MIC THE SNARE: COLDPLAY DEFENDER will soon be in theaters near you. Starring Dolph Lundgren, the Annoying Orange, and in the role of a lifetime, Gary Oldman as Crazy Frog. Captions should be up in the next few days. Thanks for watching :)
you missed why people were so angry about taylor swift being times person of the year. people hate her bc she's one of the most famous persons alive and yet she does nothing with her platform. you know how last year times POTY was zelensky, bc he was defending his country. isn't it kinda weird how they didn't pick any palestinian person for this year's POTY, which would have made sense, and instead they picked TS for some incomprehensible reason, and she DIDN'T MADE ANY COMMENTS ON IT. fuck her.
Love them or hate them... you have to admit it is kind of impressive how Coldplay has continued to stay relevant through how much music has changed the last 20-25 years.
Have they the last ten though? Their last two album have been pretty underwhelming even for Coldplay standards, to the point that I can't even remember their names
@@symetry96They were still making waves in 2015-2017 with A head full of dreams album. Funny how ppl pretend to forget their big worldwide hits during this period: Hymn for the weekend, Adventure of a lifetime, Something just like this. They just went Pop. That's all.
I actually worked as a security guard in one of their concerts, I was right behind the stage they were performing. I can confirm that 1. their fans are much more vocal in-person than they are online and 2. it's for good reason; their live show is absolutely worth going to, it is a whole lot of fun.
Saw them during the VLV tour and it’s still one the best shows I’ve ever seen. They had a stage set up in the lawn section and went out and played a couple songs for all the lawn people so my friend who couldn’t afford floor seats still got to see them up close.
@@HotStrange I wrote it as a separate comment elsewhere, but it's just as true here: I ended up attending one of the shows on their Viva la Vida tour, and they are, hands down, the best band I've seen perform live. Chris Martin really knew how to engage with the crowd, they had a perfect amount of "prop" involvement that made the audience feel unified in our experience, and they set up a couple of mini-stages throughout the venue so that even the worst seats in the house saw a couple of songs performed up close. They seemed unrelentingly happy to be there, even though they had to have been sick of the album by then. Every song was given full effort. (And, every concertgoer was given a CD with a few bonus tracks on the way out -- including one that became a favorite song of mine.)
@@jacksyoutubechannel4045 I think we saw them on the same tour. I got that live CD as well. I lost it in a car accident unfortunately. I also had a bunch of confetti butterflies. They released them during the closer and everyone caught some and took them home. But yeah amazing, amazing live band and they seem like genuinely amazing guys. I was like 17 when I saw them and it’s still one of the best shows I’ve ever been to 14 years later.
One thing I would like to add (because this DDD is almost immaculate) is that Coldplay not only didn't used BTS to have a hit, but they developed a relationship with them that was genuine, even being friends with Jin, one of the BTS guys, and the band cowrote the solo song Jin released before he went to mandatory military service, "The Astronaut", a wholesome and beautiful single, with signature Coldplay sound. We can say anything about them, but this is a band made of apparently good people.
Chris Martin especially seemed like such a good person when interacting with BTS, which i'm a fan of, that it made me finally listen to their earliest albums and i'm so glad i did instead of blindly letting online opinions keep me away from their music
I agree! The two bands seemed to really understand eachother and i believe they are on the same "wavelength" about how they think about music, about connecting with people, etc. I think they formed a genuine connection!
Mic’s barely controlled excitement for being able to bring up his favourite amphibious superstar, and it NOT be for a bit is the best payoff I’ve had on TH-cam this year.
A highlight of my (American) life was walking around one of the Magnificent Seven, listening to "Cemeteries of London" on my iPod, sketching the tangle of headstones and tree roots onto the pages of Moleskin as it started to rain. Perfection.
@@Ilovefent oh really? I always really enjoyed it lol. Is it generally considered bad? Also I haven’t heard their most recent 2 albums so I can’t compare them properly.
Honestly, Viva La Vida was the first album I bought for myself where I actually liked every song. I love them, they’re better than people think, for sure.
I always appreciated that Coldplay split their royalties equally amongst the band members. Chris doesn’t get more for writing the songs. It seems from this video they worked out any issues at the start of their career and it’s been pretty smooth for them since.
That's not completely right. He said in an interview that they split it in 40-20-20-20, and Chris gets 40% for both writing all the songs and taking all the publicity. In my opinion this is fair, but it's not equal.
They did split it equally originally, following the lines of U2 who do the same. But the rest of the band became aware that Martin was doing most of the work, so now they give him a bit more. Another comment suggets 40%, which could well be right.
Death and All His Friends is their best closer and one of their best songs in general. The statement in that refrain is also some of their best lyrical work: “No, I don’t want a battle from beginning to end, I don’t want a cycle of recycled revenge. I don’t wanna follow death and all of his friends.” A fantastic statement in an album with loose themes of revolution and how that looks in the world.
Mr. Snare, I beg of you - *please* do a DDD on The Bee Gees! There’s so much to unpack and discover with their discography, ranging from their first few baroque pop albums to “rock opera” to the disco years and beyond, it’s quite a ride. They’re a highly under appreciated and undervalued band because I think most people just think of them as the cheesy falsetto disco guys, but when you give their first few albums a spin, and when you really listen to the complex arrangements in the disco stuff, it’s really mind blowing. They were so good. They deserve the full Deep Discog Dive treatment! 😊
@@spritenoicy1676 Ugh SUCH a great album. Their first like 5-6 albums are all so masterful (though Odessa can be a lil’ mixed at times). More people need to be exposed to The Bee Gees!
