toptenguy1 And we sports fans wonder why the Marlins aren't the Yankees of the National League. The 2003 Marlins were LOADED! A young Juan Pierre, rookie sensation Miguel Cabrera, Pudge Rodriguez in his prime, veteran Jeff Conine, a young Josh Beckett, dominant Dontrelle Willis, Ugeath Urbina to close games and 72 year old manager Jack McKeon. These guys were special and no matter how many runs behind, this team never gave up. To top it off, this team beat the two most storied franchises in back to back series. They came back 3 games to 1 vs the Cubs (which most remember for the "Bartman" game 6 8th inning the Marlins scored 8 runs in) and dominated the Yankees in 6 games to win the whole thing.
Also brad Penny, Carl pavano and mark redmond in rotation, Braden looper as setup man, mike Lowell at third, speed demon luis Castillo at 2nd, powerful Derek Lee at first . Super underrated team. They even had AJ Burnett! But he was hurt
I always forget how loaded this Marlins team was - look at that lineup. Pierre, Castillo, Pudge, Miggy, Lee, with Encarnacion/Conine batting 7th, AG batting 8th was a good hitter, and Beckett, Pavano, Dontrelle Willis leading the rotation - one heck of a good team.
kenny cohen I remember seeing that live thinking we would win. but after the 5-3 lead you could just tell the Cubs had blew their wad. And Beckett was a beast
This was the last Game 7 we played before this years WS. Watching this game brought back memories and also makes me appreciate the WS win we just got. Go Cubs Go!!!!
In the 5th inning, Kerry Wood obviously lost his control and what did the cameras show Dusty Baker doing?? Just sitting on the bench, toothpick in mouth, chilling and watching the game! Kerry was one of his best pitchers so why worry, right? He was so nonchalant during a crucial game AND he didnt have anyone warming up!, the Marlins on the other hand had already goone through 2 pitchers and had Josh Beckett warming in the bullpen just in case. That's why the Cubs lost, horrible managing
Yes, Dusty Baker is a Good/horrible manager, he took the Giants to the WS in 2002, Cubs to the NLCS, and cincinnati to multiple division contending series, his one problem is that he's too much of an old school manager and doesnt play stats and ignores details He thinks, "if my pitcher is doing well, he'll just stay in and finish the game" or "if he gets into trouble, he'll shake it off cause hes a veteran and i dont trust anybody else"
its kinda dumb to blame bartman. Its not the fan's fault its the team's fault especially in game 6. Dusty should not have let wood or Prior pitch for so long. Also, gonzalez's error contributed to the loss.
Been an A's for 21 years, waiting for my Green and Gold to get back to the World Series since '89. All teams have their time and moments, the Chicago Cubs deserve to go, this is their year, 108 years of pain and agony must come to an end for the Cubs. Go Cubbies!!!!

I completely agree, both championship series went to seven games and it was awesome to see when I was 12 years old. I was both a Yankees (became a fan since 9/11) and Marlins fan around that time and still am and I was happy to see both in the World Series.

I have to say this... that pitch that Kerry Wood threw to Miggy wasn't a bad pitch at all it was down & off the plate inside & Miggy who was a 20 year old rookie went down & nailed that pitch... impressive to say the least... he turned into a BEAST of a player... one of the greatest ever... It'll be a footnote now that the Cubs have finally won it all. But I have NEVER heard a stadium so quiet as that third out. It might as well have been a rec league game. And then they showed that elderly couple, both of them likely in their 80's, in Cubs gear...neither of them having been old enough to see the then last World Series title for the Cubs in 1908. They almost certainly died before last November's Game 7 to end all Game 7's and it still kinda makes me sad. Bart Giamatti said baseball is a game designed to break your heart. Even as a guy with no dog in the fight, I never felt any more strongly about that then after this game.
Why was Kerry Wood leaving the ball in the middle of the plate so much. No wonder Marlins hitters teed off on him. Don't worry though Cubs fans I'm a Mariners fan I understand disappointment
Bartman should not be balmed for the Cubs losing the game It is not his fault in any way at all. It is simply the teams fault. Gonzalez shouldnt have dropped the double play ball and Prior should not have been in the game for that long. Even so, there was still a Game 7 where the cubs could have won. The Marlins having the momentum thing is a joke and isnt an excuse for the Cubs to not win the game .
