This. So many go in already aware of the ship and it's just not the same when they know all along, it's part of what's made her reactions to the series my favorite.
@@gamerbear84 Exactly! I got into the show because I heard about Lumity, so watching reactions that aren’t aware is my way of vicariously being surprised by the ship. I said this in a comment on the last video that the reactors who hang on to the grudge against Amity for as long as they can (which is never past 1x15 anyway) are usually great because then they don’t see Lumity coming, and Mosco’s been the best so far! Now of course it seems like the fact that this is a Disney show is the bigger reason she was blindsided but either way this was an amazing reaction!
I also think LGBTQ+ reactors actually tend to be more surprised by this development than straight reactors, because we’ve been queerbaited so many times. A lot of the straight reactors just see the signs for a relationship in a cartoon and that’s that. They aren’t as aware of how recent it is that we started getting representation in kids’ cartoons and how it’s still kind of mindblowing for us to see it.

I had hoped for gay of course (coz REPRESENT) but also the lack of male characters made that seem unlikely? But then I thought; willow coz NO WAY would the main character be involved... GAY DENIAL. I love how Mosco tries so hard not to get her hopes up but then Dana comes in swinging, smacks her in the face with the gay and completely stuns her. It's glorious to behold.
When you think about it, it makes sense why they'd have a child fight Grometheus despite how dangerous it supposedly is. Aside from the valuable life lessons about facing your fears, standing up for yourself, and whatever, the Grom takes the form of your greatest fears, and children's fears tend to be relatively benign things, like rejection, or your parents being disappointed with you, or clowns. Just imagine what someone like Eda or Principal Bump would be afraid of (assuming they didn't just annihilate the thing in like two seconds).
Kinda the same reason Pennywise targets children. Their fears are much more simple

Disney's progressed a lot since Gravity Fall's time. According to Dana (the creator) she had barely any pushback from Disney when adding queer content to the show. But she DID constantly fight with Disney execs about adding more dark content into the show, so that probably played a role in the cancellation of season 3.
Also since that there was a Star vs... or the live Andi Mack show. But they still play for the safest route, and push down when it's not between the most widely accepted lines.
@@Meglivorn They'll push back when it hurts their profits, but for a show made for the western market like TOH it wouldn't hurt their profits more, so they don't really care. These days, Disney isn't really homophibic. They don't really give a shit about queer people, but they don't hate them either. As long as it makes them a profit they'll create it.
Dana did a Q&A after this episode came out and said amity is a lesbian, and that luz is her first crush. Or first major crush. So that’ll probably help you understand amity’s moments with luz in the past more.
Dana also confirmed that Luz did bring the Otter Costume to Grom and wore it.
And she took a picture of herself with the Otter onesie, with a certain someone staring at her with adoration

I still cant believe that this is where it first shown that Luz is forgetting certain events that happened. In this case it eventually reveal that Luz was the one who wrote the letters, which leads to an episode where Amity and Willow have to go into Luz mind to see what causing the problems, eventually leading to the reveal that do to being in the demon realm so long, Luz is slowly turning into a witch, which has some weird side-effects since the transformation is only partially complete. The drama from that is top tier.

Full blown Luzbian behaviour from Amity this episode, Disney would disapprove.
I hate to defend Disney on practically anything but I cannot help but think, "...and yet, the more conservative politicians go on and on about Disney's "long term" Pro-LGBT+ agenda and how Disney must be shut down or at least punished. " The Kingdom of the Rat just cannot catch a break on this issue, so let's enjoy the fact that while Dana and crew had to fight hard for this, it was the Disney execs who ultimately allowed it to air. It certainly would not have been the first time a show got yanked without warning. Still, any troubles Disney gets from this show are well deserved; if you are going to sit on the fence you're only going to get attacked from both sides. Personaly, I am glad it was allowed to air. It is one of the best animated shows ever.