100% on board with this proposal. The gradual pivot from being Australia's answer to The Kinks' pop era (complimentary) to being the biggest disco act on the planet is such a wild trajectory that even if they weren't excellent I'd still love to see them covered.
I'm amused by the fact that when Coldplay asked Kraftwerk for permission to sample Computer Love, the reply was supposedly just a piece of paper with "Yes" written on it.
I genuinely dont know why people hate Coldplay. Like i seriously dont know ,,, what exactly is so bad about them !?!? It seems that people just hate things they dont understand, or go straight to hating instead of accepting and thinking
Coldplay was the first band I obsessed over. The first band I listened to every b-side, ep and demo. While many bands are near and dear to me, Coldplay will still always carry that unpresendented excitement of discovering a band for the first time
Exact same for me. I see my relationships with artists like romantic relationships. Coldplay is my musical soul mate. I just love them deeply and will never stop listening
MX is one of my fave albums ever despite its flaws. It captures 2010s euphoria so perfectly. Charlie Brown is one of the best songs ever made and I will literally fight anyone who disagrees
My first concert ever was the MX tour. I was in 8th grade when it happened. That album was such a landmark time in my life and holds a special place in my heart. I never understood why it was so hated at the time it came out because it was my favorite album for about 2 years after its release and I think it still holds up.
I’m proud to join you as Coldplay defender. They’re my all time favorite band and X&Y is my all time favorite album. I feel like there’s something in my mind that makes it impossible for me to dislike anything they put out. Even the songs from them that I consider weaker I don’t even remotely dislike personally
It’s a good album for sure, but there are defo some skips on it for me. Hard to see an argument for all time best album. Of course it’s all a matter of opinion (especially when the word ‘favourite’ is knocking about) but, just out of interest, what other albums are top 10ish for you?
@@isaacsmith6913 I completely get the arguments against X&Y tbf, it’s all personal connection for me though as it along with the other 2000s albums from Coldplay have been an integral part of my life since I was very young There’s a lot of albums I’d consider all time favorites. I’d actually place all of Coldplay’s 2000s albums up there as previously mentioned. Others off the top of my head would be Blur - S/T & 13 BT - This Binary Universe & These Hopeful Machines Radiohead - In Rainbows RHCP - Californication & By The Way Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol 2 Muse - Black Holes & Revelations Orbital - In Sides Daft Punk - Random Access Memories Pink Floyd - DSOTM, Wish You Were Here & Animals There’s several others. These are just the ones off the top of my head rn
@@Jacob004dude are u me omg, blur's 13 is like top 5 albums ever to me as well!! good taste!! i listened to X&Y last night for the first time in several years and it actively pissed me off (in a good way lol) because of how genuinely fantastic it was too
the bts feature on my universe actually makes a ton of sense for both bands. it's one of their most genuine collabs, which is obvious from the behind the scenes content we got from the recording of the song (which chris travelled all the way to south korea for) and from the friendship the bands have formed since. they way they talk about each other and inspire each other in different ways is honestly quite moving. it even resulted in chris making a song for bts' jin's last song before enlisting in the army. idk, all of it makes me love my universe even more
That little snippet of "Midnight" absolute hooked me, I'd never heard of that song before watching this, and now I've got it on repeat. The chilly, mystical atmosphere just sweeps me away. Thanks for the rec!
It’s one of my favorite songs of all time, and I was hoping someone would say that it hooked them here as much as it did to me the first time I heard it :)
In high-school I actually hated it. It was my first time getting into coldplay and I was listening to all their music at once. After some time passed, I gave it another shot and now imo it's one of their best songs ever. I wish more people knew about it
So…as a Coldplay Apologist…Life In Technicolor II has me strung up on the tracks with a train fast approaching. By that I mean it’s far and away my favorite song of theirs and i can’t tell you why it just hits me like a freight train
NO WAY You call out Arabesque for how good it is, for me unironically it might be my favourite Coldplay song in the entire discography, but you just forgot that Stromae is on there? Pretty sure this was Stromaes first musical apearance after Racine Carrée and it works so good
Coldplay is one of those types of bands who make newer music that still sound almost just as appealing as their older songs released during their supposed “prime” era [a.k.a. only the first few years of their existence]. Compared to other bands that went more drastically pop or electronic in their later years, Coldplay’s sound is still very recognizable and distinct. On top of that, I hardly expected their sound to blend so well when they collaborated with artists such as Jay-Z, Rihanna, Beyoncé, The Chainsmokers, and BTS.
Ghost Stories was a big big deal for me when I was 10, I remember it being one of the first CD's i bought, and i think its minimal and cold sounding electronic production really struck with me then and still now. Also (if u didnt know), Midnight was actually built around a sample of the track "Amphora" by Jon Hopkins, its cool to see that they've continued to have a collaborative friendship, I really really hope they work in the studio again soon...
Coldplay was one of the best concerts I've attended (the Head Full Of Dreams video). They always come to LatAm, and we love them for it. Also, as a fan of BTS, Coldplay's genuine love, respect, and friendship is heartwarming.
Its crazy that that tent the festival line up at 2:15 includes Muse AND Coldplay only 2 months before Muse would release Showbiz and 3 months before Coldplay would release the Blue Room EP. Edit: And no way! Coldplay played the Bizarre Festival seen at 6:00! Muse ALSO played that same festival. It's really crazy how much they were vaguely intertwined. Matt even shouted out the band at the end of one of their shows, though I forgot which festival it was.
