This game is legendary. Will Clark's 2nd best performance of all time. Only second to his Major League debut home run off Nolan Ryan. I am so fortunate that I got to see him play. I missed Babe Ruth and only saw him in old highlight films. Not the case with Will Clark. I became a Giants fan as a kid growing up in the mid '80's. Clark was and still is my hero and favorite baseball player. I emulate his mannerisms when I take at bats and project the confident and cocky swagger he had. He should be in the hall of fame simply for what he did for the Giants and the game. Hopefully I will get a chance to meet him in person thank him for inspiring me and giving Giants fans lots or cherished memories. He was indeed a thrill to behold.

1:22:35 The moment the MLB Pitching world changed forever.
Many pitchers have been talking into their gloves during mound meetings ever since.
Greg Maddux is known as the "Father of Glove Talking".

Will Clark read Greg Maddox lips right before the grandslam. After that everyone started to cover their face. Because of Will Clark everyone covers their face with their glove. It's called the Clark Cover Up.

years later there was an angels game with rex hudler working as commentator tim salmon at the plate with the runners on
the manager comes to the mound before salmon hits just like here
then rex hudler says something like when the manager comes to the mound like this most of the time u r getting a fast ball
right after he said this the pitch was a fast ball down the middle just like here
salmon hits it out just like here
so u can guess the pitch just from the manager going out to the mound they will probably tell him to not fall behind the hitter and go after him

You are the man for uploading this great classic!!. Will Clark is one of my favorite baseball players. The guy could do it all: RBIs, home runs, great first baseman. He had a perfect batting swing, which gave inspiration to Adam LaRoche's batting swing. Will was a total team player and he was a great presence on and off the field.

Living in San Francisco and being a Giant fan for so long it was a shame that after all the years of failures and glimors of hope it and guys like Will that busted their tail every day the success was minimized by the earthquake . After this act by Mother Nature the importance of the teams success was hopelessly minimized. Will Clark and guys like Robby Thompson, Matt Williams, Kevin Mitchell and others brought alot of pride and joy being a Giant fan during that era of the team. Thanks guys.

Before the NBA on NBC, Marv Albert was the pregame host of the MLB on NBC Game of the Week aka “Major League Baseball...an Inside look” so yeah, many of you are surprised to see him talking about baseball, but remember that after the 1989 season, CBS became the right holders of the MLB, in 1990 NBC got the NBA rights (from CBS) and Marv Albert will get the role of main broadcaster, and his journey to become “The Voice of the NBA in the 90s” began...
PD: In historic topics, replacing MLB with the NBA was the beginning of the Golden Era for NBC Sports...sadly the decline began when they lost the NFL in 1998, followed by the loss of MLB (Again) in 2000 and in 2002 the NBA heading to ESPN. I’m hope one day NBC Sports shines like they used to in the 90s.

and then with the lost of NHL rights in 2021, but at least they the Vin Scully of Soccer Peter Druly to help out with their English Permier League soccer coverage which is fantastic by the way, so all hope is not lost, after all, it was better for the NBC to have two super bowls instead of one in the mid 1990s.

one of my favorite aspects of Grace as a hitter was how hard he was to strike out, and how he was an absolute beast when it came to working counts full from 0-2. I loved watching him go down 0-2, then foul off pitch after pitch, lay off close balls, and eventually walk or get a hit.

We all know about Will Clark's MVP series, but we all forget how baseball has changed since this series. Today, you see why pitchers and catchers cover their mouths when they have a conference on the mound. This series has a lot to do with that change, because that night when the Thrill went 4-for-4 he was also a good evesdropper. He knew what was coming, because the Thrill was a good lipreader.

If there was a Cubs team that should've went to the WS, it should've been the 89 team. The Cubs and Giants were evenly matched that year however the Giants came up with the key hits to win the series.

True story-- at 1:21:33 Will Clark read Maddux's lips at the mound and read "fastball" from Maddux's lips. The very first pitch was a grand slam. To this day, during meetings at the mound, you will see pitchers cover their mouth's with their glove. This ritual with pitchers covering their mouth's at the mound with a glove all started with this Will Clark reading Maddux's lips and hitting a grand slam.

Thomas Austin. Kennedy was smart, he kept his catcher's glove covering his signs to the pitcher so that no one could see them.
The Cubs giving away their conversations on the mound set the tone for everyone else to cover their mouths when discussing what pitches to throw to certain batters. Will Clark exploited that, the Cubs paid dearly, and as they say "The rest is history".....

I find it utterly insane that Vin Scully suddenly came down w/ laryngitis shortly after calling Game 1 and thus, couldn't call Game 2 the next day. Hence, NBC getting Bob Costas during an off-day of the ALCS to fill-in.

***** This game showed 23-year old Maddox what his pitching coach had been telling him for 2 years: he needed to learn to throw strikes on both sides of the plate, not just the outside. Only times Maddox worked inside back then was to move hitters off the plate; that he did so with unusual enthusiasm helped him win 19 in 1989, 18 previous year
'90 and much of '91, Maddox had mixed results; working both sides initially led to fat pitches & also led to the idiots at the Tribune, which owned the Cubs, deciding Maddox wasn't worth the $$$
By '92, he could work both sides effectively, won his 1st Cy Young Award, then bolted for Atlanta.

1:24:10 Will Clark must have had something personal against the Maddux family.
1:21:38 Clark probably lip reading the Cubs right here.
21:23 The Cubs forgot the scouting report on Clark in the 4th inning.
Clark,Mitchell and the Giants overall were first pitch hitters. That's how Dave Stewart threw the 5-0 shutout against them in game 1 of the WS.Clark went for the first pitch and popped out to Canseco in game 4 of the WS,slowing down that huge 7th inning Giants rally..Mitchell swung early too.

    1. The Cubs really misfired by not locking up Maddux before he became a free agent. Might've won a World Series by now if they'd kept him. 2. The second inning triple was probably Luis Salazar's career highlight. The lowlight: losing his eye on a line drive to the face. 3. Scully and Seaver are a solid team.

Pitchers now cover their face with their glove after Will Clark hit a grandslam in this game. To prevent lip reading. It's called the Clark Cover up.
