twice, once touring behind Parachutes and once touring Rush of Blood. The improvement between the two was MASSIVE as a live band, with that set they played at a festival at the Gorge being one of my fave live sets ever. I think one place I differ is that I do like most of their singles, and find some amused enjoyment in all their pop experiments trying to find the way to exist in a hip hop EDM world (unfortunately, instead of being a rock band, sigh). That said, I've never listened to anything past Mylo so... 5. Mylo 4. XXY 3. Vida 2. Parachutes 1. Rush of Blood to the Head.
Oh no, a rock group made pop music, what a sin!!!!
I used to like Coldplay. Even when I was into them, I didn’t think they were up to the level of some of their influences like late Police or late 80’s U2.
Top three
1) Viva la Vida (love the Eno touches and hidden tracks)
2) A Rush…
3) X & Y (“A Message” is their deep cut masterpiece…very U2 sounding but just a great little song)
I totally agree about "A Message." Without that song X&Y might not have gotten to 4 stars for me.
My favourite song from X and Y is A Message too, but it's only one of some great songs on the album.

In my mind, everything creatively they had to offer was in the first two albums, then fizzle central. Became the one man front man show (are there even other members?) and beyond pretentious. Coloratura carries that album. If it wasnt for that song i would put them at second last place.
Here's what's become my M.O. when plowing through a Discography like Coldplay's: I listen to every album straight through once or twice and then listen to each song individually and repeatedly (could be twice, could be six times) until I've decided how I feel about it, then I rate it (1-5 stars) and maybe take a few notes. When I've done all the songs I average them out and that gives me a starting point for the album rating. There are many other factors that go into my rating though and sometimes the rating is quite different from the average.
Exactly the same for me. I rate each song individually and then average them out. It's amazing how different my overall perception is once that is done vs just giving the album a single rating.
I have developed the habit of listening to the albums release order first and scoring and making notes of outstanding songs on first listen. I then decide rating of album..by amount of song ratings and feel of albums in comparison to eachother. I double check with quick scan after all that and solidify scores....tweak if I feel I've been unfair a bit when comparing. Did that with Parachutes. Original rating was 6....then up to 6.5 and on last day it became 7 when I thought the other albums on same score were not quite as well grounded. All my ratings are a min of two goes. And however I first rated the album if I want to actively listen to it again for pleasure it gets no less than a 7.5 score. Any album I score 8+ I buy the cd. 7.5s I listen bit more then maybe buy.
That's more or less my method as well. I try to listen to every song on every album at least 6 times. Some songs I will listen to more than 6 times- until I feel like I "get it" (or just decide the song isn't that good.) But this method breaks down with large discographies. When there are 15-20 albums (or more) to digest there's just not enough time to listen to every song a minimum of 6 times.
@@threestringsomg Yes, I always listen to the discography in order.
Viva La Vida ended their classic era. Everything since has been relatively limp, and VLV wasn’t even their best at the time.

Hate, hate, hate Coldplay! (But my deepest darkest secret is that I love Speed of Sound) 🐧
I should’ve added something: for all those who haven’t heard it - it’s somewhat obscure - I strongly recommend checking-out a 1999 recording: Bigger Stronger. It was featured on their debut Parlophone release; an EP titled ‘The Blue Room’ Its a bit of a Radiohead knock-off, but it’s so, so good. It’ll make anyone miss the early, vital, Coldplay.

I wouldn't say those first are VERY good, but they ARE good. Those are the only ones I own. The next two are...okay, yeah, and that's it. After that...I just don't care anymore.
Adore your channel guys. My opinions are pretty much in line with yours - their first two albums are classics, X&Y foretold the end and they had one last good-to-great album in them with Viva la Vida before the slide.
That said, I'd love to see your takes on how to re-sequence X&Y. Here's my stab at it - still not up to the level of "rush of blood", but I think cutting the record to just over 40 minutes and rejiggering the tracklist makes it much more listenable and adds a touch of the dynamics that the original sequence was lacking.