@luke5100 I like to think of them as a trilogy. Radiohead laid the foundation for all of them, Coldplay took a more pop-oriented route, and Muse took a more hard/punk rock route
love them or hate them, you absolutely cannot deny how big Coldplay have become, they are legitimately one of the biggest bands in the world and I personally the reason for it all comes down to the songs. Their songs may be lyrically average and may not be classify them as a "rock" band but I don't think that matters when the songs are beautiful, wonderful, emotive and universally appealing, anyone can form an easy attachment to them and feel something when listening to them, as someone who went to the Music of the Spheres Tour, I can confirm that experiencing these songs live is a hugely cathartic and joyful out-of-body experience that was like nothing I had ever experienced before I genuinely think Coldplay are gonna go down in history as one of the all time greats
Coldplay was one of the first bands I ever got into. I remember downloading Rush of Blood onto my brand new iPhone 4 back in 2010 or so. The Scientist captured my attention because someone in the Portal (game) fandom brought it up as a song that had Caroline/Cave Johnson vibes. They’ll always have a place in my heart.
i am still so sad that everyday life album got so little attention. It`s so row and sincere, and i really enjoy listening to it as a one piece, a story. arabesque is a masterpiece and one of the greatest songs of them imo, showing that they still searching and developing as a musicians (and also just add stromae in anything and im a fan). Thanks for the great video!
"Everyday Life" is so underrated. My only complaint was that most of the songs were too short. It's like a verse, a chorus, a bridge, another chorus and song is over.
Top 3 Coldplay album for me alongside Rush of Blood and Viva la Vida. I'll take a messy epic with important themes over a safe pop touring album any day
Fun Fact: Chris Martin and I have the same birthday but i didn't figure that out until years after I became a giant fan of their music. Feels like the kind of cosmic connection Chris loves referencing. Awesome video!
Mr. The Snare, I will forever thank you for this video and for introducing me to "Arabesque": some of my favorite ideas and sounds in the whole of music in one track, especially the live recording of it with that last minute you mentioned. The horns blasting in unison and splitting into harmony, the ascending notes, Chris' voice struggling to cut through the noise; everything about that track is a direct line to my ears.
I'm not huge on "A Sky Full of Stars": I don't think the payoff is explosive enough, as if an EDM track is being hemmed in by being a song by Coldplay. But I think it fits on GHOST STORIES fine: in fact, I think it's a terrific idea, a song near the end of an album about a breakup in which the singer basically says, with all the love and affection he's got, I love you, and I sincerely hope that you find *everything* that you're looking for.
It does make sense in terms of story-telling, but musically, it's an outcast with too much contrast. I feel getting jumped at everytime ASFOS comes on after chilling for the whole album albeit the amazing & smooth transition 😂
@@manuwhite18 almost every track in ghost stories can be pinned to a stage of grief, to me at least always in my head is more of an introduction to the grief, magic is denial, ink anger (mainly at oneself), true love is bargaining, midnight & another's arms * oceans are depression, and a sky full of stars & O are acceptance. This is why I think A sky full of stars works, you have all these emotions built up especially at the end of oceans and then it all comes out, unlike earlier in the album, these emotions come out in a healthy way, Chris more looking back at the positive aspects instead of mourning the loss. I think A Sky Full of Stars is better in the context of the album due to the sadness of earlier. The album then goes much softer and concludes with O where the loss is fully accepted and Chris can fully recover from his loss.
One of the most interesting stories I have related to Coldplay music is that my mother was playing piano for a wedding and she has played many weddings in her life time. But this one wedding the bride wanted to walk down the aisle to a piano rendition of Yellow. She said it was one of the oddest choices she’s been given to play before.
Coldplay IS underrated. As a guitar player whose really into rock music and that community, thats where they get the most hate, which is crazy. One specific thing which perfectly shows that is their lead guitarist (i forgot his name), he might not play a lot of complicated stuff, but he always plays EXACTLY what the song needs, and his writing is so creative and catchy. Parachute is a masterpiece
FFS. You can't call a band with 100 million album sales underrated: it's nonsensical. There are people who hate them, because they don't like their genre/songwriting/(lack of) personality. That doesn't make them underrated. A band that big, their guitarist will be as highly rated as The Edge in a decade or two, regardless of whether he's any good or not, he will inspire kids to pick up a guitar, he will be adored. Underrated would be a band not selling records, not filling stadiums and producing incredible music. You don't get to call a band underrated because you like them and other people think they're shit.
@@Leonardo-cs9ij yeah. As a fan of the band you're going to think that. The general consensus (among people who dislike Coldplay) is that they are bland: about as edgy as an orange and as much personality as a single plimsoll.
@@FragileCreatures I disagree on the personality part, their music has plenty of personality but agree on the edginess part because that’s actually why Coldplay fans like the music; it’s not all about negativity or edginess their music is generally about positivity and the realness of human emotion. They don’t want to be edgy. But I disagree on the personality part there’s plenty of personality in their music
They have no desire to be edgy and talk explicit about drinking and drugs and sex and violence and any other edgy topic, just not who they are and I appreciate it. Their music is very expressive and emotional.
As a huge Coldplay fan I can't help but think of the amount of information you likely came across but had to cut due to runtime. And still, I learned a few things I didn't previously know, like the sample in Princess of China. Great video
I'm not as big into the rest of their discography, though they have some undeniably iconic tunes. But Viva La Vida is one of the best pop rock albums ever, and a high water mark for pop music in the 21st century.
I do think Will Champion is worth knowing. Not that Guy and Jonny aren't talented, but I think Will is a secret weapon. He's the classic Viva Chant on Viva La Vida, as well as 99% of backing vocals for the guys. Plus he's always deep in the pocket and his drumming has only become more pronounced recently
while i count myself among the coldplay skeptics, i cannot deny there is a soft spot in my heart for "viva la vida" and "clocks." real zoomer nostalgia spots for me
I love parachutes but Yellow will forever be the song that inspired the music video for Tegan and Sara’s Yellow in my mind and that is a wonderful legacy that song rocks
Coldplay was my comfort band in my teenage years. Full stop. Did I fully understand the absolute gravity of what Chris was crooning about half the time? No! Did this plant the seeds for my own crippling existential dread? Probably! I am so grateful to them. And to you for covering this. I am laughing along and singing along in equal measure as I wind my way through this beautiful retrospective. Those first five albums will always, *ALWAYS* mean the world to me.