At last, the moment we've all been waiting for! The one that made everyone realize this was a show worth watching. I already know your reaction to the big reveal will be priceless.
Ok time to quell some fears. According to Dana herself, Disney didn't shorten the show because of the LGBT elements. She said her higher ups were rather supportive of her efforts. The real issue was "branding". One, one singular exec, thought the show being serialized (story spanning entire show) instead of episodic (story spanning singular episodes) would make it less profitable, especially since COVID had just begun. The same exec admitted regret when they saw how successful the first episode of the third season was. If i forgot something or got something wrong let me know.
Technically she just said she didn't want to assume that the queer content played a role, but otherwise yeah.
I wonder (hope ((desire)) if this means they will continue the series in another format. I haven't yet seen the last episode, so I don't knot if the ending is definitive, but I'd like it to be.

I completely agree that having representation is important, I grew up in a household where I wasn’t told anything about being gay or even that it existed.
when I liked a girl in my head I played it off as a joke I literally thought, “oh wouldn’t it be funny if these feelings were genuine and not a joke I made up in my head”
I didn’t fully come to terms with being pansexual and not being straight until I was literally mid relationship with a female.

My dad gave me a hamfisted attempt at a talk about acceptance. He's always been a bit weird when it comes to queer men in particular, so he was trying super hard to tell us it's okay if we, my brother and my amab self, liked men, which we told him repeatedly that we didn't. It became really awkward, since it kinda felt like he wasn't listening to us, in an attempt to tell us it's ok for us to be gay.
I appreciate that he tried, but it was just so laser focused on gay men. So when it came to trans people, well he kind of failed, hard, so I haven't had the courage to come out to him. My mom is a whole different mess, but she straight up just doesn't talk about these topics.
He will just say really ignorant and hurtful things and challenging him on things is hard, because he's really stubborn, plus it's not helped by the fact that it feels like he doesn't respect me. He's the kind of guy who will say stuff like, I have known X queer person, therefore my opinion on X, as a very straight guy, is more valid then whatever I say.
Like he's seen my change in wardrobe and general appearance, but I think he picked up my mom's explanation that it's just the fashion where I live, something my mom just decided on, when I started dressing differently. Mind the change is such that I get gendered correctly by strangers, if I wear a covid mask and jacket, to the point of a creep following me off a bus at 10 pm once. Luckily he gave up after I told him I am not interested, a couple times, after he confronted me in the dark alleyway right next to my building.

A way to broach the whole misunderstanding about trans and gay ppl might be just showing him some scientific literature on the whole thing. Trans ppl having different Brains from cis ppl, the result of forcing cis ppl to be trans (whose effects are as dire as forcing a trans person to be cis), trans ppl around the world (like that famous spy, and other genders in cultures), homosexuality around the world and their existence in animals like giraffes and lions), etc.
I think the biggest thing could just be to let him know that understanding isn’t necessary, and that acceptance is the most important thing. Maybe also let him know that ppl can be racist, while being friends w/ PoC. So his opinions on queer ppl aren’t objectively correct just cuz he knew one. It would be like saying all men r r*pists, cuz some men are. Since he’s a man, he might understand that at least, since I’m sure he’d get defensive (stubborn ppl often do).
I hope things gets better for you! A lot of time those comments r due to sheer ignorance. I was able to get through to my mom about not treating me poorly (tho it depends on the day) due to my mental illness since she doesn’t 100% get it. But she’s getting there. Your dad seems willing to be tolerant, so hope isn’t lost yet. Good luck!