Mylo Xyloto is one of the most underrated albums of all time it’s a serious Trojan horse album. most people can’t see past the sugary production which felt particularly jarring after viva la vida. BUT it has a surprising amount of depth and a lot of interesting sonic ideas. Most importantly, the entire band gets a chance to flourish along side electronic productions. It has a lot of heart and is nothing like head full of dreams.
I've never been a huge fan of Coldplay but I can't say I've ever disliked them totally. Weirdly the only album by them I ever bought was X&Y because I really loved "Speed of Sound" when it came out. Before that I never bought their first two because the big singles from those albums ("Yellow", "Clocks" especially) were so overplayed it made me rebel against listening to them. Which I do think I missed out. I have heard many of the album cuts from those albums over the years in addition to some of the other singles and really liked them so I think I need to give those two albums another chance. I'd say the past ten years or so I have completely ignored them other than the period a couple years ago where my daughter was absolutely obsessed with "Viva La Vida" and a few of their other 2010s hits. I didn't even realize they released an album in 2019 until last week.
Entertaining video though. I really enjoyed all of your reviews on this one, had to laugh a lot especially at the bad ones in the bottom half but also enjoyed hearing the good ones too.

Reading through many comments on their TH-cam videos, it seems that my relationship with Coldplay mirrors that of so many: enjoyed the first two albums, but little else subsequently. I bought both Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to The Head upon release. I saw them in 2002, on their first run of shows whereby they made the step-up from theatre-sized venues to arenas. They’re now a stadium act, obviously. I recollect enjoying the singles from X&Y, but stopped short at purchasing the album. I’m largely unfamiliar with every subsequent release, except for a mere handful of singles. The snippets of heard from later release sound almost unrecognisable from their 200-02 output. If you were to take Martin’s distinct vocals away, I’d wager many wouldn’t recognise the music as being Coldplay’s. Oh, well. I was more of a Travis fan, anyway!
Actually, an eventual Travis listography would be very welcome! I lost track of them after their third album, but recently listened to a latter-day album for the first time;, Everything At Once. I was pleasantly surprised!
Might be awhile before we get to them, but if you don’t know The Boy With No Name, I’d say that’s easily their best album after the first three. -Jason
I remember reading the review in the NME, I think. By 2002, I was obsessed with The Strokes, Libertines, etc. I’d moved on from Travis. I probably thought they weren’t cool enough! It is an album I should check out, though. Closer is a lovely song. Thanks for responding, Joe. P.S. with Charlie’s sad passing, could the Stones’ listography be on it’s way? 😉

For me they were amazing until Viva La Vida. It's no coincidence that once Chris Martin praised Arcade Fire as the best band and brought in a producer for them (Markus Dravs) to do Viva La Vida that they became overproduced and disposable. Totally down with the general assessment of Coldplay's last ten years consisting of mostly vapid technicolor pop. Never loved the band, but they did hit a sweet spot with their ambitious intent between 2002 and 2008. Rush of Blood, X&Y and Viva la Vida balance nicely between the blandness of the debut and the overindulgent saturation of the later stuff. I can live with those three. I actually don't mind Ghost Stories too much either, for it's change of pace and giving the songs space to breathe. That said, that Sky of Stars song is indeed perhaps the most irredeemable BS they ever sunk to and that's saying a lot for these guys! I would go
1) Viva la Vida
2) Rush of Blood
3) X&Y
4) Ghost Stories
5) Parachutes
6) Xylo
7) Everyday Life
8) Head Full of Dreams