Always end up qualifying my love for Coldplay by telling people I love them unironically (they were my number one artist this year). I am so excited for this video
Just went to their sixth show in Singapore National Stadium last night, 31st January 2024. An unforgettable night for sure. Everything was perfect! One of the best I've ever been to!❤
The whole stadium jumped while they played Yellow, Sky Full of Stars, My Universe,. Every song even the lesser-known ones were played with passion and heart. They chose Fix You as the closing song and everyone in the Stadium was singing their hearts out. It's such a privilege to have been there! 😊
I remember my dad used to play Parachutes all the time in the car when I was little. I listened to all their albums, and I gotta say Ghost Stories or Mylo Xyloto are my favorite. Everyday Life is also really unique and creative.
Coloratura is my pick for their best song, despite the album being among their weakest. I remember not caring at all about everyday life as I never enjoyed orphans, and mostly listened to coldplay's big singles for nostalgia at this point. Then I heard higher power and kinda liked it (it grew on me a good bit over time), then I remember seeing coloratura being released, and kept forgetting to listen to it. Then when my universe released and went number 1 i listened out of curiosity and liked it, then that same day listened to coloratura, and it floored me. Mainly cuz i never knew coldplay had a song of that musical scope in them, once broken down into all its segments, transitions, and other smaller details, it truly is a masterpiece, and my prediction is that it will only grow on coldplay fans over the years, and will go down as one of their finest moments.
I was not expecting a Coldplay discog dive but I'm happy to see it! Fellow Coldplay defender as well, you can find lots of us here in Buenos Aires, we literally sold out 10 whole shows of them on their tour. Mylo Xyloto holds a special place in my heart as I listened to it all the time on car rides with my dad 🤧 Our favourite track was Charlie Brown, YOU GET IT !!!
I don’t really listen to Coldplay that much anymore, but Mylo Xyloto is unironically one of those albums that changed my life. It was the first of their albums that I really listened to. I listened to it so much in middle school, that I‘ve just internalised every note of this album. I also got to see them live about 6 years ago and they‘re incredible live! ✨
As somebody who associates woth Indie Rock and Punk, im glad we might be getting to a point where we can admit that Coldplay has an incredibly impressive discography. Also something worth of note is how much "Up in Flames" really foreshadows the sound of Ghost Stories.
First Radiohead a few years ago, now Coldplay. Mid 90s-early 2000s British alt rock is always a fascinating topic. Wonder who's next (quite interested in a Muse DDD btw).
i've never heard of someone matching my coldplay opinions like this. i am so pleased. usually i put longer videos like this on in the background like a podcast, but i was so entertained i sat and watched like a movie!!! great stuff!
I really wish I could see them live again. That Music of the Spheres show was fantastic. March 2022 was an eternity ago. "High Power" is one of my favorite lead singles by them. Very simple and effective. And I always thought "My Universe" was a good example of "let's not overthink this and have some fun" and you can tell that by the lyrics. "Warning Sign" is an underrated favorite from 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' and I wish more people knew about it! 'Viva La Vida' was one the first albums I ever bought and I didn't appreciate it a lot at the time (too alternative for 16 year old, I guess), but throughout the years I keep coming back to it and loving a new song each time ("Yes" is so so good.). I was never aware there was any derision towards Coldplay. To me, they were one of the many bands playing TV, but I guess there's always this weird expectation that Coldplay is somehow gonna release a groundbreaking experimental rock record that's gonna blow everyone's mind. However, Chris's voice anything but experimental, it is made for pop. His lower register is very interesting and has some swagger, but he literally had to alter it for "Midnight" to show us something we hadn't heard before. In the end, the sooner one accepts that Coldplay is just another band, marching to the beat of their own drum, the easier it is to enjoy them. I very much agree with your stance that these days, there's very little music that I hate. I either like it, love it or ignore/forget it.
I am a firm coldplay defender, especially ghost stories. A fantastic album that gets significantly more hate than I think it deserves. Maybe I'm blinded by nostalgia as a youth listening to it, but I honestly think they make good music at a fairly high percentage of releases.
Viva La Vida one of of the albums I listened to religiously as a kid, I still return to it every year and it’s still great every time. I’ve never heard any other Coldplay album because it might spoil what I have with viva la vida lol
I saw them at a festival after seeing my bands. It was the summer MJ died and they did an acoustic Billie Jean cover. The talent on display was world class, they deserve their props.
@@dxitydevilOkay, he didn’t actually produce the song, but he’s credited as providing “extra magic” in the liner notes (he basically provided a big bass sample). That being said, he did work on another song during the Ghost Stories sessions (which many has speculated to have been the unreleased track “The Race”) that he said was cut from the final album for being “too up-tempo” (and yet A Sky Full of Stars made it onto the final album). He did later say in the lead-up to the release of Music of the Spheres that Chris reached out to him about working on material for the album, but didn’t realized that Madeon had moved from France to LA since the Ghost Stories sessions, and since this was during the pandemic when there were still travel restrictions in place, they couldn’t work something out (somewhat related was that Chris said in an interview during the press tour for MOTS that he had a dream where they finished “The Race” and that inspired him to want to eventually finish the song).