Andrew Lindquist Back when the Cubs were Lovable Losers, there was always someone on the team being blamed for the team's troubles or someone in the stands. It was the MANAGEMENT STUPID - no its ands or buts. If you want someone to blame, blame the no-good Wrigley family especially P.K. who guided the Cubs to the worst stretch of baseball ever. I'd refer to him as baseball's version of Bill Wirtz when he guided the Blackhawks to possibly the worst hockey in the NHL. Both these guys are the worst kind of people ever to lead sports franchises.
Baker should have took Mark Prior out of the game with 1 out in the 8th inning of Game 6 with 3-0 lead after he gave up a double and had Baker had did that Steve Bartman wouldn't be in the conversation and never exist and Dusty Baker should make the right move in the 8th inning and Alex Gonzalez would make that double play to end the 8th.
The series wasn't over after game five. The Cubs still had a 3-2 lead in the series. There was nothing they could do about that fifth game. They had a 3-0 lead in the eighth inning in game six and a 5-3 lead in game seven. They also had a 4-0 lead in game one and lost that one. So it wasn't just one game and it wasn't just game five.
The Cubs 150% deserved to lose the game after the fans vilified him like that. What team lets a fan reaching for a foul ball rattle them do much that they give up eight runs?
As a lifelong Cubs fan, even after finally seeing them win the World Series, this game 7 still hurts. I honestly cried as a 14-year old when Paul Bako hit the fly ball into Conine's glove to end the game, and season.
Wood stunk it up this game. Walking Brian Banks to lead off the 5th.. BB couldn’t hit his way out of a paper sack in the post season. Such great memories. Also, we swept them out of the playoffs last season. Ownership on those cubs
Not for nothing but what Josh Beckett did in this series was very similar to MadBum's 2014 World Series - a shutout in Game Five, four innings of relief two days later in Game 7. Not quite as legendary an effort but one that probably merits more respect than it's received. This Cubs team was not ready for prime time. Only 88 regular season wins, not an overwhelmingly talented roster. This wasn't going to be the team to end the drought.
I was at that game. It was like walking into a funeral from the get go. Even on the way in walking down Sheffield. Game 6 the night before completely deflated the fan base.
A lot of people seem to forget the cubs lost game 5 as well 4 - 0 on a beautiful 2 hit shutout by Josh Beckett, The Marlins were in control from game 5 and on. In fact they were the better the team, the cubs couldve won game 6, but the cubs would have gotten lucky, cause the stats supported the marlins as the better club
Omar Morales Luna Exactly! A lot of people(Cubs fans for the most part) didn't look at the whole picture. They got too cocky and it bite them in the ass.
In a way you're right, but the game of baseball has changed a lot, some analysts have stated that we are entering a "pitching revolution". Many young pitchers are throwing better stuff these days, (notice the # of perfect games & no hitters in recent years) But better stuff means less pitches to maintain that stuff Prior stated in SI magazine that at 90 pitches, he felt he had to work harder to get his location and movement to work. Speed was the same, but its the location that suffers
2003 was heartbreaking for both the Cubbies and the Red Sox, both being 5 outs from the World Series and then choking it. Fortunately, however, the Sox recovered in '04 by coming back from being down 0-3 against the Yankees and sweeping the Cardinals to lift the Curse of the Bambino, and then going on to win two more World Series titles in 2007 and again this year. I hope the Cubs will win it all in 2014.
Isnt it funny how the Cubs, Red Sox, and White Sox all had the three longest droughts.....and the Red and White Sox both won in back to back years? If the Cubs had won in 2003, it wouldve been an amazing coincidence that they all Broke their droughts in consecutive years! (and i dont think the cubs will be contenders until 2015 MAYBE even 2016 with the way their rebuild is going)
I'm a die-hard Cubs fan, even more than the Blackhawks (who just beat the Kings in OT!!!), but we'll only become competitive around 2016. 2015 will be the year that some of our prospects will come up and it will take time to develop and adjust but I'm confident in Theo and we will definitely have a championship thanks to him.