"Yellow" was a song I really hated when it was played on MTV. I don't know exactly why though. I've always tried to have an open mind so even music I don't love is okay to me.. Just something about the video perhaps.
A bit later on I started to like Coldplay a bit. They do have their fair share of good songs but as the years went on and my music taste evolved my interest for Coldplay became slim to none. I didn't even know some of these albums existed to be honest. In that regard they remind me of U2. The more music I discover the less I am inclined to listen to U2. Hearing a hit at a bar or in some movie once in a while is enough for me.
The biggest problem with Coldplay to me though was that many songs beyond the hits just sounded bland to me even on the better albums.
A band I used to hate (I still think "Fix You" is the song that causes me to roll my eyes more than any other) but my opinion of them seems to increase every year. What can I say, when they are good they have a graceful magic. I equally loved the long bashing of them and how you got me pumped up to listen to Rush of Blood to the Head again.
Fix You is totally vomit-inducing. Horrific trash.
@@billclarke3773 I mean it's not good but they have much worse songs.
I am not a big fan of fix you but I don't get the excessive love or hate mentality around it. It is just kind of mid tbh.
God Put a Smile on my Face is a tune I really enjoy.
Does it put a smile on your face!? - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Always. 'God gave you style and gave you grace'....and sorry I didn't list the song name correctly - God Put a Smile upon Your Face. Peace!
its seems so good to see critism of Coldplay now but also bittersweet comparing what they used to be even if the old stuff was just decent
How does no one mention Amsterdam when talking about Rush of Blood?
Some people could say it’s front-loaded (especially when you have all the singles in the first half), however, songs like “Politik”, “Warning Sign”, “A Rush Of Blood To The Head” and “Amsterdam”, which is one of my top 10 Coldplay songs, are all amazing tracks, which are nice to hear once you go past the singles. Also, I do think “A Whisper” is quite underrated.

Foolishly thought a deep dive might’ve altered my opinion of this band ( hated them , even when “ Parachutes” came out and ruled the world and every prick in the office with no musical taste would name drop them ) . It didn’t . And the new one was absolute torture to sit through tbh . My top 2 ranked albums are 3.5 at best . The rest are less than 3 stars with last 3 being 1 to 1.5 . Completely done with them after this safe to say ( official announcement ) Just so offensively bland. I don’t normally leave a summarizing comment with my lists , but felt compelled this time for some reason …I can honestly say I found the Three Dog Night deep dive more interesting. And the Phil Collins review was a blast in comparison ( much respect to Phil 👊🏻)..anyway here goes . Listography rules 👊🏻😎❤️..Chris Martin sucks