@@MysteryMii THANK YOU FOR THE COLDPLAY LORE I APPRECIATE IT THATS SO COOL ,, altho I think one upbeat song was good enough on the gs album So good to know !
Fiiiiinally someone defends them they are honestly one the best bands of the 21st century imo people just don't quite realise it.They are so good and it just became a meme to hate on them without even listening to them.
I didn’t even know Coldplay was a meme to begin with; on the upside, compared to a band such as Maroon 5, I respect Coldplay creatively, professionally and thank Christ they have a frontman who isn’t shitty~ Hot take but they really are The Beatles of the 21st century
When it comes to a sky full of stars, I feel like you have to listen to it from the transition of oceans.. I LOVE that transition and feel like it gives the buildup it is meant to be perceived as (I do love the song on its own as well, though it took me a couple years to really understand it)
A fun fact about Live In Buenos Aires from an argentinian! Coldplay was super super well received for playing their cover of ''De Musica Ligera'' by Soda Stereo, an hymn for Latin American rock. For reference, singing ''De Musica Ligera'' in a Latin American stadium, specially Argentinian, will give you a similar effect to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen --- for spanish-speaking rock and rock in general, I'd say, Soda Stereo's impact is THAT massive. Coldplay's gesture was rewarded with a roaring crowd and, funnily enough, imitated by foreign artists coming to the country to the point it's now considered a bit of a cheap move. But they were surely pioneers in that and their recognition to local idols was much appreciated!
From the bottom of my heart: thank you for this. The tendency to avoid listening to or saying I like bands based on people hating on them/viewing them as cringe or annoying is one I've been trying to dismantle, but it really made me ashamed of what Coldplay stuff I enjoyed growing up. I had no idea they've made (and are still making) so much admirable music and impact. So thank you! I'm looking forward to revisiting and learning more about their discography!
The one album I’d recommend to Coldplay haters is Viva La Vida. It’s definitely their most cohesive record and strikes a good balance between their original alt rock sound and the pop stuff they did after. Violet Hill is the hardest rock song they ever made and it’s goes super hard.
a lot of people forget about this (probably because of the way the band decided to go on their latest work) but Coldplay, at some point in time, was genuinely one of the best and most different bands out there.
Viva La Vida is an incredible album. It came out when i was 15. The gorgeous soundscape provided on the opening track, then brought back again with the hidden closer track, is just sublime. It brings me to tears. I cannot stress just how beautiful it is. This album timestamps a huge period in my life and its just burned into my soul.
I was introduced to Coldplay soon after they released the 2nd album, I'm still keeping up with their music and journey. I agree with you folks ought to listen to "Coloratura" I think it's one of Coldplay's better songs. Thanks for sharing the Crazy Frog news, that never crossed my radar. My favorite Coldplay moment was when sang during the London Special Olympics.
As a big Coldplay fan I am drawn to them by their sound. The strings and synths and beats and the way their songs are produced. They have a certain sound and Chris has a cool voice. But I agree that their lyrics lack, people call them boring and yes lyrically they are a bit boring. But you should see them live, their concerts are incredible. I went to their show during the Mylo xyloto tour, it was colorful and the energy was amazing. That's another thing I like about Coldplay. Every album and tour they have done starting with Viva La Vida, they paint their instruments and wear clothes on stage that represent what the album is about and their stage is designed as the tour theme. They truly put the art into their music, and their shows are more like a musical with color and magic.
DUDE! I literally grew up with Coldplay. Was born the same year parachutes came out. I feel like I've grown up with them. PS: im so happy you liked ghost stories i felt like the only one who liked it. Though i do disagree with your thoughts on a sky full of stars. Here me out. So i did not like the song on its own, however i actually liked it more on the album with it being the second to last song. The album is cold and sad as chris clearly mourns his "conscious uncoupling" and then you have this one giant explosion of supposed happiness where he appreciates the happiness she has given him, and then he goes back to melancholia. Idk if thats a bad interpretation but thats how i saw it. the album builds like a slow burner to this big rave track. I dont rly like it on its own but i like it more in the album. Quite the opposite take, but i respect your opinion and i loved this video. Your deep discog dives always make me happy man. Merry Christmas and a happy new year! (Btw i hate christmas, but youre such a positive influence on me that i am wishing you nerry christmas)
As a 2001 baby of course I really liked Coldplay, fix you was one of my favourite songs ever and those first four albums are chefs kiss. So going on the internet as a teen I was shocked to see extreme hatred for them. I remember my mom disliking them purely because she thought the uncoupling shit was stupid (I mean she wasn’t wrong but that’s a dumb excuse to dislike a band but I digress lol) great vid mic
Mylo Xyloto is one of my favorite albums of all time. Whether that is nostalgia, bad taste or just preference talking, for me it's a 10/10, no question.
Ghost Stories will always be my favorite, HUGE infuence on the music I listen to afterwards. The productions on this album set me on my journey towards EDM and then onto Hyperpop, because of the guitar riffs, synths, vocal treatment and jarring crying guitar solo on True Love. My electric guitar is also named "Ink" in honour of this album.
My first concert ever was Coldplay. My dad took me to see them during the Mylo Xyloto tour when I was in 8th grade. They’ve always had a special place in my heart despite a few missteps in their career. They are definitely a comfort band for me despite me sometimes jumping on the bandwagon and making fun of them, but their talent and impact can never be overstated. Also Christmas Lights is an absolute banger. I wish it was a more popular holiday/Christmas song.
god this reminds me of when I had just become a bts fan and their collab was announced and the 3 coldplay stan accounts on twitter with 12 followers each were explaining to this massive fandom with thousands of people the concept of the spheres and everything about coldplay themselves, good times
Cannot describe how elated I am to see this video recommended to me. Honestly the majority of their albums are great with their first five albums (especially Viva and AROBTTH) being such important and special albums to me, Everyday Life was an underrated gem too. As a big Coldplay defender I adore this. Their EPs are fantastic too, very underrated.