famguy218 honestly I actually wonder if rebuilding will actually do anything. And I actually kind of think the cubs are a lil "cursed". Will not cursed per se, I think it's their reputation that they are expected to lose kind of sub consciously affects them. For example do you remember 2008? The Cubs had one of the best Clubs they have ever had in their franchise history they had everything they needed to win the World Series. However they played horribly in the division series, almost as if they forgot how to play the game! And they were playing a dodgers team with only 84 wins! Anybody could have beat the dodgers. this leads me to believe that it doesn't matter what kind of team the Cubs put together they can go 160-0 in the season, and then lose three straight in the division series. Personally what I think will happen when the Cubs are playoff ready, is that their young prospects won't be ready for the playoff atmosphere much like Texas in 2010 when they lost the World Series to a weaker Giants team.
the best part of all of this is when the Tigers made the World Series and lost people kept getting angry that Cabrera was not going to get it first ring..... Uhhh got one the first year he was in the league
I was wondering what emotions were going through Cubs fans during this time. Perhaps i can ask you a few Qs? After game 6 did you have a feeling of "we may lose game 7"? Were you looking for someone to blame ?(players, management, Bartman)? And even during game 7, did you somehow get a feeling you still wouldnt win?
That was tough, i have game 6 on my computer and they replayed the damn play so many times, its still hard too tell if the ball was in play or in the stands, it looked like it literally would've hit the railing....which by the rule book means out of play and NO interference.
I agree, not just as a Cardinals fan but as a fan in general. It was the umpires fault for not calling fan interference and the batter "out". Also, for anyone who wants to get a good view of the bs the Cubs fans pulled check out a film called Catching Hell.
Funny, as I read this I think about this one dream I had. It's 2020 and the Cubs finally win the World Series. They invite him back to Wrigley Field and he walks out with a T-shirt that reads "F*** the Cubs" and he middle fingers the entire crowd. Then after a few seconds, the scene blows up. Swear to God I've had this dream before.
The Fox broadcast team did some backtracking and damage control early in this game, reading Bartman's public statement, making it clear that other fans were trying to catch that ball too, and urging people to remain level-headed. They had embarrassed themselves the night before, criticizing Bartman and joking that he would have a tough time getting out of Wrigley Field alive and asking why someone hadn't throw on him onto the field.
Man if this Marlins team would have stayed together they would have been a dynasty. With that pitching staff and infield, the only weakness was the closer./
your comment was solid and respectable up until the last sentence. it contradicted everything you said first. He ran out of stamina, he was also a rookie throwing over 137 pitches per game AND its not like he could have taken himself out. how did he choke if his back was against the wall?
Basically the Cubs destroyed Wood's arm during his rookie season. If the Cubs had shown some restraint and not forced him to throw his arm out and get Tommy John surgery, he would have been an amazing pitcher.
Patrick Lee, yes, it hurts less now than it did before glorious 2016, but it's still a memory that conjures up a feelings of heartbreak for Cubs fans (like me) who watched it live. When we were up 3-1, I was feeling so great. We were on a 3-game winning streak. I was like, "Yes, we're finally going to win the pennant!" Made Games 6 and 7 devastating and, therefore, difficult to talk about. Thom Brennaman sums it up very well here: 2:14:18
I will continue to say this, when my Cubs get back in the postseason and reach the NLCS, folks will come back to baseball. MLB needs us to bring baseball back to folks televisions .. hate all you want. It is what it is. But mark my words. MLB needs us! :)
hushg2000 You think people don't watch baseball because the Cubs haven't done well? Geez. I remember a lot of people watching when the St. Louis Cardinals came back to win the 2011 World Series.... :)
hushg2000 Thats cause the cubs haven't won in 107 years. For a team with that much money and located in one of the nicer chicago neighborhoods to have a century long drought is pathetic. The Cubs front office treated the fans like complete garbage
For those of you that don't understand what I meant by comment, listen carefully. Sure, some people watch baseball, and a few cities across the country follow their home teams to the extreme. But the 2003 TV ratings, like the 84 & 89 season, were at a all time high. 2003 broke ratings all across the board for pee wee sake. Your typical American in 2015 doesn't really follow baseball or care to watch the W.S,.. the ratings are there to prove my point. Shit, look them up, they suck! So what I am saying is that if my Cubs get back to the NLCS, any sport fan will tune in at home or at a bar to witness the Chicago Cubs win a World Series. How difficult is that to understand? I'm not sure how you guys are getting all ass hurt about it... It is what it is.