4. Ghost Stories
5. X&Y
6. Mylo Xyloto
7. A Head Full of Dreams
8. Everyday Life

Love the first 2 albums, like the next 2 and the only other one I've heard is Mylo Xyloto which is bearable but not much more:
1. A Rush of Blood to the Head
2. Parachutes
3. Viva la Vida
4. X&Y
5. Mylo Xyloto
Regarding "Fix You", I remember it being played on the radio as an track from the album when X&Y came out. The DJ said that he expected it to be the song that would be played on TV when England get knocked out of their next football/soccer tournament.
I suspect that, when Coldplay play live, the 'other 3' particularly relish playing any early songs in the set.
I love Coldplay--that is I love 2000s Coldplay. They have won several Albums of the Year for me and have commonly reached the Top-5. Head Full of Dreams had been my least favorite until this weekend--that new album is a big disappointment to me. I’ll give it time, but yeach……
COLDPLAY:
1. A Rush of Blood to the Head. 5/5 AothY 2002. A supreme album, and would land in my Top-20 albums of all time. Parachutes had gotten me into them, so when this album came out, I was blown away. Radiohead was starting to get pushed out of the way for the new best band around, only to make their comeback in 2007. Warning Sign, Amsterdam, Green Eyes underrated songs to go with gems like The Scientist, Clocks, and the title track.
2. Parachutes 5/5. AotY for 2000. Raw and beautiful. It beat out such solid artists as Radiohead and U2 for my AotY. A great debut. Sparks, High Speed, all great.
3. Viva La Vida , or Death and All His Friends. 5/5 AotY for 2008. Very layered and rich album. Viva La Vida is my least favorite of the songs, but not enough to demote it, because it’s still well produced. If they want to experiment, this was it. 42, Cemeteries of London and Strawberry Swing are all fun. Its kindred Prospekt’s March is also great, with Life in Technicolor II arguably the best music video of the oughts. The last of the great ones, chronologically, Jason hit it on the head for me for this album. Kram missed it.
4. X&Y. 4.5/5. Another complete album. It’s more rocking than aRoBttH, but still so good top to bottom. It was my Runner Up ito AotY n 2005 (just behind ‘Plans’ by DCFC).
5. Ghost Stories, 4/5. It tiook me some time to get used to it, but this is a solid album and includes some of my favorite songs by them. There are a couple that I dont particularly like, such as Ink (and Sky Full of Stars is fine--just don’t think it belongs); this is why its not higher on my list. Still, it was In my top 5 albums for 2014. I had the “Target Deluxe Edition” which is most certainly the way to go with good hidden tracks. I don’t get all the hate from Jason, here.
6. Everyday Life 3.5/5. Top 5 for 2019. This being amongst the “best album”s that year may speak more of what else was out there, than the goodness of this album, and the fact that I didnt listen to a ton of Albums that year-but still a good listen. They toned down the pretentiousness a little, but not enough to raise it up.
7. Mylo Xyloto 3.5/5. Kram is too harsh here. It’s listenable. There are good songs and duds. I don’t hate Paradise. Joe hit it on the head for me.
8. A Head Full of Dreams 2/5. This has grown on me a bit, but still not up to standards for best Coldplay. Kram said it best--full on pretentious.
9. Music of the Spheres 2/5. Not been impressed at all. Hot mess. Will give it time, but everything that I didn’t like about Mylo Xyloto and Head Full of Dream is here, complete with nonsensical featured acts and pretentious lyrics. That ‘Pride’ song made me want to cut my ears off, lyrically is awful. ‘Higher Power’ isn’t awful, but too poppy for me to like it. The first two “emoji instrumentals’ are fine, just not interesting. Beutiful (sp?) is cringe. I do agree with Joe, Kram and Jason that the ending song (Coloroatura) was quite good--the sole reason I dont give it a 1 right now. But one song is not enough to get any love. Like Head Full of Dreams, I will not be buying this one. Sad.
If Prospeckt’s March was considered an album, it would be #5 above. Safety and Blue Room are fun EPs and old school Coldplay fans should be sure to check them out if they haven’t already.
Lol... Screw you Kramzer. I walked down the aisle with my wife to Swallowed in the Sea and it is still my favourite Coldplay song! 🤬🤣
Woah, for realz?
I used to sing this song with guitar to my kids at night. I like it. It’s nursery-rhymy though.
@@179rich Yeah! I will never forget the way the lady in charge of the venue's sound system rolled her eyes when I handed over the CD. I mean, I'd prefer to get married to Supper's Ready by Genesis or How Soon is Now by The Smiths but if I attempted that, I'd probably have to find a different wife. 🤣
@@tokyochuchu You'd need an aisle at least a mile long for Supper's Ready!
Whomever chose that wedding song should have completed the aisle walk solo.
It could be Brian Eno that caused the direction they're turning into, not really Chris Martin.
1.Viva la Vida, using some songs from the EP
2. Rush of blood
3.X n Y
4 Parachutes, they should have included brothers n sisters and bigger n stronger to make the album more versatile
5. Mylo
Listening to all the Coldplay albums. Brutal.
Like the majority of people, I loved Coldplay’s first 2 albums before gradually losing interest in them over their next few releases. I have only listened to A Head Full Of Dreams and Everyday Life once each, and didn’t find anything particularly interesting in either.
However, my main difference of opinion is with Ghost Stories - I genuinely like the moody, atmospheric tone of the album, which I enjoyed a lot more than the dreadful Mylo Xyloto.
I think I like Coldplay more than most.
1. A Rush of Blood to the Head
2. Parachutes
3. Mylo Xyloto
4. X and Y
5. Viva La Vida
Joe complains about Headful of Dreams sounding like other popular pop music at the time, which may be a valid criticism but in my ignorance it's not an issue for me. I don't know who Headful of Dreams sounds like.
Do you ever make up melodies or percussion elements or whatnot in your head that go along with certain songs when you hear them or think about them? My mind plays a separate percussion segment whenever I hear Paradise.