Oldplayers can say whatever they want. Pop-rock there, pop here, rock maybe there, but all of the songs and albums can give you something. Something lovable, something meaningful, something new. I was born into more like the pop era (tho, I share the same birthday with X&Y; 6.6.'05), grew up in the pop era, but still love the first albums. So I recommend to every Oldplayers (aka you, if you only like the first 4-5 album), to listen to the other albums more deeply too. You're gonna find some awesome pieces. I'm also so happy I've attended MOTS concerts already and will be attending more. Awesome experience to hear (if you're lucky) Politik, Swallowed In The Sea with Charlie Brown. A Coldplay concert really is a must to everyone!
Just a small note about Fix You: ive always interpreted the lyrics "i will try to fix you" more as trying to put them back together and help them through whatever it is they're going through as opposed to the stereotypical "i can fix them" kinda thing
b4 i even start... this is the perfect time of the year 2 drop a coldplay DDD. i've always thought of their music as wintry (well, their pre-2015ish output). so my halls r already decked. let's go
Thanks for a final DDD for 2023 Mr. Snare. Coldplay is one of those bands where the songs that I like I really like, and most of those songs are from their first 4 major releases. While their newer albums aren’t my favourite they’re not a band I hate. I might only like some of their work, but I understand why they have the place in the overall music landscape that they do.
Having seen their live shows I can attest that their ability to put on a PERFORMANCE and give you every penny's worth is incredible. I've seen some great artists over the years, but sometimes they haven't necessarily had the most impressive shows. Coldplay's style and influences have changed over the years, and I know that's not the best thing for staunch defenders of Parachutes, or oldie Coldplay purists, but in the band's defense, they've remained so relevant to multiple generations. I honestly don't think I want to hear Parachutes or X&Y again. I don't think it would feel as good. And to TOP IT OFF, their live shows play their old hits too. If you go see their show you're guaranteed to have a fantastic time, whether you got in with My Universe, or Viva la Vida, or Yellow. It's really the best case scenario for a big band like this and I'm glad you managed to identify these points.
I became a Coldplay fan when X&Y came out. Sometimes, a song just hits you at the right place and time and you feel like it was written just for you. I checked out Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head and they became (and still are) my favorite band.
Ooh I’m excited for this one! I admittedly stop listening to Coldplay sometime after the song Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall single came out, but I love all their previous albums, especially A Rush of Blood to the Head and Viva La Vida. I’m curious to hear Mic’s opinion on the later stuff I’m less familiar with!
I have been listening to this band since I was a literal toddler, I went to see their live show back in September at Lumen Field, Seattle. I would trade anything to be able to get that feeling back. I know almost every single song by heart, their music helped me through so many horrible times, and still does. I can’t choose a favorite album, but I personally resonate with X&Y A LOT, and some parts of Ghost Stories. I’ll never stop loving this wonderful band.
I got back into Coldplay when their Music of The Spears album dropped and I was hit with these hard-ass 80s beats. I don't care what people say, I love this band.
MIC THE SNARE: COLDPLAY DEFENDER will soon be in theaters near you. Starring Dolph Lundgren, the Annoying Orange, and in the role of a lifetime, Gary Oldman as Crazy Frog.
Captions should be up in the next few days. Thanks for watching :)
you missed why people were so angry about taylor swift being times person of the year. people hate her bc she's one of the most famous persons alive and yet she does nothing with her platform. you know how last year times POTY was zelensky, bc he was defending his country. isn't it kinda weird how they didn't pick any palestinian person for this year's POTY, which would have made sense, and instead they picked TS for some incomprehensible reason, and she DIDN'T MADE ANY COMMENTS ON IT. fuck her.
@Mic The Snare Can u do a DDD on Owl City plz thnx u 😊
COLDPLAY???? COLDPLAY????
This just in: Gary Oldman wins Lifetime Achievement Award for his superb performance as Crazy Frog
i literally said OH SHIT out loud when i saw this on my recommended (that's a good thing)
Love them or hate them... you have to admit it is kind of impressive how Coldplay has continued to stay relevant through how much music has changed the last 20-25 years.
Have they the last ten though? Their last two album have been pretty underwhelming even for Coldplay standards, to the point that I can't even remember their names
You know what band never went bad? They Might Be Giants. And you don’t see a Deep Discog Dive on them.
@@symetry96They were still making waves in 2015-2017 with A head full of dreams album. Funny how ppl pretend to forget their big worldwide hits during this period: Hymn for the weekend, Adventure of a lifetime, Something just like this. They just went Pop. That's all.
Define "relevant"
@@baronessvondengler Their current tour sold nine million tickets, seems pretty relevant to me.
the 90s: Blur vs. Oasis
the 00s: Coldplay vs. Crazy Frog
I actually worked as a security guard in one of their concerts, I was right behind the stage they were performing. I can confirm that 1. their fans are much more vocal in-person than they are online and 2. it's for good reason; their live show is absolutely worth going to, it is a whole lot of fun.
Their recent tour is in the top 5 highest grossing tours of all time. They are definitely still very popular/
i had a similar experience. i worked in the pit during one of their gigs and my god do they know how to put on a show, it was so fun!
@@lovelyy6491I been a Coldplay fan since 2004 and after they released My Universe, I began to listen to Bts. Coldplay made me fall in love with Bts.
@@verdespickles aww i'm so glad, it makes me happy when people connect with BTS ☺️💜
I agree! The two bands seemed to really understand eachother and i believe they are on the same "wavelength" about how they think about music, about connecting with people, etc. I think they formed a genuine connection!