Hey I am just glad the dude took no as an answer, eventually, after I made it clear that no matter how interested he was and how he didn't mind if I was trans, that I am not into dudes.
perhaps, but this was when I was at most 15 and deep in repression territory, i was inadvertently gender nonconforming in grade school in a poor conservative urban area in the mid to late 90s, it didn't go well, so that caused me to repress for the next 15 years. Although it was my mom's idea to cut my hair before fifth grade, normal school switch happening between 4th and 5th, essentially you go to what would be high-school at that age.
Also he's almost 70 and doesn't believe in the field of psychology. He's liberal, but born in small town America in the 50s. He's also racist, though mostly against east asians, at least the vocal parts. It's hard calling him on this kind of stuff, mind both my brother and I try, he has a bit more success, because, well, he's a strong minded; loud, but clear; muscular man(kind of like my dad); and I am willowy, my chosen name was picked completely without that context in mind too. My given name is also ironic, it means manly, or of man or something along those lines.
Plus I am not up to coming out to him yet.
You are probably right, it's not that he would be hostile, probably, it's more that he says insensitive stuff now, and not just about trans people. He just doesn't seem to understand why he needs to be considerate of certain things, no matter what you tell him. He's hard to argue with and I get tongue tied easily, especially if I get agitated.
He doesn't conflate the two, he just never even considered the possibility of his kids being trans. He will however talk your ear off about his friend from college, who he is sure is bi, but closeted, the same story, over and over. Especially now that his memory, which has always been funny, is getting worse, he just repeats the same story from a day or two ago, as if you have never heard it before. We are really worried about it, but getting him to a doctor is like bathing a cat.
Oh he's aware of rapists, that was the other talk my brother and I got. We never got a talk about sex itself(that i was there for), just one about it's ok to be gay, as in into dudes, and don't rape, which fair enough. Although a bit odd that the actual sex part never came up, guess he figured sex ed covered that. Also it was kind of in the scare you straight, not like that, kind of way. Suffice to say I was afraid of my dad growing up and while it's gotten better, as in my fear, he can still be intimidating.
Oh don't get me started on my mom and mental illness, I once told her after she kept pressuring me on why I wasn't doing so well in uni, that I was depressed, her first response was to tell me not to be. That about sums up my mom's tact on that subject. She also is skeptical of therapy, though frankly desperately needed it for the last 40-50, maybe 60 years, her mom at least once told her she shouldn't exist and her parents sent her to reverse fat camp, force fed gruel and not allowed to get up, in order to force her weight up, 50/60s Germany sounds wild.

I think it's a testament to the way the show is structured that you can tell what the REALLY important bits are by when they break out the 'top-tier' animation team for specific scenes.

This. There was a bad economic situation, and they decided to cut costs. Sadly, The Owl House was shortened because someone felt like it didn't really fit Disney brand. They regret it now though, seeing how popular it is. But the harm is done and it's too late to go back on that decision.

I know Japan does the OVA deal where they animate extra stories taking place in between. That and a prequel, comics, etc. means we have the chance of getting the content we were denied by Disney.
That said, the “economic situation” was the failure of Disney parks. And they did the worst choice imaginable, cutting a story focused Animation with a TON of fans which was PERFECT for streaming services. They did a brain dead decision, and only one person decided that it had to go. When ppl think Disney, they don’t think the parks. They think animation. They’re a multi billion dollar company, and it’s downright pathetic they felt they needed to “cut costs” while making a KILLING through their streaming service.
I live to watch others see this show now. Love the slow denial and sudden “wait no what…no” when they come together for the dance.
Sadly, as cute as Luz and Amity are, Disney gotta Disney. Luz's actual canon partner in Season 2 ends up being, of all things, a deific sweet potato. It... makes more sense in context. And don't get me wrong, they are adorable - but Amity only getting one episode with the Spellraiser is a crime.

The thing I noticed:
Look at the Dance again. It is not the typical "Woman in Suit is doing the male part" stuff we see IF we see something like that.
Ami, the one in the cute dress, started and ended dancing the male part, they swapped in the middle and Luz, with her Suit with tutu was dancing the female part for most of it.
Like, someone NEEDS to count how many times she’s said gay in this episode LMAO 😂

And we will see that public humiliation that Eda told King about.
Disney cut the show because they believed the show wasn't popular until they saw the latest polls and the new york comic con panel now they are massively regretting it. The show was originally going to be 5 seasons I believe.
The best part of the story is that the first episode of season three was put up by them on TH-cam, and the views were astronomically high. Now Disney is kicking themselves over the loss of those profits.
Now, you get to spend the rest of the season watching Gay Panic Amity getting blushy and flustered, and Oblivious Luz having no idea why.
In regards to the letter (Don't worry, not a spoiler): early on in an interview, Sarah-Nicole Robles commented that one of her favorite parts was playing "creepy Luz." It was pretty quickly clarified that she was referring to when Luz talked about meeting a moody upperclass student on her first day at Hexside. That clarification, largely got ignored though, and people kept speculating on who -- or WHAT -- "Creepy Luz" was. So when the letters were shown, people wondered if it was our first clue about "Creepy Luz."
This episode has a deleted grom picture, The image shows an alternate Grom photo of Luz in her otter suit, with Amity looking at her lovingly.