I have their first 4 albums on CD and saw them touring Viva La Vida in High School. I still have the shirt haha. Yeah nothing can touch the first 4 at all. Their overly hackneyed lyrics, holding hands, saccharine nonsense is just wearing too thin. There are moments on Everyday Life that I like, but it just doesnt work at all anymore. That ship has sailed.
Im a massive Coldplay fan and im 30 mins in. Im actually laughing hard with all your hate for them thus far.
I mean im certainly not one for feeling triggered by ppl who hate the music i love. One thing i will say is that albums number 7 and 9 (AHFOD and MOTS) are terrible. Coloratura is a great song but the rest of the album..well..no words.
Coldplay Albums Ranked: (I only like their first four rock albums)
Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008)
Parachutes (2000)
X&Y (2005)
A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
They had a run of four genuinely great albums (Rush of Blood; X&Y; Viva la Vida; Mylo Xyloto). Everything else is patchy but with a few good songs. However, both Everyday Life and Music of the Spheres are very much style over substance (though Champion of the World and Higher Power are pretty good).
When someone said "Hymn for the weekend" I thought, that rings a bell how does that one go again? So i TH-camd it and it's got over 2B views lol GEEZASS! Then I remembered, oh yeah it's the echoey nursery rhyme type thing. Utter dross.
Well the list is easy, first three albums take the top three spots. Done. Seen them live twice, both times they were epic.
Parachutes is a fantastic album, it came out just when I needed it…. That and KID A by Radiohead.
“I do like it more than The King of Limbs by Radiohead.” Famous last words of a fool.
KoL sucks. I don’t remember what it is but it’s true. - Joe
I once heard someone say that if Radiohead is Cheez-Its then Coldplay is Cheese Nips. Someone is a genius. 😏

Sonically, Coldplay is basically a watered down version of U2. Nevertheless, their early sfuff is pretty good. Their first 3 albums are filled with memorable songs (even if not many of them are all-time great songs.) Parachutes and Rush Of Blood are interchangeable to me- either of them could be my #1. The rest of their discography is spotty. Viva La Vida has parts I love but also has parts that leave me cold. Myxo Xyloto has a couple-three tasty moments but not much else. Ghost Stories is kind of boring. A Head Full Of Dreams and Music Of The Spheres are practically unlistenable. I liked Everyday Life when I first heard it during the "Album of the Year" series, but upon revisiting it this week it dropped below 3 stars. Overall, I think Coldplay gets picked on too much- they've made their share of good music. But at the same time, they don't deserve to be the most streamed band in the world. Many other bands are more deserving of that title.
MY RATING SYSTEM:
5.0 = major classic
4.5 = minor classic
4.0 = great
3.5 = very good
3.0 = good
2.5 = fair
2.0 = poor
1.5 = awful
1.0 = historically awful
I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore. Anything I rate 3.5 stars or higher is an album I'm enthusiastic about and would likely revisit at some point.
I'd pretty much agree with your star grades, I'd just flip X&Y and Viva La Vida. I think Viva La Vida's a pretty solid album (even though I hate the title track), and I think X&Y is a little dull with the exception of a handful of tracks.
Since we started at the same place, it looks like the only thing I missed by not going deeper was Mylo Xyloto. Everything else looks skippable.
@@markgatica12 If I'm being honest most of Mylo Xyloto is skippable, too, apart from 2 or 3 tracks. But the rest of that album is at least passable... which can't be said for Head Full Of Dreams or Music Of The Spheres.
@@markgatica12 Agree with Whammy. Mylo Xyloto isn't really essential in any way, it's just less bad than the stuff that came after it.
@@edgustafson Fair enough. I just feel that on X&Y there's still some residual momentum going on from their first two albums... whereas on Viva they start going in all kinds of different directions and not all of them work for me.
Never much cared for them, never much cared for any single off Rush of Blood, can't find anything bad to say about "Paradise." It makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. 🤷♂️ Love the video too.