I’ve heard “the astronaut” live acoustic in Tokyo and it’s incredible I hope it stays a part of the show
Mic’s barely controlled excitement for being able to bring up his favourite amphibious superstar, and it NOT be for a bit is the best payoff I’ve had on TH-cam this year.
It really was incredible hahahahahaha
I won't take this Cemeteries of London ERASURE, this is the song that always draws me back into the first Coldplay albums.
That Jonny solo in cementerios of London is pure gold
The Cemeteries in London and Warning Sign erasure hurt my soul.

@@davidguthriemusic Some of their best songs are in 3/4. Coincidence? Probably.
A highlight of my (American) life was walking around one of the Magnificent Seven, listening to "Cemeteries of London" on my iPod, sketching the tangle of headstones and tree roots onto the pages of Moleskin as it started to rain. Perfection.
As an avid Coldplay defender I gasped when I got this notification. Their first 5 albums rule.

PS you are so fun to watch and these videos are so entertaining, I can’t wait to watch more!
yep, same here! it's the album that made me become a coldplay fan.
It's such a beautiful song.
This CD lived in my CD walkman. One of my favourites of all time
It's a perfect album
I always appreciated that Coldplay split their royalties equally amongst the band members. Chris doesn’t get more for writing the songs. It seems from this video they worked out any issues at the start of their career and it’s been pretty smooth for them since.
That's not completely right. He said in an interview that they split it in 40-20-20-20, and Chris gets 40% for both writing all the songs and taking all the publicity. In my opinion this is fair, but it's not equal.
@@raphael5653 im pretty sure he was joking there, everywhere else its reported they get split equally.
If they do split it equally thats extremely respectable on their part
They did split it equally originally, following the lines of U2 who do the same. But the rest of the band became aware that Martin was doing most of the work, so now they give him a bit more. Another comment suggets 40%, which could well be right.
Death and All His Friends is their best closer and one of their best songs in general. The statement in that refrain is also some of their best lyrical work:
“No, I don’t want a battle from beginning to end,
I don’t want a cycle of recycled revenge.
I don’t wanna follow death and all of his friends.”
A fantastic statement in an album with loose themes of revolution and how that looks in the world.
I love the lyrics for Death and All His Friends so much!
My personal favorite!
True!
I’d be so down with this! “Idea” is such a gem
YES!!!!!
@@spritenoicy1676 Ugh SUCH a great album. Their first like 5-6 albums are all so masterful (though Odessa can be a lil’ mixed at times). More people need to be exposed to The Bee Gees!
Also they didn't make as many albums as Prince
100% on board with this proposal. The gradual pivot from being Australia's answer to The Kinks' pop era (complimentary) to being the biggest disco act on the planet is such a wild trajectory that even if they weren't excellent I'd still love to see them covered.
I'm amused by the fact that when Coldplay asked Kraftwerk for permission to sample Computer Love, the reply was supposedly just a piece of paper with "Yes" written on it.

Coldplay is sooo overhated. They have some pretty rad records, hell yeah!
They are more overhated* than Nickelback that’s for sure.

Overhated. Good word right there.
I was the exact same likei listened EP, interviews, LP I even bought VLv MX.
Yesss 💕 how do you feel about moon music 🌙?
I'll always have a soft spot for Coldplay because their debut album was released the day I was born July 10, 2000. Their career is as old as me
Same for me, only with X&Y!!
Best to share birthday with Coldplay albums😌
The first album is pretty awesome (even if they where a Radiohead knockoff 😅)
On one of my birthdays, the 2nd January 2016, the music video for “Birds” came out.
6 days and 6 years before i was born !
I also have a soft spot but because it was my first concert!
MX is one of my fave albums ever despite its flaws. It captures 2010s euphoria so perfectly. Charlie Brown is one of the best songs ever made and I will literally fight anyone who disagrees
Charlie Brown was always one of my favorites on that album, it’s so sweeping and joyous
Charlie Brown is beautiful, strongly agree with your opinion
I saw them in concert this past October and was sooooo happy they performed "Charlie Brown" as part of their very extensive set.
Absolutely agree, I loved that whole album in high school
@@isaacsmith6913 I completely get the arguments against X&Y tbf, it’s all personal connection for me though as it along with the other 2000s albums from Coldplay have been an integral part of my life since I was very young

Blur - S/T & 13
BT - This Binary Universe & These Hopeful Machines
Radiohead - In Rainbows
RHCP - Californication & By The Way
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol 2
Muse - Black Holes & Revelations
Orbital - In Sides
Daft Punk - Random Access Memories
Pink Floyd - DSOTM, Wish You Were Here & Animals

Ghost Stories is like. Literally exactly that for me bye
Not only do I appreciate a Coldplay defense video going deep into the discog, but one that finds good in each album. Bravo!
the bts feature on my universe actually makes a ton of sense for both bands. it's one of their most genuine collabs, which is obvious from the behind the scenes content we got from the recording of the song (which chris travelled all the way to south korea for) and from the friendship the bands have formed since. they way they talk about each other and inspire each other in different ways is honestly quite moving. it even resulted in chris making a song for bts' jin's last song before enlisting in the army. idk, all of it makes me love my universe even more
I was gonna say, I would have liked that behind the scenes mini documentary included here. It's so fun.
That little snippet of "Midnight" absolute hooked me, I'd never heard of that song before watching this, and now I've got it on repeat. The chilly, mystical atmosphere just sweeps me away. Thanks for the rec!
It goes for a slightly different direction, but I'd recommend Giorgio Moroder's remix of it too!