The outfit that Luz is wearing to The Grom is a shout out to The Fonz from Happy Days during an episode in which he was helping out a ballet class and wore a tutu over his normal leather jacket and jeans attire.
I relate so much to the lack of representation you mentioned. I was already a grown-ass adult when I figured out I was a lesbian, and it should have been so obvious, but it never even occurred to me. This show has made me shed a couple of tears thinkng about how much easier (and not filled with denial) some years of my life could have been if there were this kind of things on cartoons when I was a child.
Yeah looking back if things had been more candid in the past I might not have spent so much time wondering if there was something wrong with me for never getting into an intimate relationship with someone.
As it was it didn't sink in that I was basically Ace until I was 36.

And this made the brother twin insecure about himself and the sister twin hate not being able to be herself.

So, I am super late to this party because I had to finish watching the Owl House myself first so that I could absolutely binge this. But that was the best reaction to any media ever in the world that I have seen in my entire life and I LOVED it!

I love this whole episode. Not only the gay, obviously, but also how much it set up, what with Gromulus being set free actually happening and Amity and Luz getting torn apart in the resulting conflict.

I love this episode so much, and it's not even the best episode the show has to offer! The dance scene is so beautiful; it's one of the best-looking animated fight scenes (I'm counting it as a fight scene because they were battling Grom) I've ever seen - and I say that as someone who's watched Arcane!
Funnily, this was the _second_ episode I've seen of an animated kids' show where there's a super-gay prom episode where the protagonist dances with a girl who she'd previously had an antagonistic relationship with. And the first show I saw that in was written by the husband of one of the lead writers on The Owl House!
I have two compliments. First, watching your reaction to the gay honestly made me tear up. I'm so glad you enjoyed this and this is my favorite Owl House reaction. Secondly, I'm glad you're willing to rewatch specific scenes to investigate/you enjoy, you're the only reactor ive seen do that.

fun fact the "terrifying spider" is called a camel spider with is actually not true spider but is more closely related to scorpions and is despite appearances quite harmless.
The creator of the show, Dana Terrace actually came out and told us that Disney did not actually cancel the show because of the LGBTQ.
Even more interesting, after the MASSIVE success of season 3 episode 1, Disney actually came out and admitted that they had made a huge mistake canceling the show.
The reason Disney gave is still concerning for animation as a means of telling more serialized stories.
Still quite telling that we see something like this, hear the show was canceled, and default response is "Disney hates Gays".
The company might want to try and change that public opinion.

Actually Dana later took back that statement. It is important to note that she did say this at the end of season 1, but the next year she came back out and retracted it after Disney sided with the Don't Say Gay bills.

I didn't realize how long this video was till it was mentioned in the video. I was so invested into the reaction that I didn't even notice the time passing.
Actually season 3 got canceled because Disney thought that it wasn’t bringing in enough money it didn’t seem popular, and they posted the FIRST ep of season 3 and it got A BUNCH of likes so it MIGHT happen
So it's important to note here, if Disney cancelled the show for the LGBT content, they would have canned it before they spend a dime on animation. Dana would have been up front from the start, it's not like they snuck it through and Disney doesn't know what's airing on their channel until it airs.

Luz has been replaced by a changing. An offset of the fairies from the first episode. Their civilization is run on human remains like skin and teeth and they have run low without access to the portal so they crossed over where resources are plentiful.
I can’t believe it was revealed that Belos is actually luz’s dead dad and luz was dead the whole time and the boiling isles was luz’s elaborate afterlife

The biggest and flashiest example of the floriography in the Owl House! In Season 1, at any rate.
The Grom tree is not a tree at all, but a Wisteria, which is technically a vine that mimics the shape of a tree! And in Floriography, the Wisteria represents patient and enduring love.
