Huge Cards fan, but I will always give that Astros team their due. That lineup was nasty. Berkman, Bagwell, Kent, Biggio, and Beltran. They were so good. This was a classic series that was unfortunately overshadowed by the Yankees Vs Red Sox classic series.
Which is a surprise that this NLCS got so overshadowed by the ALCS, since both the Cards and Astros had many star players. I mean, in 2003, none of the two LCS got overshadowed by the other one.
Man, I wish they had Game 5 too. No doubt my favorite game as an Astros fan. The Cardinals lineup was so scary I remember leaving the room when they came up to bat.
From a Red Sox fan: It's too bad this NLCS went totally under the radar nationally. This was a phenomenal Championship Series that should have gotten some attention.
Who would think it 7 years & 7 days later in a new Busch Stadium an even more epic & dramatic walk-off home run would be hit to force the biggest Game 7 there can possibly be?!
Who would have thought that 8 years later, the guy behind the plate would be the new manager and lead the team to the NLCS and the WS in his first 2 years.
Both LCS series were absolute classics that year. This series saw the home team win every game, and it was a battle right to the end…with the Cards eventually clinching their first pennant in 17 years. Of course in the ALCS the Red Sox exorcised their playoff demons, erasing a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 deficit to beat their nemesis the Yankees.
This series was the best I'd ever seen until the 2011 World Series. It still makes me sad that this team couldn't finish the deal against Boston...but they have won 2 titles and appeared in 3 more WS since then, and they have another amazing team on paper this year, so I guess it's ok...
For my money, Mike Matheny was the toughest man in baseball. On May 26, 1998 while he was playing for Milwaukee, he took a fastball to the mouth and didn't even go down. He just stood there spitting out blood and teeth. He caught all ten innings of the game the next night. They don't call him Iron Mike for nothing. Having him as a manager has been great for the Cards, too.
This was always one of the most exciting games I've ever seen. Only Game 6 of the 2011 WS was more exciting. This was the Cards swan song in 2004 because they got swept by the Red Sox in the WS. This was the team that won 105 games in the regular season and we couldn't do anything against the Sox. That always made me mad. But when Edmonds hit that homer, I can still remember jumping up and down in front of my TV. I was so excited, I called my sister at work to tell her. What a clutch homer that was by Edmonds!
those teams were soon good. Think about it. Astros: biggie (HOF) Bagwell (potential HOF), Beltran (HOF), and Wagner (potential HOF). Cardinals: Pujols (HOF).. not sure about anybody else on that team but wow! Great battles is right.
joe jones I miss those days, haha. So do you. I wonder how the Cards and Astros said, we're enemies! We won't see better, and as a Houston guy, I truly liked watching them fight it out, and rooted for the winner. Carpenter, a young Wainwright, Oswalt, lots of guys! We won't get that again, will we?
I was there. Just an awkward 7th grader with his mom. We sat in the first row of the upper deck in LF and I started to get sick from looking down a bunch and so by the end of the game I was feeling super nauseous and wanted to leave, but there was no way I was walking out early on a game like this. So glad I stayed and got to see the end of this.
Was there ever more dramatic and entertaining postseasons than the 2003/2004 championship series from both leagues? Red Sox and Yanks going 7 (Twice) and then Marlins/Cubs and Astros/Cardinals both going 7. A really great time for baseball.
BobJohnson1981 this was imo the last greatest moments in baseball before it got lame but now it got cool again last season and this have been fun to watch the playoffs
@@charliebobandas6794definitely the best in my lifetime. they absolutely crushed everyone from late May until the end of the year after going about .500 over the first 50 games. They really didn't stop until June of 2006. It's a shame. Should have won 04 and 05, those were better teams than 06.
Jim Edmonds looks like he's Kurt Warner's long lost brother lol. He was one of the most exciting players I've ever watched, swinging the bat and using the glove
I was at this game in the second row behind first base. Everybody in our section jumped on top of their seats after Edmonds' home run. A truly memorable moment.
Anybody notice the Fox guy at the end grabbing at Edmonds for an interview, WHILE he was still celebrating with his teammates? I thought the custom was for the interviewer to wait until after the guy celebrates with his teammates. Then, you call the player. You don't drag him away from his celebration just for an interview.
Probably a Cubs fan. When your team can't find its way to a World Series you have to run down your competition in an effort to feel better about your choice of a loser.
2:57:59 Ticker appears at bottom of the screen informing Yankees and Red Sox Fans in New England and New York that they will be going to Game 7 of the ALCS

and they say on mlb network he aint a hall of famer what hands down hall of famer lets not get into those crazy plays i will be here for years the hitting showed it here
Such wonderful memories. And now, the Cardinals are at a crossroads....they're playing horribly....something has to give....and it may be Matheny's job.
^No, 105-win Cardinals vs. 100-win Yankees would have been an epic and even-handed Series. But the Yankees blew the 3-0 lead and the Red Sox had too much momentum.
@@juanloko2 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Nope we would have definitely won. The only reason the Red Sox won was because of that fake destiny voodoo being down 3-0 in the ALCS coming back curse bull crap.
@2:31:53 I thought this ball was gone. I was sitting along the first baseline when he hit it and I was shocked. It died at the warning track. If that all been hit in July, it’s out.
Can't help but think about the fact the Cards went on to get swept by the Red Sox. Then in the 2005 NLCS rematch the Astros won only to get swept by the White Sox. The simulation is real.
Yankees had no business making the postseason in 2004. Boston should have won the AL East in 2004, while the AL Wild Card should have gone to a team from the AL West in 2004. Its just unreal how the MV3 just got shut down in the 2004 WS
Such a criminally underrated series.
Man, I miss having the Astros in the NL Central. I always enjoyed it when the Cardinals played them.
Same here but the rivalry against the Yankees if it is one is insane! I
I'd trade the Brewers for the Astros back in a heartbeat. I hate them but damn it they're a national league team
Edmonds was throwback. Not flashy or mouthy, just showed up every day and played every moment as hard as he could.
and he could also fly. he actually flew in the out field haha
Dan Robbins you must not be a cardinal fan 😂
Edmonds was my favorite Cardinal growing up.
@@adawg2015 He was a human high light reel. And he was super clutch!
the entire 2004 Cardinals team fits this description.
Jim Edmonds had one of the most beautiful swings
He had the same swing as Chris Davis
Taking offense and defense into account, the MV3 (Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen) were the best trio in baseball history, hands down.