I wished that was on the album instead of the mostly-instrumental edited version that we got.
Seconding this. Life in Technicolor II, but really all of the songs in that "series" are so good to me.
I believe the shoutout is from Muse’s Eurockenees 2000 set before they played Showbiz
@luke5100 I like to think of them as a trilogy. Radiohead laid the foundation for all of them, Coldplay took a more pop-oriented route, and Muse took a more hard/punk rock route
Both Muse and Coldplay headlined Glastonbury in 2016, interestingly enough
love them or hate them, you absolutely cannot deny how big Coldplay have become, they are legitimately one of the biggest bands in the world and I personally the reason for it all comes down to the songs. Their songs may be lyrically average and may not be classify them as a "rock" band but I don't think that matters when the songs are beautiful, wonderful, emotive and universally appealing, anyone can form an easy attachment to them and feel something when listening to them, as someone who went to the Music of the Spheres Tour, I can confirm that experiencing these songs live is a hugely cathartic and joyful out-of-body experience that was like nothing I had ever experienced before
I genuinely think Coldplay are gonna go down in history as one of the all time greats
@@elsongs agree it`s a bit sketchy. it works if listen to it as an LP though. And a lot of great >3min songs as well
Top 3 Coldplay album for me alongside Rush of Blood and Viva la Vida. I'll take a messy epic with important themes over a safe pop touring album any day
@@hunterlogan same. i genially like pop music, but music of spheres was such a disappointment to me (especially on the contrast with everyday life) =(

Deserved DDD, also I'm a huge X&Y defender, those songs will be stuck in my mind forever, they are so dreamy
X&Y and MX are their best albums in my opinion :)
Talk literally shaped my music taste forever. I'll always owe that to them
X&Y the song, is one of my all time favourites. Makes me feel like a dreamy romantic.
Til Kingdom Come is a masterpiece. It may legit be my favorite song that they've done.
Low is incredible
I'm not huge on "A Sky Full of Stars": I don't think the payoff is explosive enough, as if an EDM track is being hemmed in by being a song by Coldplay. But I think it fits on GHOST STORIES fine: in fact, I think it's a terrific idea, a song near the end of an album about a breakup in which the singer basically says, with all the love and affection he's got, I love you, and I sincerely hope that you find *everything* that you're looking for.
i completely disagree@@manuwhite18
@@FragileCreaturesbut they have plenty of personality especially Chris lol
@@Leonardo-cs9ij yeah. As a fan of the band you're going to think that. The general consensus (among people who dislike Coldplay) is that they are bland: about as edgy as an orange and as much personality as a single plimsoll.
@@FragileCreatures I disagree on the personality part, their music has plenty of personality but agree on the edginess part because that’s actually why Coldplay fans like the music; it’s not all about negativity or edginess their music is generally about positivity and the realness of human emotion. They have no desire to be edgy and talk explicit about drinking and drugs and sex and violence and any other edgy topic, just not who they are and I appreciate it. Their music is very expressive and emotional.

@@aclyte2679 also worth knowing: he had a cameo in Game of Thrones, also as a drummer

OMG my favorite underrated youtuber doing a deep discog dive on my favorite group of all time?!?!? Can this day get any better?!?!
"It's like you put Party Rock Anthem on Rumours" MADE MY DAY.
Fantastic video
Coldplay’s first two albums are bonafide classics honestly
Viva also
I have a piano student who is obsessed with Coldplay and he got me HOOKED. I’m so excited to watch!
Coldplay is peak early 2000s ABC television drama. Their music is all over that channel.
I think the lyrics in yellow are cute. They're simple and effective, but not bad
There is no higher praise from Mic than "it earns its length".
One of my top bands of all time! I grew up with Coldplay and their music, and it’s really cool that you’re doing this.
Very happy to see this band on the DDD! Thanks for your work C:
I saw them at a festival after seeing my bands. It was the summer MJ died and they did an acoustic Billie Jean cover. The talent on display was world class, they deserve their props.
Haven’t even watched the video yet and I already love it from the thumbnail. I’m so happy someone else enjoys them; you’re so awesome Mic
You know why Always In My Head is so awesome? It's produced by Madeon! He's such a great producer, both of his albums are fantastic
WAIT WHAT. REALLY !?!?!
@@MysteryMii THANK YOU FOR THE COLDPLAY LORE I APPRECIATE IT
THATS SO COOL ,, altho I think one upbeat song was good enough on the gs album
So good to know !
Fiiiiinally someone defends them they are honestly one the best bands of the 21st century imo people just don't quite realise it.They are so good and it just became a meme to hate on them without even listening to them.
I didn’t even know Coldplay was a meme to begin with; on the upside, compared to a band such as Maroon 5, I respect Coldplay creatively, professionally and thank Christ they have a frontman who isn’t shitty~
Hot take but they really are The Beatles of the 21st century
"That grief doesn't get fixed, it just gets smaller with time." ☹️
Hope you're doing okay.
a lot of people forget about this (probably because of the way the band decided to go on their latest work) but Coldplay, at some point in time, was genuinely one of the best and most different bands out there.
(Btw i hate christmas, but youre such a positive influence on me that i am wishing you nerry christmas)
cant wait :)))
Well I grew up with TMBG and nobody gives a crap about them.
@@user-yr8mu1ce1m cool man
totally agree with your take here.
I agree with you and Mic in the way that I love ASFOS both in context of the album and as single.
Proud 2000's Coldplay defender. It's been rough waters after, but I'll gladly stand up for everything Parachutes to Viva La Vida.
❤
A Rush of Blood to the Head will always be one of my favorite albums. Beautiful melodies and arrangements on every song from start to finish.
Blessed with michael the snichael content 😭