The way I followed this team changed and it's been for the worst. I've been a fan since 1996 and before 2003 I was the guy who was used to only having about 2-3 months of meaningful baseball before they fell out. Like Wayne Drehs said in Catching Hell "2003 was a lesson" Now I long for us to get back SO much that I am pissed at what the new front office is doing today. Am consideing leaving this team in a year or so if things don't get better

The Dusty Baker special: let's just stick with Kerry Wood until his arm falls off. Have fun Houston.
Cubs are going to the world series!
btw Jack McKeon is still alive! craazy
36:33: Cubs Home Run
I miss the FLORIDA Marlins
Prior didn't have the stamina to finish. Couldn't get the big out. That 0 2 hanger to Rodriguez will haunt him forever. He is a choke artist.
One day, the cubs will win it all!
Sebastian Barcelone One millenium lol
On a long enough time line anything is possible...
Mitt Mittens lol. The Cubs are contending unlike your Marlins. The bulls went to the playoffs unlike the heat. The blackhawks are in the stanley cup.
Mitt Mittens How is being a miami fan, i mean, each and every single one of your teams besides the Rays are garbage... jus saying
well well well
2:21:29 The quietest moment in Wrigley Field history.

I was at that game. It was like walking into a funeral from the get go. Even on the way in walking down Sheffield. Game 6 the night before completely deflated the fan base.
No its called that the Cubs actually were starting to become good, so you all started worrying about the Cubs. It had nothing to do with Bartman
I thought even after the game six loss and especially after Alou's home run that the Cubs would win this series.
Happy Anniversary!!!!!!!!!
No shit Barry! I know it was the 6th game, but that game isn't on youtube.
In a way you're right, but the game of baseball has changed a lot, some analysts have stated that we are entering a "pitching revolution". Many young pitchers are throwing better stuff these days, (notice the # of perfect games & no hitters in recent years) But better stuff means less pitches to maintain that stuff
Prior stated in SI magazine that at 90 pitches, he felt he had to work harder to get his location and movement to work. Speed was the same, but its the location that suffers
Really funny how they blame some fans over Steve Bartman incident (rightly so!) but Fox repeatedly showed replay of situation which contributed A LOT.
Somehow Bartman was to blame for this, too.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but don't count on it. I think you guys will do it soon, but probably not in 2014.
Kevin Kennedy was saying the same thing 5 outs to go during the FOX postgame show after the Red Sox and Yankees game 7
This means nothing now! 2016 World Series Champs!!!!! GO CUBS GO!!!!
It wasn't ignored. ESPN had a special devoted to solely that topic
Thank you Bartman
Funny, as I read this I think about this one dream I had. It's 2020 and the Cubs finally win the World Series. They invite him back to Wrigley Field and he walks out with a T-shirt that reads "F*** the Cubs" and he middle fingers the entire crowd. Then after a few seconds, the scene blows up.
Swear to God I've had this dream before.
Baker and Gonzalez to blame.
221:26 - The quietist moment in Wrigley Field history.
What a heartbreaker
What a great comeback team.
your comment was solid and respectable up until the last sentence. it contradicted everything you said first.
My dad said it best: Even if the Cubs had won, they still lost after Bartman. It's...just nuts.
When people ask me about this game I always have the same response. I don't want to talk about it.
I think that's all cub fans response
Forget about this one, cuz we're finally going to the world series!!
Noel López We redeemed ourselves. Totally different feeling.
Who cares they finally won.
Thom Brennaman sums it up very well here: 2:14:18
Cubs were only down 6-5 after 5 innings, Woods was gassed, why did he come back out for the 6th inning?
I will continue to say this, when my Cubs get back in the postseason and reach the NLCS, folks will come back to baseball.
MLB needs us to bring baseball back to folks televisions .. hate all you want. It is what it is. But mark my words.
MLB needs us! :)
hushg2000 Yes, because nobody watches games now because the Cubs currently suck.
That's kind of a redundant statement...
hushg2000 You think people don't watch baseball because the Cubs haven't done well?
At least you have those 2 Stanley Cups to fall back on.
Wow Kerry wood hit a homer to tie the game! I didn’t even know that happened
굿 플레이 마이아미 마르린스 ^^
Upload Game 5 of the 1908 World Series please!
The way technology is maybe possible one day.
Bottom line was the Marlins had a better team. We didn’t get lucky. Crazy how much talent. Once Brad Penny and Beckett came in they had no chance
That Kerry wood homer had the loudest pop
Billy Corgan singing the 7th inning stretch😂