Interesting for me that X&Y not getting the deserved kudos on here - it's very much my favourite Coldplay album. For me the run of songs from White Shadows through to Speed of Sound is top drawer, and I've still never heard anything more effecting from them than The Hardest Part. Liked the debut but never loved the follow up despite some good tracks. Downhill thereafter, save for the brilliant Violet Hill
It looks like 'Parachutes' is Coldplay's 'The Bends' for me. Everyone seems to love these albums, but I think they are 'just' good.
That's a totally understandable point of view. Many people can't get past 4 stars on any Coldplay album and I can't really blame them.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Haha, but I'm really surprised that no one else sees X&Y as their best album. Maybe I'm just crazy.
@@Sir_Eyeball X&Y is a great album but I do think it's a slight step down from their first two.
@@Sir_Eyeball My problem with X & Y is it's kind of like them ripping off themselves. It doesn't really add anything they hadn't already done on their previous albums. Like "Speed of Sound" is basically "Clocks: The Sequel". This is a great video and you all explain your thoughts very well. For me, I was born in 03. By the time I got old enough to pay attention to and care about music they were already post Mylo Xyloto. So to me they had always been a shitty boring pop band. I hated them for a long time until I took the time to hear their discography so my takes are very different
9. Everyday Life - This reccord is so self important and pretentious. Chris Martin for me is so likable but I can't stand him on this record. He acts like he's the next messiah and I hate it.
8. A Head Full of Dreams - its all so empty and vapid. There is really nothing to it. And thr production is so bad the record sounds awful
7. Music of the Spheres - definitely not a good record, but a fair step up from the last two. Some cool synths and choruses. I think there are good parts like the closer and Humankind. The bad parts are just rather boring
6. A Rush of Blood to The Head - man I've listened to this record so many times and I just don't get it. I love Clocks and In My Place but the rest of this record just bores me to death.
5. X&Y - this is where I start to like the albums. This is a great autumn album. It's very one note but I enjoy most of it
4. Mylo Xyloto - I was shocked the first time I heard this record because I enjoyed it so much. The big colorful moments like Every Teardrop and Paradise are amazing in my opinion, but the slower songs kill the pace
3. Ghost Stories - this is where I really love the albums. A sad Electronica inspired heartbreak album is right up my alley. I love the sad boy vibes. Listening to this album in your bed in the dark when sad is cathartic. Love Midnight in particular. It's so different for Coldplay but the cold lifelessness of this really hits on the sad feeling of heartbreak
2. Viva La Vida - this record is so lush and beautiful. Every song sounds amazing. The production is just amazing. Chris Martin finds the courage to actually be an artist and experiment. The shoegaze section of Yes is proof of that. Cemeteries of London is a masterpiece
1. Parachutes - for a long time this was the only one I liked. It's such a pretty sounding album throughout. The guitar work is so varied and excellent. The record is definitely frontloaded. The first half is perfect. The first 5 songs are in my top 10 Coldplay songs, Don't Panic being my favorite. The second half is still amazing though. What wins me over here is the lyricism. Chris is so Ernest and honest in the emotional lyrics. It's like he put his heart to paper. Many will find it lame but I think it's so sweet and charming and it really connects with me
I had no idea there was so much hate for "Paradise." Someone likes it though. That song blew up BIG TIME. A BILLION AND A HALF views on TH-cam.
